(253) Carolina Panthers at (254) New England Patriots
The Panthers defense, a unit that had experienced success in the first two weeks of the regular season, was exposed last week in a loss to the New Orleans Saints, in Carolina none the less. After allowing just three points per game versus San Francisco and Buffalo the Saints' Drew Brees had little issue slicing and dicing the Carolina secondary.
The Panther now have to travel to Gillette Stadium to face Tom Brady and the Patriots. The summer and preseason talk about one of the top ranked defensive units in 2016, the Pats, have also been soft to begin the 2017 campaign. New England was fortunate to win last week and has looked defensively vulnerable through a 2-1 start.
The Patriots are led by a 40-year old quarterback that isn't who he once was, period. The defense last season benefited from a soft schedule and career years from a number of their player personnel. This year the situation and a number of injuries has created a different unit and the coaching staff is forced to play softer in the secondary.
Carolina hadn't faced a capable offense until last week and they were soundly beaten. While the Panthers are averaging a mere 15 points per game that figures to improve against the Patriots stop-unit. Cam Newton’s inaccuracy has taken a hit with his recovering shoulder but he figures to be primed for this matchup in New England.
Expect the Bill Belichick staff to challenge Newton with a stacked box and press coverage. Additionally, expect Newton to beat the Pats on occasion with this game plan.
Brady and company figure to put the pedal to the medal after last week’s close encounter with the offensively challenged Houston Texans, who happened to push 33 points to the scoreboard. It is reasonable to expect Newton to be more in sync with his receivers after taking the most practice reps, this week, than he has in the first three weeks of September.
New England has gone OVER the TOTAL at a 7-0 clip in their last seven games
The OVER is 5-0 for Brady and company coming off a straight up win the previous week.
The Over is 8-2 in the Panthers last 10 games as a visitor against a team with a winning record.
