Bill, he was also saving his own life, had he sacrificed his own life to save those 150 passengers I think he would then qualify, until then lets just all agree that he is one amazing effin pilot.

hero: a man distinguished by exceptional courage and nobility and strength; "RAF pilots were the heroes of the Battle of Britain"

if you go by the definition no he's not a hero.

Sorry pal, but that's a bad definition of a hero.

)n. pl. he·roes 1. In mythology and legend, a man, often of divine ancestry, who is endowed with great courage and strength, celebrated for his bold exploits, and favored by the gods.
2. A person noted for feats of courage or nobility of purpose, especially one who has risked or sacrificed his or her life: soldiers and nurses who were heroes in an unpopular war.
3. A person noted for special achievement in a particular field: the heroes of medicine. See Synonyms at celebrity.

Also I believe that grace under fire is an heroic trait that Capt. Sully exemplified with his water landing. He had seconds to evaluate the situation and decided they couldn't make it back to the airport or the other nearby smaller airfield and so headed for the river. He said one word over the intercom after landing, "evacuate". He walked the aisle twice after everyone was off the plane to make sure. Then he exited.

It sounds like to some of you guys if he had died he would be a hero for not endangering other people's lives on the ground, but since everyone survived he is just a well trained pilot. Hogwash! Capt. Sully was a hero before the water landing as he is a former F-4 pilot in our armed forces!

Everyone's a damn hero these days. How exactly is the pilot of yesterday's US Airways a hero? Is everyone a hero for doing their job now? Don't get me wrong, i'm very glad that everyone made out safely in that accident, but c'mon. Granted he stayed calm and landed the plane well, and i think he deserves a bonus check for surviving a crucial test, but i wouldn't label him a hero. Now if the plane crashed and passengers were out in the river and he were to risk his own life swimming in the river to rescue them, then i'd say he'd be a hero.

In all honesty this is easily the dumbest post of 2009 so let's bookmark it please.

Do you think pilots train to land in a river, lake or ocean? I'm sure they train all the time to cut off the engines of an aircraft and land in a body of water. I'm sure it's a routine maneuver to land a plane with 150 on board into a river.

Seriously, WTF is wrong with you?

Actually, I think you have the dumbest post of 2009 for disagreeing. I 100% disagree with u Enfuego, and 100% agree with the OP.

Hero is used too loosely these days. Pilot had as much to gain as the passengers.....ie saving his own life and theirs

I'm not disagreeing with the hero being used to loosely part. I'm disagreeing with this guy saying this was a routine landing and it was a relatively easy maneuver. Those comments were not thought out well at all.

I guarantee you if anyone here had family members on board that flight, you would be kissing the pilot's ass everyday for the rest of your life...He is a hero...

Re-read the pilot's biography and you will find out about all the work he has done with aviation safety...not many pilot's could have done what he did....

Great Post ! Hero ! This Guy graduated number one in his class at the Air force Academy.
