Gracenote

Aug 3, 2017

Yadier Molina may have caused a stir with his activities over social media of late, but the 35-year-old catcher is also providing some noise with his actions at the plate. After recording his second multi-homer performance of the season and fourth career, Molina looks to continue his surge on Thursday afternoon when the St. Louis Cardinals visit the Milwaukee Brewers for the rubber match of their three-game series.

Molina's three-hit performance helped St. Louis to a 5-4 triumph on Wednesday, marking the club's sixth win in nine outings and moving it to within 4 1/2 games of first-place Chicago in the National League Central. Molina is 6-for-12 with three RBIs in his last three contests for the Cardinals, who reportedly took issue with the veteran's use of Instagram as a means to defend himself against comments by manager Mike Matheny. The Brewers haven't been on the same page in quite some time, dropping 12 of their last 16 to sit 2 1/2 games behind the Cubs. Ryan Braun is 6-for-15 with two RBIs and two runs scored during his four-game hitting streak entering Thursday's tilt versus Michael Wacha, against whom he is 4-for-9 in his career.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (8-4, 3.71 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Matt Garza (4-5, 3.83)

Wacha improved to 5-1 in his last six outings on Friday after scattering three hits over six strong innings in a 1-0 victory against Arizona. The 26-year-old has allowed eight earned runs while striking out 42 batters in that stretch (38 2/3 innings). Wacha has struggled in both outings this season versus Milwaukee, surrendering four runs on seven hits in both no-decisions on May 1 and June 15.

Garza reported no issues in a bullpen session on Monday and is set to make his first start following a second stint on the disabled list this season. The 33-year-old picked up the win in his last encounter with St. Louis despite permitting four runs on five hits in as many innings of a 7-6 triumph on June 14. Garza has kept Kolten Wong (2-for-12) under wraps and rendered Jedd Gyorko (0-for-5), Stephen Piscotty (0-for-3), Randal Grichuk (0-for-3) and Tommy Pham (0-for-2) hitless in smaller sample sizes.

WALK-OFFS

1. Pham is 11-for-29 with six runs scored in his last nine contests.

2. Milwaukee 3B Travis Shaw is 0-for-7 in his last two games and has struck out twice in four of his last five outings.

3. Grichuk is 1-for-10 with seven strikeouts in his last three contests.

Preview: Diamondbacks at Cubs

Gracenote

Aug 3, 2017

The fickle nature of baseball has been on display the past two nights at Wrigley Field, where the Chicago Cubs and the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks have split their first two meetings in opposite fashion. The Diamondbacks answered Chicago’s 16-4 rout in the opener with a 3-0 victory, setting up the rubber match Thursday afternoon.

The Cubs slugged five home runs in Tuesday’s lopsided victory before being shut out on three hits Wednesday. They face a tall task trying to get the offense back on track against right-hander Zack Greinke, who went undefeated in five July starts. Chicago sends left-hander Jose Quintana to the mound in search of his third win in four starts since being acquired from the Chicago White Sox. The Cubs maintained their 2 1/2-game lead over Milwaukee in the National League Central when the Brewers lost 5-4 to St. Louis on Wednesday, while the Diamondbacks pulled ahead of Colorado by a half game for the top NL wild card spot.

TV: 2:20 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN Arizona, CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks RH Zack Greinke (13-4, 2.84 ERA) vs. Cubs LH Jose Quintana (6-9, 4.16)

Greinke hasn’t lost since June 20, winning his last five decisions while posting a 2.08 ERA over his last six outings. The 33-year-old was dominant at St. Louis on Saturday, striking out nine and allowing one run and four hits over seven innings. Greinke is 4-3 with a 4.02 ERA in nine starts against the Cubs.

