Preview: Cavaliers (13-2) at Bucks (7-8)

Date: November 29, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

MILWAUKEE -- The Cleveland Cavaliers will see a familiar face Tuesday when they try to extend their four-game winning streak against the Bucks in Milwaukee.

Matthew Dellavedova spent his first three NBA seasons in a Cavaliers uniform and was a key backup on last year's team, which rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the finals to win the franchise's first championship.

"I'm looking forward to catching up with them and seeing them," Dellavedova told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "Obviously you develop strong relationships and friendships with not only the players, but the coaches and training staff."

The 26-year-old signed a $38 million offer sheet from Milwaukee during the off-season and has since moved into a starting role with the Bucks, who coveted his ability to both shoot and defend the 3-pointer.

The move has paid off thus far; Dellavedova is averaging 7.9 points per game and shooting 34 percent from distance.

"It will be a little bit funny playing against them for the first time," Dellavedova said. "But I should know their tendencies pretty well."

Cleveland comes to Milwaukee on a roll, extending their winning streak to four games after a 112-108 victory over the 76ers on Sunday.

The victory came despite a slow start. The Cavaliers missed their first 14 shots and trailed by as many as 14 before closing the first half on a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to six. They outscored Philadelphia 35-27 in the final quarter to pull away for their Eastern Conference-leading 13th victory of the season.

"When you have great players, it can come from any of us at any given moment," Cleveland point guard Kyrie Irving said. "When one of us gets it going, we always continue to go to that person. It can be anybody's night. We're always trusting each other. That fourth quarter was just for me to be aggressive."

The defending NBA champs have won five of their last six contests against the Bucks, including three of the last four in Milwaukee.

They've shot 49 percent during that six-game stretch, averaging 109 points and a margin of victory of 12.2 points per game.

The Bucks beat Orlando 104-96 Sunday, their second victory over the Magic in the last week, but are 3-6 in their last nine games overall.

"We knew we'd have to play better than we did against them at home," Dellavedova said. "The bench came in and did a great job. Hook (John Henson) was great on both ends."

The two teams will meet three times before the year's end, including a back-to-back set Dec. 20 and 21 in Milwaukee and Cleveland, respectively.

"It's going to be a tough game," said Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo. "We've been playing all these good teams and we've been close in every game.

"We're right there; we've just got to open the door."

The Cavaliers are expected to be without Channing Frye, whose father passed away on Thanksgiving. Iman Schumpert is considered questionable with a strained left ankle.

Preview: Lakers (9-9) at Pelicans (6-12)

Date: November 29, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

NEW ORLEANS -- The last time the Pelicans lost a home game they were playing the Los Angeles Lakers.

Now two and a half weeks later, those teams meet again in the Smoothie King Center where New Orleans (6-12) has won four straight games and will try to bounce back after consecutive road losses to the Portland Trail Blazers and Dallas Mavericks.

Los Angeles (9-9), which bounced back from back-to-back losses to the Golden State Warriors to beat the Atlanta Hawks 109-95 at home on Sunday, had an easy time in a 126-99 victory at New Orleans on Nov. 12

Before the two-game road trip, New Orleans had won four straight. It had a 68-62 lead early in the fourth quarter before the NBA-worst Mavericks went on a 27-12 run despite playing without All-Star forward Dirk Nowitzki.

"We just need to go back to what we did in that winning streak -- sharing the ball and having movement," Pelicans rookie guard Buddy Hield told the team's official website. "Everybody was having fun. We need to get that back flowing. The league now is like you lose two in a row, you need to get back to winning. It's tough to get a win in this league."

Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry was tight-lipped after the loss. In his post-game news conference he had a simple explanation for the outcome, saying six different times, nearly verbatim, "they outplayed us and they deserved to win" before ending the brief session.

The loss to the Lakers dropped the Pelicans to 0-5 at home, but they haven't lost there since. Los Angeles led 63-62 in the third quarter when New Orleans forward Anthony Davis, the NBA's leading scorer, went to the locker room to have a stiff lower back treated. In his absence, the Lakers went on a 14-0 run.

Los Angeles showed off its depth in that game as the bench scored 73 points. The Lakers bench was strong again Sunday, outscoring the Hawks bench 65-24 and turning the game around by turning a 32-21 deficit after one quarter into a 56-48 halftime lead.

"The energy that the second unit brought on the defensive end in the second quarter changed the outcome of that game," Lakers coach Luke Walton told the Los Angeles Times. "It's what we have been preaching all year, but it was really the first time that we saw all five guys on the court talking defensively."

The Lakers depth has been tested because of the absence of two starters. Point guard D'Angelo Russell is sidelined because of a left knee injury and power forward Julius Randle has missed the last three games because of a hip injury. Russell is expected to miss at least another week, but Randle traveled with the team in hopes of playing at some point during a four-game road trip that begins Tuesday.

Thomas Robinson, who is with his sixth team since being drafted No. 5 overall in 2012, made his first start of the season in Randle's place against Atlanta. He had nine points and eight rebounds in 15-plus minutes.

"What I didn't do earlier in my career is take baby steps," Robinson told the Lakers' official website. "I just wanted it all at one time. This is what I'm doing now. It's a process and I'll keep growing, keep growing. I'm still young (25), so I have plenty left."

