Indians pick up RHP Guerra
The Sports Xchange

The Cleveland Indians claimed right-hander Deolis Guerra off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates and designated left-hander Michael Roth for assignment on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old Guerra was 2-0 with a 6.48 ERA in 10 relief outings for the Pirates this year as a rookie before he was designated for assignment on July 31 after Pittsburgh acquired right-hander Joakim Soria.

Guerra, originally signed by the New York Mets in 2005 as a non-drafted free agent, began the season with Indianapolis and posted a 2-1 record with a 1.23 ERA and four saves in 25 appearances before his contract was purchased by the Pirates on June 26. He held opposing batters with a .165 average and had nine walks and 37 strikeouts in Triple-A.

Roth was 7-6 with a 4.15 ERA in 20 games, including 19 starts, for Triple-A Columbus.

Cubs place RHP Soriano on DL
The Sports Xchange

The Chicago Cubs placed right-hander Rafael Soriano, who has an inflamed shoulder, on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday.

To replace him on the roster, the Cubs re-signed left-hander Clayton Richard, who had been designated for assignment Monday.

Soriano, 35, signed a one-year, $4 million deal with the Cubs in early June and had gone 2-0 with a 6.35 ERA, giving up four runs in 5 2/3 innings over six games.

Richard is 2-0 with a 4.29 ERA in four games for the Cubs, including three starts.

Jays' Sanchez drops appeal of suspension
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Aaron Sanchez abandoned an appeal of a suspension for throwing at a Kansas City Royals player during a game on Sunday.

Sanchez had received a three-game suspension from Major League Baseball after he was ejected for directing a pitch at Kansas City's Alcides Escobar in the eighth inning.

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons was suspended for one game after returning to the field following his ejection during Sunday's game and sat out Tuesday night.

Sanchez began serving his suspension during Wednesday night's game against the Minnesota Twins and is eligible to return for Saturday's game against the New York Yankees. He pitched Tuesday night and was likely to be rested Wednesday and Thursday, Gibbons said.

Home-plate umpire Jim Wolf had warned both teams after Kansas City starter Edinson Volquez hit Toronto's Josh Donaldson on the left shoulder with a pitch in the first inning.

Sanchez moved to the bullpen after beginning the season as a starter and has a 6-4 record with a 3.39 ERA.

'Under-Alert'

Going back to the well is something that those in baseball betting have no problem doing, especially when it continues to offer up winning plays. In this case, the play is an 'Under' involving the Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies. 'Under' gamblers have hit pay dirt the past thirteen L.A. games when Zack Greinke gets the call. During those thirteen starts the righthander has allowed an average 1.07 runs/game with a 84-14 strikeout-to-walk ratio posting 10 'Under', 3 'Over'. Another positive for 'Under' gamblers, the 'Under' has been the correct betting option in 7 of Greinke's last 10 August starts and in 13 of Dodgers' 16 road games during daylight hours.

Minnesota at Toronto August 6, 7:05 EST

The Toronto Blue Jays will start Mark Buehrle when they conclude the series vs Minnesota, which does not spell good things for Twins. In two appearances since joining Toronto, Buehrle has posted a 2-0 record vs Twins allowing 4 runs over 16 innings, stiking out 8 batters with no walks. Going back to his days with White Sox, Buehrle heads to the hill having posted 5 straight W's vs Minnesota with a 23-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Oddsmakers currently have Jays -$1.80 home chalk.

Five To Follow MLB Betting: Thursday, August 6, 2015 Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews

Pretty shocking news out of Detroit on Tuesday as the team parted ways with very successful GM/team president Dave Dombrowski. Assuming Dombrowski's post will be longtime assistant GM Al Avila, who is the father of Tigers catcher Alex Avila. I don't know what's going on behind the scenes here because Dombrowski is one of the five best, maybe better, GMs in the game. The Tigers advanced to the playoffs in six of Dombrowski's 14 years. They advanced to the World Series twice -- in 2006 and 2012 -- losing both times. Detroit was eliminated in the ALCS in 2011 and 2013 and has won four consecutive AL Central championships. However, that run is coming to an end this year, and Dombrowski traded two of the team's best players, David Price and Yoenis Cepedes, at the deadline. Maybe 86-year-old owner Mike Ilitch wasn't on board with Dombrowski's plan to "reboot" the franchise and wants to keep pushing for a World Series title before he dies. Dombrowski will get another job without question.

