Preview: Yankees at Blue Jays

GAME: New York Yankees (64-51) at Toronto Blue Jays (64-54)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 16 - 1:07 PM EST
WHERE: Rogers Centre, Toronto, Ontario
LINE: 123, -133 TOTAL: 9

The Toronto Blue Jays swept the New York Yankees on the road last weekend, and the Yankees are in the process of returning the favor. The Blue Jays will try to avoid a three-game sweep when they welcome New York for the finale of the three-game series on Sunday.

Toronto ripped through New York as part of an 11-game winning streak that turned a seven-game deficit in the American League East into a half-game lead entering the weekend. The Yankees have cooled the Blue Jays’ league-leading offense while coaxing their own bats out of a lengthy slump. Carlos Beltran provided the decisive, go-ahead blast in Friday’s 4-3 win and joined Mark Teixeira with a solo blast each in Saturday’s 4-1 triumph. Toronto, which had homered in 12 straight games entering the series, failed to leave the yard in each of the first two games of the series and will take its cracks at New York rookie Luis Severino in the finale while Drew Hutchison starts for the Blue Jays.

TV: 1:07 p.m. ET, YES (New York), RSN (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Luis Severino (0-1, 2.45 ERA) vs. Blue Jays RH Drew Hutchison (11-2, 5.26)

Severino is looking for his first win in his third major-league start after allowing two runs and seven hits in six innings without a decision at Cleveland on Tuesday. The 21-year-old has allowed a total of three earned runs in his first two starts but has yet to record an out in the seventh inning. Severino has recorded nine strikeouts and one walk in 11 total frames.

Hutchison enjoyed his longest outing since May 25 when he scattered two runs and four hits over seven innings in a win over Oakland on Tuesday. The 24-year-old has benefited from playing with the majors’ best offense and is 7-1 in his last 13 starts despite completing six innings only three times in that span. Hutchison made his season debut at New York on Apr. 6 and yielded one run and three hits in six innings to earn the win.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Yankees on Saturday designated LHP Chris Capuano for assignment and recalled RHP Caleb Cotham.

2. Blue Jays SS Troy Tulowitzki is 2-for-20 in five games against New York in the last nine days.

3. Toronto is 1-for-17 with runners in scoring position in the series.

Preview: Pirates at Mets

GAME: Pittsburgh Pirates (68-46) at New York Mets (63-54)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 16 - 1:10 PM EST
WHERE: Citi Field, New York City, New York
LINE: 155, -168 TOTAL: 7

Seeking to avoid being swept at home for only the second time this season, the New York Mets send ace Matt Harvey to the mound to face the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday in the finale of a three-game series. The Pirates have won the first two games in extra innings, including Saturday's 14-inning marathon, to improve to 5-0 against New York this season.

Harvey appears to be back to the dominant form he displayed prior to Tommy John surgery that wiped out his 2014 season. The hard-throwing right-hander is 3-0 over his last four outings - a stretch that featured consecutive scoreless starts and one run allowed over his last 22 2/3 innings. Pittsburgh has won 14 of its last 20 games to maintain its 1 1/2-game lead over the surging Chicago Cubs for the top wild card in the National League. Aramis Ramirez and Gregory Polanco went deep in Saturday's 5-3 victory, extending the Pirates' streak to nine games with a home run.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, TBS, ROOT (Pittsburgh), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates LH Jeff Locke (6-7, 4.43 ERA) vs. Mets RH Matt Harvey (11-7, 2.61)

Since tossing eight scoreless innings of two-hit ball versus Cleveland on July 4, Locke has been in a bit of a tailspin while registering only one quality start over his last six turns. The 27-year-old is 1-3 during that span and has been reached for four runs in four of those six starts. Locke has not fared well away from home, posting a 3-4 record with a 6.51 ERA and 1.72 WHIP in nine road starts this season.

Harvey battled control problems during a three-start stretch sandwiching the All-Star break, walking 13 batters, but he has issued only one free pass during his current four-start unbeaten streak. He mowed down the Colorado Rockies in his last turn, allowing only four hits over eight innings, and limited Miami to two hits in seven scoreless frames on August 5. Harvey was shelled for seven runs over a season-low four innings at Pittsburgh on May 23.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mets 3B Juan Uribe and LF Michael Conforto homered Saturday to set a team record with 69 homers at Citi Field this season.

