Good riddance. When they opened Charles town to tables games and made it a full casino it was pathetic how they treated their customers. They kept the limits at $50 mins and you couldn't receive a comp to save your life. They knew they had a monopoly on the DC/VA/MD market and took full advantage. The stock price of Penn National doubled in the 6 months after Charles town was opened. It was disgusting how much money they were making that first year. In the poker room they would only spread 1/2 NL and 2/5 NL. The poker room manager was an asshole and wouldnt even attempt to get other games going. Took the easy way out and spread only two levels of NL.
Fast forward to now. MD has legalized gambling and has crushed Charles town. I was in C-town a couple weeks ago and now the high limit area was offering $50 limits for BJ. The poker room only has about 10 tables running daily. The poker room at MD Live is getting 50 tables going on a weekend and quite a mix of games and limits. My how the mighty have fallen.
All of the WV/MD/PA casinos are taxed at ridiculous rates (compared to Vegas & AC) --- but I think WV is slightly more than MD, which partially explains the poor comps @ Charles Town.
That being said, I think you're right......knowing that Maryland competition was on the way in 2-3 years, Penn basically had two choices with Charles Town:
1) Provide reasonable comps & service, try to build a loyal customer-base
2) Approach the Maryland situation as a lost cause, and try to squeeze every dollar
Clearly, Penn went with the 2nd option. Can't say I disagree with them though --- most people will play at the nearest casino (Baltimore, National Harbor), regardless of past/current comps. Not like somebody is going to drive an extra 30 minutes, just because they got a free sandwich in 2013.
What's really going to hurt Charles Town --- not only the number of MD/VA/DC customers they're going to lose, but the *quality* of customers. They're going to lose the $120k Federal Govt manager from DC suburbs......and they're going to keep the $43k asphalt guy from Martinsburg, WV.
