Jeez Zit. Where is the moral equivalency in that arguement?
Of course we had to join the war against Hitler. That was not an internal cultural matter. It was a World War.
And killing millions of Jews is hardly equivalent to a culture that allows some old Arab to have a child assigned to be his wife when she reaches puberty.
Sumday's points stand well taken by me. Look in the damned mirror. (And no I don't mean you Zit).
The "moralists" are citing one aberrative instance in Arab culture. There are things that happen daily in our own culture that make me squirm. The priests are the convenient target but the list of evil behaviours could go on for pages. There are regularly rulings by the courts in this country that make me squirm as a civil human being.
Judging another culture's age of consent or how marriages are arranged is just another example of false American hubris. And I don't want anything to do with it.
You said:
"It's none of our business how other cultures in other countries conduct themselves."
I'm saying that when other cultures violate basic human rights, it is
the rest of the worlds' business.
Age of consent is one thing, but raping an 8 year old is another.
We can argue at what point we should get involved, I'm just saying
that there exists a point where it's a no-brainer - and our moral duty.