2. Pittsburgh has won seven consecutive games in extra innings.

3. Mets rookie LHP Steven Matz pitched one inning in a rehab start at Class A St. Lucie, allowing one run on three hits and striking out two.

Preview: Diamondbacks at Braves

GAME: Arizona Diamondbacks (57-58) at Atlanta Braves (52-64)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 16 - 1:35 PM EST
WHERE: Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia
LINE: -109, 101 TOTAL: 7

The Arizona Diamondbacks wrap up a three-game series Sunday at the Atlanta Braves, and the finale’s starters reside on the opposite end of the run-support spectrum. Arizona’s Rubby De La Rosa ranks seventh in the majors in run support per nine innings, getting 6.14 runs, while Atlanta All-Star Shelby Miller sits 93rd (dead last among qualified starters) at 2.54.

As a result, Miller has not won in his past 15 starts while the Diamondbacks have scored six runs or more 10 times in De La Rosa’s 23 outings. The Arizona offense has been quite productive the past week, scoring 46 runs while hitting .354 in their past six contests. David Peralta collected two hits and three RBIs in Saturday’s series-tying 8-4 victory and is 16-for-31 in his past nine games. The Braves have been awful offensively since the All-Star break, ranking last in the majors in runs scored (87).

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona (Phoenix), FSN South (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks RH Rubby De La Rosa (10-5, 4.55 ERA) vs. Braves RH Shelby Miller (5-9, 2.48)

Even with the tremendous run support, De La Rosa has pitched well in his 10 victories, posting a 2.71 ERA and allowing only six homers in 66 1/3 innings. The 26-year-old has surrendered 10 homers in 25 1/3 innings in his losses, and is tied for second in the National League in homers allowed (25). De La Rosa was hammered for seven runs on nine hits in five innings in a June 3 home start against the Braves, getting a no-decision as the Diamondbacks won 9-8.

Miller has posted a 3.16 ERA and allowed only 32 earned runs in 91 innings while going 0-8 during his winless streak, which started May 23 against Milwaukee. He allowed two runs (both in the second inning) on five hits in five innings Sunday, losing to the Marlins five days after the Atlanta bullpen blew a late lead in a loss to San Francisco. Miller had one of the worst starts of his season June 2 at Arizona, getting a no-decision after allowing four runs on six hits with six walks in 4 1/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Atlanta RHP Edwin Jackson made his Braves debut Saturday – the franchise-record 55th player to appear for Atlanta this season – striking out four in 2 1/3 hitless innings.

2. Diamondbacks CF A.J. Pollock is hitting .424 during his eight-game hitting streak.

3. Atlanta 1B Freddie Freeman, out since August 3 with an oblique injury, took batting practice and is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Sunday with Triple-A Gwinnett.

GAME: Oakland Athletics (51-67) at Baltimore Orioles (59-56)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 16 - 1:35 PM EST
WHERE: Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, Maryland
LINE: 162, -176 TOTAL: 8.5

While the top dogs in the American League East battle it out elsewhere, the Baltimore Orioles are staying within striking distance, and doing so in dramatic fashion. The Orioles, who have won the first two games of their four-game series with Oakland on walk-off homers, hope to sustain their momentum when the set continues Sunday afternoon.

The New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays have swapped first place twice in the last week and the Orioles are within five games of the top spot following the back-to-back game-winners. Manny Machado did it with a two-run blast in the 13th inning Friday night and Chris Davis slugged a solo shot in the ninth - his second of the game - to give Baltimore a 4-3 triumph Saturday. Davis has three homers in the series, six in his last six games and 15 since the All-Star break, and his 34 home runs on the season rank second in the majors to Seattle's Nelson Cruz. He will take aim at Oakland right-hander Kendall Graveman, who opposes Orioles lefty Wei-Yin Chen.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, CSN California (Oakland), MASN (Baltimore)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics RH Kendall Graveman (6-8, 3.89 ERA) vs. Orioles LH Wei-Yin Chen (6-6, 3.21)

Since tossing exactly seven innings in four straight starts, Graveman has completed six just once in his last six outings, including a rocky 4 2/3 innings in a loss at Toronto on Tuesday. He allowed four runs (two earned), falling to 0-4 during the six-game swoon. The 24-year-old, who owns a 3.17 ERA in 10 road starts, let up three runs in 5 2/3 frames in a no-decision against Baltimore on Aug. 5

Chen yielded a run and three hits in 7 1/3 dominant innings at Seattle on Monday in his longest start since July 12. He has allowed three runs or fewer in 13 of his last 14 starts, including an uneven five-inning effort opposite Graveman two turns ago. The Taiwan native is 4-0 with a 2.19 ERA in six career starts versus Oakland.

