Resurgent George has Indiana on pace for huge NBA betting profits
By BIG AL MCMORDIE

It's Thanksgiving Week, and fans of the Golden State Warriors have much to be thankful for. After all, their Dubs are 15-0, which equals the best start in NBA history (shared with the 1948-49 Washington Capitals and the 1993-94 Houston Rockets).

But before we crown the Warriors seven months in advance of the NBA Finals, it's wise to remember the 2002-03 Dallas Mavericks, who started that season 13-0, and had outscored foes by 15.21 ppg. Those Mavs finished that season at 60-22 (+7.78 margin of victory), but ended up losing to the Spurs in the Western Conference Finals.

Thirteen years later, nobody remembers those Mavericks. So, unless the Warriors go on to break Chicago's 72-10 season record and/or win the title, their hot start to this season will be but a footnote in history. Let's take a look at the other developing storylines in this young season.

Spread watch

One could be forgiven if they overlooked the Indiana Pacers at the start of the season. After all, the Pacers were without Paul George last season, and missed the playoffs after going 38-44. But George has returned with a vengeance and is playing at an All-Star level. His Player Efficiency Rating is 24.1, which ranks 11th in the NBA among rotation players.

Not surprisingly, the Pacers are 8-5 SU this season and 9-1 ATS their last 10 games. They'll play at the Wizards Tuesday before coming home to take on the Bulls Friday. And that's a game to circle, as Indiana will be out for blood after losing 96-95 (but covering) at Chicago, on November 16.

George had 26 points, seven rebounds and five assists in that game, but his potential game winner was blocked by Jimmy Butler. The Bulls, under new coach Fred Hoiberg, have underwhelmed at the window as they're a money-burning 4-8 ATS this season, including 0-3 ATS versus division rivals.

Total watch

Last season, the Milwaukee Bucks were terrific on defense and ranked among the league's Top 4 in defensive efficiency (along with the Warriors, Spurs and Grizzlies). Milwaukee allowed just 97.4 ppg in the regular season, and went 39-49 Over/Under in the regular season and playoffs, combined. But this season, the script has flipped, and the Bucks rank dead last in defensive efficiency.

Certainly, the departures of Zaza Pachulia and Jared Dudley are a major part of the reason why the Bucks have slipped in a major way. And Milwaukee's problems on the defensive end are largely responsible for its 8-5 O/U record, including going Over in its last five.

This week, the Bucks will play at home against Detroit and Sacramento before Thanksgiving, and then take to the road after the holiday to play Orlando and Charlotte. In particular, the Wednesday night game versus the Kings is one to watch. Sacramento also ranks among the league's bottom 10 in defense, and the last five meetings between these two have sailed Over the total.

Injury watch

LaMarcus Aldridge injured his left ankle in San Antonio's loss at New Orleans, and sat out Saturday's home game versus Memphis. Aldridge is second on the team in scoring (15.3 ppg), and first in rebounding (9.9 rpg). And his presence is key on a team which has transformed its offense to capitalize on the strengths of Aldridge and Kawhi Leonard.

The Spurs lead the league in post touches but without Aldridge in the lineup on Saturday, the Grizzlies were able to double-team Leonard, and he struggled shooting (5 for 15). Check Aldridge's status prior to Monday's game versus Phoenix. The Suns are 8-4 ATS their last 12 games and are 3-1-1 ATS their last five in the Alamo City.

Schedule watch

When handicapping early season NBA, it's important to bear in mind the vast differences that teams experience in their schedule. Some teams start the season with a heavy dose of home cooking, while others pack their suitcases for long road trips. And some teams play more cupcakes than others.

Thus, when evaluating a team's record, one can't just look at the win/loss column or even margin of victory, as those numbers could be skewed by other factors. This year, for example, the Utah Jazz are 6-6 (+2.7 margin), but have played just three of their 12 games at home. Conversely, the Miami Heat are 8-4 (+4.8 margin), but have played nine of their 12 games at home.

