Royals vs Rangers

Play - Texas Rangers w/Hamels

Edges - Rangers: Cole Hamels 10-3 team starts at night, and 11-4 team starts versus right handers this season. Royals: Yordano Ventura 1-3 team starts versus A.L. West this season. With Hamels 6-1 with a 2.34 ERA in his last seven team starts, and Ventura 0-5 with 6.33 ERA in his last five starts, we recommend a 1* play on Texas. Thank you and good luck as always.

Preview: Rockies at Mets

GAME: Colorado Rockies (49-52) at New York Mets (53-47)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 28 - 1:10 PM EST
WHERE: Citi Field, New York City, New York
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The New York Mets had a chance to earn a series win and put themselves in a better position with the trade deadline approaching but are instead picking up the pieces after a devastating loss. The Mets will try to bounce back when they host the Colorado Rockies in the opener of a four-game series on Thursday.

The Mets came from behind to take the lead in the rubber match against the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday, only to have closer Jeurys Familia’s streak of 52 straight saves converted come to an end in a 5-4 setback. New York has alternated wins and losses in the 12 games since the All-Star break and managed more than four runs only three times in those dozen contests, highlighting the need for an offensive upgrade before the Aug. 1 trade deadline. The Rockies are further out of the race but are winners of six of their last seven and just got done taking two of three from another postseason contender at the Baltimore Orioles. Colorado has bats available at the trade deadline and could be looking to move an outfielder to open up more time for prospect David Dahl, who hit his first career home run on Wednesday.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, ROOT (Colorado), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies LH Tyler Anderson (3-3, 3.56 ERA) vs. Mets RH Jacob deGrom (6-5, 2.73)

Anderson picked up the win in each of his last three starts with some help from the offense, which totaled 23 runs in those three contests. The 26-year-old rookie scattered three runs and eight hits over six innings while striking out six against Atlanta on Saturday and yielded three or fewer runs in seven of his eight starts. Anderson is facing New York for the first time and is 0-2 with a 3.86 ERA in two road starts.

DeGrom was two different pitchers in his last two starts, tossing a one-hit shutout at Philadelphia on July 17 before getting ripped at Miami on Saturday. The Stetson product was reached for five runs on 10 hits and a walk in 3 2/3 innings to snap a three-start winning streak. DeGrom has never lost in three starts against Colorado, boasting a 2-0 record with a 1.27 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 21 1/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Rockies placed RHP Jason Motte (shoulder) on the 15-day disabled list and reinstated LHP Chris Rusin.

2. Mets 3B Jose Reyes (strained intercostal) is not expected to play Thursday but could return on Friday.

3. New York 2B Neil Walker went 3-for-3 on Wednesday, one more than his hit total from the previous 11 games.

Preview: Diamondbacks at Brewers

GAME: Arizona Diamondbacks (42-59) at Milwaukee Brewers (43-56)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 28 - 2:10 PM EST
WHERE: Miller Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Arizona Diamondbacks look to string together two big offensive efforts when they visit the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday for the finale of their four-game set. Yasmany Tomas belted two home runs for the second time in four games as the Diamondbacks totaled 12 hits en route to an 8-1 victory on Wednesday after dropping the first two contests of the series.

Tomas is 7-for-16 with eight RBIs over his last four games and Jean Segura has hit safely in nine straight contests, going 16-for-36 during that stretch. The Brewers were held to five hits Wednesday after scoring 16 times in the first two games of the series and 27 over their last four contests. Milwaukee has some decisions to make before the August 1 trade deadline as one of its players potentially on the block is catcher Jonathan Lucroy, who is 5-for-17 over his last five contests. The Brewers are 13 games under .500 overall but have played better at home with a 26-25 record.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks LH Robbie Ray (5-9, 4.53 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Zach Davies (7-4, 3.64)

Ray lost for the fourth time in five decisions last time out, when he allowed six runs - three earned - in five innings despite striking out 10. The 24-year-old Tennessee native has registered 132 strikeouts in 109 1/3 innings and posted at least seven in seven straight starts. Ray, who will be facing Milwaukee for the first time in his career, is 2-5 with a 3.86 ERA on the road this season.

