Illini,

This passage in Jeremiah 10 is oft misused to refer to Christmas trees. Close inspection shows that that passage is talking about cutting down trees and using the wood to carve wooden idols.

1. Christmas and Christmas Trees didn't exist in Jeremiah's time
2. Talks about carving/idol walking/legs (v4,v5
3. Talks about carving/idol talking (v5)
4. Talks about idol being born (v5)
5. Talks about idol looking like it can do evil/good (v5)
6. Talks about idol wearing clothes (v9)
7. Hebrew word for tree is the same for wood
8. A parallel/similar passage in Isaiah 44:12-28 makes it even more clear:

12 A blacksmith works with his tool and forges metal over the coals. He forms it with hammers; he makes it with his strong arm. He gets hungry and loses his energy; he drinks no water and gets tired. 13 A carpenter takes measurements; he marks out an outline of its form; he scrapes it with chisels, and marks it with a compass. He patterns it after a man, like a well-built man, and puts it in a shrine. 14 He cuts down cedars and acquires a cypress or an oak. He gets trees from the forest; he plants a cedar and the rain makes it grow. 15 A man uses it to make a fire; he takes some of it and warms himself. Yes, he kindles a fire and bakes bread. Then he makes a god and worships it; he makes an idol and bows down to it. 16 Half of it he burns in the fire— over that half he eats meat; he roasts a meal and fills himself. Yes, he warms himself and says, ‘Ah! I am warm as I look at the fire.’ 17 With the rest of it he makes a god, his idol; he bows down to it and worships it. He prays to it
Are yule logs okay too?

The exact same degree of "sad" as allowing a 6 year old child to believe in The Tooth Fairy.

What harm does it do? Them being less than "accurate" with the day they celebrate whatever? How does it impact your personal existence Illini?

You wanna sit them (and that 6 year old) down adminiter a "lesson" to them and shatter their illusions? For what gain?

Rip from them a few moments of joy here in the House of Pain for what? to show off "Wisdom"?

Which would you consider more valuable?

That little bit of Happiness for them or one's Ego getting a little snack? A snack like an egg ball

Nigerian+egg+roll.JPG

that leaves one hungry 4 seconds after downing it but the price for which was ripping away joy from a wide eyed 6 year old or from a god only knows how many Christians whose celebration of whatever on an "incorrect day" has no impact on your life whatsoever?

To me, it's all about truth. When I learned the pagan roots of Christmas and Easter, it was eye opening to me. And no, I take no comfort in the Roman Catholic Church saying they cleansed those holidays and made them Christian. That is bullshit. People can celebrate whatever they want, even a holiday that does nothing but stress people out and cause them to buy all kinds of shit they can't afford. But if you wanna call it a celebration of the birth of Christ, that is a lie. I normally don't bother with conversations such as these. But people that go to Starbucks and demand Merry Christmas be on their coffee cups really need to do a little research. Sometimes, truth is stranger than fiction.

Yeah but see its always been like this Illini, and I don't mean this disrespectfully in the least & if you can believe that truth then look at it objectively you'll know this is true: Pagans, Druids, Devil Worshipers they always walk around with this Holier Than Thou aire about them with the total point of their existence being to engage others in religious debate so they can hear themselves talk and get a chance to show off how much smarter they are than everyone that believes differently than they do.

All I am suggesting is evolution Illini, a rising up out of the cesspool of organized religion because Love (Compassion & Grace) Wins so handicapping the "contest" at all is only outdone for complete pointlessness by debating the matter, trying to educate on exact historical realities of the deal or even wasting your energy at all on concern with such trivial matters as whether a day they celebrate whatever is "accurate" or not.

Just let them have whatever Joy they can find here Illini. You'll find more Happiness yourself if you do.

Knew people would turn this into a religion thing .. Sad

Santa, Christmas Trees, Lights, etc .. are more than the Religion part ... it's the Joy of it.. for ALL

Yes I know what Christmas is ... and what they say it is ....

But I feel it's not 100% a religious thing ....more of a cultural thing. Because there are Many non-Christians that celebrate it in some way or another.

In the War on Christmas consumerism won and Jesus lost.

The shopping mall benefited as much as anyone.

Jesus hasn't lost anything, just a storm of whiny attention whores right now. It'll pass. Forecast on the Horizon is that they'll shut the fuck up because people are growing utterly exhausted by their crybaby tantrums. whiners whining will come to = immediate backlash, literal online crucifixion. Jesus is just chilling in a corner right now. waitin' for the weather to break.

I believe in the substitutionary atonement of Christ on the cross for my sins. That's what being a Christian is, nothing more and nothing less. I believe true Christianity has always been underground, but cannot be found in any other way than through the Scriptures.

I won't disagree with this, it has been a Huge economic impact for retailers ... nothing wrong with a little Gift giving... I might have fell for this back in the day, because
That's how I was brought up. But now it's a couple of gifts .... for the Wife, and Grand kids .

I Enjoy the Lights , decorations, tree and FOOD :)

Even though I am Catholic, I'm not religious at all ... ( and won't get into Why ) * not looking to fight ... lol

I just like to see the Smiles on kids faces ... I like the different Bright Lights ... the Displays ... etc.. ( even throw a little Snow in the Mix )

Search for whatever you like then Illini. The answer is "in your Heart" has been all along why do you think kids behave as they do Illini?, As bliss-filled creatures full of Love...before they are taught to hate and fear? Why do you think the dude said "Be Like Children"? Illini? Its because you got here your Heart & Mind was free of clutter Illini but then you buried that in Knowledge.

And see?

What I am saying Illini? What the FOCK is substitutionary fuggin atonement? Rhetorical Question Illini I don't wanna know I don't care because it completely doesn't matter. It might as well be a GospelRock band comprised of Water Moccasins Illini. Point is ya'll just wanna hear yourselves using big words Illini.

Just experiment with being like children Illini, for one month. Thats All. Climb Trees Illini, go hang out at a specific friend's house everyday, get up before the break of dawn Illini and ride a stingray bicyle to the beach. regardless of how far the Beach is away from you Illini. Climb onto the roof of the school Illini.

Oh wait...don't do that last thing Illini.

I forgot what time it was.

If you'll go and completely be Like that child that you were when you got here Illini for just one month you'll extricate yourself out the cesspool and never ever return to that boring mundane quicksand hole.

It pisses me off because it's a vocal minority that is getting their way. If one doesn't like it, move on. Do we have to like every single thing? If someone is offended by a nativity display - don't look.

your right fair warning but i am guilty as charged , a guy closeby my neighborhood has a Frosty the Snowman in the nativity scene, to each his own i suppose but i have this guy marked , we pass ways often , soon i will be either cutting him off in traffic at the intersection nearby our dwellings or I'm gonna ''accidentally'' bump into him turning in a shoulder into him at the convenience store we both go stop at locally.. i'll have 'God-smack" playing on the iPod and hoping for a stupid look or comment from him so i can give him a dirty fucking beating.. but really i should just let it go

"There are many things from which I might have derived good, by which I have not profited, I dare say, Christmas among the rest. But I am sure I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round -- as a good time: a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time: the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. And therefore, though it has never put a scrap of gold or silver in my pocket, I believe that it has done me good, and will do me good; and I say, God bless it!"
