Preview: Kentucky Wildcats (17-2) at Tennessee Volunteers (10-9)

Date: January 24, 2017 9:00 PM EDT

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- A big question looms as No. 4 Kentucky puts its unbeaten league record on the line Tuesday night at rival Tennessee. Will point guard De'Aaron Fox be able to play?

Fox, who ranks first in assists and second in scoring for the Wildcats, missed most of Saturday's win over South Carolina with an ankle injury. He was in a boot Saturday, but entered the practice facility with both ankles taped.

"He's day-to-day. Waiting to hear. That's all I got on it," said assistant coach Kenny Payne, filling in for John Calipari on Monday.

Fox's absence was clear on Saturday.

"I think you saw a little bit of the adjustment we had to make," Payne said. "We went through a spell where without him we were a little confused, discombobulated. But we got it together, which is a great sign of a good team, that without any missing piece we win games."

Tennessee coach Rick Barnes echoed Payne's sentiments.

"Fox is fast, he's quick, he's long. There's not much he can't do," Barnes said Monday. "But with or without him, their program is built on the attitude that if one guy goes down another guy is going to step in and we're going to keep rolling."

Kentucky (17-2, 7-0 SEC) steadied the ship when Payne suggested to Calipari on Saturday that senior reserve Dominique Hawkins play point guard and Isaiah Briscoe remain in one of the shooting guard slots.

"He doesn't turn the ball over," Payne said of Hawkins. "Give it to somebody that doesn't turn it over. It stabilizes us. He's been really, really steady, and the most important thing that he does for this team is he puts pressure on the ball and that's where we need him the most. He's been good for us."

Kentucky enters Tuesday's game averaging 92.9 points per game, third-best in the nation.

"You can see clips of them scoring within three seconds from a variety of different ways," Barnes said. "From a turnover, from a made basket, down the floor in three seconds and a lot of time they're at the rim."

Wildcats freshman guard Malik Monk paces the scoring with an SEC-best 21.7 points per game. Next comes Fox at 16.2, sophomore guard Briscoe at 14.3 and sophomore Bam Adebayo at 13.1 to go with 6.9 rebounds.

"Being the leading scorer in the league tells you he can go get a bunch," Barnes said of Monk. "So we'll do everything we can to make it tough. But they are so good that if you focus on one guy, they can hurt you in a lot of other areas. They are where they are because they're an outstanding team. they are not a one- or two-man team."

Tennessee (10-9, 3-4) is led by senior guard Robert Hobbs at 14.7 points per game. Next comes freshman forward Grant Williams at 10.8 and freshman guard Lamonte Turner at 9.6.

"Tennessee can beat us," Payne said. "Regardless of what their record is, we're playing them at Tennessee, they're going to be hungry and aggressive against us. We've gotta go out and play well to beat them. They're a tough, scrappy team and we've got to defend and rebound and play Kentucky basketball and be efficient."

Common opponents would suggest Kentucky fans are in store for an interesting game -- UK is 6-0 while the Volunteers are 3-3. The strangest comparisons are that the Wildcats won at Ole Miss by 23 points while Tennessee lost in Oxford by 11, a 34-point swing. But the Volunteers whipped Mississippi State by 17 while UK topped the Bulldogs by only seven. Tennessee also won at Vanderbilt by 12 whereas UK only won by six points.

There is one other concern for Kentucky. The Wildcats have a marquee showdown looming on Saturday when No. 2 Kansas visits No. 4 Kentucky. Any chance of a letdown?

"Not with us" Payne said. "Every time we step on the floor, you can see it. They're coming with their best game. Whether it was Mississippi State, whether it's Tennessee, we can't afford to look ahead to anybody. We know that we can be beat by anybody."

NCAA Basketball Expert Predictions: Three Interesting Jan. 24 Opening Lines
by Alan Matthews

On Saturday's Opening Line Report story, I looked at the status of Arizona sophomore guard Allonzo Trier and how much better the already-good Wildcats could be if/when he returned from a PED suspension. I'd like to tell you that I had some inside knowledge that Trier was going to return on Saturday, but that would be a lie. Yet there he was, and what a difference it made. The Wildcats dominated No. 3 UCLA in the Bruins' gym, 96-85, for their 12th straight victory. The former touted recruit finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists. I absolutely believe Arizona is good enough now to give the Pac-12 its first men's basketball national champion 1997 when Arizona won it. The Cats have are now down to +1400 to cut down the nets.

