Preview: Mariners at Tigers

GAME: Seattle Mariners (36-34) at Detroit Tigers (35-35)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 21 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Comerica Park, Detroit, Michigan
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Detroit Tigers paid $132.75 million to bring in Justin Upton in the offseason, and he showed why with a vintage performance on Monday. Upton, who homered twice including a walk-off blast in the series opener, will try to lead the Tigers to another win when they host the Seattle Mariners in the second of a four-game series on Tuesday.

Upton was batting .213 after going 0-for-4 at Los Angeles on June 1 but has steadily picked up his game throughout the month and hit safely in each of the last 10 games. Some of those hits are leaving the yard of late, and four of his eight home runs on the season have come in the last four games. The Mariners squandered a pair of leads before falling 8-7 on Upton’s homer in the 12th inning on Monday and are losers of three straight and seven of nine. Seattle’s run of uninspired play of late is coinciding with a seven-game winning streak for the Texas Rangers, pushing the Mariners 9 1/2 games back in the American League West.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ROOT (Seattle), FSN Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners LH James Paxton (1-2, 2.86 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Justin Verlander (7-5, 3.87)

Paxton recorded his third straight quality start and picked up a win while holding the Tampa Bay Rays to three runs on seven hits in six innings. The 27-year-old owns 29 strikeouts and six walks in 22 total innings since being recalled. Paxton won his only career decision at Detroit, surrendering one run and five hits with two strikeouts in six innings on August 15, 2014.

Verlander had a string of seven straight starts allowing six or fewer hits come to an end on Thursday at Kansas City, when he was reached for four runs on eight hits in seven innings. The Virginia native got enough support from the offense to pull out a win in that start and is 5-1 in his last six outings. Verlander is 10-8 with a 3.39 ERA in 18 career starts against the Mariners but has not faced them since May 30, 2014.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mariners RHP Taijuan Walker left the team on Monday to head back to Seattle for an MRI on his ailing right foot.

2. Detroit 2B Ian Kinsler is 1-for-15 over the last four games.

3. Seattle RHP Felix Hernandez (calf) is expected to throw off flat ground on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Preview: Cardinals at Cubs

GAME: St. Louis Cardinals (36-33) at Chicago Cubs (47-21)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 21 - 8:05 PM EST
WHERE: Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

If the St. Louis Cardinals are going to catch the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central race, they’ll probably have to do it by dominating the head-to-head matchup. The Cardinals will try for a second straight win over the Cubs – and their seventh consecutive road victory – when the rivals square off Tuesday in the middle contest of their three-game series.

St. Louis snapped a season-high five-game losing streak with a 3-2 win Monday, halting the Cubs’ streaks of three straight overall wins and five in a row against division rivals. It was a rare home defeat for the Cubs, who are 25-9 at Wrigley Field and still lead the second-place Cardinals by 11 1/2 games. The friendly confines also have been kind to Cardinals right-hander Adam Wainwright, who is 9-1 with a 3.33 ERA in his career at Wrigley Field going into Tuesday’s start. Right-hander Jason Hammel takes the mound for the Cubs looking for his third win against the Cardinals this season, as he allowed two runs over 13 1/3 innings in the first two meetings – both in St. Louis.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), ABC 7 (Chicago)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Adam Wainwright (5-4, 4.78 ERA) vs. Cubs RH Jason Hammel (7-2, 2.26)

Wainwright struggled to start the season but has posted a 2.50 ERA over his last six starts. The 34-year-old put together his strongest outing of the year Wednesday against Houston, striking out six and allowing four hits over seven scoreless innings in a no-decision. Wainwright is 12-7 with a 3.97 ERA in 38 games (29 starts) versus the Cubs, and he allowed three runs over six innings in a no-decision against them on May 23 in St. Louis.

Hammel continued his outstanding first half with a strong outing at Washington on Wednesday, limiting the Nationals to one run and five hits over seven innings in a no-decision. The 33-year-old has been especially tough at home, going 3-0 with a 2.03 ERA in five starts at Wrigley Field. Hammel is 4-3 with a 4.60 ERA in nine starts against St. Louis.

