Preview: Padres at Nationals

GAME: San Diego Padres (42-56) at Washington Nationals (58-40)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 24 - 1:35 PM EST
WHERE: Nationals Park, Washington, District of Columbia
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Washington Nationals will call up top pitching prospect Lucas Giolito for the second time this season when it takes on the visiting San Diego Padres in the rubber match of a three-game set Sunday afternoon. Giolito will take the place of fellow youngster Reynaldo Lopez, looking to build on a brief stint in the majors prior to the All-Star break.

He might not be able to expect much run support, as the Nationals have put up exactly three runs in three straight games, although it was just enough to steal Saturday night's matchup by a run. Stephen Drew's pinch-hit RBI triple with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Washington a 4-4 record on its current nine-game homestand and maintained the club's 4 1/2-game lead in the National League East. Left fielder Jayson Werth has reached safely in 27 straight games, the longest current run in baseball, while Daniel Murphy has a 10-game hitting streak for the Nationals and continues to lead the NL in hitting (.349) by a wide margin over teammate Wilson Ramos (.331). Matt Kemp had two more hits for the Padres on Saturday and is 11-for-33 with six home runs since the All-Star break.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, FSN San Diego, MASN (Washington), WUSA 9 (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres LH Christian Friedrich (4-6, 4.55 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Lucas Giolito (0-0, 4.70)

Friedrich has lost four straight starts and failed to get through six innings in each of his last five outings. He gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits and five walks in 5 1/3 frames of a setback at St. Louis on Monday. The 29-year-old was reached for six runs and a season high-tying nine hits in six innings of work at home against Washington on June 17, which left him 0-3 with a 12.00 ERA in his career versus the Nationals.

Giolito is returning to Washington after making one start at the Single-A level and another for Triple-A Syracuse in which he gave up one unearned run in 6 2/3 impressive innings. The former first-round selection walked six batters and fanned five in 7 2/3 innings over the course of his first two major-league outings - both against the New York Mets. He yielded one hit - a single - in four scoreless frames in his lone start at Nationals Park.

WALK-OFFS

1. Washington is 4-8 against the NL West and 54-32 against all other opponents.

2. Nationals RF Bryce Harper, MLB's runaway winner last year in slugging percentage (.649), has one extra-base hit in an 11-game span.

3. Padres 1B Wil Myers is 2-for-26 with 12 strikeouts over his last seven games.

GAME: Cleveland Indians (56-40) at Baltimore Orioles (56-40)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 24 - 1:35 PM EST
WHERE: Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, Maryland
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Baltimore Orioles and Cleveland Indians both knew their head-to-head battle this weekend could be a preview of the American League Championship Series, but only the former is playing like it's October at the moment. The Orioles aim for a three-game home sweep of the Indians as the division leaders conclude their season series on Sunday.

With a homer in each game and a total of five RBIs, Mark Trumbo has driven in more runs himself than Cleveland has been able to muster (three) in this series, while Baltimore's beleaguered starting pitchers (5.01 ERA) have outdueled the Indians' vaunted rotation (AL-best 3.62) thus far. Dylan Bundy did not allow an earned run over five innings in Friday's 5-1 victory and Kevin Gausman followed with seven scoreless frames in Saturday's 5-2 win. Central-leading Cleveland once again will put the AL's best road record (30-24) on the line against the majors' best home team (35-14), hoping it can rediscover the offense that allowed it to pile up 18 runs on Kansas City over the last two contests of its previous series. The Indians also need to win in order to avoid losing five of six against the East-leading Orioles for the second straight season.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland), MASN2, WJZ (Baltimore)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Corey Kluber (9-8, 3.42 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Vance Worley (2-1, 3.16)

Kluber fanned eight over seven scoreless innings at Kansas City on Monday before leaving with a right calf cramp, then watched his bullpen implode in the eighth, keeping him from winning for the fourth time in five outings. The former Cy Young Award winner has given up only run over his last 15 innings and has posted a 2.04 ERA over his last five turns. Kluber struck out 10 Orioles in seven frames of a no-decision in June 2015 and is 1-1 with a 3.42 ERA in four career starts against Baltimore.