WALK-OFFS

1. Oakland has lost 14 of its last 17 games against AL East opponents.

2. Athletics RF Josh Reddick is batting .338 with five homers in 20 career games at Camden Yards

3. The all-time series is tied at 256 wins apiece.

Preview: Mariners at Red Sox

GAME: Seattle Mariners (54-63) at Boston Red Sox (52-64)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 16 - 1:35 PM EST
WHERE: Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts
LINE: 108, -117 TOTAL: 9

The Boston Red Sox came into the season looking like a team with the best offense in baseball. It took a few months and the team is out of the postseason race, but the offense is finally putting up big numbers and will try to lead the team to a three-game sweep of the visiting Seattle Mariners on Sunday.

The Red Sox learned on Friday that manager John Farrell was diagnosed with lymphoma and tried to lift his spirits with season-highs of 21 hits and 15 runs in a 15-1 drubbing. Felix Hernandez was no match for that momentum on Saturday and could not help the Mariners as Boston upped both totals with 26 hits in a 22-10 victory. Leading the way is a surprising explosion from Jackie Bradley Jr., who seemed to be out of the team’s plans due to a lack of hitting but homered twice and doubled three times on Saturday and is 13-for-22 with nine extra-base hits, 13 RBIs and 11 runs scored in a five-game stretch. Bradley will take aim at Seattle left-hander Vidal Nuno, who is looking for his first win of the season, in Sunday’s finale.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, ROOT Northwest (Seattle), NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners LH Vidal Nuno (0-2, 2.64 ERA) vs. Red Sox LH Henry Owens (1-1, 3.60)

Seattle needs some length out of Nuno after forcing the bullpen to soak up 11 1/3 innings over the last two games. The 28-year-old is making just his third start of the season and went five innings – his longest stint since joining the Mariners at the beginning of June – in a loss to Baltimore on Monday, allowing two runs and five hits. Nuno is 0-1 with a 2.18 ERA in 11 road games – one start – this season.

Owens earned his first win in his second major-league start last Sunday at Detroit, allowing one run on three hits and four walks in five innings. Owens could not make it past the fifth in either of his first two chances. The 23-year-old is making his home debut.

WALK-OFFS

1. Red Sox 3B Pablo Sandoval left Saturday’s game after being hit by a pitch in the elbow and is day-to-day.

2. Seattle CF Austin Jackson is 8-for-18 with four doubles and a home run in the last four games.

3. Boston RHP Ryan Cook has allowed nine runs and 10 hits in two total innings since joining the team earlier this week.

Preview: Cubs at White Sox

GAME: Chicago Cubs (67-48) at Chicago White Sox (54-60)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 16 - 2:10 PM EST
WHERE: U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago, Illinois
LINE: 164, -178 TOTAL: 7.5

The red-hot Chicago Cubs look to match their longest winning streak in 14 years as they go for a three-game sweep of the host Chicago White Sox on Sunday. The Cubs made it nine consecutive wins with a 6-3 victory on Saturday to improve to 15-1 in their last 16 games - their hottest stretch since winning 12 in a row and 15 of 16 in 2001.

The White Sox look to cool off their torrid city rivals behind Chris Sale, who dominated the Cubs last month at Wrigley Field. Sale struck out 10 and limited the Cubs to one run and six hits over seven innings on July 11 in his lone career start against them. Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who had a pair of hits off Sale in that matchup, is sizzling during the 15-1 run as he's gone 23-for-55 with seven home runs and 17 RBIs. Recent acquisition Dan Haren will get the start for the Cubs, who remain 1 1/2 games behind Pittsburgh for the top wild card in the National League.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, CSN Chicago (Cubs), WGN (White Sox)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs RH Dan Haren (8-7, 3.55 ERA) vs. White Sox LH Chris Sale (10-7, 3.47)

Haren, acquired from Miami at the trade deadline, notched his first victory as a Cub and second win overall since June 3 by holding Milwaukee to three runs over 5 1/3 innings on Tuesday. The 34-year-old has not pitched beyond six frames in nine consecutive starts and continues to be victimized by the long ball, surrendering nine homers in his last five turns. Haren is 1-1 with a 3.80 ERA at U.S. Cellular Field.

