computer,
you must be rich and live on high mountain somewhere, becuase you should care about wal-mart. If they have 1 million employees and just half make a unlivable wage-then it effects you and your tax dollars and the price you pay for health care. They should chage thier health plan name to Healthy Families becasue thats what all the families are on-( we pay for that govt program to) And the workers are not on strike to gain more, they are just trying to keep what they had in the last contract.
So as long a business can bring you low prices you are happy- so if they are using kids in china paying them 12 cents an hour and 13 hour days -why should you care you are happy and getting low prices on those shoes

1. Our tax dollars don't go to anyone in the USA anyway. We support other countries with most of our tax dollars. Our Government will feed a hungry person in China before it will feed one in New York.

2. If you don't like the Job conditions, don't work for the company. Use one of the government programs that I pay for to get a little better education so you don't have to work at Wal-Mart.

3. What people make in other countries is of no concern to me.

4. We are the least educated Country in the World when it comes to educating people for a Career. I can list you 50 Psyc Majors that are either selling insurance or real estate. Just recently, my firm interviewed a young lady for a receptionist position that graduated in June from a well known college with an English Degree. We could not even consider hiring her because she could not even work a simple multi-line phone system. With an English degree, what kind of career do you think she will have? Teaching is about it, and everyone knows that teaching doesn't pay what it should.

We educate people to be educated, not to be an economically productive member of society.

5. Maybe the workers don't deserve what they had before?

6. An increase of $5 to $15 per week in thier Healthcare cost portion is very reasonable. I wish I only had to pay that much.

7. The last time I checked, my taxes went down.

It is obvious that this strike is very "close" to you. You live in San Diego and either you or someone close to you is deeply affected by this strike. I hope everything turns out OK for you.

NoTax:

I'm in Richmond which is Central Virginia. August is the only bad month for humidity. Virginia is just an average state weather wise. Not much snow (will get the occassional 12" snow at one time every 5 years or so) and usually not too many cold days in a row. The spring and fall are GREAT (Sleep with the windows open weather). Summer is usually in the low to mid 90s. Not many days over 100.

Richmond does has the highest Air Fares in the Country. So if you like to fly a lot, you want to either live on the east coast (Norfolk, Va Beach) or up North (Tyson's Corner, Arlington).

Housing is reasonably priced at the moment and the Job Market is pretty good.

Good luck if you do move.

Anything in Northern Virginia is Expensive! Most of the people that work in Washington, DC live in Northern Virginia. Probably what you are used to in California.

The Western Part of the State (Roanoke, Salem) is Inexpensive. If you moved here, you might have to become a Virginia Tech fan.

The Coast if fairly expensive. A lot of military people.

Richmond is probably about average. I paid $185K for my 2300 SF house last November. Good neighborhood and a good school system.

If you are retired, you may want to look at Nottoway, Lunenburg or Mecklenburg Counties. Cost of living is extremly cheap, but the umemployment rate is about 20%. My Mom paid $64K for 1800 SF in Lunenburg about 3 years ago. These counties are 1-2 hours Southwest of Richmond.

There are all kinds of websites about cost of living in different states. If you go to Google and search "cost of living" you might find what you are looking for.

ITS NOT ABOUT 5-15 DOLLARS, THEY WOULDNT STAY ON STRIKE FOR 3 MONTHS DURING THE HOLIDAYS FOR THAT --I HOPE NO ONE OUT THERE TRULY BELIEVES THAT
ALSO I THINK EVERONE GOES TO COLLEGE TO HAVE A CHANCE TO MAKE MORE MONEY- THAT IS WHAT IS PREACHED TO US A KIDS -IF YOU DONT CONT. YOUR EDUCATION THEN YOU WONT BE SUCCESSFULL OR HAVE STATUS.
AND THE REASON THAT WOMEN IS TAKING THAT JOB IS BECUASE WE DONT CREATE GOOD JOBS FOR THEM -ALL THE JOBS IN AMERICA PAY SHITTY, AND WE CONT. TO LET COMPANYS LOWER THERE WAGES A BRING THOSE TYPE OF JOBS TO YOUR TOWNS.

IM NOT INVOLVED IN THE STIKRE JUST HATE CORPERATE GREED.
THERE ARE NO WALMART SUPERSTORES IN CA AND EVERYTIME THEY TRY TO BRING ONE HERE WE WILL FIGHT IT.
LIKE IN THE SAN DIEGO AREA THEY TRIED TO BRING ONE AND WE PASSED A SQUARE FOOTAGE LAW TO KEEP THEM OUT--AND IN MARCH WE ARE PUTTING IT TO A VOTE TO KEEP THEM OUT FOR GOOD BECAUSE WE BELEIVE IN LIVABLE WAGES AND BENIFITS FOR ALL- UNION OR NONUNION JOBS

12.08 is a very fair wage for a grocery store worker. It is probably a little too fair. If they are working part time they are lucky to have any benefits. Most employers dont give any benefits at all to their part time workforce.

Findaway:

1. You would rather have 200 extra people unemployed and pay for their umemployment than to have Wal-Mart come in and give them jobs and lower your cost on every day items?

2. Since you are against Corporate Greed, can I assume that you own no stocks, no mutual funds and no 401K and that all of your money is in CD's or money market accounts makeing 1% a year?

3. My beef with the education system is that why do colleges offer degrees in stuff you can not make a career out of? Why waste a person's time if you are not going to prepare them for the real world?

4. In the Richmond Metro Area we have 3 Super Wal*Marts, 2 Costcos, 2 Sams's and 1 BJ's. We also have the Krogers' and the Food Lions'. They all seem to be competing and doing very well. None have gone out of business since the Wal*Marts came to town. Even at the risk of lower wages, lower prices are better for the economy as a whole.

5. If everyone in California shares your economic view on things, it is no wonder that the California economy is in such bad shape.

6. My final note on this subject. If you would rather pay more money for the exact same things that I buy, then more power to you. You are the one that is rich and lives on the high mountain.

Computer Guru,

I am one of those people that pay 5.89 for a bottle of shampoo at a drug store rather than shop at Wal-mart. Their workers aren't worth a damn. I have yet to regret the decision especially when my bro-in-law is charged for white peaches but he actually had bananas.

They've screwed me over 3 times and I decided to wash my hands of them.

I go into Walgreens and get the stuff I need and checkout all in 20 minutes. In Wal-mart the problem is more wading through those long welfare lines than anything else. Going to Wal-mart is an hour commitment minimum.

I crunched some #'s and the money I might save at Wal-mart on certain items is negligible when compared to the time I save by shopping elsewhere.

Just my opinion

I see some trickery with the numbers here. 75% of the employees are part time. Average pay is only $12 an hour. Assuming the part timers make at most $7-8 an hour, the full timers likely make a pretty decent wage counting benefits.

Findaway, what is the average wage for the full-time employee?
