Rams vs Saints

The Los Angeles Rams won the Super Bowl last season.
The New Orleans Saints had a winning record in each of the last five seasons.
Understandably high expectations ushered the franchises into the 2022 season.
But as they prepare to meet Sunday in New Orleans, both the Rams (3-6) and the Saints (3-7) have been hampered significantly by injuries and desperately need a win if they hope to turn their seasons in a positive direction.
"You've got to be more process-oriented than ever before," Los Angeles coach Sean McVay said. "It's easy to say that when things are going well, and now you really get forced to kind of put it to the test."
Things got worse for the Rams this week when star wide receiver Cooper Kupp underwent ankle surgery that will sideline him indefinitely.
"We have to figure out how to accentuate the skill sets of the guys that will be playing," McVay said.
The Rams also lost two starting offensive linemen because of health issues. Tackle Alaric Jackson will miss the rest of the season because of blood clots and guard Chandler Brewer will miss four to six weeks because of a knee injury.
Los Angeles did receive some good news Wednesday when quarterback Matthew Stafford, who had been in concussion protocol, practiced fully.
New Orleans is without former All-Pro wide receiver Michael Thomas due to foot surgery and top cornerback Marshon Lattimore and starting linebacker Pete Werner remained sidelined.
"I told the team, ‘Man, there's got to be a sense of urgency in everything we do," head coach Dennis Allen said. "We've got to get some things corrected, and there has to be a sense of urgency about doing that. And what we've done to this point has not been good enough.
"And so we keep doing the same things and expect it to be different, that's the definition of insanity. So we've got to change the way we prepare, we've got to change the way we get ready to play a game. That's coaches, players, that's all of us because it hasn't been up to the standard that we have here."
After poor offensive performances in consecutive losses to Baltimore (27-13) and at Pittsburgh last Sunday (20-10) Allen pondered benching quarterback Andy Dalton and returning to Jameis Winston, who was sidelined after three games because of a back injury but has been cleared to play.
"We're going to go with Andy," Allen said after practice Wednesday. "We discussed it as a staff. I got an opportunity to talk to both quarterbacks, and I feel like right now, Andy is the direction that we want to go."
Dalton will try to get the offense back on track while playing without a majority of his starting offensive linemen.
Left tackle James Hurst, who was sidelined by a concussion during last week's game, didn't practice Wednesday, nor did left guard Andrus Peat, who missed last week's game because of a triceps injury.
Center Josh Andrews, who moved into the starting lineup when Erik McCoy went on injured reserve last week, missed practice because of illness, as did right tackle Ryan Ramczyk.

Jets vs Patriots

When the New York Jets clashed with the New England Patriots in Week 8, it looked as if the Jets were in prime position to shake a 12-game losing streak against their AFC East rivals.
New York was riding a four-game winning streak, quarterback Zach Wilson was playing with confidence, and the Jets were playing at home -- which happens to be the only place they've been able to win a regular-season game against New England over the past 13 years.
The result? A 13-game losing streak against the Patriots.
However, New York will have another chance to snap the skid when it travels to Foxborough, Mass., on Sunday for a meeting with the Patriots.
Both teams are coming off their bye week.
The Jets (6-3) bounced back from their loss against New England (5-4) with an impressive 20-17 home victory over the Buffalo Bills on Nov. 6.
James Robinson scored his first touchdown as a Jet late in the third quarter against Buffalo. After Tyler Bass' field goal leveled the game at 17-all, the Jets' Greg Zuerlein made good on a 28-yarder with just under two minutes remaining for the winning points.
With the Jets coming off the win and a week of rest, coach Robert Saleh said his team is better than it was the last time out against the Patriots.
"I feel like we've gotten better every week," Saleh said. "It still comes down to being able to execute and do our job and do right longer. You'd like to think with every passing day, you get a little bit better."
Getting better as the season progresses has been something New England has been able to accomplish, as the Patriots have won four of their past five games after a 1-3 start.
The Patriots went into their bye week on a high note following a 26-3 romp over the visiting Indianapolis Colts.
Matthew Judon and Josh Uche headlined a masterclass defensive performance, as they each recorded three sacks. Jonathan Jones blocked a punt and returned an interception 17 yards for a TD as New England prevented the Colts from converting any of their 14 third-down opportunities.
It might be harder for the Patriots to apply pressure against New York, though, as New England coach Bill Belichick noted that the Jets have tuned up their offensive line since the teams last met.
"They played Buffalo -- that's the only game we've seen -- (and they) did a good job defensively against a very explosive Buffalo offense," Belichick said. "Did a good job in the kicking game, protecting the ball, especially their quarterback.
The Sunday game will open a busy stretch for the Patriots, who will play three games in a 12-day span. Following the meeting with New York, New England will visit the Vikings on Thanksgiving before returning home to play the Bills on Dec. 1.l
"We're focused on the Jets right now," Belichick said. "Worry about next week next week.
Defensive lineman DaMarcus Mitchell could miss the beginning of that stretch, as he did not practice on Wednesday due to an illness. Fellow defensive lineman Christian Barmore (knee), safety Kyle Dugger (ankle) and Uche (hamstring) were all limited.
Wide receiver Corey Davis didn't participate in the Jets' practice on Wednesday because of a knee injury. Defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins (elbow) and guard Nate Herbig (shin) also sat out.