No. 2 Kansas at No. 18 West Virginia ( -3 )

Game of the night is from the Big 12 at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN. Could Kansas be caught looking ahead a bit to a mega-showdown with Kentucky this Saturday? Probably not since WVU already clobbered former No. 1 Baylor in Morgantown a couple of weeks ago. Kansas is No. 1 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. KU won its 18th straight game -- second-longest streak in the nation behind Gonzaga and tied for the second longest under Bill Self -- on Saturday, 79-67 over visiting Texas. It was Kansas' 50th straight win at Allen Fieldhouse. Big 12 Player of the Year leading candidate Frank Mason III had 17 points and seven assists. Mason III eclipsed the 1,500 career-point mark as he's now 20th in school history with 1,514 points. The Jayhawks had a season-high 14 steals, 10 in the first half.

West Virginia had it rough last week, being upset 89-87 in OT at home against Oklahoma and then losing 79-75 at Kansas State on Saturday to drop from No. 7 in the AP Top 25. WVU led the Wildcats by 12 in the second half. The Mountaineers, who usually force a ton of turnovers, gave it away a season-high 23 times. Kansas State shot 54 percent in the second half, had a 25-15 advantage in points off turnovers and outscored the Mountaineers, 40-28, in the paint. Two WVU players fouled out as it was whistled for 30 fouls compared to KSU's 19. Kansas is 6-3 all-time against West Virginia, but the Mountaineers have won the past three at home in the series.

Key trends: The Jayhawks are 2-5 against the spread in their past seven vs. the Big 12. WVU is 9-2 ATS in its past 11 at home vs. teams with a winning road record. The home team is 8-1 ATS in the past nine meetings.

I'm leaning: Kansas is getting points? Huh. Take the Jayhawks.

Toledo at Ohio (-6.5)

Mid-American Conference game at 7 p.m. ET. Last week, news came down that Ohio's best player, forward Antonio Campbell, will miss the rest of the season with a broken foot. He's the reigning MAC Player of the Year and ends his career in the Top 10 in program history in rebounds, blocks and shooting percentage. This year, he was averaging 16.4 points, 8.9 rebounds and 1.1 blocks. Ohio was clocked at Akron in its first game without Campbell but bounced back Saturday to win 78-69 at Northern Illinois. The Huskies led 59-57 with about six minutes left before Ohio went on a 19-5 run.

Toledo has dropped three of four following an 85-61 defeat at Kent State on Saturday. KSU broke open a close game with a 13-2 run in the latter stages of the first half. The Golden Flashes shot 57.6 percent from the field and limited the Rockets to a 36.7 shooting mark, including a season-low 29.2 percent in the first half. Senior forward Steve Taylor Jr. paced Toledo with 16 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Jonathan Williams entered ranking second in the MAC in scoring at 21.0 ppg but was held to 15 on 3-for-12 shooting. Ohio U beat visiting Toledo 81-79 in the lone meeting last season. Campbell had a big late steal. Williams missed a 3-pointer with two seconds left.

Key trends: The Rockets are 0-5 ATS in their past five road games. The Bobcats are 1-6-1 ATS in their past eight following an ATS win. Toledo is 8-2 ATS in the past 10 meetings.

I'm leaning: Ohio.

No. 4 Kentucky at Tennessee (TBA)

SEC game at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN. I didn't really want to preview another Kentucky game because I'll be surely looking at the Cats for Saturday's great one against Kansas, but there's a potentially important injury to be aware of here and that's to UK star freshman De'Aaron Fox. In Saturday's 85-69 win over No. 24 South Carolina, Fox suffered a right ankle injury in the first half and wasn't able to return. He was seen with crutches and a walking boot later on. Fox is averaging 16.2 points, 6.0 assists and 4.8 rebounds and is a projected 2017 lottery pick. I would be a tad surprised if he plays here. Fellow freshman Malik Monk had 27 points to lead the way vs. USC. It was his fifth 25-point game, tied for second-most by a Kentucky freshman under eighth-year coach John Calipari. Jamal Murray had six last year.

The Vols are off a 91-74 home win over Mississippi State on Saturday. Robert Hubbs III scored 19 points to lead four Vols in double figures. Tennessee had just seven turnovers and dominated the glass with a 49-35 advantage. The rebounds were a season has as was the plus-14 margin. UT's 91 points in the marked its most in SEC play this season and the most MSU has surrendered this year. Kentucky is the sixth ranked opponent that UT has faced in 2016-17. The Vols are 0-5 but nearly won a couple of those. Of Tennessee's 68 wins -- which are the most against the Wildcats of any team -- 22 have come against a ranked UK squad. An unranked UT team has 18 wins against a ranked Kentucky team.

