WildBill-

I do not know the gaming industry well enough to speak about talent and Borgata attracting it. My point of view was based solely on the idea that IF you pick up the Borgata as it exists today (tables, bars, clubs, rooms, dining establishments, spa, dealers, waitstaff, hosts, etc.) and dropped it in Vegas it would be competitive with a large majority of Vegas properties.

Would you argue that the Borgata in Vegas (ceterius paribus) would NOT be a "top 10" property? If not, what are your top 10?

josephlupo- What do you do at The Borgata? There is no sportsbook so you can't fool and rob the public like you did for years at the Stardust. The words "great" and "bookmaker" can't be used in the same sentence to describe Bob Scucci. Actually, they can't be used in seperate sentences either. When you left for Atlantic City, it would have been great for Las Vegas if you had taken Bob Scucci, Robert Walker, Art Manteris, Kelly Downey, Fred White and Vic Salerno with you. No, forget Fred and Vic. Even a toilet like Atlantic City has some standards.

The Stardust has been a dump for a long time but at least when Scotty Schettler ran the sportsbook, he gave the players a fair shake. Having had the likes of you, Bob Scucci and Robert Walker run it is like letting pre-schoolers loose in the Louvre with crayons and magic markers.

I do have to give you some credit for the futures you used to post. I was always amazed at how you could have half the teams in the NFL at 15-1 or less to win the Super Bowl when most of those teams should have been 15-1 to finish at 8-8 or better. That's going out on a limb. I was also always fond of the -140 on a two team seven point teaser and those fight odds of -450 on the favorite and take back +300 on the dog. Real gambling.

When I left the Stardust in Nov '91 I gave the keys to the Boyd Group groupies. All they had to do was not screw it up. It was all done for them. All the stuff they take credit for was already in place i.e. early line, lottery, handicappers library, etc. and above all REPUTATION. They got the keys to a Caddilac, all they had to do was drive it and don't wreck it. The crew I inherited it from really did the brainwork to start the whole thing. Lefty was a geiuus, way ahead of his time.....ScottyS

Amen to that, something about a book manager who is judged by his bottom line results. Today's managers are only judged by how much trouble they stay out of, how well they play politics, and how many good casino guests the serve and their perceived value to the casino with the book. I worked for a Vegas casino a few years ago and the first exposure I had to internal valuation of the book just stunned me. I can't really say all that we did, but lets just say when it came time to value the book's place in the casino it was all kinds of "touchy feely" things as I called them, and very few along the lines of a simple metric everyone calls "net win". I suppose it was good in a way because if net win was all that mattered management would have fired every single one of those employees in 10 minutes.
