I do think crudebar has a point .
I don’t believe debates move the needle very much one way or the other when it comes to elections .

They are kinda overrated .

I think primary debates are important for the party running against the incumbent .

But the presidential debates don’t do much

simply isn't true

the JFK/Nixon debates decided that election and because of that nobody held a debate for nearly 20 years

in 76 Ford was ahead of Carter until he threatened USSR which freaked people out to voting Carter. Carter had a big lead over Reagan and Carter, who tried to not debate because of Reagan's experience in front of a camera, got destroyed and lost by a ton after having a pre-debate lead.

Bush Sr tried to pull a Carter in 92 and not debate Clinton/Perot because he knew Willy was pretty slick in front of a camera. The debate crushed Bush who was seen freaking checking his watch to see when he could get the hell out of there. He even admitted "I took a huge hit debating" years later on a documentary.

Bush Jr was a decent debater because of humor which he used to take apart a monotone boring Al Gore who's mic caught him sighing over and over.

Obviously Obama is a strong debater...able to eloquently say absolutely nothing but making you walk away impressed with his poised. and Mccain's a moron who wears poorly fitting suits with a fucked up arm and looks terrible on tv

Put Biden in front of a camera 3 times for 2 hours each and he will crumble

Trump is not the worst candidate to run for President - he is the most unique - we've never had anyone remotely close to him - the worst candidate to ever make it as a nominee is Biden or Kerry - Biden is nearly 80 and looks every bit of it and mentally he's definitely 80

You came up with 3 examples in 50 years and none of those were during the internet era .

Those were during the days when they had 3 tv channels and everyone got their news from fish wrap .

At the very least debates are overrated if not completely irrelevant .

By now every American who gives a shit has probably watched 15 YouTube videos of Biden gaffes .

Its not like it will be a new revelation to the average voter if he makes a fool of himself in the debates.

3 examples?

60, 76, 80, 92, 00, 08 and there were no debates in 64 - 68 - 72 so they've mattered in all but the re-elections of Clinton, Reagan, and Obama over the past 60 years. so 6x they played a big part, 3x they played no part

obviously you needed me to dumb this down for you (as usual)

If you honestly think debates had an effect on the 00, and 08 elections there is nothing I can do for you.

Just agree to disagree I guess

And again all the other examples you listed besides those 2 were pre internet era so go ahead and have a ball saying all those effected the results . Knock your socks off

You have me convinced. Trump will rise fast after his debates.

Just don't bet on it.

Maybe you watched a different debate. Trump kicked corrupt Hilarys ass. She was exposed

Exactly as i would expect from a trump supporter. A Trump person see's it their way and a Clinton person see's it their way. Everything gets spun and no one ever really loses in these debates any longer.

I have a different perspective as why people got elected.

JFK won because Nixon sweated profusely during the debate giving the impression
that he was afraid of Kennedy but more importantly JFK won because his daddy made
a deal with the devil.

Carter lost the 2nd time because he was a lousy president.

Bush Sr. lost the 2nd time because he reneged on his promise... Read my lips...

If Biden has any hope of becoming president and I'm being courteous here, he
cannot debate Trump. If he does he will come off as a moron.

Remember when this stuff was a big deal? I remember when H.W. looked at his watch during the debate and that was all the noise afterwards. Wouldn't even register in the current climate.

true that there's nothing you can ever do for me

2000 gore led bush 51-41 in september before the first debate in october. after 2nd debate that same poller was 46-46 and bush won the election. yeah, definitely no causality just coincidence

No debates.

Debates only help the challenger to the incumbent. Why would Slow Joe debate in his condition?

The Dems will demand virtual debates with corona as a lame excuse so his handlers can feed Slow Joe answers off screen.

Trump will refuse.

Slow Joe is deteriorating so rapidly I can't even imagine what he'll sound like 3 months from now.

Anyway, Trump doesn't need the debates, but he does need to start taunting "Hidin' Biden" out of his bunker in front of a microphone every single day.

Agreed.

Sorry. That is exactly what i was trying to get across. That's why in this day in age nobody truly loses a debate.

Also, my opinions are just on betting purposes. With that said, i love Biden in this position. He is polling at almost Bill Clinton vs Bob Dole numbers and is well less than a 1 to 2 fav.

Hard to say. You would have to ask each voter why they voted for their candidate..

I don't put a lot of stock in debates. For the most part they're boring.

Having said that every so often a one liner seals the deal.

Witness Reagan vs Mondale in 84.

When asked about his age Reagan responded, “I will not make age an issue of this campaign.
I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth and inexperience.”

And as they say the rest was history.