WALK-OFFS

1. St. Louis 2B Matt Carpenter, who went 0-for-3 on Monday to snap his 12-game hitting streak, is 2-for-17 with eight strikeouts versus Hammel.

2. The Cubs placed CF Dexter Fowler (hamstring) on the disabled list Monday and recalled RHP Carl Edwards Jr.

3. Cardinals 1B/OF Brandon Moss hit his team-leading 16th home run Monday – his fifth blast in his last 10 games.

GAME: Cincinnati Reds (27-43) at Texas Rangers (46-25)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 21 - 8:05 PM EST
WHERE: Globe Life Park in Arlington, Arlington, Texas
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Colby Lewis took a no-hitter into the ninth inning in his last outing and looks to remain unbeaten when the Texas Rangers host the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday in the opener of their three-game series. Lewis settled for his 10th career complete game in the victory over Oakland and has given up just two runs and five hits in 17 innings over his last two starts.

Lewis took a perfect game into the eighth inning and ended up allowing two hits in the 5-1 victory over the Athletics on Thursday and said he isn't carrying any disappointment over the close call. "I feel like that's all individual-type stuff - individual-type nonsense," Lewis told reporters. "I don't really worry about that. At the end of the day, we won. I feel like I did what I needed to do that day, and that's about it." Texas rattled off its seventh consecutive victory by posting a 4-3 home win over Baltimore on Monday and its American League-best 46-25 record also is a franchise best through 71 games. Cincinnati owns the third-worst record (27-43) in the majors and is a dismal 10-24 on the road.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati), FSN Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Anthony DeSclafani (0-0, 2.08 ERA) vs. Rangers RH Colby Lewis (6-0, 2.81)

DeSclafani is making his third start of the season since returning from an oblique injury suffered in spring training. He lasted just 2 2/3 innings in his last outing, when he gave up four runs (one earned) and six hits in a no-decision against Atlanta. DeSclafani struggled against Texas' Ian Desmond (3-for-6) when he played for Washington.

Lewis has allowed two or fewer runs in nine of his 14 starts and is 23-9 since the beginning of the 2015 season. The 36-year-old is limiting hitters to a .222 batting average - well below the .265 career mark of a major-league career that began in 2002. Lewis hasn't been all that terrific at home this season, posting a 4.50 ERA while going 2-0 in seven starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Reds are visiting the Rangers for just the third time after posting a 2-4 overall record in series played in 2002 and 2013.

2. Texas SS Elvis Andrus is 5-for-8 over his last two contests and has recorded five multi-hit performances in his last eight games.

3. Cincinnati LF Adam Duvall is tied for the major-league lead with 20 homers, and 18 of them have come in his last 44 contests.

Preview: Angels at Astros

GAME: Los Angeles Angels (31-39) at Houston Astros (35-36)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 21 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Minute Maid Park, Houston, Texas
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Houston Astros are looking to record their sixth victory in seven games and reach .500 for the first time since April 6 when they host the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday in the middle contest of a three-game set. Houston won its season opener against the New York Yankees before dropping its next three games and has been making the uphill climb all season.

The Astros bottomed out at 11 games below .500 on May 22 and are 18-8 since the slow start after registering a 10-7 victory over the Angels on Monday. Jose Altuve hit his 11th homer of the season and is batting a scorching .394 this month as he ranks second in the American League with a .343 batting average. While the Astros are on the verge of joining the wild-card race, Los Angeles has been unable to find its groove and is just 7-11 in June. Albert Pujols remains in a prolonged power drought with just one homer in his last 21 games with the Angels..

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, FSN West (Los Angeles), ROOT (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels LH Hector Santiago (4-4, 5.30 ERA) vs. Astros RH Collin McHugh (5-5, 4.89)

Santiago ended a five-start winless stretch by giving up one run and two hits in six innings to defeat Minnesota in his last turn. He had a horrific 12.18 ERA during his drought and pitched four or fewer innings in four of the five outings. Santiago is 1-2 with a 4.05 ERA in nine career appearances (seven starts) against Houston and has had success retiring George Springer (1-for-10).