Quintana has posted three straight quality starts since moving across town, going 2-1 with a 2.37 ERA in his first three outings for the Cubs. The 28-year-old suffered a tough-luck loss at Milwaukee on Friday, as he allowed two runs and four hits over six innings in a 2-1 defeat. Quintana is 0-2 with a 9.58 ERA in two starts against Arizona, including an outing earlier this season with the White Sox in which he was shelled for eight runs in 4 1/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Diamondbacks 3B Jake Lamb snapped a 1-for-21 skid with two doubles and three RBIs Wednesday and is batting .343 with five extra-base hits and 11 RBIs in 10 career games against Chicago.

2. Cubs C Willson Contreras, who struck out as a pinch-hitter Wednesday to snap his 16-game on-base streak, is expected to be back in the lineup Thursday.

3. Arizona RHP Fernando Rodney pitched a perfect ninth inning Wednesday to convert his first save opportunity since July 7.

Preview: Mets at Rockies

Gracenote

Aug 3, 2017

The Colorado Rockies look to avoid losing their first home series since late June when they host the New York Mets on Thursday afternoon in the rubber match of their three-game set. Colorado, which has gone 4-0-1 in home series since dropping two of three to Arizona from June 20-22, edged New York in the opener before suffering a 10-5 defeat on Wednesday.

The loss was the fifth in eight contests for the Rockies, who sit 5 1/2 games ahead of Milwaukee for the second wild-card spot in the National League. Nolan Arenado, who was named the NL Player of the Month for July, leads the majors with 95 RBIs and has gone 7-for-16 over his last four games while Carlos Gonzalez is in the midst of an 11-game hitting streak after belting a two-run homer in Wednesday's setback. New York is attempting to win its first road series since taking two of three in Miami from June 27-29 after riding a six-run sixth inning to victory. Curtis Granderson highlighted the uprising with a three-run homer while top prospect Amed Rosario plated a run with a triple in the previous frame for his first major-league RBI.

TV: 3:10 p.m. ET, SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Rafael Montero (1-7, 5.72 ERA) vs. Rockies RH German Marquez (9-4, 4.08)

Montero makes his fourth consecutive start and eighth overall this season as he seeks his first victory since June 25 at San Francisco. The 26-year-old Dominican escaped Seattle with a no-decision on Friday after surrendering five runs on three hits and five walks in 4 2/3 innings. Montero won his only career start against Colorado on Sept. 10, 2014, when he walked four but struck out seven and scattered three hits over 5 1/3 scoreless frames.

Marquez won his fourth straight start Saturday at Washington, allowing two runs and three hits while registering a career-high 10 strikeouts in seven innings. The 22-year-old Venezuelan has gone 5-0 with a 2.45 ERA in six starts at home since losing to Arizona on May 5. Marquez will be facing New York for the first time in his brief career.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rockies RHP Greg Holland, who is 33-for-34 in save situations this year, has missed two games after cutting his right index finger during what manager Bud Black called "a kitchen accident" on Monday.

2. New York 3B David Wright (neck/shoulder/back) has participated in "low-level" baseball activities at the team's complex in Florida each of the last two days, but no timetable has been given for his return.

3. Colorado C Jonathan Lucroy (stomach illness) has yet to make his debut with the team since being acquired from Texas on Sunday.

Preview: Reds at Pirates

Gracenote

Aug 3, 2017

Cincinnati Reds rookie outfielder Jesse Winker has put his best foot forward in his bid to have an extended stay in the majors. Recalled from Triple-A Louisville prior to the series opener, the 23-year-old has homered in back-to-back contests heading into Thursday's finale against the host Pittsburgh Pirates.