The Jazz will play their fourth home game, Tuesday, versus Oklahoma City (+4.5 margin). But the Thunder have played nine of their 14 games at home this season, so we could have some pointspread value with Utah in that game.

Likewise, on Wednesday, Miami will travel to Detroit (+0.5 margin). But the Pistons will have played just five of their 14 games, to that point, at home. Once again, the pointspread value might rest with Detroit.

NBA Odds: Tuesday, November 24 2015 Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews

So what's the most unlikely NBA regular-season single-game result you can remember? I can recall one of the top of my head, and that was on Dec. 9, 2004, when Houston was down 10 points with 1:02 left against San Antonio but the Rockets' Tracy McGrady scored 13 points in the final 35 seconds, including the winning 3-pointer. One I didn't see but have heard about was on Nov. 18, 1972, when the New York Knicks trailed the Milwaukee Bucks 86-68 but scored 19 straight points in the final 5:11 to win at Madison Square Garden. I mention those two games because probably the most unlikely result of this century thus far would be if the 2-11 Los Angeles Lakers won at 15-0 Golden State on Tuesday night as the Warriors try for history.

Pacers at Wizards (TBA)

Indiana beat Milwaukee 123-86 on Saturday for its second straight win. C.J. Miles had a season-high 21 points and Paul George 20. Indiana outscored Milwaukee 35-16 in the third quarter. Pacers starting guard George Hill missed his third straight game with an upper respiratory infection. He dressed and was available in the case of an emergency, Pacers coach Frank Vogel said before the game. So there's a decent chance he plays here. Washington won 97-95 at Detroit on Saturday for its third straight victory. The Wizards' reserves outscored Detroit's 51-15. Nene had 18 points on 9-of-10 shooting and was a plus-24 off the bench. Wizards guard Bradley Beal returned to the lineup after missing three games with a shoulder injury. These teams split four games last year, each 1-1 at home.

Key trends: The road team is 10-1 against the spread in the past 11 meetings. The "over/under" is 4-0 in the past four.

Early lean: Wizards win.

Celtics at Hawks (-4, 203)

Because there are no NBA games on Thanksgiving, TNT has a doubleheader on Tuesday this week, and this is your first game so will have live betting at sportsbooks. Boston lost the back end of a home-and-home on Sunday in Brooklyn, 111-101. And the Celtics lost starting guard Marcus Smart to a lower left leg injury that likely will keep him out at least a few weeks. Atlanta lost 109-97 in Cleveland on Saturday, a game in which Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer was ejected after bumping a referee. Surprised he hasn't been suspended. The Hawks' Kent Bazemore missed another game with a sprained ankle and isn't likely here. Boston beat the visiting Hawks 106-93 on Nov. 13 behind 23 points and 10 assists from Isaiah Thomas, who might start now that Smart is out.

Key trends: Boston is 7-3 ATS in the past 10 meetings. The under is 4-1 in the past five.

Early lean: Hawks and under.

Mavericks at Grizzlies (TBA)

Dallas had a six-game winning streak snapped in a 117-114 loss at Oklahoma City on Sunday as the Mavs blew a double-digit third-quarter lead. Center JaVale McGee made his season debut after signing with the Mavericks during the offseason. He finished with eight points in 11 minutes. Memphis had a four-game winning streak snapped in a 92-82 loss at San Antonio on Saturday. Grizzlies starting forward Zach Randolph was in uniform but did not play in his second straight game due to right knee soreness. He's questionable (why the TBA). Forward Jeff Green left the court early in the third quarter after bumping heads with teammate Tony Allen but was able to return.

Key trends: The road team is 5-1 ATS in the past six meetings. The over has hit in seven of the past nine.

Early lean: Wait on Randolph.