Key trends: UK is 9-3 ATS in its past 12 SEC games. The Vols are 1-5 ATS in their past six on Tuesday. The underdog is 5-1 ATS in the past six meetings.

I'm leaning: Vols are going to get a fair amount of points here, and I like them a lot if Fox does sit.

Yonkers: Tuesday 1/24 Analysis
By Brewster Smith

DRF

MEET STATS: 9 - 51 / 58.20

BEST BETS: 1 - 5 / $2.80

Best Bet: BEST TURBO (2nd)

Spot Play: MAJESTIC MISTRESS (3rd)

Race 1

(2) SUMMER SNOW Pacing mare is knocking at the door based on her last two trips to the post; ready. (3) CAVIART CATERINA put in a mild rally for show money recently; main danger. (8) QUICK AINT FAIR was an even second last time out and should have a say against these despite the move to the 8-hole.

Race 2

(1) BEST TURBO rallied strongly for the placing last time around. Trotting mare is very capable of getting the job done over this group. (7) OOH RAH lost all chance when this gelding broke at the start as the heavy favorite; can atone. (2) OMG HANOVER could make some noise if he gets a favorable trip.

Race 3

(6) MAJESTIC MISTRESS did not fire his best last time out but this gelding appears to be in good form to grab his second score in 2017. (1) PERFECT ROAD is very consistent and was sharp at the Meadowlands; big threat. (2) LE TISSIER very game in his last two starts and could have a say in the outcome.

Race 4

(1) BETTORSLUCKYSTREAK retains the rail position and it's good to see Brennan back at the helm; dangerous for win honors. (4) FORT KNOX has wheeled off two straight victories and now gets the services of Bartlett; beware. (3) SIR ZIGGYS Z TAM was sent down the road in his last try for all the glory; watch out again.

Race 5

(1) YOLO LINDY Sharp trotting mare has hit the board in her last three starts and is good enough to be the boss over this group. (2) GO MARY GO put in a mild rally for the fourth spot last time around; could contend with these. (7) METATRON was sitting a 3-hole trip but broke at the 3/4 pole last out. Gets weaker foes tonight so he figures to not be out of this.

Race 6

(6) SWEETNSINFUL was very sharp in victory last time out and now she moves up in class, but her form is strong enough to take these to task for her second straight score. (3) HARMONY OAKS QUIKE just got up for the show spot last time around and maybe she can move forward from the 3-hole. (8) NEW YORK KITTY should show speed against these despite the leaving from door number eight; capable.

Race 7

(2) DYNAMIC EDGE Clearly this gelding is knocking at the door. Draws a cozy post to work with and with the right trip he could greet the cameraman for pictures. (6) EMERALD CHIP Easy down the road victory at Freehold recently; big threat. (3) INUKCHUK CHUCK gets post relief and that might help his cause; maybe.

Race 8

(3) ONTHEROAD DE VIE came outside and mowed them down for the victory last out. Trotter moves up a bit however he seems to be heading in the right direction; not out of the question for the repeat. (1) DEWDLE ALL DAY rallied well to nail down the placing last week; dangerous from the fence. (2) ZAGSTER has put in three good efforts in a row and must be considered in all the exotic slots.

Race 9

(6) SHADY MCCOY was late on the scene to just get up for the victory in his Meadowlands finale. Makes his return to the half-mile oval and Bartlett signs on; big threat for two straight. (4) ALVAREZ Easy victory in her last one and now she moves up in class; player. (7) IRON got the job done wire to window last out and most likely be on the engine again.

Race 10

(2) IN RUNAWAY BAY N seemed to be completely out of it turning for home but with a big turn of foot he zoomed on by them all last out for win honors. With a repeat effort the rest will have to settle for minor awards. (5) CLASSIC AMERICAN N showed good speed from the 8-hole last out, was on the lead in deep stretch but could not hold off the top two; big threat. (1) PONDEROSITO gets serious post relief and could be a player in here if he reverts to his 1/10 second place finish; we shall see.

Tuesday’s six-pack

Six facts about dolphins…….

— A group of dolphins is called a pod.

— The dolphin is the only mammal that gives birth with the tail first instead of the head.

— A dolphin may be able to dive up to 1,000 feet

— The average lifespan of a dolphin is 17 years. However, some of them that have been observed in the wild lived about 50 years.

— A dolphin needs to get air at different intervals. Some need air every 20 seconds but others only need it every 30 minutes.

— There are about 100 teeth in the mouth of a dolphin. They use the teeth to grab their prey but they don’t chew it. All food is swallowed whole.
