156 WAR for Mays, 84 for Griffey. OPS+ 156 to 136 (and 160 for Mays when looking at the same number of games). There is virtually no way any difference between the 90s compared to the 60s can account for that.

Yeah, I guess so.

Mays and Mantle easily the top two, clearly well ahead of Griffey. Cobb and Speaker most likely, depending on era adjustment. Oscar Charleston, too. Trout will pass him soon. About seventh all time seems right for someone who did so little after 30.
Couldn't agree more.

Do you all think Trout eventually overtakes everyone on the list?

Trout has been an MVP candidate for eight years now. Mays was at that level every year from age 23 to 35, then a few more at All-Star level. Still needs about five more years as one of the best players in the game. Griffey is the perfect example of why the odds are against that.

Griffey in the 90's, put up some Homerun and RBI numbers that were unbelievable, he certainly earned his spot in HOF, I can't compare to Mantle and guys previous.

Imagine the contract he'd get now if he was like 28, in today's game based mainly on homeruns.

It would be as high as Trout or any other !

Mays and Mantle are the best center fielders I have ever seen.....end of story

In their time they were....different era. They faced the same pitcher the whole game and didn't see 100+

The speed of athletes today put those guys to shame. Different time, that's all. Imagine if Griffey, Trout, Bonds, and many others played back then

Trout's the richest, that's for damn sure

Just tougher for guys to dominate into their 30's now obviously as the PED crackdown appears to have shortened primes and just the competition is obviously more fierce than ever given global commercialization of the sport.

Different era's is a pointless argument. No way anything can be proved one way or another. Who is to say Willie Mays wouldn't be the best CF if he played in the modern era?

Statically is about the only way to prove who is best....Willie Mays Greatest Center fielder of all time hands down.

Until the mound was lowered after 1968, that was the era with the most advantages to pitchers since before World War I. Higher mound, no thin handled bats, no body armor, different balls, parks generally larger, no trips to Colorado or Arlington, regular double headers, etc.

The absolute best, and virtually only way, to measure baseball success is in relation to their peers. Mays and Mantle were so far higher above their peers than Griffey, that there is no way any era adjustment could make up for it. They did so far more to help the Yankees and Giants win, than Girffey did to help the Mariners and Reds win. Sports talent does generally increase from generation to generation. But if the 40 years difference is enough to make up for how much better Mays and Mantle were, that means this next generation may have up to 15 center fielders who will be better than Griffey.
