15 Dime Lakers - No way Cleveland wins by as many as it did yesterday, and the Lakers don't duplicate the feat today against the eighth-seeded Jazz. The banged-up Jazz, I might add, and the dependent-on-one-player Jazz to boot. Utah simply has no shot at accomplishing a thing against the Lakers, it's that simple. As bad as the 131-92 drubbing was last year in the finale of the Finals against Boston, is as bad as the Lakers want to start this postseason and erase the painful memory of losing that game. And no better place to start this year's run than at Staples Center, where the Lakers are 16-3 against the Jazz since the arena opened in 1999 and have won the last six in a row between the teams. Bynum is back, Kobe is ready and the Pau adds depth to the paint and scoring column. This is a mismatch made in heaven boys, Lakers roll.
15 Dime Hornets - This might be the most exciting series of the entire first round, a series we might see last-second shots in every outing - and I mean that. The Hornets and Nuggets split the season series at 2 games a piece, so there is confidence there for point guard Chris Paul. And let's be honest, the Hornets had a chance to win every game of the series except the last one - a 13-point home loss - but there were times there I questioned shot selection. Here's where we get the cover in this one: surprisingly, the Hornets play at one of the slower paces in the league, averaging about 87 possessions per game. And while Denver will want to push the tempo, you have to look at which team has the better point guard, who in essence can control the tempo - that would be the Hornets, with Paul. I'm counting on him to slow the tempo and get the Hornets in defensive-mode to keep this close. Take the points.
15 Dime Hawks (First Half) - Not much analysis for a first half bet, but what I can tell you is Atlanta is the team that almost derailed Boston last season during its championship run, and now the goal is much higher. To assure themselves of a statement win over Dwayne Wade and the Heat, the Hawks will need to break out immediately and take the Heat out of the game right off the bat. Look for that to happen right here in Game 1, as Atlanta overwhelms the Heat, and the crowd plays a role in it doing so as well.
5 Dime Cubs - St. Louis is a mere 3-6 in the Wellemeyer's last nine trips to the mound. So even though he’s given up three earned runs or fewer in seven of those nine contests, we have a better chance in this primetime clash by siding with the Cubs. In addition, the Redbirds have dropped four straight Wellemeyer starts on Sundays, so we're much better off with Lilly, who has had his share of success against the Cardinals, with a 6-2 record and a 2.99 ERA in 11 career starts. More impressively, he’s 4-0 the last seven times he’s faced St. Louis. Take the Cubbies.
5 Dime Pirates - The Bucs areplyaing well, the Braves have lost five straight and we have one of the better-performing hurlers going for us today in this one. I'll gladly play the home pup here. Following yesterday’s 10-0 loss to the Pirates, Atlanta has been held scoreless the past 18 innings as Pittsburgh has outscored it 13-0. All the momentum is on our side, as the Braves are in danger of being swept for the second consecutive series. I like our chances with Zach Duke, rather than Javier Vazquez, who has allowed 10 earned runs and totaled 12 innings in his past two starts. Duke has been one of the most dominating pitchers in baseball over the first two weeks of the season, allowing just one earned run in 15-1/3 total innings. Take the home pup.