Preview: Magic (6-11) at Spurs (14-3)

Date: November 29, 2016 8:30 PM EDT

Two teams with plenty of new faces heading in different directions will square off on Tuesday when the San Antonio Spurs and Orlando Magic meet at the AT&T Center in San Antonio.

The surging Spurs have won nine straight games, including three straight victories on the road last week, and have picked right up where they left off in from the 2015-16 regular season despite sporting a roster with seven new players.

Meanwhile, the Magic -- with a new coach and a bevy of new different players in different roles -- have lost four consecutive outings.

If the game seems like a foregone conclusion even before its tipoff, remember this: San Antonio has been underwhelming at home, losing all three of its games in the friendly confines of the AT&T Center is a ragged nine-day stretch in the first week of November.

Since a 101-99 loss to Houston on Nov. 9, the Spurs have jelled. Now they have to find a way to reclaim their home mojo. Having Orlando in town might just be the remedy to what's been ailing San Antonio.

"The best thing about this early part of the season is the fact that a lot of the new guys have caught on so quickly," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.

"(Second-year players) Kyle Anderson and Jon Simmons haven't played much before. David Lee, Davis Bertans and Dewayne Dedmon and Pau (Gasol) just all got here, so they've blended in very well pretty quickly. It's been surprising."

San Antonio (13-3) is getting spectacular contributions from star forward Kawhi Leonard, who leads the team in scoring at 24.8 points per game and is the team's scoring leader in 13 of its 16 games.

Forward LaMarcus Aldridge (18.4 points and 6.7 rebounds a game) is also on a nice roll after a bit of a ragged start to the season. Aldridge led the Spurs with 24 points and seven rebounds in their latest outing, a 112-100 victory at Washington.

"We're pretty confident," Aldridge said. "Guys are bringing it every night. We understand what we need to do to be successful and to keep winning -- you have to compete harder. Our guys are locked in."

Orlando (6-11) has lost three in a row at home during its four-game skid, and is 2-5 over its past seven outings. The Magic have scored more than 95 points just once in that stretch and have bene held to under 90 points in four of those seven games.

They head to the Alamo City off a 104-96 loss to Milwaukee on Sunday. Guard Evan Fournier led the Magic against Milwaukee with a game-high 27 points (just two of those in the fourth quarter), seven assists and six rebounds, while forward Serge Ibaka netted 19 points.

After trailing for most of the game, Orlando cut the deficit to 88-86 after center Nikola Vucevic hit a 3-pointer with 6:38 left in the fourth quarter. However, that was as close as the Magic would get as Milwaukee answered with a 13-4 run and sealed the victory. Orlando committed only eight turnovers in that loss, but shot just 41.3 percent from the floor.

The Magic's lineup changes included three new starters on Sunday as coach Frank Vogel continues to look for a winning formula.

"We've just got to keep looking for ways to get better," Vogel said. "I wanted to explore some combinations with the same nine guys in the rotation. It was us trying to get a different feel. There were some good things about the (lineup) change, and some that weren't so good."

Fournier paces the Magic at 17.6 points per game and has led (or tied) the team in scoring eight times and in assists four times this season. He's scored in double figures 16 times and had 20-plus points seven times, including a season-high 29 points on Nov. 3 vs. Sacramento.

The Spurs were 2-0 against Orlando last season, winning 107-92 in Feb. 21 in San Antonio and 98-96 nine nights later in Orlando. San Antonio has 10 straight wins against the Magic, dating to a 123-101 loss in Orlando on Dec, 23, 2010, and have won 40 of the 55 all-time games in the series.

The game in San Antonio is the first of five straight road contests for the Magic, an eight-day trip in which Orlando will also play in Memphis, Philadelphia, Detroit and Washington, D.C.

Free NBA Picks: Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2016, Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews

More bad news for the terrible Dallas Mavericks, who are clearly going to finish with their first losing season since 1999-2000. Future Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki, easily the best player in franchise history, could miss some time again -- or at least is going to sit occasional games into next month. He returned from an eight-game absence due to a strained Achilles on Wednesday and also played Friday but then sat out Sunday. Nowitzki, the sixth-leading scorer in NBA history, has struggled when he has managed to play this season. He has averaged 12.2 points on 35.8 percent shooting in the five games he has played. "He's come a long way in the four-week-plus period, but it's an Achilles strain and it's taking time," Coach Rick Carlisle said. "It's as simple as that, so we have to do whatever is right here to make sure that he is gradually working his way back into this. The way this is going, it's probably not going to be one day he comes in and he's going to be fully recovered. This recovery is going to take some time, a full recovery. My hope is that is that it can be complete sometime in December, but we've just got to be patient."

Pistons at Hornets (-4.5, 199)

Charlotte was in Memphis on Monday. Detroit's two-game winning streak ended in a 106-88 defeat at Oklahoma City on Saturday. Tobias Harris scored 21 points for the Pistons, who have lost five of their past seven. Andre Drummond was held to 10 points and eight rebounds. The Pistons pretty much go as he does. Detroit won two of three against the Hornets last year but has dropped its past three in Charlotte. Hornets head coach Steve Clifford was an assistant coach under Pistons head coach Stan Van Gundy with the Orlando Magic from 2007-12.

Key trends: The favorite is 6-0 against the spread in the past six meetings. The "over/under" is 10-1 in Charlotte's past 11 in the second of a back-to-back.

Early lean: Hornets and over.