Bears vs Falcons

Two of the best rushing attacks in the NFL meet on Sunday in Atlanta, when the Chicago Bears run into the Falcons.
The Falcons are fourth in the league in rushing, averaging 160.4 yards per game, while the Bears average a league-high 201.7.
Atlanta (4-6) has dropped two straight to go from leading the NFC South to second place behind the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-5).
"We're right in the middle of it," Falcons coach Arthur Smith said. "We're not where we want to be. But the reality is we're right in the middle of a playoff race with a conference opponent coming in here -- a game we need to win."
The Bears (3-7) coughed up a lead and lost a 31-30 decision to the Lions last week. Chicago has dropped three straight and six of its past seven games to sink into last place in the NFC North.
Quarterback Marcus Mariota went 19-for-30 passing for 186 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, but he was sacked five times, preventing the Falcons from finding their groove offensively in a 25-15 loss at Carolina on Nov. 10.
Led by Mariota's three carries for 43 yards and Caleb Huntley's 32 yards on five carries, the Falcons ran the ball for 138 yards on 25 touches against the Panthers.
Mariota has completed 61.9 percent of his passes for 1,747 yards with 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions, in addition to rushing for 347 yards and three scores on 63 carries. Tyler Allgeier, who has rushed for 443 yards and one touchdown, and Cordarrelle Patterson, who has 402 yards and five scores, headline the formidable rushing attack.
For the Bears, Justin Fields continued his rise as franchise quarterback in the loss to the Lions.
Despite throwing an interception that was returned for a touchdown, he completed 12 of 20 passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns, in addition to running for 147 yards while scoring on runs of 1 and 67 yards.
Fields has rushed for 325 yards in the past two games, the most by a quarterback in NFL history, besting Lamar Jackson, who ran for 268 for the Ravens on Oct. 13 and 20 during his MVP season in 2019.
Fields may have to take on even more of the running game. Khalil Herbert (643 yards, four TDs) was placed on injured reserve with a hip injury on Tuesday. David Montgomery, who has rushed for 434 yards and two scores on 115 carries, will likely see an increased workload.
"When you're looking at different types of places to go, you take spots for that reason," Bears coach Matt Eberflus said. "The No. 1 spot you look at is quarterback. You study and look at that and I loved what I saw.
"I'm loving what I'm seeing even more since I've been here for this amount of time."
For the Falcons, cornerback A.J. Terrell (hamstring) and safety Erik Harris (foot) were limited in practice on Wednesday, while tight end Feleipe Franks (calf) didn't participate. All three have not been ruled out for Sunday, according to Smith.
For the Bears, guard Teven Jenkins (hip), tight end Cole Kmet (thigh), defensive end Al-Quadin Muhammad (knee) and cornerback Kindle Vildor (ankle) did not practice on Wednesday, while defensive backs Dane Cruikshank (hamstring) and Kyler Gordon (knee) were limited.

