Just watched the segment on Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel. It is simply nuts right now. Even at the previous peak it has been nothing like this. Now people who are getting into it have serious cash. The speculative bubble is back. Between real estate, crypto, stocks, NFT's, trading cards. They interviewed Kurt Rappaport who owns a huge real estate business in Beverly Hills and is worth hundreds of millions. He bought one of the Honus Wagner T206's for $3.7 million. He said has been offered 2.5 times that. When he transfers cards from his vault to his home he has a security contingent escort him to home in Malibu.

Grand Slam Collectibles has 3 hour long shows on Facebook where he just opens up expensive boxes of cards with autographs and uniform swatches that customers have purchased. He is the guy in the short Twitter clip putting $500K into a backpack and flying in a private jet to the National. I remember it used to be where you had to get lucky to get an autographed card or swatch or get a redemption. Now they sell these Hobby Boxes for hundreds of dollars. People paying huge money to get 5 or 6 autographed cards or uniform swatches.

Are people really paying $1500-$2000 for these Spectra Panini hobby boxes. 4 pack of cards, 4 cards per pack. This is no kid's game. This is serious money. It's like high stakes gambling at the blackjack table. Instead of playing $1500 per hand, you pay $1500 per box trying to hit the jackpot.

My younger son got into collecting cards 2 years ago. He's not in it to make money, just thought it was cool to collect cards.

Since Covid, it has been IMPOSSIBLE for him to find affordable cards. Every time he goes to target, he takes a look and everything is cleared out. We are told that grown man come in every morning and buy packs and packs of cards.

Totally sucks.

I still have a shitload of cards from the 80's and 90's but most arent worth that much. Its funny looking at my 80's baseball cards to see players who became managers, players who died, and old school Atlanta Braves when they really sucked

Target no longer sells cards in the store because there was a gun incident of people waiting in line to buy cards when the store opened. This was covered in the Real Sports piece.

The sports card industry completely exploded when there was worldwide lockdowns combined with free government money. All card values went through the roof but in February/March of 2021, all values tanked. Unopened stuff, individual cards, etc. Everything dropped 50%+

The industry is still very active but most recent investors got in right before the crash and are mega bag holders for the time being.

Good thing this is a "hobby"

My brother has a Son and Step Son, ages 7-12 and yes they couldn't get cards at Walmart or Target if they tried.

Sad these 25-35 year old dorks, clearing out all inventory.

It's all about money to people and always will be, sad the days OVER, when shit was fun.

Same with Sports Betting, watch the Vegas Contests this year with the big overlays.

the + EV dorks, all computer clowns will all team up last second and take away the fun of a big overlay.

I shake my head and move on, use your computer you + EV dork and sell your kids cards.

PS. Most of these guys couldn't get ass, if it was sitting there on a silver platter saying come fuck me!!!

As a long-time collector, I cannot wait for the bubble to burst. The same people are speculating on anything and everything, looking for a quick buck. Hot Wheels, coins, bourbon - you name it.

This is the first year I didn't go to the Chicago National. The easy money has took it over. The card companies and grading companies are guilty also.

I have two cases of Upper Decks from like 89-91. I know the Ken Griffey Jr rookie is in there

Any value? I bought them for my kids, who were like 4 to 6 at the time

Also have a 1961 Topps Roger Maris. Took a bunch of memorabilia to settle a debt

Might be, I have the same ?

I have box sets of MLB Cards, from the late 80's.

If I had to guess, all the dorks love the new NBA shit.
