RIO DE JANEIRO — The water quality controversy surrounding the Rio Olympics extended to the indoor Aquatics Center on Thursday when an Australian swimming coach refused to let his athletes practice in the main Games training pool due to fears of infection.
Michael Bohl, one of the leading coaches on Australian team, became concerned when he saw the training pool in Barra da Tijuca become “cloudy” and “soupy” during the afternoon, less than two days before the start of the swimming program.
Bohl’s group, which included world champion Mitch Larkin and butterflyers Emma McKeon and Grant Irvine, had booked a session in the training pool and would have had uninterrupted use of it. Instead, they switched to the far busier main competition pool before undertaking their laps.
“That pool looked really cloudy so rather than risk an eye or ear or nose infections we came in here (to the main pool),” Bohl told reporters. “People were swimming in it but I just thought for these guys — it started out nice in that pool, but all of a sudden as (time) wore on the water just got really soupy looking.”
Bohl contacted officials from world swimming governing body FINA, and claimed that he had been told the situation would be investigated.
According to Australian media group News Limited, Australian team officials will seek assurances from Olympic chiefs as to what measures will be taken to ensure there is no repeat of Thursday’s saga.
Bohl said he had no issue with the “pristine” water quality of the main pool that will be used for the actual races.
However, the state of the training pool is also of importance ahead of Saturday’s commencement of the meet, as it will be used by athletes to prepare for their races.
Previously, water quality issues at the Olympics had been restricted to pollution problems in the Guanabara Bay, where the rowing, sailing and open water swimming events will take place.

Australians having a Rough Go of it. I hope that they can somehow get their own independent testing of water for infection cuz IOC will lie.

Cuz IOC dealing with an unprecedented level of fuckups/complaining, IOC might say "Water is Good".

How Insane is is to train your whole LIFE to get to the Olympics then have to deal with what these athletes have put upon them here?

To have to fear (stress) over Infectious Disease, Potential Robbery, Gunfire heard, have to buy and assemble Tables & Chairs, Buy and Install parts to finish installation of a toilet within a partially constructed Bathroom, Drywall and Tape for walls and holes in the floor?

The Olympic road race is currently winding its way towards the finish line, but according to multiple reports from the scene, there was a loud explosion from the finish line area.It appears that the local bomb squad showed up and performed a controlled explosion to detonate an “unattended bag.” No injuries or casualties have been reported, and everything appears to be under control.

Rio de Janeiro (AFP) - Police shot a mugger near the stadium where the Rio Olympics opening ceremony took place and a woman was killed close to another Olympic site, police said Saturday.
The violence on Friday highlighted the task facing an unprecedented force of 85,000 soldiers and police deployed to secure the Olympics.
Rio police said in a statement that a man was mugging people near the Maracana stadium when he was intercepted by one of the police officers sent from another area of Brazil to Rio as part of the huge reinforcements.
"The man was carrying out assaults when a military police officer... shot him," the statement said.
Hours earlier, an architect was killed while driving by one of the main entrances to the Olympic Boulevard, a redeveloped port area that now hosts the Olympic flame and has become a major tourist attraction.
The woman, 51, was attacked by three armed muggers, police said. She tried to flee and was shot in the head.
The main focus of security is Rio, a city where drug traffickers control large parts of poor neighborhoods.
However, the deployment of troops and police -- double the number used at the 2012 London Games -- also includes the cities of Brasilia, Belo Horizonte, Manaus, Salvador and Sao Paulo, where football matches are being played.

Police: Blast near cycling finish line was controlled explosion.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- A small blast shook the area near the finish line of the men's cycling road race Saturday with about 70 kilometers to go in the race. No one was injured, and the event went on unaffected.
Reporters heard a loud boom on the press tribune and felt the ground shake.

An officer assigned to the event said it was a controlled explosion of an unattended bag. He did not give his name because he was not authorized to speak.
A half dozen military police cordoned off the area. No one was immediately evacuated.
There is a heavy security presence throughout the city amid worries about safety as the Olympics begin.

There have been several bomb scares in the city the last couple weeks. A few blocks of the high end neighborhood of Leblon were shut down two weeks ago when a doorman reported a suspicious package in front of a building. A bomb squad came out and found that the sports bag only contained clothes.

[h=1]Stray bullet flies into equestrian press center[/h] By Caroline Stauffer and Daniel Flynn,Reuters 38 minutes ago

By Caroline Stauffer and Daniel Flynn
RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - A stray bullet cut through the plastic roof of the equestrian media center in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday, alarming journalists and underlining concerns about the host city's ability to guarantee security at the world's biggest sporting event.
No one was injured in the incident. The equestrian venue is sited next to a military complex, though police are still trying to discover who fired the bullet and from where, a spokesman for the Rio 2016 organizing committee said.
"It was a stray bullet and has nothing to do with the Games," Mario Andrada said at a news conference, adding that security around the venue had been increased as a precaution.
Dozens of police and troops patrolled the streets en route to the equestrian complex. The area was not evacuated.
Some of the world's most expensive animals are housed nearby, and the dressage phase of the eventing competition was being held just a few meters away.
The bullet struck around 1 p.m. local (12:00 p.m. EDT), when the press room was crowded at the end of a lunch break.
A spokesman for New Zealand's Olympic team said the bullet had fallen close to where the team's press attache was seated.
"She was sitting down and it went between the door and ceiling above her...," said Rob Waddell, New Zealand chef de mission and an Olympic rowing gold medalist.
He said New Zealand police liaison had advised the team that they were not being targeted, though the incident was still being investigated. New Zealand team members have been advised to stay inside competition venues, he said.
"We continue to assess the situation and look at the security around the venues and also in the village," Waddell said, adding that renowned horseman Mark Todd, who holds five Olympic medals, competed roughly an hour after the incident.
Security is a major concern for organizers of South America's first Olympics. Brazil has deployed 85,000 police, military, and private security personnel for the Olympics, more than double that of London in 2012.
Also on Saturday a bomb squad detonated an unattended backpack near the end of the cycling course.
Killings in Rio and nearby Baixada Fluminense climbed 7.5 percent to 1,518 murders in the first six months of this year compared to the same period in 2015.

