Depression is a physical disease. it just happens to affect the brain. You cant understand it cause you dont have it, you may not understand how somebody with Alzheimers can forget stuff either.

I guess they kill themselves when it overpowers them. Like if somebody was caught on fire, the natural response would be to jump in a body of water if it was possible. They are just looking for relief. Sad, but not rare either

Depression can (in my experience) come and go and has various degrees. It can seem gone completely at times and may be diagnosed as some other type of mood disorder. Alcohol is the number 1 go to relief for many and that leads down a spiraling path even when sober for a long period of time. I think seniors are a high risk group, but not the only ones that suffer.

A common factor many times is the medications they are prescribed.

[h=1]Suicide rising across the US[/h]More than a mental health concern

[h=3]Overview[/h]
Suicide is a leading cause of death in the US. Suicide rates increased in nearly every state from 1999 through 2016. Mental health conditions are often seen as the cause of suicide, but suicide is rarely caused by any single factor. In fact, many people who die by suicide are not known to have a diagnosed mental health condition at the time of death. Other problems often contribute to suicide, such as those related to relationships, substance use, physical health, and job, money, legal, or housing stress. Making sure government, public health, healthcare, employers, education, the media and community organizations are working together is important for preventing suicide. Public health departments can bring together these partners to focus on comprehensive state and community efforts with the greatest likelihood of preventing suicide.

the US loses approx 400 doctors to suicide each year.