Clippers at Nets (+11, 212.5)

The Clippers dropped a second straight Sunday, 91-70 at Indiana. L.A. shot just 31.4 percent from the field and was 4-for-24 from 3-point range. Really no excuse for that result considering the Pacers were without Paul George. It was the first time ever under Doc Rivers that the Clippers were held under 80 points. Brooklyn lost a seventh straight game on Sunday, 122-105 at home to the Kings. Starting forward Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (ankle) missed a second straight game and was limited at Monday's practice, so it's not looking great for him here. Los Angeles has won three straight in this series after a 127-95 home blowout victory on Nov. 14. The Clips had 35 points off 22 Brooklyn turnovers.

Key trends: The Clippers are 1-15 ATS in their past 16 at the Nets. Wow! The under is 7-1 in Brooklyn's past eight at home against teams with a winning road record.

Early lean: Nets and under.

Cavaliers at Bucks (+7.5, 210.5)

Cleveland won its fourth in a row Sunday but almost was caught in a trap in Philadelphia, winning 112-108. Kyrie Irving scored 19 of his season-high 39 points in the fourth quarter and LeBron James had a triple-double with 26 points, 10 rebounds and 13 assists. The Cavaliers, who missed their first 14 shots, never led through the first three quarters. Channing Frye (personal) was not with the team after his father passed away. Milwaukee won in Orlando on Sunday, 104-96. John Henson returned to the Bucks' starting lineup and had 20 points and seven rebounds. Henson was a DNP-CD on Friday. Cleveland was 3-1 vs. Milwaukee last year, with the Cavs' three wins each by at least nine and the loss in double overtime.

Key trends: The Cavs are 2-7-1 ATS in their past nine vs. the East. The over is 5-1 in the previous six meetings.

Early lean: Bucks and over.

Lakers at Pelicans (TBA)

Los Angeles beat Atlanta 109-94 on Sunday to complete the season sweep of the Hawks. Lou Williams scored 13 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter. D'Angelo Russell remained out and won't play this week, while Julius Randle missed a third game with a hip injury. New Orleans lost a second in a row Sunday, 91-81 in Dallas. Anthony Davis had 36 points and 13 rebounds. The Pelicans have lost big man Dante Cunningham for at least a month with a fractured right fibula. New Orleans lost in Los Angeles 126-99 on Nov. 12. The Lakers shot 55.3 percent overall and were 16 of 30 from long range. Davis scored 34 for New Orleans but left the game for a bit in the third quarter with an injury, and that's when L.A. pulled away.

Key trends: The Pelicans are 4-0 ATS in their past four at home. The over is 6-0 in the Lakers' past six after a win.

Early lean: I guess this is TBA for Randle. Not sure he matters that much. Go Pelicans.

Magic at Spurs (-12, 194)

Orlando lost a fourth in a row Sunday, 104-96 to the Bucks. Coach Frank Vogel inserted D.J. Augustin, Aaron Gordon and Bismack Biyombo into the starting lineup looking for a spark, but it didn't help. Gordon had eight rebounds but was 0-for-12 from the field and didn't score. I thought that guy would have been a lot better pro. San Antonio won its ninth consecutive game Saturday, 112-100 at Washington. San Antonio's bench outscored Washington's reserves 35-18. Orlando was swept by San Antonio last year and is just 4-24 all-time visiting the Spurs, who have won the past 10 in the series overall.

Key trends: The Magic are 4-1 ATS in the past five meetings. The under is 10-4 in the Spurs' past 14.

Early lean: Magic and under.

Rockets at Jazz (pick'em, 201.5)

NBA TV game. Utah was in Minnesota on Monday. Derrick Favors (left knee) did not travel with the team there, so he pretty clearly isn't going to play here, either. Boris Diaw should continue to start in his absence. Houston won a second in a row Sunday, 130-114 in Portland. James Harden had 38 points and 10 assists for his seventh consecutive double-double. Houston beat visiting Utah 111-102 on Nov. 19. The Jazz outshot the Rockets 51.3 percent to 44.7 percent and outrebounded the Rockets 43-39, but Houston had just five turnovers. Harden had 31 points and 10 assists.

Key trends: The home team is 6-2 ATS in the past eight. The under is 7-3 in the past 10 in Utah.

Early lean: Jazz and under.

Preview: North Dakota State Bison (5-2) at Xavier Musketeers (6-0)

Date: November 29, 2016 6:30 PM EDT

CINCINNATI -- Seventh-ranked Xavier allowed an average of 83 points in its first five games.

But, in the past two contests, both against Northern Iowa -- one of the nation's best 3-point shooting teams -- the Musketeers gave up only 59 and 42 points, respectively.

Defense was a struggle for Xavier at times last season, too. But, it appears this season's team is beginning to figure things out at that end of the floor.

"I don't worry about offense, I never do," said head coach Chris Mack. "We'll figure out ways to score. We're going to have those nights when we don't. But if we defend at this level, we'll be in most every game we play."

The Musketeers finally get to face a new opponent when they host North Dakota State on Tuesday night (6:30 p.m. ET) at Cintas Center.

Among the keys to the turnaround is the maturation of point guard Edmond Sumner, a dynamic offensive player who's taken some time to develop into a quality defender. He held Northern Iowa's hot shooting guard Jeremy Morgan scoreless in the first half of Saturday's 64-42 win.