Adam Duvall also went deep for the fourth time in seven games overall in Wednesday's 5-2 victory, improving to 12-for-34 with three homers, 11 RBIs and seven runs scored versus Pittsburgh this season. Like Duvall, the rest of the Reds have run roughshod over the Pirates as the cellar-dwelling club owns a resounding 8-1 mark against Pittsburgh this season and a paltry 36-62 record against everyone else. The plummeting Pirates have dropped six of seven to reside 6 1/2 games behind first-place Chicago in the National League Central. Andrew McCutchen is 3-for-7 in the series and is 8-for-16 with four homers, five RBIs and six runs scored in his last five games.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati), AT&T SportsNet-Pittsburgh

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Sal Romano (2-2, 4.57 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Chad Kuhl (3-7, 4.84)

Romano saw his pitch count elevate rapidly on Friday after allowing six walks in 3 2/3 innings of a no-decision at Miami. The 23-year-old issued three free passes in the first inning to load the bases before striking out the side to end the threat. "You can't defend walks," Romano said. "I'm not really giving up the extra-base hit or hits, but I'm putting guys on with free passes and there's just no excuse for that."

Kuhl also had issues with his control on Friday as he walked five batters in 5 1/3 innings of a no-decision at San Diego. The 24-year-old otherwise has pitched well in his last 11 outings, but only has a 2-2 mark to show for it despite registering a 3.72 ERA. Kuhl has limited experience against the current roster of the Reds, save for Scooter Gennett (1-for-6).

WALK-OFFS

1. Cincinnati 3B Eugenio Suarez is 4-for-9 with a homer, two RBIs and three runs scored in his last three games.

2. Pirates SS Jordy Mercer is just 3-for-21 in his last seven contests.

3. Reds RF Scott Schebler, who went on the disabled list Tuesday, has a bruised rotator cuff and will be out "a few weeks," manager Bryan Price said.

Preview: Tigers at Orioles

Gracenote

Aug 3, 2017

The surging Baltimore Orioles bid to match a season high with a sixth straight victory on Thursday when they host the opener of a four-game series against the Detroit Tigers. Baltimore has outscored its foes 29-9 during that stretch, highlighted by limiting Kansas City to just three runs in their series to close within 2 1/2 games of the Royals for the second wild card in the American League.

Tim Beckham continued to make a good impression on his new team, ripping both an RBI triple and run-scoring double in Wednesday's 6-0 victory to improve to 4-for-8 with three runs scored since being acquired by Tampa Bay at the trade deadline. While the Orioles reside one win shy of evening their record, the Tigers have emerged victorious in four of five to move within six games of the Royals. James McCann extended his hitting streak to 12 games with an RBI single in Wednesday's 2-0 rain-soaked win over the New York Yankees. The 27-year-old is 4-for-10 with two runs scored against Baltimore in 2017, although he is 0-for-7 in his career versus Thursday starter Chris Tillman.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, MASN (Baltimore)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers LH Matthew Boyd (5-5, 5.30 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Chris Tillman (1-6, 7.65)

Boyd posted his third straight victory on Saturday after allowing three runs on eight hits in 7 1/3 innings of a 5-3 triumph versus Houston. The 26-year-old permitted a two-run homer to Evan Gattis in the first inning before settling down nicely, striking out five without walking a batter. Boyd would like to atone for his lone career outing versus Baltimore on May 16, in which he yielded a season-high seven runs on eight hits in 2 1/3 innings.

Tillman's troublesome season continued on Friday as he allowed eight runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings in an 8-2 setback to Texas. The 29-year-old fell to 0-6 in his last 11 outings and has not tasted victory since scattering three hits over five innings in a 4-0 win versus the Chicago White Sox on May 7. For all of his troubles, Tillman owns a 6-0 mark with a 2.45 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in nine career encounters against the Tigers.

WALK-OFFS

1. Baltimore C Caleb Joseph extended his hitting streak to five games by belting a two-run shot on Wednesday, marking his second homer in three contests.

2. Detroit LF Justin Upton has four extra-base hits and eight RBIs during his last four contests.

3. Orioles LF Trey Mancini is 7-for-18 with four RBIs and five runs scored during his five-game hitting streak.

Preview: Yankees at Indians

Gracenote

Aug 3, 2017

Sonny Gray will make his debut for the New York Yankees when they open up a big four-game series at the Cleveland Indians on Thursday. Acquired in a trade with the Oakland Athletics on Monday, Gray brings an ace-like presence to the Yankees and seems to be overjoyed at the change of scenery.