Panthers vs Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens would like to pick up where they left off before the bye week.
The Carolina Panthers would just like to pick it up.
The Panthers will hold some momentum going into Sunday afternoon's game in Baltimore.
The Ravens (6-3), who are fresh off an open week, have a three-game winning streak.
"We just have to go play our best game on Sunday and that's what we're going to try to do," Baltimore coach John Harbaugh said.
The Panthers (3-7) have had more time to prepare than they typically do following a Nov. 10 victory against the Atlanta Falcons.
Still, there's a change in the works at quarterback because of yet another ankle injury. Baker Mayfield will return to the starting role despite the team winning its last game. That's because PJ Walker is out with an ankle sprain. Mayfield has been out recovering from a high ankle sprain.
As Cleveland's starting quarterback playing in the same division as the Ravens, Mayfield posted a 3-5 record against Baltimore. He threw 13 touchdowns against nine interceptions in those games.
"We've had some incredible battles with him when he was with the Browns," Harbaugh said. "We know what he's capable of doing. We understand his strengths as a quarterback."
Mayfield said the Ravens always seem to have a full roster of defensive playmakers.
"It comes down to players, it always has," Mayfield said. "They have great players on defense."
The Ravens will try to take advantage of the change, though, as they hope to expand their plus-7 turnover ratio against a Carolina team that has had revolving starting quarterbacks. Sam Darnold will be Mayfield's backup.
"Baker has been in that (division) and familiarity with the Ravens and that defense," Carolina interim coach Steve Wilks said. "We're going to create a good game plan and try to put our guys in position to be successful."
In starting the first five games this year, Mayfield threw for four touchdowns and four interceptions. Wilks said the Panthers have kept the basic scheme on offense. In beating the Falcons, that consisted of plenty of handoffs to D'Onta Foreman 31 times. Foreman produced 130 yards and a touchdown and boosted his yards-per-carry average this season to 4.7.
He had 79 carries and four scores in four games since the Panthers traded running back Christian McCaffrey to the San Francisco 49ers.
Even with a ground game chugging along, it could be hard to combat the well-rested Ravens, who are 16-6 since 2003 when following a week off. They beat NFC South teams Tampa Bay and New Orleans in their last two outings.
"With each game you build confidence, but it's a new week every week," Baltimore rookie center Tyler Linderbaum said. "You're only as good as your last snap.'
Linderbaum has been a steady influence on the offensive line. That has enabled quarterback Lamar Jackson to roll up a career-best 7.4 yards per rushing attempt. The Ravens have the second-best rushing offense in the league with 168.1 yards per game on the ground.
Harbaugh said tight end Mark Andrews is among the players who missed Baltimore's most-recent game who could be ready to be back in action. He has a team-best 42 receptions and five touchdowns.
"Mark is Mark, nothing changed," Jackson said of Andrews back in the main practice mix.
The Ravens might be able to expose Carolina's secondary, which will be without cornerback Donte Jackson, who suffered a torn Achilles in last week's triumph against Atlanta. That could push C.J. Henderson into a starting role. The problems are compounded with Myles Hartsfield, who has started seven games in the secondary, missing Wednesday's practice with an ankle injury.
"We definitely are going to have our hands full," Wilks said.

Browns vs Bills

Here's the scoop: Too much snow in Buffalo forced the NFL to shovel the Bills and Cleveland Browns to an alternate game site. They'll square off in Detroit for their scheduled Week 11 game on Sunday.
The Bills are also scheduled to play at Ford Field on Thanksgiving Day, giving them two games in five days at Detroit.
Historical accumulation measured in feet was forecast for western New York before midday Saturday, creating a string of logistics and safety concerns for the team, league and region.
"Due to public safety concerns and out of an abundance of caution in light of the ongoing weather emergency in western New York, Sunday's Cleveland Browns-Buffalo Bills game will be moved to Ford Field in Detroit at 1 p.m. ET," the NFL said in a statement Thursday. "The decision to move the game from Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y. was done in consultation with the Buffalo Bills and local and state authorities as the region prepares for the storm."
When the teams hit the field Sunday, the Bills (6-3) will look to halt a two-game skid and the Browns (3-6) will attempt to ignite fading postseason hopes. But in the mind of Cleveland starting quarterback Jacoby Brissett, the shift to Ford Field should be a positive.
His last snow game in Buffalo, then as quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts, didn't go so great in a 13-7 loss.
"I don't want to talk about the results of the game," Brissett said when reminded of that cold day when he completed 11 of 22 passes for 69 yards and one touchdown.
Asked how players can deal with so much snow, Brissett said, "I'm from Florida, so no, I wouldn't know. I'm the wrong person to ask. I really won't think about it."
Coaches began needling their own alternate plans on Tuesday when the NFL and Erie County officials began discussing contingency plans.
"We've already started to put a plan in place behind the scenes of what happens if we can't get in Friday, what happens if we can't get in Saturday or to the hotel Saturday evening (where the team stays the night before games) with that being downtown," Buffalo coach Sean McDermott said.
Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said Wednesday, "I wouldn't say (we have) two separate game plans, but when weather is a factor as it might be, you're always thinking about having plays that you might turn to should it be a major factor."
Bills quarterback Josh Allen was a limited practice participant all week but is set to play after not receiving an injury designation on Friday. Allen is still experiencing soreness in his throwing elbow.
Allen has thrown two interceptions in each of the past three games. He did pass for 330 yards and one touchdown in last week against the Vikings, but his turnovers, including a lost fumble late in regulation, were key to Minnesota's comeback for a 33-30 overtime win.
Allen said he has been spending hours daily with trainers and the strength and conditioning staff.
"It'll get to a point where it's back to normal and I don't feel it and don't have to worry about it," Allen said. "But until that time comes, just being smart with it and making sure I'm not doing anything stupid in walkthroughs, not throwing it very hard and just staying in the training room and still getting treatment on it."
Allen has passed for 2,733 yards, 20 touchdowns and 10 interceptions and added 476 yards and four TDs on the ground to help the Bills lead the NFL in total offense (424.1 yards per game) and rank second in scoring (27.8 per game).
Bills wideout Stefon Diggs is 15 yards away from his fifth consecutive 1,000-yard season.
Cleveland running back Nick Chubb ranks third in the NFL with 904 rushing yards and has scored 11 times on the ground. Brissett has passed for 2,074 yards, eight touchdowns and five interceptions.
Browns tight end David Njoku (ankle) was a limited practice participant on Friday and is questionable for the game. Ruled out for Cleveland are defensive backs Greg Newsome II (head) and D'Anthony Bell (concussion), guard Michael Dunn (back) and defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey (head).
Buffalo safety Jordan Poyer (elbow) is questionable, as are cornerback Kaiir Elam (ankle) and tight end Reggie Gilliam (illness). Middle linebacker Tremaine Edmunds (groin, heel), defensive end Greg Rousseau (ankle) and receiver Jake Kumerow (ankle) were ruled out.
The Bills have won four of their past six meetings with the Browns.