"Edmond a year ago was lost off the ball," said Mack. "He's grown up a lot."

Xavier (6-0) played Northern Iowa twice in six days -- in the championship game of the Tire Pros Invitational in Orlando (won by Xavier 67-59) and in Saturday's regularly scheduled matchup at Cintas Center.

It was the first time since 1960 that the Musketeers played the same non-conference opponent in consecutive games.

Now Xavier faces an opponent it has never met.

The Bison (5-2) are coming off a 64-50 loss to Missouri State on Sunday in which they couldn't overcome a 17-point halftime deficit. North Dakota State got 19 points from sophomore guard Khy Kabellis and Paul Miller finished with nine, but it never was closer than 10 points after halftime.

The Bison boast one of the nation's top 3-point shooters in junior guard A.J. Jacobson, although he connected just once in Sunday's loss. He is 14-of-18 from beyond the arc this season. The Bison shoot 36 percent as a team from 3-point range.

Kabellis getting on a roll bodes well for North Dakota State. He scored 13 of his points in the second half and was 3 of 7 from 3-point range Sunday.

"It was nice to see him get going," Bison coach David Richman told the Fargo Form. "We needed that from the start though, from everybody."

The Bison will need contributions from everyone if they are going to be competitive against Xavier, a top-10 Big East Conference opponent on the road.

The Musketeers are firing on all cylinders, led by J.P. Macura, who's averaging 17.7 points and 3.5 assists. Guards Trevon Bluiett and Sumner both are averaging better than 16 points per game.

Xavier must not get caught looking ahead to Saturday's clash with No. 9 Baylor in Waco, Texas.

"Good teams lock in on the challenge and the moment," said Mack.

Preview: Villanova Wildcats (6-0) at Pennsylvania Quakers (2-2)

Date: November 29, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

PHILADELPHIA -- The defending national champion Villanova Wildcats opened the 2016-17 season with six games in 13 days.

It was a grueling stretch for the No. 2-ranked team.

But they came away with six victories, including their most recent 63-47 win over the College of Charleston last Wednesday. After the win, the victorious Wildcats looked a bit weary.

A much-needed break was waiting and they'll now be rested and ready when they open the Big Five portion of their schedule Tuesday night versus city rival Penn (7 p.m. ET) at the Palestra.

"This break comes at a good time for us," Villanova head coach Jay Wright said. "It was good for us to experience this. We got a lot of our offense and defense in knowing that we would face this stretch where we wouldn't get a lot of practice in. I think it paid off for us. We were prepared but, on the other hand, I don't know if we were mentally prepared for this many games back-to-back. We had a couple of them -- Western Michigan, maybe this one -- where we didn't have great energy."

Preseason player-of-the-year candidate Josh Hart led the way against the Cougars with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Hart has been a team leader and a budding star thus far this season.

"We need to learn to bring it every night," Wright said. "That was the key to Ryan (Arcidiacono) and Daniel (Ochefu) last year. They had a mature approach to every game. Their approach was like that of a 15-year NBA veteran -- they came to work every day. Josh is really getting good at that. But our team's got to get good at that."

The Quakers (2-2) opened their season with four consecutive road games -- wins at Robert Morris and Central Connecticut State and a loss at Miami and, most recently, a two-point loss at Navy last Wednesday.

Junior Caleb Wood led Penn in scoring for the second game in a row with 15 points at Navy.

Sophomore Jackson Donahue knocked down four treys, which are as many as he hit in the Quakers' first three games combined. Donahue added six assists for a career high.

But Penn made just four -- and attempted six -- free throws with none coming in the second half.

Now the Quakers get a chance to come back home with a difficult matchup in Villanova. It's a daunting task for sure.

"It isn't easy to play on the road in college basketball, and we've started the season with four straight away from home," Penn head coach Steve Donahue told the Daily Pennsylvanian after the loss at Navy. "Winning this game would've been a great step for us, but I think regardless of the result we showed some of the growth this team has had in the past couple weeks. It's just about overcoming some of the things we didn't do well today and getting ready for a tough game against Villanova."

Preview: Syracuse Orange (4-1) at Wisconsin Badgers (5-2)

Date: November 29, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

The Big Ten/ACC Challenge game between No. 17 Wisconsin and No. 22 Syracuse on Tuesday features two teams that faced each other last year in the event, but this meeting is in a different location.

The Badgers (5-2) host the Orange on Tuesday (7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN) at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis. Last season, the Badgers upset then-No. 17 Syracuse 66-58 in overtime at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y.

Wisconsin forward Ethan Happ posted a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds in the victory, in which the Badgers scored 13 of the final 16 points in the extra session and were 7 of 7 from the free-throw line. Senior forward Nigel Hayes contributed 15 points and 12 rebounds for Wisconsin.

Syracuse senior guard Andrew White III, a graduate transfer from Nebraska, scored 10 points apiece in two games last season against Wisconsin while playing for the Cornhuskers. White is the Orange's current scoring leader at 15.8 points per game

Syracuse (4-1) took its first loss of the season Saturday, a 64-50 setback to South Carolina in the Brooklyn Hoops Holiday Invitational.

The Orange's roster is filled with new and young players vying for key minutes, including sophomore guard Frank Howard, freshman forward Taurean Thompson and guard John Gillon, a transfer from Colorado State.