McHugh has won just one of his last seven starts but pitched well in a no-decision against St. Louis in his last turn. He gave up one run and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings versus the Cardinals for his best effort since yielding one run in seven frames against Seattle on May 8. McHugh is 4-2 with a 2.86 ERA in seven career starts against the Angels and has fared well versus Mike Trout (2-for-11, one homer).

WALK-OFFS

1. Astros SS Carlos Correa belted his first homer since May 29 and recorded three RBIs in the opener.

2. Trout is batting .238 with two homers in June.

3. Houston LF Colby Rasmus, who notched three hits on Monday, has hit just two homers in his last 44 games.

Preview: Phillies at Twins

GAME: Philadelphia Phillies (30-41) at Minnesota Twins (21-48)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 21 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Target Field, Minneapolis, Minnesota
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Philadelphia Phillies are in a deep decline and look to end a seven-game losing streak when they visit the even more woeful Minnesota Twins in Tuesday's opener of a three-game series. Minnesota owns the worst record (21-48) in the majors while Philadelphia is just 6-24 since being seven games above .500.

The Phillies were outscored 42-9 during a winless six-game homestand -- ending with a 3-1 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday -- for their worst homestand since the disastrous 0-7 span from Sept. 21-27, 1964 that cost the team the National League pennant. "Terrible homestand," Philadelphia manager Pete Mackanin told reporters after the loss to Arizona. "It's hard to stay patient. I'm not giving up. Alternative is to give up or not fight ... on a scale of 1 to 10, I'm a 9 in frustration." The Twins halted a five-game losing streak with Sunday's 7-4 victory over the New York Yankees but may be headed to their second 100-loss campaign in 56 seasons in Minnesota. The Twins lost the first nine games of the season and later suffered through an eight-game skid to culminate an 8-26 start to the highly disappointing campaign.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Aaron Nola (5-6, 3.51 ERA) vs. Twins RH Tyler Duffey (2-6, 5.56)

Nola has lost consecutive starts in which he pitched fewer than four innings in each. He allowed 12 runs (10 earned) and 15 hits in 6 2/3 innings during the stretch after giving up two or fewer earned runs in each of his previous five turns. Nola has pitched well on the road by going 3-1 with a 2.27 ERA and 0.87 WHIP in seven starts.

Duffey has fallen on hard times and is 0-3 with an 8.55 ERA over his last four starts. He has given up at least four earned runs in six consecutive starts as a once-spectacular 1.85 ERA through four outings has soared skyward. Duffey is 1-3 with a 6.67 ERA in five home starts this season after going 3-0 with a 1.50 ERA in four outings last season after being recalled in early August.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rookie Twins RF Max Kepler went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs in Sunday's victory and is 8-for-21 with a blast and four doubles during a six-game hitting streak.

2. Philadelphia SS Freddy Galvis is mired in a 6-for-70 funk, while 1B Tommy Joseph is 1-for-31 over his past eight games.

3. Minnesota OF/DH Miguel Sano (hamstring) could begin a minor-league rehab stint later this week - he was injured on May 31.

Preview: Brewers at Athletics

GAME: Milwaukee Brewers (31-39) at Oakland Athletics (28-41)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 21 - 10:05 PM EST
WHERE: Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Milwaukee Brewers make their first visit to Oakland in 14 years when they limp into the Coliseum to meet the Athletics on Tuesday in the first contest of a two-game interleague series. Milwaukee (31-39) is 1-6 on its nine-game trip through California after dropping the last three contests of a four-game set at Dodger Stadium while Oakland (28-41) is 2-5 on a nine-game homestand and scored five runs in its last four games.

Both teams struggle to get batters out as the Athletics own the second-worst ERA in the American League at 4.69 while the Brewers are third-worst in the National League at 4.60 with the starters' numbers even higher at 5.18 and 4.84, respectively. The clubs appear to be in position to acquire young arms as sellers prior to next month's trade deadline with the New York Mets reportedly already inquiring about Oakland third baseman Danny Valencia (.326, 10 home runs, 27 RBIs). The Athletics are expected to have Khris Davis (16 home runs, 45 RBIs) in Tuesday's lineup as the ex-Brewer did not play Sunday after he was removed from Saturday's 7-1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels with a calf injury. Oakland's Sonny Gray is winless in his last eight starts (0-5) and opposes Jimmy Nelson, who has lost three straight.