Clippers at Nuggets (TBA)

L.A. has appeared totally flat the past two games, dropping both by double digits, after that emotionally draining 124-117 loss against Golden State last Thursday. Neither Blake Griffin nor Chris Paul had a point in the first half of Sunday's 91-80 loss to Toronto. Denver lost at home to the Warriors by 13 on Sunday. Darrell Arthur had 21 points for the Nuggets, who have lost three straight. Kenneth Faried was sidelined with a sprained left ankle and Joffrey Lauvergne was out with a back injury. Don't expect either here. The Clippers won three of four against the Nuggets last season, going 1-1 in the Mile High City.

Key trends: The Clippers are 1-5 ATS in their past six at Denver. The under is 5-1 in those six.

Early lean: Clippers end their skid.

Bulls at Trail Blazers (+1.5, 202)

There's a very good chance that Derrick Rose will return after missing the past two games for Chicago due to a sprained left ankle. He was able to practice on Monday. If Rose does play, it would mark his first game playing in Portland since tearing the medial meniscus in his right knee on Nov. 22, 2013. The Bulls are likely again going to be without backup point guard Aaron Brooks, however. Portland won at the Lakers 107-93 on Sunday behind 30 points from Damian Lillard. It was the Blazers' franchise-record fifth straight road win in the series. Center Meyers Leonard missed his sixth straight game with a dislocated left shoulder. Portland and Chicago split the season series in 2014-15, with each team winning on its home floor. The Blazers have won seven straight at home in the series.

Key trends: Chicago is 5-2 ATS in its past seven after a loss. The Blazers are 0-6 ATS in their past six vs. the East.

Early lean: Bulls and over.

Lakers at Warriors (-17, 215)

This is your TNT nightcap and will also feature live betting. Golden State tied the NBA record with a 15th straight win to start a season on Sunday with a 118-105 win over Denver. Steph Curry had 19 points, his first under 20 this season. But he also got the fourth quarter off. If you are wondering, the longest overall winning streak to start a season in the four major sports is 20 straight by the 1884 St. Louis Maroons of baseball's Union Association. L.A. lost a third straight on Sunday against Portland. Don't tell Kobe Bryant that the Lakers can't win this game: "I've seen stranger things happen," he said. "We've been playing like s---. We might go up there and we might play like gangbusters up there. You never know." The Warriors have won five straight at home in the series.

Key trends: The Lakers are 3-7 ATS in the past 10 meetings. The over is 4-0 in the previous four.

Early lean: I'm always taking this many points. Go over.

Preview: Terriers (2-2) at Wildcats (4-0)

Date: November 24, 2015 9:00 PM EDT

Despite John Calipari's emphatic claims to the contrary, Kentucky is again the nation's No. 1 team.

The Wildcats' next goal appears to be convincing their coach that they deserve their new top ranking when they face Boston University on Tuesday night.

North Carolina's upset by Northern Iowa on Saturday vaulted Kentucky (4-0) atop the poll, the spot it held all of last season. The Wildcats certainly appeared deserving of the honor in a 74-63 win over then-No. 5 Duke on Nov. 17, though Calipari was less impressed after Friday's 78-63 victory over visiting Wright State.

Kentucky shot 53.2 percent and maintained a double-digit lead for much of the game, but Calipari focused instead on his team's 12 turnovers and 2-for-10 performance from 3-point range during his postgame news conference.

"You tell me that looked like the (then) No. 2 ranked team in the country," he said. "There's got to be 20 teams better than us right now."

Free-throw shooting, a problem area for Kentucky in previous years, also drew Calipari's ire. Tyler Ulis, Jamal Murray and Alex Poythress were a combined 24 of 26 but the rest of the roster was 2 of 11.

The Wildcats were able to overcome an 11-of-18 showing at the line against Duke behind an inspired defensive effort, intensity that Calipari believed was lacking against Wright State.

'We took a big step back," he said. "Guys didn't listen. We're doing certain things and they just kind of broke it off and did their own thing. In a league game, we lose."