Orange coach Jim Boeheim said his team looked "a little bit lost" with a lack of ball movement and dribble penetration, and Syracuse also missed 10 of 26 free throws against South Carolina.

Boeheim's ideal situation would be putting Howard and Gillon in at guard and having White at a forward spot. However, he said Thompson likely is the team's best low-post option, and he would like the freshman to get more touches.

"We don't have a low-post game, so we have to get penetration from our guards," the coach said.

Boeheim said the atmosphere of the South Carolina game at the Barclays Center wasn't a problem for his young players. Still, the Orange shot just 31.8 percent (14 of 44) from the field and only had eight points in the paint.

"It shouldn't be (a problem)," Boeheim said. "(The fans) were on our side. If they have a problem with this, they're really going to have a problem Tuesday night when we go to Wisconsin. Our young guys have got a lot to learn."

Wisconsin coach Greg Gard got the opportunity to spread minutes to reserves in easy wins at home, but the veteran Badgers will have to place focus on attacking the rim, decreasing turnovers and not relying on their perimeter game.

Hayes scored 17 points in 19 minutes in a 95-50 blowout of Prairie View A&M on Sunday to lead six Wisconsin players who scored in double digits. Senior guard Bronson Koenig's leadership will be critical against Syracuse. Koenig drained a 3-pointer and had a free throw to rally Wisconsin and force overtime last season at the Carrier Dome.

Gard said he is confident his team will perform well if the Badgers stay focused, despite the short preparation time.

"They're really good and talented," Gard said of the Orange. "Coach Boeheim, obviously, has been there forever, and they're really good at what they do.

"It's a quick turnaround to play that type of team in 48 hours with one practice, but we have to build off of (the Prairie View A&M game)."

Preview: Rhode Island Rams (5-1) at Valparaiso Crusaders (6-1)

Date: November 29, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

No. 23 Rhode Island extended its strong start Saturday night -- and didn't even do it on the basketball court.

Dan Hurley's players, who won their only game last week -- over Belmont -- and should remain ranked when the new poll comes out Monday, served dinner and prepared beds at the Providence Rescue Mission, according to a post on the team's Twitter account.

It was another quality effort by a team off to a 5-1 start, the only loss to then-No. 1 Duke.

Now, it's back to work -- and this will be a test for the Rams.

Rhode Island visits Valparaiso (6-1) on Tuesday and then has its always tough local rivalry game against Providence at the Dunkin' Donuts Center -- the Friars' home floor -- Saturday.

Hassan Martin scored 34 points and Jarvis Garrett, over his neck injury suffered against Cincinnati in the semifinal of the Hall of Fame Tip-Off, added 23 in the win over Belmont, the preseason favorite in the Ohio Valley Conference.

"Once I got myself going I just didn't stop," Martin said after going 14-for-20 from the floor and adding five rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals. "That's why I had that type of game."

Martin will be needed against Valparaiso, which beat Ball State 79-73 at home Sunday and now hosts a ranked team for the first time in six years.

The Crusaders came off the road and ran up 17 steals while forcing 23 turnovers and overcoming a slow start to win against Ball State.

"We talked about a nine-day road trip and the challenges that presents," Valparaiso coach Matt Lottich said after Sunday's game. "Fatigue, just the normal human tendency maybe after a couple big wins to maybe let up a little bit. I thought our energy lacked a little bit (in the first half), but we were playing hard."

Alec Peters scored 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds to key Sunday's win and continue his torrid start. Through seven games, he is averaging 25.1 points and 9.1 rebounds while Shane Hammink is at 16.1 and 5.6 per game.

The Rams have four starters scoring in double figures, led by Martin at 16.5 points per game and E.C. Matthews at 15.5. Jared Terrell is averaging 14.3 points and Kuran Iverson 11.0 points and 6.2 rebounds. Martin leads with 7.0 rebounds while Garrett has a team-high 27 assists and 12 turnovers.

Rhode Island ended a stretch of five games in 10 days with the loss to Duke, which followed a win over then-No. 24 Cincinnati the previous night.

The win over Belmont, which was missing its best player, Evan Bradds, featured the Rams with a 30- and 20-point scorer in the same game for the first time in almost two years.

Preview: Long Beach State 49ers (1-7) at Kansas Jayhawks (5-1)

Date: November 29, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

The dogged ability of Frank Mason to drive to the rim coupled with the streaky outside shooting touch possessed by Devonte' Graham are what gets noticed most about the smaller guards in the Kansas backcourt.

Yet each guard contributes in other ways, as evidenced by the 11 assists Graham distributed in the No. 4 Jayhawks' last victory, a 95-57 rout of North Carolina-Asheville.

"I thought (Graham) was really good," Kansas coach Bill Self said. "Frank scored the points (21), but I thought Devonte' was certainly the facilitator."

Graham did so while surrounded by new starters.

Self altered his lineup to include freshman center Udoka Azubuike and sophomore guard Lagerald Vick. Each contributed mightily, combining for 32 points. Azubuike slammed seven dunks while going 8-for-9 from the field and Vick went 6-for-7 and grabbed nine rebounds.

Expect the new lineup, which also features one of the nation's top freshmen, 6-foot-8 guard Josh Jackson, to remain intact as Kansas (5-1) continues a five-game homestand Tuesday against Long Beach State (1-7) at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kan.