Worley took the loss against the New York Yankees on Tuesday, giving up three runs on three hits and four walks while throwing a season-high 88 pitches to get through 4 1/3 innings. The Long Beach State product, who made his first start since April 15, is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA in three turns through the rotation, as opposed to 1-0, 2.23 in 18 relief outings. Worley held his own in long relief versus the Indians on May 28, giving up two runs - one earned - over 4 1/3 innings in his first career appearance against them.

WALK-OFFS

1. Orioles LHP Zach Britton is 32-for-32 in save opportunities this season, tying the major-league record for the longest save streak in as many chances to start a season by a left-handed pitcher.

2. Indians 1B Mike Napoli is 0-for-7 with six strikeouts in this series and batting .210 with 87 strikeouts on the road this season (as opposed to .292 with 42 strikeouts at home).

3. Baltimore C Matt Wieters (foot) missed a fifth straight game Saturday, but manager Buck Showalter told reporters he hopes to have him back Monday.

Preview: Twins at Red Sox

GAME: Minnesota Twins (37-60) at Boston Red Sox (54-41)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 24 - 1:35 PM EST
WHERE: Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Boston Red Sox are winners of five straight series but are in danger of that streak coming to an end against the worst team in the American League. The Red Sox will try to squeeze out a split of the four-game series when they host the Minnesota Twins in the finale on Sunday.

Boston took the series opener 13-2 on Thursday to win for the ninth time in 10 games and pull ahead of the Baltimore Orioles in the AL East. The Red Sox suffered through two very different setbacks in the next two games – a 2-1 loss on Friday and an 11-9 decision on Saturday – to fall 1 1/2 games behind the Orioles and continue the questions the team has had about the bullpen for last two months. The Twins pounded out 19 hits in Saturday’s triumph and have won four of their last five games as the players audition for a new general manager. Interim GM Rob Antony took over the team earlier this week when Terry Ryan was let go and has his work cut out for him as the team plans for the future with the trade deadline approaching on Aug. 1.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, FSN North (Minnesota), NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins LHP Tommy Milone (3-2, 4.71 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Rick Porcello (12-2, 3.47)

Milone has won his last three starts and is coming off the best of the bunch after holding the Detroit Tigers to two runs and four hits in 8 1/3 innings on Tuesday. The California native surrendered five runs in 19 1/3 innings over those three turns. Milone has never beaten the Red Sox and is 0-2 with a 9.64 ERA in four starts against them in his career.

Porcello earned the win in each of his last four starts and has not absorbed a loss since May 17 at Kansas City. The New Jersey native scattered four hits over 6 1/3 scoreless innings against San Francisco on Tuesday for his fourth straight quality start. Porcello was reached for four runs – one earned – over seven innings without factoring in the decision at Minnesota on June 12.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Red Sox optioned RHP Heath Hembree to Triple-A Pawtucket following Saturday’s loss.

2. Twins C Kurt Suzuki left Saturday after taking a foul tip to the facemask and is not expected to start on Sunday.

3. Boston RF Mookie Betts (knee) had an MRI come back showing no structural damage and is day-to-day.

Preview: Tigers at White Sox

GAME: Detroit Tigers (51-46) at Chicago White Sox (46-50)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 24 - 2:10 PM EST
WHERE: U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago, Illinois
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Chris Sale could be changing uniforms by the trade deadline, but his apparent distaste for his own uniform has put the Chicago White Sox in a rough spot heading into the last day of a four-game set with the visiting Detroit Tigers. Saturday's game was suspended due to rain with the teams tied after eight innings and will resume at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday - to be followed by the finale of the series.

Sale was scheduled to start Saturday's game but was sent home by the White Sox for a "non-physical" incident in the clubhouse, which reportedly was due to cutting up Chicago's throwback uniforms, multiple media outlets reported. With its 14-game winner banished, Chicago used six relievers Saturday after going through a half-dozen bullpen arms in Friday's contest. Despite the strain on his pitching staff, manager Robin Ventura said Sale is not an option to start Sunday for the White Sox, who have lost seven of eight since the All-Star break. Justin Upton homered and Nick Castellano recorded an RBI single before the rains came to forge a late tie for Detroit, which is 5 1/2 games behind first-place Cleveland in the American League Central.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, WGN (Chicago)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Anibal Sánchez (5-11, 6.60 ERA) vs. White Sox LH José Quintana (8-8, 3.13)

Although he's lost three consecutive starts, Sanchez provided a glimmer of hope in his last outing, striking out a season-high 10 while allowing three runs and seven hits over six innings in a loss to Minnesota. He was hit hard in his previous two turns, giving up a combined 12 runs and failing to get past 4 1/3 frames in each. Already banished to the bullpen twice this season, he's 2-6 lifetime with a 5.26 ERA versus Chicago.