Davies has been outstanding in his last three starts, gaining two victories and a no-decision while permitting three runs over 20 innings. The 23-year-old Arizona native did not give up a home run in those three outings after serving up three blasts in a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on June 30. Davies, who is 5-3 with a 3.56 ERA in 11 home starts, never has faced the Diamondbacks.

WALK-OFFS

1. Milwaukee 2B Scooter Gennett is 8-for-24 with a homer and six RBIs during his six-game hitting streak.

2. Arizona 1B Paul Goldschmidt has collected 477 RBIs, two shy of Steve Finley for second place on the franchise list.

3. Brewers OF Ryan Braun saw his 11-game hitting streak come to an end Wednesday by going 0-for-3.

GAME: Philadelphia Phillies (46-57) at Atlanta Braves (35-66)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 28 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Philadelphia Phillies hope to rediscover their offensive touch Thursday as they continue their 10-game road trip with the opener of a four-game series against the Atlanta Braves. Philadelphia has scored a total of one run in its last two contests and fell to 2-4 on its trek with Wednesday's 11-1 setback against Miami.

The top of the Phillies' batting order - Cesar Hernandez, Odubel Herrera and Maikel Franco - collected seven of the team's 10 hits in the loss, with Hernandez extending his hitting streak to five games with his second three-hit performance in that span. Atlanta returns home from a 3-6 road trip that concluded with a two-game sweep in Minnesota. The Braves (35-66), who own the worst record in the major leagues, received a stellar performance at the plate from Freddie Freeman as the first baseman tied career highs with four hits and five RBIs. It marked the fifth time Freeman drove in five runs and first since Sept. 23 against the Mets in New York.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, FSN Southeast (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Aaron Nola (5-9, 4.75 ERA) vs. Braves RH Matt Wisler (4-10, 4.92)

Nola lost his fifth consecutive decision on Saturday after surrendering six runs and six hits in four innings at Pittsburgh. The 23-year-old native of Louisiana, who hasn't won since tossing six scoreless frames against Milwaukee on June 5, has yielded at least five runs in five of his last six outings. Nola was tagged for five runs - two earned - and seven hits over seven frames in a loss to Atlanta on May 20, falling to 2-1 with a 1.73 ERA in four career starts versus the Braves.

Wisler is coming off a string of three straight road starts during which he went 1-2 after yielding six runs in each outing. The 23-year-old from Ohio has not fared well at home, going 1-6 with a 4.33 ERA in 11 turns at Turner Field. Wisler is 1-2 with a 5.12 ERA in three career starts against the Phillies, splitting his two outings versus them this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Phillies are 6-3 against the Braves this season, including a three-game sweep at home earlier this month.

2. Atlanta landed a power-hitting prospect Wednesday, acquiring INF Travis Demeritte from Texas for RHP Lucas Harrell and LHP Dario Alvarez.

3. Philadelphia is expected to activate OF Aaron Altherr, who has been on the disabled list since March with a torn tendon in his left wrist.

Preview: Cardinals at Marlins

GAME: St. Louis Cardinals (54-47) at Miami Marlins (55-46)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 28 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Marlins Park, Miami, Florida
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

If the season ended today, the Miami Marlins would be in the National League wild card game while perennial contenders to St. Louis Cardinals would be on the outside looking in. The Cardinals will try to turn the tables and make up some ground when they visit the Marlins in the opener of a four-game series on Thursday.

St. Louis enters the series with some momentum after fighting back with a pair of runs off New York Mets closer Jeurys Familia in the ninth inning on Wednesday to earn a 5-4 win in the rubber match of the three-game series. The Cardinals are trying to make up a one-game gap on Miami in this series and are planning on making a more significant run up the standings with nine straight games against last-place teams Cincinnati and Atlanta beginning after the Aug. 1 trade deadline. The Marlins bounced back from a pair of shutouts by outscoring the Philadelphia Phillies 16-1 on Tuesday and Wednesday to stay clear of New York and St. Louis. Slugger Giancarlo Stanton went 4-for-9 with a home run and four RBIs in the two wins and is 4-for-11 with three doubles against the Cardinals this season.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), FSN Florida (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (5-7, 4.37 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Jose Fernandez (12-4, 2.54)

Wacha is trying to end a string of three straight no decisions and is looking to complete seven innings for the first time since June. 17. The Texas A&M product, who allowed three earned runs or fewer in each of his eight appearances, was reached for two runs and 10 hits in six innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday. Wacha is making his second career appearance against the Marlins and is 3-3 with a 4.02 ERA in nine road starts this season.