"If Dok and Lagerald play like that," said Self, "that's the best production we've gotten all year long from those two spots, so it could be permanent."

That, of course, was meant as a motivational message, laced in truth, to the players they supplanted in the starting lineup, senior center Landen Lucas and sophomore forward Carlton Bragg.

Count on Mason and Graham to be regulars, however, along with Jackson.

Mason has topped the Jayhawks in scoring in five of six games and ranks second in the Big 12 Conference with a 21.5-point average while chipping in 5.0 assists and 4.3 rebounds. Graham averages 13 points and leads the Jayhawks in assists (34) and steals (10). Jackson averages 14.3 points, 5.0 assists and 4.3 rebounds.

With those three players as mainstays, Self has the depth to use different combinations best suited for the opponents Kansas faces.

Considering Azubuike checks in as a 7-footer listed at 280 pounds, the Jayhawks have a frontline force who can impact the lane as long as he stays out of foul trouble.

"We'll start based on scouting report a lot of times, and we haven't ever done that," Self projected. "But if a team plays small, we'll probably go small. If a team plays two bigs, we may go two bigs. But certainly it was nice to see Udoka have some success because, you know, he is a physical presence that we don't have and he can get so much better."

Long Beach State, the preseason Big West favorite, will be making its eighth stop as part of a nine-game road swing. The brutal stretch has resulted in seven straight defeats -- at Wichita State, North Carolina, Louisville, UCLA, Washington, Binghamton and Florida Gulf Coast. The 49ers' only win was at home in their opener against Cal State-Los Angeles.

In its most recent game, Long Beach scored the first five points in overtime but lost to Florida Gulf Coast 68-67 on a layup with 2.4 seconds remaining.

Although Dan Monson approved the grueling early-season run as a method to strengthen the 49ers' resolve, and resume', the 10th-year coach expressed some regret.

"I'm really concerned about them mentally because of all the years I've done this, this has been the hardest stretch and this team was not ready for it," Monson told the Orange County Register.

The schedule has also prompted Monson to look at various combinations. Ten players average 11-plus minutes.

Junior forward Gabe Levin leads Long Beach State in scoring (13.0) and rebounding (7.6).

Preview: Buffalo Bulls (4-2) at Creighton Bluejays (6-0)

Date: November 29, 2016 8:30 PM EDT

Creighton begins the third week of the regular season, featuring a pair of games against Mid-American Conference opponents, from a higher perch in the Associated Press rankings.

The 6-0 Bluejays jumped two spots to No. 10 in the latest rankings, released Monday. It's the third time in school history that Creighton has appeared in the Top 10 since the poll was founded in 1949.

Jays coach Greg McDermott said the new rating is a nice way to show how the season is progressing for Creighton, which is one of three Big East teams in the Top 10.

"Because we started the preseason ranked in the Top 25 it means you've played okay so far," McDermott said. "We've taken care of business to this point. Our offense has been incredibly efficient but those polls mean a lot more later in the season than they do now."

McDermott said he talked with the team before the new ratings were published about the importance of remembering where the Bluejays were less than a year ago and the role they had in these kinds of games.

"We have to remember back last year when we went on the road to Providence, Butler, Xavier and Villanova, Seton Hall, teams that were ranked in the Top 25," McDermott said. "How you have just a little bit extra motivation when you go into those environments."

That's the perspective Buffalo will have when the Bulls play the Jays in Tuesday's 7:45 p.m. showdown at CenturyLink Center. The Bulls, who are the defending MAC postseason tournament champions, enter the game 4-2 after finishing third at last week's Great Alaska Shootout.

"Now the shoe is on the other foot," McDermott said. "A team like Buffalo comes in here in search of a signature win. They're an NCAA tournament team from a year ago, and they played very well in the NCAA tournament. A lot of those guys return."

Blake Hamilton leads the Bulls with 16.7 points per game and is second in both rebounds (6.7) and assists (4.2). Leading rebounder Nick Perkins is second in scoring at 13.7 per game to go with his 8.2 boards per outing.

Creighton counters with its deep offensive rotation that leads the nation in three-point shooting (47.9 percent) and is second in overall field goal percentage (.547) while averaging 91.8 points per game. That number puts the Jays eighth nationally in scoring.

Marcus Foster was named player of the week while Justin Patton earned freshman of the week honors in the Big East Conference. Foster averaged 20.5 points and 3.5 rebounds in Creighton's two victories last week.

Patton averaged 14 points and 5.5 rebounds in those same two games. The 7-foot redshirt freshman from Omaha North also had two assists, two blocked shots and a steal. Patton scored 22 of his 28 points in the second half of those wins over Mississippi and Loyola (Md.).

"It means a lot to me because I take my game week by week every week," Foster said. "My teammates really helped me get it. They looked for me a lot and I got (some) easy baskets from them."

Preview: Michigan State Spartans (4-3) at Duke Blue Devils (6-1)

Date: November 29, 2016 9:30 PM EDT

DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke is ready for another test from an established opponent, while Michigan State has probably seen enough of the elite teams so far this season.

The teams clash Tuesday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium as part of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.

"They're going to be hungry," Duke guard Matt Jones said. "It should be a good matchup for us. I know our guys will be ready for it."

Fifth-ranked Duke (6-1) is riding a four-game winning since losing to Kansas. Michigan State responded to place third in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, but it has been a treacherous opening stretch for the Spartans (4-3), who've fallen out of the national rankings under coach Tom Izzo.

