I just hope he tees off

SOUTHPORT, England -- Defending British Open champion Padraig Harrington cut short another day of practice because of a sprained right wrist, raising serious questions about whether he'll be able to tee off in the opening round Thursday.

Harrington has no trouble on the driving range, but he managed only three shots on the course at Royal Birkdale before deciding the pain was too great.

He walked the rest of the back nine with Woody Austin, limiting himself to chipping and putting. Harrington has gotten in only nine holes of actual practice since hurting his wrist Saturday swinging into an impact bag.

Asked where he would be if this wasn't the British Open, Harrington smiled and said, "Home."

he's not going to tee off would be my guess

Afterwards he admitted that he was not 100 percent certain to make his scheduled appearance on Royal Birkdale's first tee just before 8am on Thursday.

"The decision will be mine. I cannot say anything at the moment other than I will be making a strenuous effort," he said.

"I will be apprehensive about hitting any shot. I'll certainly be apprehensive about hitting out of the rough."

Harrington, who suffered the wrist injury at the weekend, had started the day in a much more positive frame of mind.

"It felt stronger and I was fine warming-up," he said. "I didn't feel any shots - I hit drivers and I had no problem taking divots.

"But on the course the first six-iron hurt. I was surprised."

He added: "I have to hope it won't be like that tomorrow and it's an injury that as every day goes by we expect to get better."

notes

The par 70, 7,173-yard Royal Birkdale layout has been lengthened by 155 yards since American Mark O'Meara won in 1998, with the changes mainly to bunkering and mounding to tighten the course and make it a more strategic test.

"This is the toughest Open course that I've played," said South Africa's Masters champion Trevor Immelman.

The weather will play a major factor as it always does on links courses and the forecast is for blustery conditions with some rain, clouds and sunny spells for the next few days, clearing up on Sunday.

(OMEARA SHOT EVEN PAR IN 1998)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I think all is set for perhaps a windier championship than we've had in years," said Dawson, the chief executive for the R&A, golf's governing body outside the U.S. and Mexico. "The forecast seems to be moving the wind speeds up slowly but surely, and I think we're going to have a bit of breeze for once, which is good to look forward to."
"If it stays like this, the winning score could be double digits over par," said Ron Levin, who is caddying for Fredrik Jacobsen.
"Yeah, this is all you would want," said Masters champion Trevor Immelman. "In my opinion this is the toughest golf course I've played on the Open rota. It's very demanding off the tee. ... This is going to be a great test this week, especially with some of the weather that's been forecast. The guy who wins this tournament on Sunday is going to be very deserving of it."
"So much depends here at Birkdale on the weather, as we know from past Open Championships," O'Meara said. "In '98, the weather was pretty severe, and the scoring reflected that. I think this week a lot depends on what the wind does and how severe it blows. If it doesn't blow that hard, even though the rough is a little bit deeper this year because it was a little wetter of a spring, I imagine these players, as good as they are, will shoot some pretty low scores.
"If the wind blows, even-par will be a good score come Sunday afternoon. The weather is really what the factor is at any Open Championship, especially here at Birkdale."
i hope he tees, and his statement today about giving himself a 50% chance of finishing the 1st round is encouraging (for us that are fading him)
I'd say Badds is probably 50/50 to make the cut. He has the skills to do very well, but he's also inconsistent and like you said, has a bad track record.
I only faded Harrington in one matchup and hopefully they don't count it as no action if he tees off and WD's shortly after.
"Harrington said it was 75 percent likely he would at least tee off, but put his chances of making it through the first round at only 50 percent".
That was the quote from sportsline, so it sounds like he'll at least tee off.
If you still have a chance to fade Padraig do so. He has yet to hit out of the rough.. wait til he misses a shot in the deep stuff.
I hate myself for withdrawing all but 50 bucks from my account. I seriously would bet my durango on ANY OF the padraig matchups including the one vs kim. I watched a video of his tee shot today .. and wow
The books are praying for a miracle withdraw.