Redskins vs Texans

In the aftermath of a Monday night win over the Eagles, the Washington Commanders had two pressing roster issues to address in Week 11.
The Commanders (5-5) travel to face the Houston Texans (1-7-1) on Sunday at NRG Stadium most likely without quarterback Carson Wentz (finger), who was cleared to start throwing but not designated to return to the active roster. Taylor Heinicke will make his fifth start of the season.
Washington has won three of the four games started by Heinicke, including the 32-21 victory that blemished the Eagles' ledger. Replacing Heinicke with Wentz, who labored in his six starts, might have been an issue in a locker room that seems to have rallied around the former.
"We have time. That's the really good thing that is on our side," Commanders coach Ron Rivera said. "He's done some good things and we'll see how it happens this week. To me, it's part of having to make a decision. You've got to be realistic, you've got to watch and you've got to see and that's what we've been doing. We've been paying attention to it, not just an individual but as much as it affects a unit and a team.
"It's a good problem to have."
That answers the first question for Washington.
The other: discussion of Commanders defensive end Chase Young, the second overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, playing against the Texans multiplied in recent days. Young, who last played on Nov. 14, 2021, prior to undergoing knee surgery, is nearing a return but the decision on when is still pending.
"I think we still have a little over a week to make that decision, but he is trending in the right direction," Rivera said. "We'll have to see how things unfold this week as well. But it is coming."
The Commanders are 4-1 in their last five games with Washington's only loss a 20-17 setback against the Vikings. All five were one-possession games in the fourth quarter.
Houston hasn't had made close calls in 2022 but its past three losses in a current four-game losing streak were all decided by one possession -- no more than eight points.
In an attempt to bolster an offense that ranks 28th in scoring and 29th in yards, the Texans executed two waiver claims this week, adding running back Eno Benjamin from the Arizona Cardinals on Tuesday and receiver Amari Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers on Wednesday.
Rodgers, a third-round selection (85th overall) out of Clemson in 2021, scuffled on special teams and logged only 201 offensive snaps over two seasons while amassing eight receptions for 95 yards. Rodgers had five fumbles this season, the most by any non-quarterback in the NFL, including one in Week 10 against the Dallas Cowboys that facilitated his release.
Benjamin, taken in the seventh round out of Arizona State in 2020, produced 70 carries for 299 yards and two touchdowns this season. The Texans are desirous to build depth behind rookie running back Dameon Pierce, who has 898 yards and four touchdowns from scrimmage, but there is uncertainty as to whether Benjamin will be available to play against the Commanders.
"No, he'll be out there (Thursday)," Texans coach Lovie Smith said. "As far as improving our roster, whenever we have a chance, we're constantly looking to improve our roster. When players become available that we think that can help us, and that's the case with Eno.
"I'll put it like this. We have to keep moving on like he's not going to play. Since we're bringing a new player into the mix, we played a lot of games when he wasn't a part of the team, so we're moving on like he is not and will not (play). We're going to give him a little bit of time, at least get in the building and then we'll see."