Quintana won his third straight start in Seattle last time out, striking out seven and permitting one run over six innings. The winning streak following a nine-start drought for the 27-year-old Colombian, who was 0-6 during a dry spell that lasted nearly two months. Victor Martinez (14-for-33), Miguel Cabrera (13-for-35) and Mike Aviles (10-for-26) have hurt Quintana, who gave up five runs in 4 2/3 innings at Detroit last month.

WALK-OFFS

1. Martinez has received four intentional walks in the series.

2. White Sox DH Avisail Garcia homered Saturday, his first blast since May 28.

3. Upton's homer was his first in 53 career at-bats versus Chicago.

GAME: Los Angeles Angels (43-54) at Houston Astros (53-44)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 24 - 2:10 PM EST
WHERE: Minute Maid Park, Houston, Texas
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Houston Astros are off to a strong start on their six-game homestand and will try to pull off a clean sweep when they host the Los Angeles Angels in the finale of a three-game series on Sunday. The Astros are winners of three straight overall and the pitching staff allowed a total of three runs in those victories.

Houston has pulled to within 2 1/2 games of the American League West-leading Texas Rangers, thanks in part to its dominance over the Angels. The Astros took their 10th straight in the series behind two home runs from Evan Gattis in Saturday’s 7-2 triumph to mark the franchise’s longest winning streak against any AL opponent. Los Angeles did Houston a big favor by sweeping a three-game series against the Rangers earlier this week and averaged 6.7 runs during a six-game winning streak before running into the Astros. The Angels could use more from the best hitters in their lineup, but Mike Trout and Albert Pujols are a combined 0-for-14 with eight strikeouts in the series.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, FSN West (Los Angeles), ROOT (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH Tim Lincecum (2-3, 6.59 ERA) vs. Astros RH Mike Fiers (6-4, 4.75)

Lincecum allowed one run over six innings in his Los Angeles debut on June 18 but has not gone six frames or yielded fewer than three runs in any of his subsequent five turns. The former Cy Young Award winner was reached for five runs – three earned – on nine hits in five innings on Tuesday but struck out seven and managed to come away with the win. Lincecum is 5-1 with a 1.60 ERA in 10 career starts against Houston, but the one loss came on June 28 when he was ripped for five runs in 4 1/3 frames.

Fiers struggled in each of his last two outings, yielding a total of 10 runs on 10 hits and five walks in seven innings. The Florida native completed six innings only once in his last five outings. Fiers suffered through his worst start of the season at Los Angeles on May 27, when he was ripped for seven runs on eight hits and a pair of walks in 3 2/3 frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. Astros C Jason Castro (hand) sat out Saturday and is day-to-day.

2. Los Angeles SS Andrelton Simmons is 6-for-12 in the last three games.

3. Houston signed 22-year-old Cuban SS Anibal Sierra.

GAME: Chicago Cubs (58-38) at Milwaukee Brewers (41-54)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 24 - 2:10 PM EST
WHERE: Miller Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Sellout crowds peppered with Chicago Cubs fans have made the past two games at Miller Park feel like Wrigley Field North, and the National League Central leaders expect more of the same Sunday in the finale of a three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cubs are aiming for their third straight series win to begin the second half, while the Brewers are trying to lock down their first series victory at home since June 24-26.