Sale got back on track in his last outing, limiting the Los Angeles Angels to two runs and five hits over 7 1/3 innings to reach double-digit victories for the fourth consecutive season. He had been rocked for seven runs in each of his previous two outings and was tagged for a season-high 12 hits in a loss at Boston on July 30. Cubs rookie Kris Bryant has struck out in all three plate appearances against the 6-6 Sale.

WALK-OFFS

1. Bryant has hit safely in 12 straight games, the longest active streak in the NL.

2. White Sox LF Melky Cabrera is 1-for-14 over his last three games.

3. Cubs rookie LF Kyle Schwarber recorded a run-scoring single Saturday, his 14th RBI in the last 10 games.

Preview: Indians at Twins

GAME: Cleveland Indians (54-61) at Minnesota Twins (58-58)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 16 - 2:10 PM EST
WHERE: Target Field, Minneapolis, Minnesota
LINE: -130, 120 TOTAL: 8

The Cleveland Indians attempt to make it two series wins over Minnesota in as many weekends when they host the Twins in the rubber match of their three-game set on Sunday. Cleveland won two of three at home against its American League Central rival last weekend and cruised to victory in Friday's opener at Target Field before dropping a 4-1 decision on Saturday.

The Indians were one out away from being shut out before Roberto Perez delivered an RBI single - only their fourth hit of the contest. One day after recording just one hit, Minnesota managed six on Saturday - four of which were home runs. Eddie Rosario and Chris Herrmann belted solo shots while Brian Dozier added a two-run blast as the Twins won for the fourth time in 13 games. Minnesota begins Sunday two games behind the Los Angeles Angels for the second AL wild card while Cleveland sits 5 1/2 games back.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland), FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Carlos Carrasco (11-8, 3.68 ERA) vs. Twins LH Tommy Milone (5-3, 3.76)

Carrasco has been sensational over his last three starts, tossing a two-hitter in a complete-game victory at Oakland on July 30 and allowing one hit over nine innings in a no-decision at the Angels on Aug. 4 before yielding two runs and four hits over eight frames against the New York Yankees on Tuesday but again not factoring in the decision. The 28-year-old Venezuelan has given up two runs or fewer in seven of his last nine outings but is only 3-2 in that span. Carrasco is 1-3 with a 3.40 ERA in 10 career games (seven starts) versus Minnesota.

Milone will be activated from the disabled list to make his first start since July 31, when he surrendered four runs and 11 hits in six innings of a loss to Seattle. The 28-year-old Californian, who has been sidelined with a mild left flexor strain, yielded 15 runs and 20 hits (six home runs) over 14 2/3 frames in his last three outings before the injury. Milone has made four career starts against Cleveland, going 1-1 with a 1.99 ERA.

WALK-OFFS

1. All five runs the Twins have scored in the series have come via home runs.

2. Cleveland had its streak of consecutive games with a double-digit amount of hits halted at seven on Saturday.

3. Minnesota 1B Joe Mauer is 6-for-11 (.545) lifetime against Carrasco while RF Torii Hunter is 6-for-18 with two homers.

Preview: Tigers at Astros

GAME: Detroit Tigers (56-60) at Houston Astros (63-54)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 16 - 2:10 PM EST
WHERE: Minute Maid Park, Houston, Texas
LINE: 172, -187 TOTAL: 8

The recent struggles of the Los Angeles Angels are the only thing keeping the Houston Astros atop the American League West at the moment. The Astros will try to grab just their fourth win in the last 12 games and maintain their 2 1/2-game lead in the West when they host the Detroit Tigers in the rubber match of a three-game series on Friday.

Houston is struggling with its offense and is averaging 2.3 runs in its last seven games, highlighted by a 5-1 win in Friday’s opener. The Astros showed a spark with Preston Tucker’s tying blast in the bottom of the ninth inning on Saturday but could not put the Tigers away and wound up suffering a 4-2 loss in 11 innings. Detroit is enjoying the return of All-Star Miguel Cabrera, who played for the first time since July 3 in the series opener and added a pair of hits on Saturday. Cabrera will try for another multi-hit game against Houston starter Mike Fiers while rookie lefty Matt Boyd takes the mound for the Tigers in the finale.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, ROOT Southwest (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers LH Matt Boyd (1-3, 7.11 ERA) vs. Astros RH Mike Fiers (5-9, 4.03)

Boyd is 1-1 in two starts since joining the Tigers from the Blue Jays in the David Price trade but is coming off the loss. The Oregon State product had the misfortune of facing the AL-best Kansas City Royals in both starts and was reached for three runs on nine hits while striking out six in 5 1/3 innings on Monday. Boyd is making his first start against Houston.