Focus again could be an issue considering Boston University (2-2) hasn't beaten a ranked team since 1959 and lost by 24 in its visit to Rupp Arena last November. The Terriers were competitive for a good portion of that 89-65 defeat, though, trailing by nine with under 8 1-2 minutes left before Kentucky went on a 12-1 run to pull away.

Cedric Hankerson had 24 points to help keep the Terriers in it, but the junior guard is still recovering from a torn ACL sustained in the spring. Sixth man Eric Fanning also has yet to play this season due to a suspension for violating team rules.

Hankerson led BU with 15.9 points per game and Fanning was second at 12.3.

Returning starters Cheddi Mosely and John Papale have increased their production to help offset those absences. Papale has gone 19 of 37 on 3s and is averaging 17.8 points, while Mosely had 21 in Saturday's 78-66 victory at South Florida.

Ulis recorded a career-high 21 points and five assists against Wright State to follow up an 18-point, six-assist, turnover-free effort in the Duke game. The sophomore point guard has taken on a larger role on yet another freshman-laden team that's starting three highly touted first-year players in Murray (14.0 ppg), forward Skal Labissiere (13.8) and guard Isaiah Briscoe (12.7).

Kentucky and BU have had two common opponents as participants in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Classic. Both own wins over Albany and the Terriers lost 90-76 Thursday at NJIT, which was defeated 87-57 at Kentucky in the Nov. 14 opener.

Preview: Redbirds (2-2) at Terrapins (3-0)

Date: November 24, 2015 8:30 PM EDT

Maryland has enjoyed success in non-conference tournaments the last two seasons, and hopes that continues amid a relatively lackluster field of opponents in Cancun this week.

The second-ranked Terrapins will take on Illinois State in a Cancun Challenge quarterfinal Tuesday night, the schools' first meeting.

Maryland has moved up to No. 2 for the first time since March 4, 2002, but comes off a pair of close victories. The Terrapins (3-0) opened with an 80-56 victory against Mount St. Mary's before winning 75-71 against Georgetown and 65-58 against Rider.

They trailed by as many as 14 points in the second half against Rider.

"We learned a lot tonight and on Tuesday (vs. Georgetown)," coach Mark Turgeon told the school's official website. "We need to play better. It's on us to win these games. Rider was terrific tonight but we just need to get better, and it's my job to get them playing better."

Heralded freshman center Diamond Stone responded well to coming off the bench for the first time, scoring 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting with two blocked shots in 19 minutes. He was 5 for 13 from the field while starting the first two games.

"We don't win the game without him," Turgeon said. "He was terrific.

"He didn't ask to be ranked so high coming out of high school, he just was. That puts more pressure on the kid. He's a tough kid and he wants to be great. As a coach I just need to be patient with him and continue to make him better."

Stone and three other starters are all shooting 50.0 percent or better, while the fifth, Melo Trimble, leads the team with 16.3 points per game.

Maryland won its non-conference tournament each of the last two seasons, taking the CBE Classic in Kansas City in 2014 and the 2013 Paradise Jam in 2013. Trimble averaged 18.3 points and shot 55.2 percent from 3-point range in six neutral-court games last season.

The Terrapins will be an overwhelming favorite to win this tournament, too, as the only team in the field that reached the 2015 NCAA Tournament. The winner of this matchup will face either Rhode Island or TCU on Wednesday night.

The Redbirds (2-2) have started the season with inconsistent shooting, hitting 50.0 percent in their wins compared to 33.6 in losses. They shot 49.2 percent in Sunday's 72-56 win against Houston Baptist, and also excelled defensively, limiting the Huskies to 35.3 percent shooting while forcing 23 turnovers. Illinois State is forcing 18.8 per game, while Maryland has turned opponents over only 30 times in three contests.

DeVaughn Akoon-Purcell was 8 for 11 with 20 points and leads the team with 17.0 points per game.

