- What had become finally clear to the Bush Admin is what the Defense Intelligence Agency and the CIA have been saying all along. You're either going to have to prosecute the war more aggressively including adding troops to the region or you're gonna have to withdraw.
What clearly was not working was more of the same, i.e. 130,000 troops in a shooting gallery with not enough manpower to pacify the country leading to mopre insurgency.
What disturbs me about the option they have chosen - to prosecute the war more aggressively, they have not added the troop strength, either thru obstinance or political/moral cowardice.
Based on what it took to pacify post WWII Germany which was a homogeneous society more aligned with the West than Iraq is, we would need 400,000 troops in Iraq to pacify it. If they're gonna prosecute the war, they need to do it right.

Why does it not surprise me that a lefty would called a military operation that our troops are CURRENTLY involved in a "caper" as if it was some sort of stunt they orchestrated. You can hate Bush and disagree with the decision to go into the Iraq war, but once we are engaged are OUR forces are being shot at, then it is a battle and you are either for our guys or not. These insurgents are not fighting us because we are an imperial force that is planning to stay there and control their government etc... Hell, Alawi the acting IRAQI prime minister is the one who wants us in there. We didn't go in April because we didn't have any new Iraqi forces trained to go in with us and put some Iraqi's in the line of fire. We are trying to use our military combat power and strength to help the new IRAQI government clean out these terrorist insurgents who don't want to see freedom and democracy emerge in Iraq. They don't want freedom, they want a radical Islamic theocracy. Yes, many Iraqis want us to leave but the majority are not taking up arms against us because they understand they need us until their own military and law enforcement infrastructure can be established.
Why didn't French "insurgents" attack us after D-Day...why didn't Kuwaiti's attack us after we invaded Kuwait??? We liberated Iraq from a brutal totalitarian dictatorship under Saddam Hussein...forget the WMD excuse, forget whether you think Dick Cheney and Halliburton wanted oil, in the end Saddam and his sons will not continue to rule in Iraq and some form of representative government with a constitution and rights for the people will be in place. Any military man worth his salt would tell you we had to conduct an operation to clean out Fallujah. No elections could be held there until we had cleaned it out. There is no doubt we will win this battle. I am praying for a swift victory and for as many of our guys to make it out alive as possible.

I think I know where eek is coming from.
I have perhaps known 200 or so Americans in my life and generally found them to be positive, peaceable folks. Perhaps 80 to 100 Muslims ditto. 50 or so Jews ditto. 10 Russians ditto. 20 Germans ditto. 30 Bulgarians ditto. 40 French ditto........
In other words, people are pretty much the same the world over, generally peaceable and fine to get along with. I don't see any value in labelling all Americans as dolts just because I think you've elected one President. All but one of the Germans I've met were thoroughly ashamed of the Nazi period in their history.
What I don't like is any country that takes aggressive action toward another one without good cause, or "hypes up" the just cause beforehand with questionable intelligence and so on.
