I don't believe to premise of the arguments in the OP is correct.
There is a lot of anti-Bush sentiment in this election, it's not all about either candidate.
Though a lot of Republicans are not crazy about McCain, they still prefer McCain over Obama.
The Republican base is a much more reliable and consistent voting block, they tend to show up on election day.
Obama may be de-motivating his extreme left wing block that won him the nomination. At a minimum, his recent policy changes have watered down any difference between the two candidates, potentially meaning the kids stay home again.
There is still a large block of Americans, especially in the over 60 crowd, that will not vote for an African American.
McCain will hold serve in the South