Eagles vs Colts

There is no time for reflection as the Philadelphia Eagles hit the road following the team's first loss of the season Monday night.
Now with the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys nipping at their heels in the NFC East, the Eagles will pay a visit to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday afternoon.
Philadelphia (8-1) is gearing up to recover quickly from Monday's stunning 32-21 home loss to the Washington Commanders when they travel to play the Colts (4-5-1).
The Eagles lead the Giants by one game and the Cowboys by two and will play New York twice and Dallas once over the season's final five weeks.
The Colts are a more pressing concern.
Indianapolis is coming off a 25-20 victory at Las Vegas in interim coach Jeff Saturday's debut, with on-again/off-again starter Matt Ryan throwing the game-winning TD with 5:07 left.
Jonathan Taylor ran for 147 yards (with a 66-yard touchdown) against the Raiders and will be facing a Philadelphia defense that has allowed 464 yards on the ground over the last three games.
"They are going to run until we stop it," Eagles defensive end Brandon Graham said after Monday's defeat. "We've got to fix our issues."
Making his debut as the Colts' offensive play-caller, Parks Frazier saw his team score more than 20 points for just the second time all season.
"You don't know when you get in the moment how you're going to respond," Frazier said. "For me, just being in the moment and everything just felt natural to me. I think that gave me a lot of confidence moving forward."
Frazier has some familiarity with the Philadelphia playbook, having worked on the Indianapolis staff with Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni and defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon.
The chess match goes both ways, as Colts defensive coordinator Gus Bradley and Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen held the same roles together with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2020.
"They do a great job running the ball, obviously, and they do a great job getting the ball into their playmakers' hands," Bradley said of the Eagles. "... What separates them is you go into a game saying how do we limit these explosive plays?
"If they're on the field a lot, they're going to score a lot of points."
The teams are polar opposites entering Week 11 when it comes to turnovers.
The Eagles still lead the NFL with a plus-13 turnover differential despite four giveaways on Monday night -- one more than they had in their first eight games combined. Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson leads the NFL with six interceptions, all in his last five games.
The Colts rank 31st with nine more turnovers than takeaways, and Ryan is tied for second in the league with nine interceptions. In nine career games against Philadelphia, Ryan has a 4-5 record with 17 touchdown passes and 12 picks.
Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert is out after sustaining a shoulder injury Monday.
"It's not going to be easy to replace Dallas, and it's not just one guy that's going to do it. That stinks for us as a team, stinks for Dallas," Sirianni said.
Cornerback Josh Jobe didn't practice Wednesday with a hamstring injury. Wide receivers A.J. Brown (ankle) and DeVonta Smith (knee) were limited, as were center Jason Kelce (ankle), defensive tackle Fletcher Cox (foot) and linebacker Haason Reddick (thigh).
Colts linebacker Shaquille Leonard had season-ending back surgery Tuesday. Defensive end Kwity Paye left Sunday's game with an ankle injury and did not practice Wednesday. Neither did running back Deon Jackson (knee), defensive tackle DeForest Buckner (neck) or cornerback Kenny Moore II (illness).

Lions vs Giants

Life hasn't been this good this late in the season for the New York Giants since 2016, when they finished 11-5.
New York (7-2) holds what would be a playoff position in the NFC through Week 10 and came out of its bye week by using a familiar formula for success to smack the Houston Texans.
The Giants relied on Saquon Barkley's legs and Daniel Jones' savvy, while the defense continued to limit big plays.
New York churned out its seventh single-digit victory against Houston and now hosts the suddenly revived Detroit Lions (3-6) on Sunday.
Barkley, the league's leading rusher at 931 yards, toted the ball a whopping 35 times for 152 yards against the Texans and capitalized on the NFL's worst run defense.
Jones hasn't passed for more than 217 yards in any game this season but he's made smart decisions and uses his mobility when necessary. He hasn't thrown an interception in six games, which is a big reason why the Giants are breathing down the necks of the Philadelphia Eagles (8-1) for the NFC East lead.
Darius Slayton is emerging as the top wideout. He caught a 54-yard touchdown pass against the Texans and has 11 receptions over the past three games.
The defense gave up a season-high 27 points to Seattle just before the bye week and allowed 387 yards to Houston but produced two turnovers and four sacks in the 24-16 victory.
The Giants have the NFL's second-ranked defense in the red zone, allowing touchdowns just 38.2 percent of the time.
"They execute well. It's not very complicated in terms of if you do your job, you give yourself a chance to make a play or execute a particular (play)," head coach Brian Daboll said. "Whether it's offense, defense -- whatever it may be -- those guys do a good job each week of honing in on the game plan. Coaches do a good job of installing the game plan, and at the end of the day, the players got to make the plays down there."
Despite its record, Detroit is quite capable of chunk plays. The offense has produced 42 plays of 20 or more yards, fourth-most in the league.
"They create explosive plays," Daboll said. "The other thing they're really good at is down in the red zone, finishing drives. It's a team effort every week of how you need to play a game. But they're an explosive team -- no question about it."
The Lions did something in Chicago that they hadn't accomplished in 29 years. They rallied last week from a 24-10 deficit to pull out a 31-30 victory, the franchise's first win after trailing by 14 or more points entering the fourth quarter since 1993.
Detroit snapped a five-game losing streak the previous week by edging Green Bay 15-9.
Now, the Lions will try to accomplish something they haven't done since 2017 -- win three consecutive games.
"If you really want to become a truly competitive, good team, you have to stack some wins together," second-year head coach Dan Campbell said. "All the good ones do."
Campbell's team will need to find ways to limit Barkley, as well as Jones, on the ground. Jones has rushed for 387 yards and three touchdowns and Detroit's defense has struggled against mobile quarterbacks. Bears quarterback Justin Fields rushed for 147 yards and two touchdowns last week.
"They're running the ball well," Campbell said of the Giants, who average 4.8 yards per carry. "Most of it is Barkley. That's where the explosive plays are coming from and that's helping the quarterback play well, too. They're playing good football right now. They're very efficient."
The Lions' offense has been much more efficient over the past three games, turning the ball over just once.
Center Frank Ragnow (foot), receiver Josh Reynolds (back) and running back Jamaal Williams (illness) were among the Lions who didn't practice on Wednesday. Tight end Daniel Bellinger (eye) and linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux (illness) sat out the Giants' practice.