Cardinals at Reds (+138, 8)

Earliest start of the day (12:35 p.m. ET) and after a night game, so you may see a regular or two on each side get the game off with both traveling out after. Michael Wacha (12-4, 3.09) goes for the Cardinals. He had been scuffling a bit but was strong last time out in shutting out Colorado on four hits over seven innings. He is 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA in two starts this season against Cincinnati. Todd Frazier is 5-for-19 with a homer off him. Joey Votto is 6-for-15 with two doubles and a homer. Jay Bruce might take the day off. He's 0-for-18 with nine strikeouts. Cincinnati's Michael Lorenzen (3-6, 4.80) was not good in July with an 8.61 ERA. He has never faced the Cardinals.

Key trends: The Cardinals are 7-0 in Wacha's past seven vs. the NL Central. The Reds are 0-5 in Lorenzen's past five on five days of rest. The "over/under" has gone over in five of Wacha's past seven on the road. The over is 4-1 in Wacha's past five vs. the Reds.

Early lean: Cardinals and under.

Dodgers at Phillies (+220, 7.5)

Los Angeles shortstop Jimmy Rollins concludes his homecoming to the City of Brotherly Love, and he's certainly one of the great Phillies of all time. This is another day game (1:05 p.m. ET) after a night game, so monitor those starting lineups. The Phillies might just throw in the towel on MLB ERA leader Zack Greinke (10-2, 1.41). He actually has just been mortal in his past two starts, allowing two earned in each after going six straight allowing zero. He shut out the Phillies over eight innings on one hit on July 9. Ryan Howard is 3-for-12 with two RBIs off him. Domonic Brown is 1-for-12. Philly's David Buchanan (2-5, 6.44) hasn't faced the Dodgers this season. He has allowed three runs in each of his past two starts, both wins.

Key trends: The Dodgers are 9-1 in Greinke's past 10 on five days of rest. The Phillies are 0-4 in Buchanan's past four vs. teams with a winning record. The under is 5-0 in Greinke's past five on the road. The over is 4-0 in Buchanan's past four on Thursday.

Early lean: Dodgers on runline and under.

Red Sox at Yankees (-156, 9)

Yes, another Boston-New York game is nationally televised and will have live betting as this one is shown on the MLB Network. It's lefty CC Sabathia (4-8, 5.54) for the Bombers. He wasn't very good last time out in Texas, allowing five runs and nine hits over five innings in a loss. And after he was dealing with dehydration and had to be hospitalized. But he's fine now and good to go. He has faced Boston once this season, allowing two runs in six innings on May 1. David Ortiz is a career .239 hitter off him with two homers in 67 at-bats. Mike Napoli is hitting .263 with two homers in 38 at-bats. Rookie lefty Eduardo Rodriguez (6-3, 4.34) goes for Boston. His lone start against New York was on July 11 and he allowed two runs over 6.1 innings.

Key trends: Boston is 3-8 in its past 11 vs. a lefty. The Yanks have won five straight at home vs. lefties. The over is 9-3 in Sabathia's past 12 overall. New York is 2-5 in Sabathia's past seven vs. Boston.

Early lean: Yankees and over.

Twins at Blue Jays (-180, 8.5)

Toronto could be going for the four-game sweep here depending on what happens on Wednesday. Troy Tulowitzki has been raking since being acquired from Houston, and the Jays have taken one of the two AL wild-card spots from the Twins. I think you can stick a fork in Minnesota. The Jays go with lefty Mark Buehrle (11-5, 3.32) here. He has held opponents to three earned runs or fewer in 11 straight starts. He won in Minnesota on May 29, throwing a complete game and allowing four runs. Joe Mauer hits just .206 off him in 63 at-bats. The Twins' Kyle Gibson (8-8, 3.37) bounced back from two rough starts by allowing two runs over seven innings vs. the Mariners last time out. Gibson allowed one earned over 5.2 innings vs. Toronto on May 30. Tulowitzki has never faced him.

Key trends: Minnesota has lost six straight Gibson starts vs. teams with a winning record. The Twins also have lost six straight road games vs. lefties. Toronto is 5-2 in Buehrle's past seven on Thursday. The over is 5-2 in Gibson's past seven vs. the AL East. The over is 12-5 in Buehrle's past 17 at home.

Early lean: Blue Jays and over.