"Every kid wants to play for the Yankees," Gray told reporters. "It is not something that I'm going to take for granted. I'm very excited to be here and get to work. Thursday, for me, can't come soon enough." The 27-year-old right-hander will slot into what figures to be a temporary six-man rotation for New York, which is coming off a 2-0 loss to Detroit on Wednesday in a rain-marred affair that took nearly eight hours to complete - falling one game out of first place in the American League East. The Indians, in first place in the AL Central by 2 1/2 games, have dropped three in a row following a nine-game winning streak and had their opportunity to end the slide wiped away by rain Wednesday in Boston, forcing a rotation shuffle that gives ace Corey Kluber the start in the series opener. Cleveland placed shutdown reliever Andrew Miller (knee) on the 10-day disabled list and announced that starter Josh Tomlin could miss six weeks with a left hamstring tendon strain.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, YES (New York), STO (Cleveland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Sonny Gray (6-5, 3.43 ERA) vs. Indians RH Corey Kluber (8-3, 2.90)

Gray finished his stay in Oakland with a streak of six straight quality starts, during which he was 4-2 with a 1.37 ERA. Included in that span was a scoreless six-inning outing in a 5-0 win over Cleveland on July 14, which left the Vanderbilt product 3-2 with a 3.43 ERA in his career versus the Indians. He has had solid results against several Cleveland regulars, including Edwin Encarnacion (5-for-21), Carlos Santana (2-for-18), Francisco Lindor (2-for-12) and Jose Ramirez (2-for-12).

Kluber gave up four runs - his highest total in a span of 11 starts - in a no-decision at the Chicago White Sox his last time out. He fanned 12 batters and has an eye-popping 120 strikeouts in 77 1/3 innings since coming off the disabled list in June. The former Cy Young Award winner has a 1.91 ERA in five career starts against the Yankees and has dominated New York newcomer Todd Frazier (2-for-23, nine strikeouts).

WALK-OFFS

1. Yankees RF Aaron Judge has struck out in 21 consecutive games.

2. Lindor is batting .380 during a 12-game hitting streak.

3. New York is 20-11 in its last 31 games at Progressive Field.

Preview: White Sox at Red Sox

Gracenote

Aug 3, 2017

If the Boston Red Sox are going to win the strongest division in baseball, they would do well to take advantage of weak competition from outside the American League East. The Red Sox will try to do just that when they host the struggling Chicago White Sox for a four-game series starting Thursday.

Boston leads the AL East by one game over the New York Yankees and has been red-hot at the plate, averaging 7.5 runs and hitting .338 as a team over the past four games. The Red Sox are 54-12 when scoring at least four runs and have won 28 of their last 31 games when doing so. The White Sox might be eager to hit the road after a 5-1 loss to visiting Toronto on Wednesday clinched their fifth straight series loss at home. Chicago has lost 19 of its last 23 games overall and owns the worst record in the American League.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, CSN Chicago, NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox RH Miguel Gonzalez (5-9, 4.59 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Rick Porcello (4-14, 4.55)

Gonzalez has posted three straight quality starts since coming off the disabled list, but he has just one win to show for it. The 33-year-old Mexican gave up four runs (three earned) over six innings in a no-decision against Cleveland last time out. Gonzalez is 6-1 with a 3.09 ERA in 13 games (11 starts) against the Red Sox, including a 4-0 mark at Fenway Park.

Porcello has lost his last five decisions and is winless in six starts since picking up his most recent win on June 23. The 28-year-old had a streak of four straight quality starts snapped Friday, as he allowed four runs over seven innings in a loss to Kansas City. Porcello is 10-8 with a 4.19 ERA in 22 starts against the White Sox.