Raiders vs Broncos

Raiders Week in Denver arrived with little fanfare as the AFC West rivals prepare to face off with a combined record of 5-13 in 2022.
Las Vegas comes to town as the conversation stirs around both franchises is fixed more on survival than superiority.
The ones trying to survive might be the head coaches.
The Broncos (3-6) and Raiders (2-7) meet in Denver on Sunday with playoff hopes all but extinguished.
Josh McDaniels took over a Las Vegas team that made the playoffs under an interim coach last season but has suffered some bad losses to publicly put his job in jeopardy.
The drumbeat for McDaniels, who coached the Broncos in 2009-10 for 28 games before being fired, got louder when his Raiders lost to Indianapolis -- at home -- last week. The Colts played their first game under interim Jeff Saturday, who had never been a coach of any kind beyond high school.
Las Vegas owner Mark Davis has given McDaniels a vote of confidence.
"People in today's world want instant gratification. The guy's coached nine games. We're 2-7, not the results we're looking for but at the same time we've lost six one-score games with the ball and a chance to win at the end," Davis told ESPN.
One of the Raiders' wins was over Denver on Oct. 2, a 32-23 victory that was the high-water mark for the Broncos' offense this season. Denver is averaging an NFL-worst 14.6 points, which has wasted a defense that holds opponents to the fewest per game (16.6).
The Broncos acquired Russell Wilson from Seattle in the offseason to solve their quarterback quandary. But the offense has produced just 12 touchdowns in nine games.
While Denver sinks, Wilson and head coach Nathaniel Hackett, in his first year as a head coach, are having trouble getting in sync.
"We're close, but that's not what we're here for," Hackett said. "We're not here to be No. 1 in close games. We're here to win football games. ... We've got to get this stuff fixed."
That task was made more difficult with injuries to the offense. KJ Hamler (hamstring) and Jerry Jeudy (ankle) are hurt, with Hamler expected to miss a few weeks, further depleting the wide receiver corps.
The offensive line has been hit hard by injuries, too. Center Lloyd Cushenberry III was placed on injured reserve on Nov. 8, guard Graham Glasgow left Sunday's loss at Tennessee with a shoulder injury and guard Billy Turner was placed on IR on Monday with a knee injury.
Denver lost tackle Garrett Bolles for the season with a broken leg suffered Oct. 6.
Glasgow was able to practice limitedly Wednesday, so his chances of playing Sunday are improving. He is listed as questionable, as is safety Justin Simmons, who has been in and out of the lineup this year.
Simmons missed the Broncos' most recent game, a 17-10 loss to the Titans, with a knee injury but practiced Wednesday.
Raiders running back Brandon Bolden did not practice on Wednesday for personal reasons, while receiver Davante Adams (abdomen) was limited. Linebacker Denzel Perryman (hip/ribs) was also limited.