Fiers is a new acquisition as well and has yet to earn a decision in two starts since joining the Astros from the Milwaukee Brewers. The Florida native was reached for six runs in five innings in his team debut on Aug. 3 but recovered to hold Oakland to one run in 6 2/3 frames last Sunday. Fiers started at Detroit for Milwaukee on May 18 and allowed two runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings without factoring in the decision.

WALK-OFFS

1. Tigers DH Victor Martinez made his first start of the season at 1B on Saturday and went 1-for-5 with the go-ahead RBI.

2. Houston rookie SS Carlos Correa is 2-for-4 with five walks in the series.

3. Detroit RF J.D. Martinez is 3-for-21 with 10 strikeouts in his last six games.

GAME: Philadelphia Phillies (46-71) at Milwaukee Brewers (50-68)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 16 - 2:10 PM EST
WHERE: Miller Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
LINE: 152, -165 TOTAL: 8.5

The Milwaukee Brewers attempt to complete a season sweep when they host the Philadelphia Phillies in the finale of their three-game series on Sunday. Milwaukee swept a four-game set at Philadelphia from June 29-July 2 and posted a 3-1 victory in Friday's opener before rallying for a 4-2 triumph on Sunday.

Scooter Gennett, who went 4-for-4, recorded a pair of RBI singles and scored the tiebreaking run on Jean Segura's base hit in the seventh inning as the Brewers recorded their third straight home win and sixth in eight contests at Miller Park. Chase Utley extended his hitting streak to seven games with a double and a solo homer as Philadelphia lost for the fourth time in five contests. Utley, who is expected to be traded before the August 31 deadline, is 13-for-26 during his streak and has driven in five runs over his last five games. The Phillies are 4-4 on their nine-game road trip and have scored a total of seven runs in their last four losses.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Aaron Harang (5-13, 4.52 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Taylor Jungmann (6-4, 2.42)

Harang is coming off his 10th loss in 11 starts, a setback at Arizona on Monday in which he was pounded for eight runs and 12 hits in 5 1/3 innings. It marked the second time in four outings the 37-year-old Californian surrendered eight runs, with the other being a five-inning stint against Milwaukee on July 1. That defeat dropped Harang to 7-7 with one shutout and a 4.40 ERA in 28 career games (27 starts) versus the Brewers.

Jungmann lasted only 2 2/3 innings against the Cubs in Chicago on Tuesday as he yielded four runs - two earned - on five hits and three walks en route to his third loss in four outings. The 25-year-old Texan has given up fewer than three earned runs in each of his last nine starts but is only 4-3 in that span. Jungmann settled for a no-decision in his lone career turn versus the Phillies on June 30, when he allowed three runs - two earned - in six innings at Philadelphia.

WALK-OFFS

1. Phillies 3B Maikel Franco is expected to miss his fourth consecutive game Sunday due to a bruised left wrist.

2. Gennett's four-hit performance Saturday was the first of his career and his 12th multi-hit effort of the season.

3. Milwaukee 1B Adam Lind is 4-for-6 with three homers against Harang.

GAME: Miami Marlins (46-70) at St. Louis Cardinals (75-41)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 16 - 2:15 PM EST
WHERE: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri
LINE: 201, -220 TOTAL: 7

The St. Louis Cardinals look to finish off a three-game sweep and win for the ninth time in 11 games whey host the Miami Marlins on Sunday. St. Louis limited Miami to three total runs while winning the first two games and has allowed three or fewer runs in eight of its past 10 games.

Rookie outfielder Stephen Piscotty had his second three-hit outing in five games and veteran first baseman Mark Reynolds bashed a three-run homer as the Cardinals posted a 6-2 victory on Saturday. St. Louis racked up 13 hits - five for extra bases - but third baseman Matt Carpenter went 0-for-4 to end a 10-game hitting streak. Miami outfielder Ichiro Suzuki went 2-for-4 in the contest to raise his professional hit total between Japan and the majors to 4,193, two more than Ty Cobb's second-best major-league hit count. "I don't even like to talk age any more with Ichiro," Marlins manager Dan Jennings said of the 41-year-old Suzuki. "He makes me feel old. I want to get on his program so I can feel younger than I do."