WALK-OFFS

1. Boston INF Eduardo Nunez is 11-for-22 with six extra-base hits and nine RBIs in five games since being acquired from San Francisco.

2. Chicago starting pitchers have posted a 6.17 ERA and only four quality starts in 18 games since the All-Star break.

3. Red Sox 3B Rafael Devers is 12-for-28 since making his major-league debut July 25 and is riding a six-game hitting streak.

GAME: Los Angeles Dodgers (53-28) at Atlanta Braves (37-41)

Preview: Dodgers at Braves

Gracenote

Aug 3, 2017

The Los Angeles Dodgers have lost a grand total of three times since the Fourth of July and all three of those defeats have come against the rebuilding Atlanta Braves, who host Thursday’s finale of a three-game series. Tyler Flowers’ eighth-inning pinch-hit homer powered Atlanta to a 5-3 victory Wednesday, snapping the Dodgers’ major-league record streak of 53 consecutive games won when leading at any point.

Atlanta snapped a six-game losing streak with Wednesday’s victory, and had won just once in 10 tries since taking the first two contests of a four-game set at Los Angeles on July 20-21. Rookie Johan Camargo finished with two hits Wednesday and is 3-for-6 in the series, snapping a 3-for-19 skid in his previous five games. Dodgers first baseman Cody Bellinger continued his march toward National League Rookie-of-the-Year honors by slugging his 30th homer Wednesday in his 87th game of the season, moving within five of Mike Piazza’s franchise record for homers by a first-year player. Right fielder Yasiel Puig collected his third consecutive multi-hit game and is batting .357 in his past 13 contests.

TV: 7:35 p.m. ET, SportsNet Los Angeles, FSN Southeast (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers LH Alex Wood (12-1, 2.38 ERA) vs. Braves LH Sean Newcomb (1-5, 4.50)

Wood rebounded from the Braves handing him his first loss of the season, beating San Francisco on Friday despite allowing four runs on eight hits in seven innings. That was a far cry from the nine runs (seven earned) and nine hits he surrendered July 21 against Atlanta, after allowing a total of 11 runs in his prior 12 starts. Wood made his major-league debut with the Braves in 2013, going 21-20 in 86 games with Atlanta before being traded to the Dodgers in 2015.

Newcomb has pitched well in his past two starts after struggling in the first part of July, getting no-decisions against the Dodgers and Philadelphia while allowing only four runs combined. He held Los Angeles to three runs on three hits with nine strikeouts over six innings on July 23, and followed that up with five innings of one-run, two-hit pitching Saturday against the Phillies. Newcomb, who is making his 10th major-league start, has surrendered three earned runs or fewer six times.

WALK-OFFS

1. Atlanta INF Brandon Phillips started at third base Wednesday, his first appearance at the position in 1,845 career major-league games.

2. The Dodgers finished 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position Wednesday, and three relievers combined to allow three runs on six hits with three walks in four innings.

3. Braves RF Nick Markakis singled in the seventh inning to move within one hit of 2,000 for his career while Phillips is 32 hits away from reaching that mark.

GAME: Texas Rangers (39-40) at Minnesota Twins (40-37)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, August 03 - 8:10 PM EST

Preview: Rangers at Twins

Gracenote

Aug 3, 2017

The Minnesota Twins and Texas Rangers have been sliding downward in the American League wild-card race, and both teams look to turn things around when they open a four-game series on Thursday at Target Field. The Twins won for just the second time in nine games on Wednesday, the same day on which the Rangers halted their four-game losing streak.