Illinois State, which has never beaten a team ranked higher than fourth, also visits top-ranked Kentucky on Nov. 30.

Soccer: CL Best Bets - Tuesday
By Toby Maxtone-Smith

Matchday 5

The fifth Champions League matchday usually sees many of the favourites qualify and many of the outsiders see their dreams of a run in the knockout stages dashed.

Bayern Munich are currently the favourites for the competition at 5/2, but after their 4-0, Messi-less demolition of Real Madrid who would bet against Barcelona at 3/1?

Real Madrid are next at 5/1, with Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain both at 12/1. Then come Chelsea and Atletico Madrid at 20/1, Manchester United at 25/1, Juventus at an appealing 28/1 and Arsenal at 50/1. The rest are 66/1 or longer.

The Banker: Over 2.5 goals in BATE Borisov vs. Bayer Leverkusen at 8/11

Put simply, BATE Borisov, the Champions of Belarus, leak goals. They have conceded 11 in their four games so far, and their last ten games in this competition have yielded 41 goals. But they also score a surprising number, having hit three past AS Roma in Matchday 2. And their last two league games have both been wins, 4-1 against Slutsk and 5-0 over Granit Mikashevichy.

The same can more or less be said for Bayer Leverkusen. Their four games in the group so far have seen scorelines of 4-1, 2-1, 4-4 and 3-2. Both teams are in a three-way fight with Roma for the last qualification spot, and both need a win. All this makes 8/11 on over 2.5 goals being scored a very generous price.

The Solid Bet: Zenit St Petersburg to beat Valencia at 11/10

I had been sceptical of Zenit St Petersburg in this year’s competition, citing previous poor performances with a talented squad. However the Russian side have won four out of four in their group so far. They fully deserved their 3-2 win away to Valencia on Matchday 1 and they look a good bet at the prices to repeat that feat on Tuesday night. Their league form has been inconsistent, but they are the Russian league’s top scorers with 32 goals in 16 games.

Valencia, meanwhile, are two points off the Champions League places in La Liga and were very disappointing in a 1-1 home draw with Las Palmas last time out. Even though the game means more to them than Zenit, it would still take a brave man to fancy their chances on a freezing night in St Petersburg: it will be below freezing at kick-off.

The Outsider: FC Porto to draw with Dynamo Kiev at 14/5

Dynamo Kiev showed enough quality in their back-to-back games with Chelsea to suggest that 4/6 is too short a price for FC Porto in this crucial game. They drew 0-0 at home before losing thanks to a late Willian free-kick at Stamford Bridge. But with Porto three points ahead of Chelsea and five ahead of Dynamo, a point here would guarantee qualification for the home side.

This is far from the best Porto team of the last decade, so they are not as certain to swipe away other teams at home as they once were. A draw here looks the value bet.

The First Goalscorer: Willian for Chelsea at Maccabi Tel Aviv at 6/1

Maccabi Tel Aviv have scored just once in their four games in the Champions League so far - and that was a penalty when 3-0 down against Porto. So it is overwhelmingly likely that the first goalscorer in this game will be a Chelsea player. Chelsea may have looked at this game as a chance to rest some players when the fixtures came out, but circumstances mean that a win is needed here.

A strong team will go to Israel, and that will include the Blues’ best player this season: Willian. He has scored an incredible four free-kicks already this season and has been a rare bright spot in a poor Chelsea season. At 6/1 he is a good bet to score first.

Yonkers: Tuesday 11/24 Analysis
By Matt Rose

DRF HARNESS

MEET STATS: 368 - 1108 / $2,039.80 BEST BETS: 54 - 89 / $189.10

Best Bet: MUFFIN’S MAN (4th)

Spot Play: POOL HALL (6th)

Race 1

(3) BACK TO THE WEST has taken his last three with Bartlett driving, including last week in game fashion; why not again? (5) JC KINGDOM was a game uncovered winner last out upon dropping to this level. (1) HELLO HOT SHOT broke leaving in last; veteran can hang around for a share from this spot.