TV: 2:15 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH David Phelps (4-8, 4.35 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Carlos Martinez (12-4, 2.62)

Phelps has lost five consecutive decisions since last winning on June 16. He was roughed up by the New York Mets in his last start when he gave up seven runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings. Phelps allowed five runs (three earned) and eight hits in six innings in his lone outing against the Cardinals, which came in 2014 while he was a member of the New York Yankees.

Martinez has won five of his past six decisions while enjoying a breakout campaign. He defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates in his last outing when he gave up three runs and nine hits over eight innings. Martinez won his lone career start against the Marlins, striking out nine and giving up three runs and eight hits in seven innings on June 23.

WALK-OFFS

1. Marlins 1B Justin Bour hit a solo homer on Saturday, the first time he has gone deep since July 3.

2. St. Louis CF Randal Grichuk homered on Saturday - his fourth of the month and 15th on the season.

3. Miami placed CF Christian Yelich (knee) on the disabled list and recalled OF Marcell Ozuna from Triple-A New Orleans.

Preview: Nationals at Giants

GAME: Washington Nationals (58-58) at San Francisco Giants (63-53)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 16 - 4:05 PM EST
WHERE: AT&T Park, San Francisco, California
LINE: 154, -167 TOTAL: 7

The Washington Nationals head into Sunday’s series finale against the host San Francisco Giants hoping a rookie can do what Stephen Strasburg, Max Scherzer and Gio Gonzalez failed to achieve in the first three games. Joe Ross will look to snap the Nationals’ five-game losing streak when he matches up against Madison Bumgarner and the Giants, who have won four of their last five.

The Nationals could be without star right fielder Bryce Harper, who left Saturday’s 12-6 loss in the seventh inning after fouling a ball off his left ankle. Harper’s absence would be hard to overcome for the struggling Nationals, who are 10-19 since the All-Star break and 4 1/2 games behind the NL East-leading Mets. The Giants have won 12 of their last 14 home games and sit 2 1/2 games back of the Dodgers in the NL West despite missing injured outfielders Angel Pagan (right knee tendinitis) and Nori Aoki (concussion) along with second baseman Joe Panik (back). Third baseman Matt Duffy might not want the Nationals to leave after going 6-for-12 with a home run and eight RBIs in the last three games.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Washington), CSN Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Joe Ross (3-4, 3.44 ERA) vs. Giants LH Madison Bumgarner (13-6, 3.15)

Ross looks to bounce back from the worst outing of his short career after yielding five runs over 4 2/3 innings in a 5-0 loss to the Dodgers on Tuesday. The Bay Area native bumped veteran Doug Fister from the rotation after posting a 2.92 ERA in his previous four starts. Ross, who is making his first career start against the Giants, owns a 48-to-8 strikeout-to-walk ratio through 49 2/3 innings.

Bumgarner struck out 12 and didn't walk a batter in a complete-game 3-1 win over Houston on Tuesday, giving him five victories in his last six starts. “We ran into one of the better pitchers in the bigs,” Astros manager A.J. Hinch told reporters. “He really had good stuff and we couldn’t really rally against him.” Harper is 4-for-11 with two home runs against Bumgarner, who is 2-4 with a 3.42 ERA in eight career starts against the Nationals.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Nationals are at .500 for the first time since they were 15-15 after May 8.

2. San Francisco is averaging 5.4 runs per game at AT&T Park in 24 games since June 16.

3. Washington 1B Ryan Zimmerman is 1-for-16 with 10 strikeouts in his last five games.

Preview: Rays at Rangers

GAME: Tampa Bay Rays (58-58) at Texas Rangers (58-57)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 16 - 3:05 PM EST
WHERE: Globe Life Park in Arlington, Arlington, Texas
LINE: -107, -101 TOTAL: 9

Left-hander Drew Smyly takes a major league mound for the first time since April as his Tampa Bay Rays try to avoid a three-game sweep against the host Texas Rangers on Sunday afternoon. Smyly, who made a strong impression after being acquired by the Rays at the trade deadline last season, suffered a torn labrum after three starts in 2015.

Smyly looks to cool off the Rangers, who have scored 23 runs combined while winning three straight to move within 1½ games of the Los Angeles Angels for the second American League wild card – and a half game ahead of Tampa Bay. Adrian Beltre belted a three-run homer in the 12-4 Texas victory Saturday and is 5-for-8 in his career against Smyly. Yovani Gallardo goes for the Rangers and must be careful against James Loney, who is 6-for-20 versus the right-hander. Tampa Bay shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera was held to a solo homer Saturday, but has multiple hits in eight of his last 10 contests.