Fernandez surrendered two runs or fewer in each of his last three outings and was dominant in the first two following the All-Star break, notching 21 strikeouts in 13 1/3 innings. The Cuba native is historically great at home with a 26-1 career record and yielded a total of four earned runs in his last eight outings in front of the home fans. Fernandez is second in the majors with 175 strikeouts, trailing only Washington’s Max Scherzer (181).

WALK-OFFS

1. The Marlins will get 2B Dee Gordon back from an 80-game PED suspension on Thursday.

2. St. Louis has yet to name a starter for Saturday, and top prospect Alex Reyes remains an option.

3. Miami OF Ichiro Suzuki is three hits shy of reaching 3,000 for his career.

Preview: Orioles at Twins

GAME: Baltimore Orioles (58-42) at Minnesota Twins (37-63)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 28 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Target Field, Minneapolis, Minnesota
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The American League East-leading Baltimore Orioles look to avoid a third consecutive loss when they visit the Minnesota Twins on Thursday to make up a contest that was rained out on May 9. Baltimore, which owns a two-game division lead over Toronto, was limited to seven runs during a three-game series against Colorado that began with a 3-2 victory but ended with back-to-back defeats.

Manny Machado is riding a seven-game hitting streak after producing the Orioles' lone run on Wednesday with his 21st homer. Minnesota will be attempting to halt a losing streak that reached three games with Wednesday's 9-7 loss to Atlanta. Every member of the lineup recorded at least one hit for the Twins, who fell into a 7-0 hole and battled back to get within 8-7 before having their AL-worst record drop to 37-63. Kurt Suzuki has hit safely in six of his last seven contests after going 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in the defeat.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MASN (Baltimore), FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Ubaldo Jimenez (5-9, 7.38 ERA) vs. Twins RH Kyle Gibson (3-6, 4.67)

After appearing to have possibly turned the corner with back-to-back solid starts, Jimenez has been roughed up in each of his last two outings, surrendering 11 runs and 11 hits over 5 2/3 innings in a pair of losses. The 32-year-old Dominican, who allowed three runs and seven hits over 11 frames in two victories over San Diego on June 22 and 28, has been tagged for at least five runs 10 times this year. Jimenez improved to 5-3 with a 2.55 ERA in 10 career games (nine starts) against Minnesota on April 7, yielding two runs - one earned - and eight hits over seven innings in his season debut.

Gibson recorded his third win in four decisions on Friday, when he gave up one run and two hits in eight innings at Boston. It was the longest outing of the year for the 28-year-old native of Indiana, who yielded four runs in each of his previous three turns. Gibson's career record against the Orioles evened out at 1-1 on April 6 after he surrendered four runs on seven hits and five walks in five frames at Baltimore.

WALK-OFFS

1. Twins DH Kennys Vargas is riding a five-game hitting streak during which he is 6-for-18.

2. Baltimore C Matt Wieters went 2-for-4 on Wednesday after recording just one hit over his previous 10 games.

3. Minnesota OF Eddie Rosario has hit safely in only two of his last five contests but has collected six hits in those games.

Preview: White Sox at Cubs

GAME: Chicago White Sox (50-51) at Chicago Cubs (60-40)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 28 - 8:05 PM EST
WHERE: Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Chicago Cubs have struggled to score runs against the dregs of the Chicago White Sox starting rotation, and now they have to face their crosstown rivals’ ace. Volatile left-hander Chris Sale returns from a suspension to face the Cubs on Thursday as the visiting White Sox try to claim three of four in the Crosstown Cup.