TV: 10:05 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), CSN California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Jimmy Nelson (5-6, 3.92 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Sonny Gray (3-6, 5.54)

Nelson allowed eight runs (six earned), eight hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innings of a 10-1 loss at San Francisco on Wednesday, raising his ERA 1.04 since his last victory May 29. "It’s very frustrating for me,” the 27-year-old Oregon native told reporters. “The last three (starts) have been completely unacceptable. ... We’ve looked over video from my good starts early and the last couple, and mechanically there’s really not that much difference. That tells you that it’s the mind-set of just keeping the ball down.” Nelson, who has never faced Oakland, is 1-3 with a 6.30 ERA in six road starts this season.

Gray pitched five shutout innings before yielding five runs in the sixth inning and earning a no-decision in the Athletics' 7-5 loss to Texas on Wednesday. "Up until that inning, as good of stuff as we've seen all year,'' Oakland manager Bob Melvin told reporters about the 26-year-old Tennessee native, who was third in the 2015 AL Cy Young award voting and 3-1 with a 2.73 ERA after four starts this season. "He was in command. He was throwing everything for strikes. You're counting pitches to see if he can get all the way through the game, so it was a bit startling." Gray, who has never faced Milwaukee, is 2-3 with a 5.30 ERA in six home starts this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Valencia is batting .338 with 10 home runs and 25 RBIs in 35 games since being reinstated from the disabled list May 6.

2. The Brewers swept a two-game series earlier this month as 1B Chris Carter (18 home runs, 43 RBIs) went deep twice and drove in five runs.

3. Oakland RHP Ryan Dull has stranded all 29 of his inherited runners this season while opponents are 1-for-39 with runners in scoring position against him.

Preview: Nationals at Dodgers

GAME: Washington Nationals (43-28) at Los Angeles Dodgers (39-33)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 21 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Justin Turner has located the power switch and ignited the Los Angeles Dodgers' offense in the process. After belting his fourth homer in as many outings, Turner carries an eight-game hitting streak into the second contest of the three-game series against the visiting Washington Nationals on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old is 14-for-30 with five home runs, 11 RBIs and six runs scored during that stretch for the Dodgers, who have won four in a row and six of seven to move within 5 1/2 games of National League West-leading San Francisco. Joc Pederson also went deep in Monday's 4-1 victory and has five homers in the last nine contests for Los Angeles, which looks to hand NL East-leading Washington its fourth straight loss. Daniel Murphy has overcome a small stumble out to begin June, hitting safely in five straight and 10 of his last 12. The 31-year-old is batting a majors-best .356 and is 2-for-5 with three strikeouts in a small sample size versus Tuesday starter Scott Kazmir.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, MASN (Washington), Sportsnet Los Angeles

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Tanner Roark (6-4, 3.14 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Scott Kazmir (5-3, 4.64)

Roark improved to 3-0 in his last four outings despite yielding four runs on seven hits in six innings of an 8-5 victory over San Diego on Thursday. The 29-year-old has worked at least six frames in 11 of his 14 starts this season - including five of his last six. Roark has yet to record a decision in two relief appearances versus the Los Angeles Dodgers, but has subdued veteran Chase Utley (1-for-10) in his career.

Kazmir saw his pitch count elevate and lead to an early exit Thursday as he yielded three runs on five hits in four innings of a no-decision versus Milwaukee. The 32-year-old has struggled with his control in each of the last two appearances, including a five-walk performance against San Francisco on June 11. Kazmir pitched significantly better in his most recent outing versus Washington, picking up the win after scattering four hits without walking a batter in seven scoreless innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Los Angeles OF Yasiel Puig (strained left hamstring) is expected to be activated from the disabled list Tuesday.

2. Washington 1B Ryan Zimmerman has struck out at least once in 10 straight outings.

3. Dodgers rookie SS Corey Seager has recorded three consecutive multi-hit performances during his five-game hitting streak.
