Of course the number of infections in the US will surpass all others - we have about 7x the population of Spain and 5.5x the population of Italy. Not sure of Spain testing procedures, but the US was not up to par in the testing department, so of course there is going to be a spike in cases once you test people. FYI, Spain's numbers are also growing day by day, with yesterday being the highest day of new infections. Italy trending downward over last few days.
The US is like 50 separate countries almost, especially since the states are making these decisions to shutter or not. To say it was huge mistake to shut down everything is tough to judge. NY needs to be shut down based on the fact that 50% of cases in US are there, and when you talk NY, that also means NJ, CT, PA due to proximity. I would say the same with CA and WA - they need lockdown. And when I say lockdown, I mean for longer than from now until Easter. However, should Florida be shut down? It looks very different here than it does in other places - my county has 4 confirmed cases. 4. And we are not locked down other than restaurant/bars/public beaches. Miami Dade is a different story though.
The death rate here is 1 per 400K of population, which is almost the same as China, South Korea and Germany. Is this overblown? It is serious, more serious than the flu. NY is not overblown. They have a real problem. But we aren't Spain or Italy. I don't think we will get that bad overall.