Race 2

(3) CHEYENNE CAM rallied well last week to just miss, his third straight narrow defeat. Gelding will get lucky eventually. (7) BETTOR DESIGN has been used aggressively in his three starts for his new barn. (4) OR always has the talent but is erratic.

Race 3

(1) I SCOOT SAM lands inside again and was Brennan's choice; veteran can trip out today. (6) DALLENBACH HANOVER faltered on the front end in his debut for Banca; he's better than that. (2) GREYSTONE CASH gets some post relief and seems capable with these.

Race 4

(1) MUFFIN'S MAN was a sharp winner last week in his debut for the Oakes barn and he draws best in a seemingly very easy spot. (4) POWDER KEG has flashed some speed in his last few. (2) JET PASSING broke saving ground last week; prior effort was okay.

Race 5

(3) FEELING CAM LUCKY moves in a couple of spots in his second start for Lachance and I suspect he'll take money and be live today. (5) BORIS blazed the way on the front end and quit last week; prior efforts were solid. (1) TRUE BLUE HALL finished well in his local debut and he can certainly build off that effort.

Race 6

(3) POOL HALL looked very sharp ripping out of the pocket last week to beat lesser; 3-year-old has been super since joining Team Stalbaum and he can take another despite the rise in class. (4) PAN STREET USA was game in defeat upon arrival but he loses Bartlett. (5) UNIX HANOVER could be more involved with the post relief.

Race 7

(4) KEYSTONE BODACIOUS raced pretty well at Pocono, his second start for new connections; he looks like he's got as good a shot as any in this wide-open affair and should be a decent price. (1) FROU FROU knows her way around this track, has speed and an inside draw. (5) CELEBRITY PEGASUS has been sharp for his new barn and he looks for three straight.

Race 8

(12) FLYHAWK EL DURADO has been a major disappointment this season but his last couple have been better since rejoining the Mark Ford barn and he's worth a look here. (7) CAPTURETHEMEMORY made a huge recovery last out and could jog here if she minds her manners. (9) PIG HUNT has raced well in her last two local starts at big odds.

Race 9

(9) NORTHERN OBSESSION seems to have the ability when she minds her manners; worth a try if the price is right. (1) PIERCEWAVE HANOVER hails from live connections and has plenty of speed but he hasn't been finishing his races recently. (4) STORMONT PARK did win two back, tries Carlson today and could be considered for minor awards.

Race 10

(5) MOLON LAVE had too far to come last week after getting lost early from the second tier; Stratton can have him forwardly placed today. (9) ROSE RUN QUICKLEY has just one lifetime win but he's raced well in Indiana and the gelding could fit nicely here. (1) GET TO DOIN IT is another midwest shipper who shows loads of fair-circuit wins.

Race 11

(2) ASHLAKE has put in some very good efforts and some very bad efforts; the ability seems there and perhaps the switch to Brennan will help her cause. (1) MOVEMENT was a sharp winner last week at Pocono for the Allard barn. (7) ALMAFI COAST clearly needed last week's start and he could be a closing threat.

Race 12

(8) PAPARAZZI HANOVER was a very good second last week to the streaking Hardts Or Bettor; Burke trainee can take this despite the poor draw. (2) SECRET THREAT has raced well since arriving and he gets post relief. (3) A BETTOR HAT returns locally off a win at Pocono but his last effort here he was shaken off rather easily.

-- NFL teams coming off a bye are 18-10 vs spread, 11-5 as an underdog.

-- Three of last 11 Maui Classic champs won national title that year.

-- Free agent catcher Chris Iannetta leaves the Angels to sign with Seattle.

-- Over last six weeks, NFL underdogs are 48-31-3 against the spread.