Minnesota's slide has dropped it 3 1/2 games behind Kansas City for the AL's second wild card, while Texas is 4 1/2 games back. Both clubs made deals at the non-waiver trade deadline that appear to indicate they aren't viable contenders, as the Twins dealt closer Brandon Kintzler while the Rangers parted with top starter Yu Darvish. Texas youngster Joey Gallo is in the midst of a torrid power display, with three homers in his last two games and six over nine contests. Joe Mauer recorded two hits in Minnesota's 5-2 win over San Diego on Wednesday to tie Tony Oliva (1,917) for third place on the franchise list.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (Texas), FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers RH A.J. Griffin (4-2, 5.77 ERA) vs. Twins LH Adalberto Mejia (4-4, 4.07)

Griffin will be activated to make his first major-league start since injuring his left intercostal muscle in late May. The 29-year-old, who is 2-1 with a 5.00 ERA in three career starts against the Twins, was stunned the injury sidelined him for more than two months. "I didn't think it'd be this long. ... I thought it took a little bit longer than I expected," Griffin told reporters. "With the way that everything was going, with the trade deadline and everything, we didn't really know what we were doing yet, so I was just trying to hang tight and stay positive and just control the things that I could control."

Mejia is winless in his last four turns, with no-decisions in each of his last three outings. The 24-year-old rookie has experienced some difficulties in his 10 home starts, going 2-3 with a 4.91 ERA and 1.54 WHIP. Mejia, who never has faced Texas, has allowed fewer than three runs in six of his last eight turns.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rangers 2B Rougned Odor went 0-for-3 on Wednesday after collecting four homers and nine RBIs over his previous three games.

2. Minnesota 3B Miguel Sano slugged his 25th homer on Wednesday after going deep just once in his previous nine contests.

3. Texas RF/DH Shin-Soo Choo went 6-for-12 with four runs scored in the team's three-game series against Seattle.

Preview: Rays at Astros

Gracenote

Aug 3, 2017

The Tampa Bay Rays are taking advantage of the injury-plagued Houston Astros this week and look to clinch a series victory when they visit Thursday night for the finale of the four-game set. Logan Morrison homered for the second straight night and four pitchers held the high-powered Astros in check for a 3-0 victory Wednesday that gave the Rays three wins in their last four outings.

Morrison went 2-for-26 in his last nine games of July and has knocked in four runs in the first two of August for Tampa Bay, which trails Kansas City by a half-game for the second wild-card spot in the American League. Winless left-hander Blake Snell takes the ball for the Rays in the finale against righty Collin McHugh, who makes his third start of the season and tries to beat Tampa Bay for the first time. Houston leads the AL with 69 victories, but is just 2-5 over its last seven games with standouts George Springer and Carlos Correa on the disabled list and a pitching staff that has struggled a bit. AL Player of the Month for July Jose Altuve is 0-for-8 in his last two games for the Astros while teammate Josh Reddick has hit safely in eight in a row.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays LH Blake Snell (0-6, 4.87 ERA) vs. Astros RH Collin McHugh (0-0, 4.22)

Snell has pitched better since returning from a stint in the minor leagues, allowing nine runs over 21 1/3 innings, but is still looking for his first victory since notching six as a rookie in 2016. The 24-year-old has walked 40 in 68 1/3 innings and the Rays emerged with a victory in just three of his 13 starts this year. Evan Gattis is 3-for-3 with a homer versus Snell, who yielded three runs over five innings in a no-decision against Houston on April 22.

McHugh recorded a quality start in his second appearance of the season Saturday at Detroit when he permitted one run on four hits with seven strikeouts over six innings of a no-decision. The 30-year-old Indiana native gave up four runs on four hits (two homers) over 4 2/3 innings in his 2017 debut July 22 at Baltimore. Morrison is 4-for-13 with three walks, four homers and seven RBIs versus McHugh, who is 0-4 with a 2.52 ERA in four games against the Rays.

WALK-OFFS

1. Houston 1B Yuli Gurriel, who was named AL Rookie of the Month for July, is 10-for-33 against the Rays in 2017.

2. Morrison has belted a major-league high 20 of his team-high and career-best 28 homers on the road this season.

3. Altuve boasts 42 multiple-hit games this season and 21 where he has not registered one.