The White Sox appeared poised for a third straight win in the series Wednesday before Cubs slugger Kris Bryant broke up a no-hitter with a game-tying solo shot in the sixth inning. It was the first of three homers for the Cubs, who routed the White Sox 8-1 as Javier Baez and Addison Russell added blasts. The Cubs hope the late-inning outburst is a sign of things to come for a lineup that has sputtered against weak competition the past week and was hitless through five innings against Anthony Ranaudo. The collapse ended a four-game winning streak for the White Sox, who have lost six of their last seven on the road.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, WGN (White Sox), CSN Chicago (Cubs)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox LH Chris Sale (14-3, 3.18 ERA) vs. Cubs RH John Lackey (7-7, 3.79)

Sale was scheduled to start Saturday but was scratched and later suspended for insubordination and violation of team rules after reportedly destroying the team’s throwback jerseys they were slated to wear that day. The 27-year-old hasn’t pitched since July 18 at Seattle, where he limited the Mariners to one hit over eight scoreless innings. Sale has made two starts and two relief appearances against the Cubs, going 2-0 with a 0.56 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 16 innings.

Lackey is winless in eight starts since June 8, going 0-5 with a 5.73 ERA over that stretch. The 37-year-old has pitched well enough to give the Cubs a chance his last two times out, but the team has scored just one run in each contest. Lackey is 3-7 with a 3.73 ERA in 16 career starts against the White Sox and has not beaten them since 2005.

WALK-OFFS

1. Bryant’s homer Wednesday snapped a season-high 16-game streak without one and matched his career-high of 26 set last season.

2. White Sox LF Melky Cabrera, who is 11-for-36 versus Lackey, had his 11-game hitting streak snapped Wednesday but reached base for the 12th straight contest.

3. Slumping Cubs 2B/OF Ben Zobrist (5-for-35 since the All-Star break) is 6-for-11 versus Sale.

GAME: Kansas City Royals (49-51) at Texas Rangers (58-44)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 28 - 8:05 PM EST
WHERE: Globe Life Park in Arlington, Arlington, Texas
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Cole Hamels, who hasn't allowed an earned run in his last two starts, attempts to defeat Kansas City for the second time in six days when the Texas Rangers host the struggling Royals on Thursday in the opener of a four-game series. Hamels allowed an unearned run and five hits in 5 1/3 innings of the 7-4 triumph over Kansas City.

The Royals posted a 7-5 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday for only their second win in eight contests. Kansas City is just 7-15 this month behind a sluggish offense that is tied with Tampa Bay for last in the American League in runs scored (395). Texas' Prince Fielder is slated to undergo season-ending surgery on Friday to repair a herniated disk in his neck. Fielder batted just .212 with eight home runs this season and will be having neck surgery for the second time in 26 months.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN Kansas City, FSN Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals RH Yordano Ventura (6-8, 4.99 ERA) vs. Rangers LH Cole Hamels (11-2, 2.87)

Ventura has been cleared to start despite suffering a rib contusion on Saturday, when he was struck by a ball hit by Texas' Adrian Beltre. He gave up three runs and three hits over five innings while losing and slipped to 2-3 with a 4.94 ERA in five career starts against the Rangers. Ventura is 0-4 over his last five turns and already has served up 14 homers - matching his total of each of the last two seasons.

Hamels is 6-1 with a 2.19 ERA over his last eight starts despite two poor turns immediately prior to the All-Star break. He allowed 10 runs, 15 hits and nine walks in 8 1/3 innings during the stretch before giving up just nine hits in 13 1/3 frames in his last two outings. Hamels is 1-1 with a 6.55 ERA in two career starts against Kansas City.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rangers CF Ian Desmond hit a two-run homer in Wednesday's 6-4 loss to Oakland - his fifth blast in the last 10 games.

2. Kansas City LF Alex Gordon went 3-for-4 and scored twice on Wednesday to raise his average 10 points to .209.

3. Texas acquired RHP Lucas Harrell and LHP Dario Alvarez from Atlanta on Wednesday for INF Travis Demeritte.

GAME: Boston Red Sox (55-44) at Los Angeles Angels (45-56)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 28 - 10:05 PM EST
WHERE: Angel Stadium of Anaheim, Anaheim, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

David Price once again tries to find his past form when the Boston Red Sox open an 11-game road trip with Thursday's opener of a four-game set against the Los Angeles Angels. Price is 1-3 with a 5.30 ERA over his last six starts and has been touched for 11 or more hits in three of the outings.

Price, the 2012 American League Cy Young Award winner with Tampa Bay, has been largely a disappointment in his first season with the Red Sox. His 4.51 ERA is the highest of his career and well above the 3.09 career mark that he possessed entering this season. Los Angeles' Albert Pujols collected his 28th RBI of the month - most in the majors -- in Wednesday's 7-5 loss to Kansas City and is 22 away from his third 100-RBI season in five campaigns with the Angels. Los Angeles' Johnny Giavotella has recorded back-to-back three-hit performances and went 8-for-12 with five runs scored in the series against the Royals.