Giants at Cubs (-118, TBA)

Potentially important series for wild-card implications begins at Wrigley Field -- the Cubs' most important home series in years. Jason Hammel (6-5, 3.13) gets the call for Chicago. Hammel got his first win since June 6 last time out, holding the Brewers to one run and six hits over 5.2 innings. He hasn't faced San Francisco this season. Hunter Pence is 5-for-17 with a homer and five RBIs off him. Buster Posey is 2-for-11 with an RBI. Giants rookie Chris Heston (11-5, 3.24) faces the Cubs for the first time. San Francisco has won his past four outings and he hasn't allowed more than three runs in any of them.

Key trends: The Giants are 7-1 in Heston's past eight on the road. The Cubs are 0-6 in Hammel's past six on five days of rest. The over is 4-0 in Heston's past four on the road. The under is 5-1 in Hammel's past six vs. teams with a winning record.

Early lean: Cubs and under.

Thursday's six-pack

-- If you watched a lot of baseball the last week, you'd swear the Mets, Blue Jays will never lose again. Ever.

-- Mets are now 42-4 when they get more hits than their opponents.

-- Arizona Cardinal WR Michael Floyd is out 4-6 weeks with broken fingers.

-- Milwaukee Bucks' new advertising slogan: "Fear the Deer". We'll see about that.

-- George W Bush did jury duty this week; how can he not get out of it?

-- A couple at Astros-Rangers game last night was celebrating their 70th wedding annversary- they appeared to have hearing aids, which helps explain the longevity.

Bonus Play Thursday

GIANTS (Heston) @ CUBS (Hammel) 8:05 PM

Take: GIANTS +117

Two serious playoff contenders open a big weekend series tonight as the Giants and Cubs square off at Wrigley Field. San Francisco is off a pair of wins vs. the Braves, while the Cubs return home after having their winning streak snapped last night at Pittsburgh.

Chris Heston, one of three major leaguers to fashion a no-hitter this season, will get the start for the road team while Jason Hammel throws for the hosts. Heston isn’t getting much attention as far as the NL Rookie of the Year conversation is concerned. Even with the headline grabbing gem that got him noticed early this season, Heston seems to still be very much under the radar. But the first-year righty has been a rock solid component in the Giants rotation.

Hammel has not been all that sharp recently, and that might have something to do with a hamstring tweak that surfaced a few starts back. The main issue in what can be called a mild decline is illustrated best in looking at Hammel’s season to date BB/K numbers and then seeing what’s happened recently. For the year, Hammel owns a really impressive 1.83/8.85 ratio per nine innings, and that’s one of the best sets in the game. But in his last three starts since the hammy acted up, Hammel has logged 14.1 innings, and the BB/K totals are 6/11. So it’s easy to see that his control hasn’t been as sharp and he’s not sending as many hitters back to the dugout with bats in hand.

Heston also arrives off a less than stellar outing as he lasted only 4.2 innings at Texas. But even with that sluggish effort, Heston still hasn’t surrendered more than three runs in a game since a rough go against the Pirates, and that was way back at the beginning of June. Heston doesn’t overpower hitters, but he’s pitched smart all season and to state that he’s exceeded expectations is a pretty good sized understatement.

Situational offensive stats point the Giants way here. They’ve done their best work against righties on the road, while the Cubs have actually had some difficulty putting scores on the board when facing righties at home. As for the bullpens, they’re just about dead even as far as the seasonal data goes, although the Giants relievers have the better short term numbers.

This series should be fun to watch. The Giants are about as proven as it gets when it comes to big games. That’s something all new for the Cubs, but they’ve been rising to the occasion lately. Regardless of what transpires the rest of the way, the Cubs are establishing themselves as a legit team to beat in 2016 and beyond, and the fun this year is strictly gravy train material.

As for tonight, I see there being some value at the present number on the Giants side. I make this game a virtual tossup and when that’s the case and I can garner nearly 6/5 with the dog, it’s frequently worth pursuing. I’m a little iffy on Hammel right now, so my choice this evening will be the Giants.

Preview: Twins at Blue Jays

GAME: Minnesota Twins (54-53) at Toronto Blue Jays (57-52)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, August 06 - 7:07 PM EST
WHERE: Rogers Centre, Toronto, Ontario
LINE: 167, -182 TOTAL: 8.5

Josh Donaldson's power surge at the plate is driving the Toronto Blue Jays into contention and the Minnesota Twins into submission. After homering in each of the first three games of the series, Donaldson looks to continue his torrid stretch as host Toronto vies for a sweep of reeling Minnesota on Thursday.