The Cubs (58-38) have built the best record in the majors in part because of their solid play on the road, but the atmosphere in Milwaukee is hardly hostile to the visiting Cubs. The Brewers were less hospitable Saturday, though, as Chicago managed just six hits in a 6-1 defeat that evened the series at a game apiece. Chicago left-hander Jon Lester, who is 5-2 with a 3.67 ERA in 10 road starts this season, is set to make his Miller Park debut against Milwaukee right-hander Junior Guerra. Guerra is 4-2 with a 2.76 ERA in seven home outings.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, ABC 7 (Chicago), FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs LH Jon Lester (10-4, 2.89 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Junior Guerra (6-2, 3.06)

Lester turned in a couple of clunkers to close out the first half, allowing 13 runs over 4 1/3 innings in his last two starts before the All-Star break. The 32-year-old returned to form Monday against the New York Mets, limiting them to one run and four hits over 7 2/3 innings to earn his first win since June 18. Lester is 2-2 with a 2.22 ERA in four starts against the Brewers and won both meetings last season.

Guerra has been a pleasant surprise for the Brewers, recording quality starts in nine of his 14 outings, including four of his past five. The 31-year-old rookie hasn’t had much run support lately, as the Brewers have totaled four runs in his last three starts, and he didn’t get a decision last time out despite allowing two runs and three hits in six innings of a 3-2 loss Tuesday at Pittsburgh. Guerra beat the Cubs on May 19, racking up a career-high 11 strikeouts while allowing three runs over seven frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. Chicago is expected to add RHP Joe Nathan to its bullpen Sunday after the longtime closer completed a minor-league rehab assignment in his return from Tommy John surgery.

2. Milwaukee LF Ryan Braun, who is 5-for-13 versus Lester, is batting .367 during an eight-game hitting streak.

3. The Cubs have stolen a base in a season-high seven consecutive games - their longest streak since 1989 - after recording just five steals over their previous 24 contests.

GAME: Texas Rangers (56-42) at Kansas City Royals (48-48)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 24 - 2:15 PM EST
WHERE: Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The American League West-leading Texas Rangers attempt to end their disappointing road trip on a high note when they visit the Kansas City Royals on Sunday for the rubber match of their three-game set. Texas fell to 1-6 on its nine-game trek with a 3-1 loss in the series opener but bounced back to post a 7-4 victory on Saturday behind the duo of Nomar Mazara and Adrian Beltre, who combined to go 5-for-9 with two home runs and six RBIs.

Mazara is riding a five-game hitting streak during which he is 8-for-17. Kansas City's nine-game homestand is not going as well as planned, with the team falling to 2-3 with Saturday's setback. Paulo Orlando appears to be in a zone when facing Texas pitching as he is 5-for-7 over the first two games of the series after collecting three hits on Saturday. The reigning world champion Royals have a lot of ground to make up if they hope for the chance to defend their crown as they trail Cleveland by eight games for first place in the AL Central and are five behind Toronto in the race for the second wild-card spot.

TV: 2:15 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (Texas), FSN Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers RH A.J. Griffin (3-1, 4.26 ERA) vs. Royals RH Edinson Volquez (8-8, 4.72)

Griffin's winless streak reached seven starts on Monday as he escaped with a no-decision against the Angels in Los Angeles after yielding five runs on four hits and three walks over five innings. The 28-year-old Californian was even less effective in his previous outing, a loss to Minnesota on July 10 in which he surrendered six runs and nine hits over five frames. Griffin, who is in his first season in the major leagues since 2013 with Oakland due to Tommy John surgery, is 1-0 with a 4.09 ERA in two career starts against Kansas City.

Volquez did not factor in the decision against Cleveland on Monday despite allowing only two runs and four hits over seven innings. The 33-year-old Dominican has won just one of his last five starts but has worked at least six frames four times in that span. Volquez has yet to defeat Texas in his career, going 0-2 with a ghastly 8.22 ERA in three outings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Royals LF Alex Gordon is 5-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs against Griffin in his career.

2. Beltre's home run on Saturday was the 427th of his career, tying him with Mike Piazza and Miguel Cabrera for 47th place on the all-time list.

3. Kansas City 3B Cheslor Cuthbert has recorded six two-hit performances and collected nine RBIs during his 12-game hitting streak.

GAME: Tampa Bay Rays (38-59) at Oakland Athletics (44-54)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 24 - 4:05 PM EST
WHERE: Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Oakland Athletics fell out of playoff contention months ago and figure to be active sellers at the trade deadline, but they haven't lost their flair for the dramatic. After following a series-opening loss with consecutive one-run victories, the Athletics conclude their 10-game homestand Sunday against the visiting Tampa Bay Rays, who are 7-31 since June 16.

