Kuwait was actually invented by "Great Britain" as a buffer to reduce sea access(and power) for Iraq when the Brits unassed the area during the breakup of empire.
You can see the same kinda arbitary straight lines in Africa if you look at an atlas as France, Britain etc unassed their colonies.
Theres a small strip of land called the Wakhan Corridor at the east end of Afghanistan.
Its a tiny strip of India that the Brits invented (handed over) to separate India and the old Russian (Tsarist) empire.