The Minnesota Vikings are the NFL's hottest team with seven straight wins, including a scintillating victory in arguably the best NFL game of the season.
The Vikings (8-1) find themselves listed as underdogs at home this Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys (6-3) in Minneapolis. FanDuel and DraftKings list the Cowboys as 1.5-point favorites.
So does the perceived slight bother Minnesota coach Kevin O'Connell? Well, no.
In fact, he admitted Wednesday that he doesn't listen to analysts on national television questioning if his team is a serious Super Bowl contender.
"I don't hear because I don't have a lot of time to take in the daily shows too much," O'Connell said. "I will say this: At this point I know there needs to be some things to talk about. ... If we focus on anything outside of our preparation for the Dallas Cowboys, I think I'd be doing a disservice to our team. And I think our players understand that as well.
"This thing has a way of playing out where I believe the teams that deserve to be talked about will be talked about in the end."
People certainly are talking about Justin Jefferson, who received NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors after recording 10 receptions for a career-high 193 yards and a touchdown in the Vikings' 33-30 overtime win at the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. Jefferson was limited at midweek with a toe injury but was on the field Friday and plans to play in Week 11.
There is plenty of talk about Dalvin Cook, who rolled up a season-best 146 scrimmage yards (119 rushing, 27 receiving) and a rushing touchdown against Buffalo. He has six touchdowns (five rushing, one receiving) over his last five games.
"Well, we don't listen to that anyway," Cook said of whether his team is getting the respect its due. "We just look for preparation each and every week and go out and perform well. Blocking the outside noise out, they are gonna say what they are gonna say anyway -- whether it's good or bad."
Cook will face a Cowboys defense that ranks 29th against the run (143.1).
Speaking of running backs, Ezekiel Elliott participated in workouts throughout the week and is set to return, Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said Friday. The two-time NFL rushing champion has been idle with a knee injury since scoring two touchdowns in Dallas' 24-6 victory over the Detroit Lions on Oct. 23.
McCarthy told reporters Wednesday that a quick turnaround for the game on Thanksgiving with the New York Giants will not impact on the team's thinking.
"If he's ready to play this week, we're going to play him," McCarthy said.
Tony Pollard has fared well in Elliott's absence, rolling up 131 rushing yards and three touchdowns in the Cowboys' 49-29 win over the Chicago Bears on Oct. 30 and 115-1 in a 31-28 overtime loss to the Green Bay Packers last Sunday. The Vikings are allowing over 118 rushing yards per game.
Dak Prescott threw for three touchdowns against Green Bay. He also tossed three touchdown passes in an encounter versus the Vikings in 2019, however he was unavailable to play due to injury in last year's 20-16 victory in Minneapolis.
CeeDee Lamb, who had 112 receiving yards in last year's game, totaled career highs in catches (11) and receiving yards (150) to go along with two touchdowns last week. He also has three touchdowns in his last two games after totaling two in his previous 14.
Dallas boasts an NFL-best 35 sacks, but defensive end Demarcus Lawrence (foot, knee) will be playing hurt this week.
Minnesota's Za'Darius Smith's 9.5 sacks are second in the league.
Smith (knee) joined Jefferson (toe) in being limited in Wednesday's practice for the Vikings. Defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson (calf), offensive tackle Christian Darrisaw (concussion) and cornerback Akayleb Evans (concussion) did not participate in the session.
As for the Cowboys, defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence (foot) was listed as a non-participant in Wednesday's walkthrough session. Linebacker Anthony Barr (hamstring) and cornerback Anthony Brown (concussion) were listed as limited.