TV: 10:05 p.m. ET, NESN (Boston), FSN West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH David Price (9-7, 4.51 ERA) vs. Angels RH Jered Weaver (8-8, 5.32 ERA)

Price did not factor in the decision in his last outing, when he gave up five runs and 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings against Minnesota. He has recorded just five strikeouts over 11 1/3 frames in his last two starts after striking out 10 in each of his previous three. Price is 5-5 with a 3.59 ERA in 12 career starts against the Angels and has experienced solid success against Pujols (3-for-19, two homers) and Mike Trout (3-for-16, nine strikeouts).

Weaver was roughed up for six runs and seven hits in four innings while losing to Houston in his last turn. He is 2-2 over his last four outings, giving up one run in each of the victories and six in both defeats. Weaver is 4-6 with a 4.16 ERA in 16 career starts against the Red Sox and has struggled with David Ortiz (12-for-37, three homers).

WALK-OFFS

1. Red Sox RHP Craig Kimbrel (knee) is slated to make a rehab appearance at Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday and could be activated early next week.

2. Trout is mired in an eight-game homerless drought and has gone deep just twice in July.

3. Boston 1B Hanley Ramirez has recorded five homers and 12 RBIs over his last seven games.

The Washington Nationals continue their nine-game road trip with four in San Francisco beginning Thursday and seem to be catching the Giants at the right time. First-place San Francisco lost nine of 11 since the All-Star break after a 2-1 setback to Cincinnati on Wednesday to see its advantage shrink to 2 1/2 games over Los Angeles in the National League West while East-leading Washington boasts a four-game advantage over Miami following Wednesday's 4-1 victory over Cleveland.

Washington is 5-6 since the break and part of the reason for its mediocrity is superstar Bryce Harper, who is 0-for-17 over his last five games and batting .177 in July to drop his season average to .237. The Giants are struggling with a 4.97 ERA in their last 11 games, dropping their season number to 3.70, and have recorded only three quality starts since the break. However, San Francisco wasted a strong performance by Madison Bumgarner on Wednesday, prompting manager Bruce Bochy to tell reporters: "It’s disappointing. To have a starter throw like that, and couldn’t get it going offensively. That’s a tough one. ... (Bumgarner) did pitch great.” San Francisco's Johnny Cueto continues his pursuit of the NL Cy Young and opposes Tanner Roark, who is coming off his first loss in more than a month.

TV: 10:15 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Washington), CSN Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Tanner Roark (9-6, 3.05 ERA) vs. Giants RH Johnny Cueto (13-2, 2.53)

Roark allowed five runs and four hits - including two home runs for the first time this season - in five innings to snap a five-start streak in which he pitched at least seven frames, with a 5-3 loss to San Diego on Friday. The 29-year-old Illinois native was 3-0 with a 1.72 ERA in his previous five games (four starts) while earning a hold in a relief appearance prior to the All-Star break. Roark is 3-0 with a 4.30 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 14 1/3 innings in four games (one start) against San Francisco, not including a pair of relief appearances in the 2014 NL Division Series when he permitted one run in 2 1/3 frames.

Cueto received a no-decision after allowing an unearned run and striking out nine in six innings of the Giants' 2-1 victory in 12 innings at Yankee Stadium on Saturday. The 30-year-old Dominican, who tries to join Washington's Stephen Strasburg as the only 14-game winners in the NL, is 5-1 with a 2.43 ERA in nine home starts this season. Harper is 2-for-7 with three walks and two strikeouts versus Cueto, who is 7-3 with a 3.55 ERA in 11 turns and owns a 16-inning scoreless streak versus the Nationals.

WALK-OFFS

1. Washington LF Jayson Werth extended his career-best on-base streak to 30 games - the longest current run in the majors - with a walk Wednesday.

2. Giants INF Ramiro Pena was scratched Wednesday after leaving Tuesday's game with a groin injury.

3. San Francisco is 0-36 when trailing after eight innings this season.

PREDICTION: Giants 3, Nationals 2