"Tom's team has a played a heck of a schedule and they've had some injuries as well," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said.

Duke won't have heralded freshmen Marques Bolden, Harry Giles or Jayson Tatum for this game, Krzyzewski said, as none of them has made a collegiate debut due to various injuries. However, Bolden and Giles both appear closer to being available after going through warm-ups with the Blue Devils prior to two games last week.

Izzo said his team has looked fatigued during the opening weeks.

"With this travel schedule we're on, we're bound to be fatigued a little bit," Izzo said. "And worse than anything is we looked soft inside. That almost never happens here. Some of it is due to injury."

But the Blue Devils are expecting Michigan State's top effort.

"They're tough and we're playing against a program, not a team," Krzyzewski said. "...I admire what they do. Hopefully, I won't admire a lot of what they do on Tuesday, but we know we're in for a big-time game, which is good because that's how we'll get better."

Duke has won at least six of its first seven games for the 17th season in a row. Plus, the Blue Devils own a 129-game homecourt winning streak against non-conference competition.

Michigan State has not allowed an opponent to shoot 50 percent this season, while five of the foes have checked in at less than 40 percent from the field.

The Blue Devils have scored at least 70 points in every game. Only three Michigan State opponents have eclipsed 70 points, and the Spartans won two of those games.

Duke is trying to excel in different types of games.

"Game by game, play by play, possession by possession, we are starting to learn each other and we're getting better," said Jones, a senior who's expected to be one of the team's leaders. "I think that we're leading the guys better and those guys are working hard. Guys are getting experience."

Most of concern to Izzo this month has been shortcomings in toughness and rebounding, the latter coming in part because of a lack of size.

"We're going to find a way," Izzo said. "There's a lot of encouragement. We're going to find a way to get that back."

Krzyzewski called Michigan State freshman swingman Miles Bridges "a big-time player." He has scored at least 20 points in four of his seven games.

Duke freshman guard Frank Jackson has led his team in scoring three times, scoring in double figures in every game.

After Tuesday, the Spartans, who've already traveled to Honolulu, New York and the Bahamas, will play their next five games at home.

Duke has won 10 of 12 meetings with Michigan State, including the last five. This will be will the sixth meeting between the programs since 2010.

The Blue Devils are 15-2 all-time in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, marking both the most victories and best winning percentage of any team in either league. Duke is 3-0 against Michigan State in ACC-Big Ten Challenge games, while the Blue Devils are 7-0 in Challenge games at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Spartans’ losses are by 2-21-15 points; they’re turning ball over 22% of time.* and this is their first true road game. State lost its last four games with Duke, by 10-10-20-5 points; last meetings were two years ago. Young Duke (#343 in bench minutes) has been hampered by injuries; they’re 6-1 with a 77-75 neutral court loss to Kansas.

Nevada was 27-43 on foul line in 85-82 double OT win at Pacific LY; that broke a 3-game skid against the Tigers are 2-2 this year with a new coach, playing much faster tempo. # 9 KC RAMBUCTIOUS BOY 5/2
# 5 SOUTHWIND WHISKI 3/1
# 1 ROCKY REGAL 3/1

The pick today is KC RAMBUCTIOUS BOY. May provide us a score based on really good recent speed ratings - earning an avg of 84. This gelding has been battling against some of the most competitive horses in this field these days. This harness racer earned a competitive speed figure last time out. Looks sharp to come right back. SOUTHWIND WHISKI - Racing strongly, earned a huge TrackMaster speed fig in his last contest (80). The 5 slot sports a much better than average win clip at Pompano Park. ROCKY REGAL - His 81 average has this gelding among the most compelling TrackMaster Speed Ratings today. Many handicappers will recognize the great TrackMaster Speed Rating in the last race. Stacks up against any horse in this field of horses.

# 6 PUT SARAH ON 8/1

# 4 SIMPLY NAKED 6/1

# 10 CASSIDY COMMAND 9/2

PUT SARAH ON is tough to overlook as the wager in here and is a very good value bet given the line at 8/1. SIMPLY NAKED - Has been consistently running well lately. CASSIDY COMMAND - With a formidable 66 average speed figure at the distance, seems well suited for today's race. Has a sharp record at the distance and surface, which makes me favor this mare.

# 5 BERT'S BABY 5/2

# 2 SAINT SYLVIE 3/1

# 6 NATIVE SPEAKER 3/1

BERT'S BABY looks to be a very strong contender. She has been running admirably lately while recording sharp Speed Figures. Silva has her trained admirably to break swiftly out of the starting gate. Is a strong contender based on numbers put up recently under today's conditions. SAINT SYLVIE - Might best this group here, showing decent numbers of late. This filly looks very good for this event since Silva has a strong win percentage with horses going this distance. NATIVE SPEAKER - She looks very good in this slot and I expect will be on the front end or close at the halfway point. Could beat this group given the 59 speed rating garnered in her last outing.

