The way jocks throw a race is rather easy to spot. The problem is finding out about this before the race starts. All jockeys are, or were involved one time in their career. I remember going to Santa Anita for John Longden's last ride. It was in the 1966 San Juan Capistrano Handicap. The jockey's made sure that he won. The odds dropped from the 40/1 openers to 6/1. It was not the best kept secret. Earlier in the day, Longden won the 4th race, when it was obvious that Bill Hartack hand rode his horse instead of using the whip in a head bobber with Longden's horse. To this day, everyone who saw that race say that Hartack let Longden win.
The way you described Hartack's and Longden's way of doing business is probablly one of the many tricks the jockey's use in these "jockey" races. But the big drop in odds is definitely a tell, however the system lays out some parameters to follow when looking for an overlay. I never knew that Lafite Pincay and Johnny Velasquez were cousins until I saw them work a field of horses together. Vellasquez trailed behind Pincay's horse at the rail coming into the home stretch with Vellasquez's horse neatly tucked in behind him on the rail. In the last 300 - 400 yards before the finish, Plncays horse as was predictable, started running out of gas and his Pincay let the horse drift out wide across the track as they bared down on the finish line. Every other horse in the field had to pull up to avoid a collision with Pincay's horse as he was drifting wide across the track which gave a clear path to Johnny Vellasauez to run right up the rail and take the race. I knew that the guy giving me the information was hooked up to the right people and trusted him with $500 for the information. It was a thing of beauty to watch. I'll never forget what my contact man told me after the race. He was bitching about how the Mexicans charged him a ton of money to let him in on the fix. That was of course not a system play, but it sure opened my eyes up about what goes on behind the scenes in these races.
