Los Angeles at New York
Pick: Under 9

Despite an offensive show yesterday in the Bronx, don't forget these are two poor offensive teams. They both rank in the bottom 10 in slugging, while the Angels are #17 in runs scored, the Yankees #23. New York is also #25 in on base percentage. The Angels go with Jhoulys Chacin, who has a 3.73 ERA in five starts since being traded to the Angels last month. He has never faced the Yankees but has plenty of experience against third baseman Chase Headley (2-for-15) and second baseman Starlin Castro (3-for-14). New York is 18-7-1 UNDER the total against a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15. The Yankees go with Ivan Nova (4-3, 4.41 ERA), who has a 33-8 strikeout-to-walk ratio and throws best at home with a 2.22 ERA in 24+ home innings. The UNDER is 7-2-1 when the Yankees face an opponent that has scored five runs or more in their previous game and this total is too high.

Take the Cincinnati Reds tonight, as my Bonus Play.

I'm not listing pitchers, and to be honest, don't have one thing in particular about this game.

This is a healthy division rivalry, and the Reds, I believe, will be fired up to challenge their arch-nemesis from the National League Central.

I know St. Louis is throwing ace Adam Wainwright, and since going 1-3 with a 7.16 ERA in April, he's produced four straight quality starts, but there's a little something called the due theory, too. He has struggled against Cincinnati in his career, going 8-10 in 24 career games including 18 starts with a 4.51 ERA, his second-highest ERA against any foe.

In his last start against the Reds on April 16, Wainwright allowed a season-high seven runs and 10 hits including five doubles over 5.1 innings to snap a three-game win streak against Cincinnati.

St. Louis has won three of five meetings against Cincinnati this season, so I'm looking for some revenge in this one.

And for my complimentary play, I look to improve on my 66-58 run with free picks: N.Y. Mets (+105) at MILWAUKEE

The STORYLINE in this game today - The Milwaukee Brewers open a four-game series with the defending NL Champion New York Mets at Miller Park, and in this one I'm taking the road team and want you listing the scheduled starters: Bartolo Colon and Jimmy Nelson, who is taking the mound after what was arguably his first bad outing of the season.

The X-FACTOR in making this choice on this game - I know the Brewers have been able to count on the consistency of Nelson, who leads the team in victories (5), ERA (3.43), strikeouts (60) and innings pitched (76.0) with a team-high eight quality starts, but the key here is Colon, who is 2-1 with a 4.05 ERA in three career starts at Miller Park. He is also 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA in two starts at the Brewers' previous home, County Stadium. Colon has gone 1-0 with a 2.00 ERA in his last three starts and has allowed more than three earned runs just once in 12 outings this season.

BOTTOM LINE is - The Mets arrive in Wisconsin riding high, after snapping a nine-game losing streak to the Pirates with a 6-5, 10-inning victory Wednesday night. Fresh off that win, and ready for this four-game set, I like the momentum to carry over, and Colon to do his job.

Your Thursday freebie is the Mets and Brewers to hold Under the total.

New York did score 6 last night in their 6-5 extra-inning win at Pittsburgh, but prior to that outburst, the Mets had been held to just 2 runs total in their last 3 games.

Mets starter Bartolo Colon has an ERA of 2.00 for his last 3 starts, and for the season he has allowed more than 3 runs only once in his 12 starts.

Jimmy Nelson of the Brewers is coming off a shaky outing his last trip to the mound, but prior to that Nelson went 2-1 over 6 starts with a 2.66 ERA.

Nelson is also 1-1 with and under 2 ERA in his 3 career starts against the Mets.

I have a feeling the pitchers will be sitting the hitters down in order more than a few times tonight.

Mets and Brewers to play Under the total.

My Bonus Play for tonight is on the New York Yankees against the Angels, who are in from Anaheim as part of a seven-game road trip that started in Pittsburgh and finishes up in the Bronx.

The Halos lost their first three in Steeltown, and it got worse each game. The Angels allowed five, six and then 12 runs. They were outscored 23-11 in the Interleague series against the Bucs. I guess that's understandable, since the Bucs ranks second in the bigs - first in the National League - with a .277 batting average.

But now they take on a team that ranks fourth with home runs belted at home, as the Yankees have gone yard 42 times in the Boogie Down.

Don't be surprised to see Carlos Beltran have a series against Angels pitchers. Over his last 19 games, Beltran is batting .352 with eight home runs and 22 RBIs.

Add in the fact the Angels have lost eight straight in New York and 14 of their last 17 visits to the Bronx, and this one spells trouble.

Don't worry about listing pitchers, take the Yankees.

Indians vs. Mariners Indians
+123 at BETONLINE

10* FREE MLB PICK (Indians +123)

Cleveland is worth a look here in Thursday's series finale against the Mariners. Indians starter Josh Tomlin is simply not getting the respect he deserves. He's 8-1 with a 3.54 ERA and 1.098 WHIP in 10 starts. He's been at his best on the road, where he's 4-0 with a 2.93 ERA and 0.867 WHIP in 4 starts. Seattle will counter with Nate Karns, who is coming off a miserable start last time out, giving up 7 runs on 8 hits and 5 walks in just 4 innings at Texas. Indians are 13-4 in their last 17 road games after 2 or more losses and Tomlin is 13-1 in his last 14 starts against the money after a team loss. Give me Cleveland +123!

Nationals vs. White Sox Nationals
-124 at BETONLINE

Jack's Free Pick Thursday: Washington Nationals -124

The Washington Nationals are surging right now having won seven of their last nine games overall. Now they take on reeling Chicago White Sox team that has lost five straight. The Sox have a battered bullpen right now after giving up a combined 21 runs the past two days to the Nationals.

That's bad news for them because Miguel Gonzalez only averages 5.5 innings per start. Gonzalez is 0-1 with a 4.09 ERA and 1.545 WHIP in six starts this season. He has faced the Nationals once in his career, giving up six earned runs and two homers in 5 innings of a 4-7 loss. That equates to a 10.80 ERA.

Gio Gonzalez is having a fine season for the Nationals, going 3-4 with a 3.94 ERA and 1.281 WHIP in 11 starts, including 2-1 with a 3.48 ERA and 1.129 WHIP in five road starts. He has posted a 1.65 ERA in his last three starts against the White Sox, giving up just 3 earned runs in 16 1/3 innings.

The Nationals are 7-2 in their last nine road games. Washington is 6-1 in its last seven interleague road games. The Nationals are 20-8 in their last 28 vs. AL Central opponents. The White Sox are 6-20 in their last 26 overall. Chicago is 1-8 in its last nine interleague home games. Bet the Nationals Thursday.