Bengals vs Steelers

The Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers have watched their seasons go in opposite directions after the Steelers won their Week 1 meeting.
The Bengals are out to avenge that loss and keep pace in the AFC North Division standings when they visit Pittsburgh on Sunday.
Joe Burrow was sacked seven times and threw four interceptions when the Bengals (5-4) fell to the Steelers 23-20 in overtime on Sept. 11. Pittsburgh managed to spoil host Cincinnati's first game since reaching Super Bowl LVI the previous winter.
The Bengals went on to start 0-2 but have gone 5-2 since. They're one game behind the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC North race with seven games to go. The Bengals, who lost to the Ravens on Oct. 8, close the regular season by hosting Baltimore.
"That's always the goal. That's right there for us," Burrow said. "We are a game out of first place. We have to go and get this one and then we will take it from there."
In their most recent game before their Week 10 bye, the Bengals trounced the Carolina Panthers 42-21. Joe Mixon scored a career-high five touchdowns, rushing for a career-best four scores and a season-high 153 yards on 22 carries and catching four passes, including a 12-yard touchdown, for 58 yards.
"We ran the ball great two weeks ago now, but that's just one game," Burrow said. "So we got to build on that. The coaching staff is really excited about the plan, so am I and Joe's looking to build on that momentum from that week."
Burrow stands at 9,834 career passing yards through 35 regular-season games and can become the fourth-fastest in NFL history to reach 10,000 if he throws for at least 166 Sunday.
The Steelers (3-6) started Mitch Trubisky at quarterback in Week 1, but amid a four-game losing streak after that season opener they moved on to first-round selection Kenny Pickett. The rookie had one of his best performances of the season in last week's 20-10 win over the New Orleans Saints by completing 18 of 30 passes for 199 yards and rushing for 51 yards and a touchdown.
So far Pickett is completing 66.7 percent of his passes but has just two touchdowns against eight interceptions. He said that red-zone offense is one particular area where he must improve.
"We're not where we need to be," Pickett said, per the team website. "Obviously, there's less grass, so it's tighter windows, the timing, everything is faster. I've got to meet the guys at certain spots with the ball and they've got to get there on time. The game changes when you get down there. The calls change. The system changes. There are definitely things we need to get better at."
Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick returned to practice Thursday after having an appendectomy last Saturday. He was not given an injury designation on the Steelers' report, meaning he is in line to play.
The only player Pittsburgh ruled out was cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon (hamstring).
Cincinnati would like to have star receiver Ja'Marr Chase back soon from a hip injury, but he did not practice this week and was ruled out. Defensive tackle Josh Tupou (shoulder) and safety Daxton Hill (shoulder) will also miss the game.
Bengals running back Chris Evans (knee) and cornerback Tre Flowers (hamstring) were listed as questionable after being limited in practice all week.

Chiefs vs Chargers

The Kansas City Chiefs are in the driver's seat to win the AFC West. Their chance to buckle the second-place Los Angeles Chargers into the second row comes in primetime on Sunday night in Inglewood, Calif.
After losing to the Buffalo Bills on Oct. 16, the Chiefs (7-2) have won three straight games. Most recently, Kansas City topped the visiting Jacksonville Jaguars this past weekend behind a signature performance from Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs quarterback completed 26 of 35 passes for 331 yards and four touchdowns, and he also rushed seven times for 39 yards.
The performance pushed Mahomes into the top 100 among NFL quarterbacks for career passing yards, reaching the milestone in just 72 career games.
But the buzz in Kansas City was all about Mahomes' new offensive weapon, wideout Kadarius Toney. The Chiefs acquired the second-year player in a trade last month, sending a third- and sixth-round pick to the New York Giants. In just two games with the Chiefs, Toney has 102 yards from scrimmage on eight touches.
He scored on Kansas City's second possession of the game, via a 6-yard strike from Mahomes.
"He's a smart kid and he picks it up easy. Always willing to spend time at it, too," head coach Andy Reid said of Toney. "We're trying to give him some things that he's done before, and then adding one or two things the last couple of weeks that he's not used to doing so that he can continue to grow. (Mahomes) has trust in him because of the feel that he has."
Toney could be called upon to step up with JuJu Smith-Schuster unable to play. The wide receiver was knocked out of the Jaguars game in the second quarter after being hit by Jacksonville safety Andre Cisco, and ruled out for Week 11 on Friday. Cornerback Chris Lammons (concussion protocol) is also out Sunday.
The Chargers (5-4) are coming off a loss to the San Francisco 49ers and could use a win to boost their hopes of making the playoffs after missing out on the postseason with a Week 18 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders last season.
It was a quiet game for star running back Austin Ekeler, who finished with just 24 rushing yards on six carries. He also had seven catches for 39 yards.
Still, on the season, the Chargers are 0-3 when Ekeler has fewer than 10 rushing attempts.
"We need more playmaking," Ekeler said. "We didn't have that in the second half. We can't just go out there and play hard. That doesn't win in the NFL."
Playmaking has been hindered with the absence of quarterback Justin Herbert's top wide receivers. Keenan Allen (hamstring) hasn't played since Week 1 and Mike Williams missed last week's game. He has 37 catches, tied for tops among Chargers wide receivers, but 30 fewer than Ekeler's team-leading 67.
But Allen was at practice for the second consecutive day Friday and voiced optimism he'll be on the field Sunday along with Williams.
It's not just one position group that's hurting.
The Chargers have battled injuries all season and finished the game against the 49ers with just three healthy defensive linemen. Los Angeles has 11 players on injured reserve. Chargers head coach Brandon Staley said the team will "probably make some acquisitions" this week.
"I think we're trying to mine the entire NFL and try to find the best fits," Staley said.
Three Chargers missed practice on Wednesday: kicker Dustin Hopkins (hamstring), punter JK Scott (illness) and linebacker Khalil Mack (rest), who leads the team in sacks with seven. Tight end Gerald Everett was also limited with a groin injury.