Donaldson belted his career high-tying 29th homer in Wednesday's 9-7 triumph and improved to 12-for-33 with five blasts and 12 RBIs in his last eight contests. The 29-year-old has feasted on the Twins, recording seven homers and 22 RBIs during his 23-game hitting streak versus the club. While the Blue Jays (57-52) pulled within 4 1/2 games of the first-place New York Yankees in the American League East, Minnesota has dropped 13 of 17 to fall two full games behind Toronto in the race for the second wild card. The tumbling Twins finally got their sputtering offense in gear as Wednesday's output matched their run total from the previous five games.

TV: 7:07 p.m. ET, FSN North (Minnesota), RSN (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH Kyle Gibson (8-8, 3.37 ERA) vs. Blue Jays LH Mark Buehrle (11-5, 3.32)

Gibson rebounded from a pair of six-run outings to settle for a no-decision on Saturday after allowing just two over seven strong innings versus Seattle. The 27-year-old also permitted just two runs against Toronto on May 30, but issued four walks to drive up his pitch count before exiting after 5 2/3 frames. Edwin Encarnacion launched a three-run homer on Wednesday to extend his hitting streak to eight games, but is 0-for-5 in his career versus Gibson.

Buehrle recorded his second straight no-decision on Saturday despite allowing three runs over seven innings against Kansas City. The 36-year-old has allowed a homer in each of his last two contests after keeping the ball in the park in six of his previous seven outings. Buehrle enjoyed considerable success versus Minnesota, improving to 29-19 in his career after pitching a complete-game victory on May 29.

WALK-OFFS

1. Toronto has belted multiple homers in 46 games this season and has gone deep in 17 of 18 contests since the All-Star break.

2. Minnesota 2B Brian Dozier is 1-for-13 with six strikeouts in the series.

3. Blue Jays RF Jose Bautista belted his fifth career grand slam on Wednesday, but is just 2-for-12 in the series.

PREDICTION: Blue Jays 5, Twins 3

Preview: Marlins at Braves

GAME: Miami Marlins (43-65) at Atlanta Braves (48-60)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, August 06 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia
LINE: 104, -113 TOTAL: 7.5

Nick Markakis and A.J. Pierzynski are doing their part to keep the Atlanta Braves competitive, even as the team sinks further in the standings. The Braves open a four-game home series Thursday against the disappointing Miami Marlins, who will look to snap Markakis’ hitting streak at 12 games and end Pierzynski’s streak at 10.

But with Freddie Freeman back on the disabled list for the second time this summer, the inability to generate runs has been a heavy factor in Atlanta losing 18 of its past 24 games. The Marlins’ expectations of contending for a National League playoff berth combusted by posting sub-.500 records in each of the first four months. Outfielder Ichiro Suzuki enters the series 96 hits shy of reaching 3,000 for his career and four stolen bases away from 500. A pair of rookies making their ninth major-league starts – Miami’s Jose Urena and Atlanta’s Matt Wisler – take the mound for the series opener.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), SportSouth (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH Jose Urena (1-5, 4.37 ERA) vs. Braves RH Matt Wisler (5-2, 4.44)

Urena made his major-league debut April 14 against the Braves, allowing one hit in one scoreless inning of relief. The 23-year-old went 1-4 in seven starts from late May through the end of June, giving up three runs or fewer in his final six outings before being sent to Triple-A New Orleans. He returned to the rotation after the Marlins dealt Dan Haren and Mat Latos at the trade deadline, giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits in five innings Saturday against San Diego.

Wisler looks to rebound from the worst start of his young career after he was hammered for seven runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings Saturday at Philadelphia. Prior to that outing, the 22-year-old had not allowed more than four earned runs in any start, going 4-0 with a 3.30 ERA in five July starts with victories over three teams in playoff contention (the Nationals, Dodgers and Cardinals). Wisler has yet to lose in three home starts, posting a 2.33 ERA in games at Turner Field.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Braves diagnosed injured SS Andrelton Simmons with a bone bruise in his right thumb as the two-time Gold Glove winner has missed the past four games.

2. Miami 2B Dee Gordon, who is fourth in the NL in hitting (.329), is batting .391 during his current 11-game hitting streak against the Braves, dating back to Aug. 13 last season.

3. Atlanta is 7-2 against Miami this season, holding the Marlins to 2.8 runs per contest.

PREDICTION: Braves 4, Marlins 3