TV: 3:05 p.m. ET, Sun Sports (Tampa Bay), FSN Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays LH Drew Smyly (0-1, 2.70 ERA) vs. Rangers RH Yovani Gallardo (8-9, 3.33)

Smyly allowed five runs and 10 hits with 21 strikeouts and three walks over 16 2/3 innings during three starts in April before going down with an injury. The 26-year-old was 3-1 with a 1.70 ERA and 0.76 WHIP in seven outings for the Rays after being acquired in the David Price deal. Josh Hamilton is 3-for-11 with a homer versus Smyly, who is 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA in nine appearances (four starts) against the Rangers.

Gallardo did not factor into the decision last time out while throwing 5 2/3 scoreless frames against Minnesota, marking his best start by far during a four-game unbeaten streak. The 29-year-old Mexican walked 13 and struck out only nine in his last five starts, in which he yielded 18 runs over 24 2/3 total innings. Gallardo was reached for four runs (three earned) in 5 1/3 innings to lose at Tampa Bay on May 8.

WALK-OFFS

1. Texas 1B Mitch Moreland is 7-for-11 the last three games and OF Shin-Soo Choo is 6-for-13 over the last four contests for the Rangers.

2. Tampa Bay DH John Jaso is 20-for-42 in road games this season after registering three hits and a walk in six plate appearances during this series.

3. Rangers RHP Shawn Tolleson is 22-for-23 in save opportunities this season and has allowed one run in his last 13 appearances.

GAME: Cincinnati Reds (51-64) at Los Angeles Dodgers (66-51)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 16 - 4:10 PM EST
WHERE: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, California
LINE: 206, -225 TOTAL: 7

Zack Greinke is 7-0 over his past eight starts and looks to add another victory Sunday when the Los Angeles Dodgers close a four-game set against the Cincinnati Reds. Greinke has allowed only nine runs - five in one start - over his last 10 outings and leads the majors with a 1.59 ERA.

Greinke has allowed two or fewer runs in 19 of his 23 starts this season while arguably being the best pitcher in the majors. He hasn't lost since falling to the San Diego Padres on June 13 and rebounded by putting together a streak of 45 2/3 scoreless innings. The Dodgers tied a season-best with four homers in Saturday's 8-3 victory, their second straight victory over the Reds after losing the series opener. Cincinnati has dropped eight of its last 11 games despite torrid hitting from All-Star third baseman Todd Frazier, who belted his 29th homer Saturday and is 8-for-20 with five extra-base hits over the last five games.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati), SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Anthony DeSclafani (7-7, 3.75 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Zack Greinke (12-2, 1.59)

DeSclafani has pitched well over his last three starts by going 2-0 with a 2.37 ERA. He received a no-decision in his last turn when he allowed three runs and 10 hits in six innings versus the Arizona Diamondbacks. DeSclafani defeated the Dodgers in his major-league debut last season when he allowed two runs and seven hits over six innings.

Greinke defeated the Washington Nationals in his last start when he gave up six hits over six scoreless innings. He has issued two or fewer walks in 21 of his 23 outings and leads the majors with a 0.86 WHIP. Greinke is 5-2 with a 2.75 ERA in 10 career starts against the Reds but has struggled against first baseman Joey Votto (10-for-24, three homers, three doubles).

WALK-OFFS

1. Dodgers CF Joc Pederson is 4-for-44 over his last 16 games to see his average drop 17 points to .217.

2. Votto is 8-for-16 with two homers and seven RBIs over the past four contests.

3. Los Angeles LF Carl Crawford reached base four times on two hits and two walks Saturday and is 8-for-11 over his past six games.

GAME: San Diego Padres (56-61) at Colorado Rockies (47-68)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 16 - 4:10 PM EST
WHERE: Coors Field, Denver, Colorado
LINE: -104, -104 TOTAL: 11

The San Diego Padres have dominated Colorado this season and look to wrap up a three-game sweep of the host Rockies on Sunday. San Diego pushed across three runs in the top of the ninth Saturday for a 7-5 victory to improve to 9-2 against Colorado.

