Sweden --1937 deaths

Denmark, Norway and Finland combined---736

They chose not to flatten the curve.
Flattening the curve does not mean fewer infections or deaths, it just spreads them out over a longer timeline.
Perhaps they weren't concerned about capacity of their health care system?
The story isn't done yet. Talk to me in 6 months or a year.

That's true about the "story isn't done yet."

Apparently Sweden has a medical system far more able to handle the crisis than most places. Which may have been a big reason why they were willing to take the path they did, with the understanding that they could adjust & shut things down if it started to get out of hand.

no cure, so I dont see what the medical system can do about it

True, there is no cure. Though it can help to have enough available supplies, test kits, ventilators, staff, etc to handle a rush on their services due to COVID-19 cases, in addition to their usual case load.

If a second wave of COVID-19 comes in winter, flu season, they'll have both to handle at the same time.

Ballsy call by Sweden's politcal/healthcare leaders, pretty much exact opposite of New Zealand. Sweden chose a pragmatic, practical approach. Basically saying to its citizens ; be responsible rather than mandate this responsibility. An important distinction. Quarantine is for the sick, high risk. If there is a second wave, i'd imagine they'd handle it better than other countries. With that said, New Zealand shut her all down real early and it appears is ready to open soon with a pretty clean health report card , no idea of the damage to its economy.

The idea of the shutdown in N America was designed to not overwhelm healthcare (unfortunately happened in New York), it wasnt designed to prevent the population from getting the virus. If we are waiting on a vaccine before opening up? pipe dream. If the epidemiologists r going to trace, test, track with efficiency they should have done it by now, they havent, hence likely not a practical option..

The clock is ticking on the N American economy.....

There are areas in Sweden that the police won’t even patrol due to influx of immigrants that they allowed in. I got a hunch

Swedes (Lofven is their PM), gotta respect a man that can admit a mistake;

“The protection for people in elderly care should have been better,” Lofven said last week. “We need to look closer at what has gone wrong.”

“We don’t have a radically different view,” Foreign Minister Ann Linde said in an interview with Radio Sweden. “The government has made a series of decisions that affect the whole society. It’s a myth that life goes on as normal in Sweden.”

Its crazy that Sweden has had 1/3 the deaths from Covid-19 as New Jersey yet they have the same population.

Seasonal Flu killed more Swede's in 1993 and 2000.

could you post their respective population densities

He wont.

Also won’t admit that Americans are 10x more unhealthy and also had a president tell everyone it was under control and there was nothing to worry about. Does Sweden have that too?

Yes, probably those fat slobs in New Jersey are more unhealthy.

Its too bad our leading Epidemiologists and the WHO both falsely claimed the inaccuracies of this virus for far too long, allowing this to spread from China so quickly.

Shame we didn't have more intelligent resources.

It's funny how you mention unhealthy people.....these unhealthy people are the ones you're trying so hard to protect....when they should be protecting themselves.

I think it is obvious from the numbers that densities effects the spread.

With that said I read an interesting stat on Sweden that will make their numbers better just because of how they live. Forty percent of the people in Sweden live alone. I thought that was very high and very surprising. I would think that logically with some basic social distancing efforts and living alone the spread would be less.

On the flip side their death per population is the 6th worst in the world and rising.

They deliberately chose a path to be less aggressive about flattening the curve. Which will result in more infections and deaths initially, but I'm sure the theory is they will be in roughly the same place as everywhere else when this thing is over, with far less economic damage. The net result being less societal damage on the whole.

People thinking they have some sort of "gotcha" moment by pointing to death rates in April 2020 are intellectually dishonest and/or just not that intelligent. Incapable of looking at the bigger picture.
Not referring to you, just earlier posts in this thread.

These losers are ALWAYS the same. So predictable. Constantly moving the goal posts around. They want to talk about population density and underlying population health only when it helps make their point.

These same idiots want North Dakota to have the same rules as NYC, or point to a resurgence in cases in Hong Kong as if it should impact policy in Texas...but then play the density card when comparing Sweden to NJ. :ohno:

All these doom and gloomers couldn’t have been more wrong on this thing. Now, they’re all gone. They all disappeared like a fart in the wind.
