NOFOLK, Va. - The Kent State University men’s basketball team plays in its first exempt tournament since 2001 when it opens the Corpus Christi Caller-Times Challenge at Old Dominion University, Monday, Nov. 22, at 7 p.m. The tournament features the Golden Flashes and Monarchs, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Florida State, Shawnee State and Texas Christian.
The Corpus Christi Challenge will feature three experimental rules, including a 20’6” three-point line, and a 1-1/2-foot wider lane.

Kent State’s two leading scorers are both newcomers to the squad this season. Jay Youngblood, a junior college transfer, leads the team at 15.0 points per game, while Kevin Warzynski, who sat out last season after transferring from Charleston Southern, is averaging 14.5 points per contest.
Flash Facts
Kent State’s last exempt tournament was the 2001 University Hoops Classic, where KSU went 2-1, defeating UC-Irvine (75-64) and Robert Morris (83-55), but losing to Hofstra (67-64).
The Golden Flashes have posted a 54-21 (.720) record in non-conference contests during the last six seasons.
<LI>KSU has not opened the year with three straight road games since 1994, when it played at the Carrier Classic in Syracuse then at Northern Illinois before coming home.
A Look at Old Dominion
The Old Dominion University Monarchs opened the 2004-05 season with a 63-55 victory against South Alabama Saturday. Old Dominion was led by a game-high 19 points and 12 rebounds from Valdas Vasylius, who connected on 5-of-6 field goals and 9-of-13 free throw attempts. Alex Loughton chipped in with 11 points.
The Monarchs return four starters and eight letterwinners from a team that went 17-11 and finished fourth in the Colonial Athletic Conference a year ago.
Old Dominion is coached by Blaine Taylor (Montana ’81) who owns a 43-43(.500) record in his fourth season at Old Dominion and a 185-108 (.631) mark in his 10th year overall.

Monday’s meeting will be the first ever on the hardwood between Kent State and Old Dominion. The Golden Flashes are 2-3 all-time against teams currently competing in the Colonial Athletic Association, with the most recent game against a CAA member a 67-64 loss against Hofstra in 2001
