We are living in strange times.
On a quick trip to the gas station, you might pass dozens of people wearing protective masks and face-coverings. It’s an attempt to not only protect themselves but to protect others. You might also see dozens of people who don’t bother.
Sadly, a new study reveals that only about half of us are wearing masks — about 55% total. There are quite a few theories about why that is. Some would say it’s because of American independence and resistance to authority, others would chalk up to sheer ignorance. At least one doctor has a different view.
“I think people are hesitant to wear masks due to our culture and humans are used to using their faces to express emotions and communicate,” says Dr. Henry Redel, the Chief of Infectious Disease at Saint Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ. “It is a big change. Cultures in Asia, where respiratory viruses have caused epidemics in the past, have adapted culturally to the practice and had better results during this pandemic. I think the American public can, too.”
Dr. Redel says the cultural shift does need to happen soon.
He argues that 100% of people in public need to wear masks, and the more protective the better. A cloth mask is far superior to not wearing a mask at all, although he says it is only about 30% effective at stopping the droplets that cause coronavirus and the resulting illness COVID-19 to spread.
“The more masked people in public, the less opportunity for the virus to spread,” he says. “Much of the spread comes from asymptomatic hosts, so masking even without symptoms is still protective. A cloth mask decreases the amount of virus that is able to spread from person to person, and is better than wearing no mask at all.”
“The health of their fellow citizens and the general public is the best reason,” he explained further. “By wearing a mask you can protect the people around you, family, friends and the general public. Not everyone is healthy and many people have medical conditions and impaired immune systems. If we all want to get back to ‘normal’ then wearing a mask is the way to do it and it shows consideration for our communities.”
Study after study indicates that masks can help.
One study found that masks help when someone coughs near you, which releases as many as 3,000 droplets.
Another study found masks have a meaningful impact on the spread of the virus.
Education can help.
When you know one cough can spread that many droplets, it is not at all wise to go out in public without a mask where people might be coughing near you.
It’s not a tough decision. Wear a mask. It’s the doctor’s order.