RUSSIAS PARAOLYMPIC TEAM HAS BEEN BANNED!!!

were deeply saddened to find that the state-sponsored doping program that exists within the Russian sport regrettably extends to Russia Paralympic sports as well,” said IPC President Philip Craven to a room full of journalists in Rio. “This situation is not about athletes cheating the system, but about a state-run system cheating the athletes,” he added. According to Craven the doping of Paralympic athletes in past competitions has been uncovered in two reports commissioned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Craven went on to say that the State’s ‘thirst for glory at all costs has severely damaged the integrity and image of all sport and resulted in a devastating outcome for the Russian Paralympic Committee.
When questioned about the difference between the IPC and the IOC, which let the individual sports federations decide whether or not to ban the Russian athletes, Craven was quick to point out that the rules that govern the IPC were not the same as the ones which govern the IOC. In this year’s Olympics 118 of the 389 Russian athletes were banned from competing.
WADA, which had asked the IOC to ban all Russian athletes from this year’s events applauded the Paralympic Committee’s decision. “The IPC’s decision to uphold ‘morals over medals’ and stand behind the values of clean, fair, doping-free sport sends an important and encouraging message to the clean athletes of the world”, the entity wrote on its website.

[h=1]Report: Olympic kayaker capsizes after hitting a sofa[/h] San Francisco Chronicle Sat, Aug 6 10:39 PM PDT

Pollutants may not be the only thing that get you in Rio's waters. A Sky News reporter tweeted that an Olympic kayaker on a practice run capsized after hitting a sofa. The Olympic organizers are currently investigating. It would hardly be a shocker if someone did encounter a rogue sofa. Photos of Guanabara Bay in the run-up to the Olympics showed all manner of trash and furniture in the waters. MORE: Rio's waters so full of human sewage, athletes will be swimming in literal crap In fact, it's not the sofas that are the real hazard. The water quality in Rio is so poor that scientists recommended athletes keep their mouths closed to avoid ingesting it. An AP article from last week reported: [A]

Good Lord. Unreal. This alone justified this thread, while I'm impressed thus far that there has not been a Terror Incident and hoping there wont be and feel that Rio is handling this alot better than I anticipated these realities must be shown thus known cuz Mainstream Media is not gonna inform on this, and other things that do not fit their agenda.

Journalism was once, and not to terribly long ago, a Noble Profession reporters were Proud to do and took seriously. Comprised of Ethical Reporters who in essence took an Oath to tell the Truth similar to what Doctors do in their Oath to "Cause No Harm".

Oath of The 5th Estate was "Don't Lie and do not Serve anything but The Truth".....basically.

Journalists of the past would have heaped pain onto the vast majority of those "reporting the news" today. There were very very few who would dare to non-report (omit) Truth. Those foolish enough to try this or to report misleadingly per an agenda or just outright falsely would have been outcasts, made to be unemployable within American Journalism.

Today though, American Mainstream Media is mostly comprised of such people, sellouts devoid of Integrity concerned about Money, advancement and totally unconcerned about The Legacy and Obligation of The 5th Estate.

Have the Golf at Reserva de Marapendi in Barra da Tijuca on your Radar. Too much nasty Green Water right next door to the course. Many Golfers who were concerned about possible birth defects to later born kids of theirs chose not to show up due to the Zika deal. Hopefully RIO is spraying to reduce the mosquito population but if left up to The IOC to handle we know that responsible proactive addressing of this Green Water is likely not to take place.

No, its a Horn.

I think, at least.

Could be a Leach. Upon further examination. Too Low to be a Horn? Plus...maybe they don't have Horns, at all. (Capybara is the name of the rodent....Capyvara, alt spelling)

This is Parzival. He’s a very nice horse. I would give him a carrot. However, if you went to the dressage area at the Rio Olympics this afternoon to give him a carrot, you might not find him there, since he had to leave the dressage competition after a suspected bug bite left him with a “toxic fever.”

Parzival won silver in individual dressage and bronze in team dressage in London (or more accurately, won them for his human overlords), and his rider Adelinde Cornelissen will now have to drop out since the Dutch didn’t bring a spare horse. Our friends at Horse And Hound have more from Rio:
“Yesterday I came to the stables and his cheek was completely swollen and it appeared he was bitten by a spider or a mosquito or something,” said Adelinde. “His body was full of toxic fever [with a fever of] over 40.
After spending the day on liquids, his temperature dropped, and it appears he will be okay. Cornelissen was going to try and ride him in the Grand Prix segment of the team competition, but he just wasn’t feeling it:

“I discussed it with the team vet and we decided we’d give it [the grand prix] a try for the team result,” she added. “But he felt totally empty and I didn’t want to put him through that. He didn’t deserve that, did he?”

Now the water polo pool joins the diving pool by turning green - as officials finally attempt to explain what went wrong

11 August 2016 • 1:41am
The water polo pool at the Rio Olympics has joined the diving pool next to it by also turning from crystal blue to mucky green.
Games officials finally gave an explanation for the dramatic colour change, which has been widely debated across social media, blaming algae.
On Tuesday, the diving pool at the Maria Lenk Aquatic Centre turned a dark green colour, triggering a wide range of theories - and jokes - on social media.
The green diving pool stood in stark contrast to the water polo pool, which maintained its crystal blue colour. However, on Wednesday, it too turned green.