Rating:

#9 SHOE GAME (ML=5/2)
#5 MISS BULA BULA (ML=4/1)

SHOE GAME - I like to bet on this handicapping theory, a campaigner coming back off a nice effort within the last month. On board this animal on Nov 8th and Eikleberry is back again in the irons in today's contest. Note that although this filly finished in the place spot in her last race, she was well in front of the third place horse. This is a classic positive angle. Filly took a little vacation, but has been racing into shape. Another way to evaluate class is earnings per race entered. This thoroughbred has the topmost in the field. I think she'll be close at the end. MISS BULA BULA - The morning line odds on this filly are higher than those of the other entrant from the shedrow of conditioner Dominguez. Often the longer-priced part of a 'split' entry wins.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 RUNAWAY NONNY (ML=7/2), #8 WARM SUNSHINE (ML=9/2), #7 SPRINGTIME RAIN (ML=5/1),

RUNAWAY NONNY - Not a perfect 'fit' in this clash. WARM SUNSHINE - Don't think that this filly has value at 9/2 in today's event. SPRINGTIME RAIN - Trying to beat this entrant this time at the price of 5/1.

#4 PARRY O PESSIMIST (ML=3/1)

PARRY O PESSIMIST - Looking at the pps on all of these thoroughbreds, this is the only one to stalk. Worth a long hard look at this animal. This filly has been posting some excellent workout times. Ran last time out against better company at Belterra Park. The move down the ladder based on class rating points should suit her well.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 BAYLEE'S BOMBER (ML=5/2), #1A HIGHLY VISIBLE (ML=7/2), #1 ANGELOFTHEMORNING (ML=7/2),

BAYLEE'S BOMBER - You should normally gamble against favorites that haven't raced or show no activity in the morning over the last three weeks. While Equibase's speed ratings are strong, I would ignore the high one from the Oct 28th on a track listed as good. Some horses just run well on the off going. HIGHLY VISIBLE - That was merely not a very good exhibition in the last affair. Tough to like the downward flow (46/32/8) of speed ratings. ANGELOFTHEMORNING - Awfully difficult to play this pony when she hasn't been showing any signs of life recently.

Yonkers: Tuesday 11/29 Analysis
By Matt Rose

DRF

MEET STATS: 423 - 1213 / $2,315.50

BEST BETS: 55 - 99 / $186.30

Best Bet: ST JAMES GATE (10th)

Spot Play: ROCK ICON (6th)

Race 1

(1) ANNUITY went down the road last out from the rail spot and is in line to repeat. (3) FRATERNITY was used and battled hard before giving way as the big chalk ending his streak; price will be better today. (2) AUCKLAND FLYER takes a meaningful drop in class and draws well.

Race 2

(5) COOL DESIRE arrives from The Meadows and debuts for the Nick Clegg barn; 4-year-old has made decent money this season. (4) ARABELLA J tried hard from the outside post last out and understandably tired. (2) SHE SAID looks for two straight at this basement claiming level.

Race 3

(3) UPFRONT LORNE makes his second start for new connections with a better post and he should be in line for a smoother trip. (5) MAJOR HOMER gets Bartlett back in the bike for Milici and he'll be on the move early. (1) LYONS AGAIN is an interesting Canadian shipper for Allard but he's missed a month; let's watch one.

Race 4

(1) CANACO STAR is back on the rail and should control the action. (4) AMBRO COURAGE N returns locally and was a big upset winner at this level three back. (3) HERETIC FRANCO N has become completely erratic and unreliable but one of these weeks he'll put it together and pop at a price.

Race 5

(6) ALWAYS N THE MONEY drops a notch, picks up Bartlett and may be more aggressively handled. (4) OUR JERRY LEE N gets Sears upon arrival from The Meadowlands. (3) BRINGHOME THEBLUE returns from Pocono and was MacDonald's choice.

Race 6

(4) ROCK ICON returns to the Godinez barn via claim and he's beaten much better than these in the past. (1) NATURAL LEDA draws best and is in line for a live trip. (3) SIGN TO INVERELL A paces evenly most starts and could hit the ticket from this spot.

Race 7

(9) TACO TUESDAY broke in his local and Milici debut but he gets Bartlett in the bike today and deserves another chance. (6) WHAT A PEACH ships in from Pocono and looks like a solid speed threat. (10) DEWDLE ALL DAY was MacDonald's choice and she rallied well for second last week.

Race 8

(6) GLOBAL REVOLUTION really hasn't put in a bad race locally and he can be a decent price in this open event. (8) DANCING HALL ships in and has Dube driving for Svanstedt; good angle. (4) EMERALD CHIP seems capable of landing a share from this spot.

Race 9

(1) WANNA MAKE MONEY is another Pocono shipper in fine form who should fit well in here. (9) ITS CHOCOLATE TIME arrives locally now in the Godinez barn and the gelding has had some decent efforts sprinkled in; consider. (10) MASS BALANCE just missed last week as the odds-on favorite; better price today.

Race 10

(5) ST JAMES GATE took money but broke last week in his local debut; he gets a big driver upgrade to Zeron today. (4) BEST TURBO has raced well in defeat in her last few starts and would certainly be no surprise here. (10) GIDS PASSION was second best out of the eight hole last week; a smooth second-tier trip can land him a piece.

Race 11

(7) SOUTHERN CROSS two-moved and coasted down the road last week for the Svanstedt barn; he faces a bit tougher here but seems good enough to repeat. (6) TRIUMPHANT'S CHIP was game in defeat last out and can certainly be considered. (3) MADMAN HALL went down very stubbornly last week finishing fourth in a blanket photo; Schnittker trainee is a proven commodity with these.