'History in the making'

Golden State (15-0 SU, 10-5 ATS) putting together another impressive performance Sunday, defeating Nuggets 118-105 have surpassed the `57-58 Boston Celtics for the best start by a defending champion and have tied the '48-49 Washington Capitols, '93-94 Houston Rockets for the best ever start to an NBA campaign. That all-time NBA best start will be broken when Warriors host Los Angeles Lakers (2-11, 4-9 ATS) at Oracle Arena in Oakland. Curry and company are an amazing 47-2 (30-18-1 ATS) with a 14.7 PPG winning margin its last 49 regular season games on home court.

Oddsmakers not giving Lakers much of a chance have coated Warriors with chalk making them -17.5 point home favorites. Dangerous betting territory even against lowly Lakers who cashed 2-of-3 as DD Dogs vs Golden State last year. Warriors are 2-2 ATS this season as double digit home faves including 0-2 ATS laying 16.0 or more points. Going back to last season Warriors are 3-6 ATS at home laying 15.0 or more points.

Boston U Terriers vs Kentucky Wildcats November 24, 9:00 EST

Kentucky lost a ton of talent last season to the draft yet they certainly appear reloaded with Murray (14.0), Labissiere (13.8), Briscoe (12.7) complimenting sophomore point guard Tyler Ulis (14.0). Cali's Cats dropping 79.2 PPG while allowing 62.0 per/contest are off to a 4-0 (2-2 ATS) start including a smack-down of Duke in the Champions Classic.

Terriers hail from the Patriot Conference and are 2-2 (0-0 ATS) on the campaign. Terriers netting 76.8 per/game are lead by John Papale (17.8) and three other double digit scores. Defensively, Terriers are a work in progress as they allow 76.8 on 43.6% shooting. The schools met last year with Wildcats prevailing 89-65 but did not cash as 31.5 point chalk. In this matchup, Wildcats are spotting Terriers 24.0 points.

Rhode Island

The Horned Frogs are accustomed to getting off to fast starts, going 19-6 under Trent Johnson in November. However, the high-scoring Horned Frogs look to bounce back from their first loss of the young season when they meet Rhode Island in the Cancun Challenge at Riviera Maya, Mexico, on Tuesday. The Horned Frogs had scored 90 points in their first two games (both wins) but were held to 67 last time out in a loss to undefeated South Dakota State, ending a run of 20 straight wins against non-conference foes. Rhode Island is also 2-1 after crushing Cleveland State 73-45 on Saturday (shot 63.4 percent from the floor ) but is still reeling from the loss of its top player, 6-5 guard E.C. Matthews (16.9-4.6 last year & a preseason first-team choice in the Atlantic 10), who suffered a season-ending knee injury in the Rams' opener.

Head coach Dan Hurley said he's trying to remake his team into a more defensive-minded unit after the loss of its best player and it responded by holding Cleveland State to 27.3 shooting. "We've got to move forward and our expectations have got to be the same that they were coming into the season," Hurley said. Rhode Island starts three guards, Terrell (13.0-4.3), McGlynn (11.3) and Garrett (10.7) along with the 6-7 Martin (12.0-5.3) and the 6-9 Iverson (10.0-5.3). Watson, a 6-7 undersized center, averages 4.7 & 4.3 off the bench.

The Horned Frogs rallied from a 22-point deficit but could get no closer than six in their 76-67 home loss to the Jackrabbits. Junior college transfer, the 6-10 Vladimir Brodziansky, is off to a good start at TCU, leading the team at 14.3 points and 7.3 rebounds a game. TCU has a much bigger frontcourt than Rhode Island, as the 6-8 Abron (10.3-6.0) and 6-10 Shepherd (10.0-6.7) join Brodziansky (note: Abron is TCU’s lone senior and he scored a career-high 19 points against Houston Baptist earlier in the season).

I would have ‘loved’ Rhode Island in this matchup with Matthews on board but I’ll still make a small play on the Rams.