The Padres have won four of their last five games and have scored 30 runs over their last four contests. San Diego second baseman Jedd Gyorko had a two-run double Saturday and has two homers and 10 RBIs over the past four games. The Rockies have lost six straight games - allowing 28 runs over the past three - and seven of their last eight while slipping to a season-worst 21 games below .500. Colorado third baseman Nolan Arenado is 5-for-8 in the series and had two RBIs Saturday to remained tied with Arizona's Paul Goldschmidt for the National League RBI lead at 86.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, FSN San Diego, ROOT (Colorado)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Ian Kennedy (7-10, 4.37 ERA) vs. Rockies LH Chris Rusin (3-5, 4.43)

Kennedy is 3-1 over his last five starts and has allowed two or fewer runs in four of them. He defeated the Cincinnati Reds in his last outing when he gave up one run and two hits in five innings. Kennedy is 6-4 with a 2.87 ERA in 19 career starts against Colorado - including a victory on May 1 when gave up two runs and four hits in six innings - and has fared well against outfielder Carlos Gonzalez (4-for-32, 15 strikeouts).

Rusin received a no-decision in his lone career start against the Padres when he tossed 6 1/3 innings of three-hit ball for the Chicago Cubs on Aug. 25, 2013. He is winless over his past nine starts - losing three times - while allowing two or fewer earned runs in six of the outings. Rusin lost to the New York Mets in his last turn despite giving up only one run and eight hits in six innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Padres LF Justin Upton had two hits Saturday to extend his hitting streak to eight games.

2. Colorado CF Charlie Blackmon is 4-for-8 in the series after going 3-for-30 over the previous eight games.

3. San Diego RF Matt Kemp hit a sacrifice fly Saturday for his eighth RBI over the past three contests.

Preview: Angels at Royals

GAME: Los Angeles Angels (60-56) at Kansas City Royals (70-46)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 16 - 8:08 PM EST
WHERE: Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri
LINE: 117, -127 TOTAL: 8

While the first-place Royals have all but locked up their first American League Central title since 1985, the Los Angeles Angels continue to fight for their playoff lives as they try to salvage a four-game series split on Sunday in Kansas City. After an unlikely rally against the vaunted Royals' bullpen in the series opener, Los Angeles dropped the next two, including a 9-4 loss on Saturday which trimmed its lead over Baltimore for the second wild-card spot to one-half game.

The Angels, who are 2 1/2 games behind first-place Houston in the AL West, fell to 1-5 on their seven-game road trip and have scored 16 runs during that span. Kansas City has no such issues as it sits 12 games ahead of Minnesota in the Central and has scored 48 runs while going 7-2 in the first nine contests of its 10-game homestand. Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer has driven in a run in nine consecutive games - the longest active streak in the majors - and leads baseball in average (.395) and runs scored (27) since the All-Star break. Kansas City's Yordano Ventura won his last outing despite tying a career high with six walks as he opposes Hector Santiago, who is winless in four starts (0-2).

TV: 8:08 p.m. ET, ESPN

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals LH Hector Santiago (7-6, 2.87 ERA) vs. Royals RH Yordano Ventura (7-7, 4.97)

Santiago allowed three runs in 5 1/3 innings of a 3-0 loss to the White Sox in Chicago on Tuesday and has permitted three or more runs in four consecutive appearances after doing so once in his previous eight turns. The 27-year-old New Jersey native could be starting to wear down as the former reliever has pitched 134 2/3 innings this season - 14 1/3 shy of his career high - and hasn't worked more than six frames in five straight outings. Santiago is 1-1 with a 1.53 ERA in 11 games (1-1, 1.93 in five starts) against Kansas City, including a 4-2 loss on April 10.

Ventura overcame his bout with wildness by allowing two hits and matching a season high with eight strikeouts in six scoreless innings of a 6-1 victory over Detroit on Tuesday. "(He) stayed calm and continued to make pitches all night. He wasn't crazy-wild. He was just missing,'' Royals manager Ned Yost told reporters about the 24-year-old Dominican. "He was aggressively into the game. You could tell by his body language. He was the old Ventura of last year - he had all the confidence that, 'Hey, you can get a couple guys on, but that's as far as it's going to go.'" Ventura is 1-1 with a 3.72 ERA in two starts against Los Angeles, including a 5-2 victory on April 12.

WALK-OFFS

1. Angels SS Erick Aybar (back) missed the first three games of the series but could play in the finale after fielding grounders Saturday.

2. Kansas City is 18-5 in its last 23 games at Kauffman Stadium and leads the AL with 41 victories at home.

3. Los Angeles 1B Albert Pujols on Saturday hit his 31st home run to end a season-high 14-game drought.