Eight of Oakland’s last 12 games have been decided by one run, including Saturday's wild 4-3 victory in which Jake Smolinski belted a two-run homer in the ninth inning and rookie Ryon Healy delivered a walk-off blast two batters later. The 6-foot-5, 225-pound Healy was called up from Triple-A Nashville on July 15 and has started the last nine games at third base, where he’ll receive an extended look over the next two months. The Rays have received five straight quality starts from their pitchers but have scored a total of three runs in their last two games. Steven Souza Jr. is 0-for-10 with five strikeouts in the series while Logan Morrison has missed the last five games with an injured forearm.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay), CSN California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays LH Blake Snell (2-4, 3.11 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Jesse Hahn (2-4, 6.49)

Snell turned in the best start of his rookie campaign on Tuesday at Coors Field, holding Colorado to one hit over six scoreless innings while recording a career-high nine strikeouts. The highly touted 23-year-old became the second visiting rookie in Coors Field history to pitch six or more scoreless frames and allow one hit or fewer. “I think he’s done a tremendous job of holding his own, competing, giving us chances to win,” manager Kevin Cash told reporters.

Hahn is being recalled from Triple-A Nashville to start in place of Rich Hill, who is battling a blister on his pitching hand. The 26-year-old is beginning his third stint with the Athletics this season after posting a 2.77 ERA over his last five outings for Nashville. “He’s been working on a lot of things, getting the ball down, incorporating his other pitches and so forth,” manager Bob Melvin told reporters. “Hopefully, this is the start of a nice run for him.”

WALK-OFFS

1. Oakland RF Josh Reddick is listed as day-to-day after being scratched from Saturday’s lineup with back stiffness.

2. Rays OF Oswaldo Arcia left Saturday’s game with a right elbow strain but is expected to be available Sunday.

3. Oakland placed C/1B Stephen Vogt on the family emergency medical leave list and recalled C Bruce Maxwell from Triple-A Nashville.

GAME: Atlanta Braves (33-65) at Colorado Rockies (46-51)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 24 - 4:10 PM EST
WHERE: Coors Field, Denver, Colorado
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Atlanta Braves wrap up their four-game series against the host Colorado Rockies on Sunday and will be more than happy to board a plane and fly to Minnesota for their next set. The Braves have dropped the first three games of the series, being outscored a combined 12-0 in the sixth inning, and have lost their last nine contests at Coors Field.

Atlanta squandered a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning of Saturday’s 8-4 loss, a frame featuring three walks, a wild pitch and four hits that resulted in its seventh loss in nine games since the All-Star break. Colorado’s Trevor Story continues to lead all major-league rookies in home runs and RBIs, going 4-for-4 with his 25th and 26th blasts while driving in five runs on Saturday. The Rockies improved to 6-3 since the break and their rotation has made 49 quality starts – 13 this month – after ranking last in the majors (54) in 2015. Colorado is 36-15 when scoring five or more runs and raised its home record to 24-24 with Saturday’s triumph.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, FSN South (Atlanta), ROOT (Colorado)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Tyrell Jenkins (0-1, 4.05 ERA) vs. Rockies RH Tyler Chatwood (8-6, 3.83)

The Braves promoted Jenkins to the bullpen, but in two spot starts, the 24-year-old has impressed with his ability to overcome control problems. He was in line for his first major-league victory Tuesday at Cincinnati, allowing two runs and four hits over six frames, before Atlanta blew a ninth-inning lead. Jenkins, who has a 2.53 ERA and a .211 opponents’ batting average in his two starts, does not miss many bats while relying on a fastball, curveball and changeup as he has struck out nine in 20 innings.

The mile-high air of Denver has been anything but kind to Chatwood, who is 3-6 with a 6.26 ERA and seven homers allowed in nine home starts. The 26-year-old, who primarily throws a fastball and a slider (89.1 percent of his pitches this year), has surrendered 11 runs and 16 hits over eight innings in his last two outings - home losses to Philadelphia and Tampa Bay in which his fastball command was inconsistent. Chatwood is 1-2 with an 8.35 ERA in four career starts against the Braves but has not faced them since 2013.

WALK-OFFS

1. Colorado CF Charlie Blackmon went hitless in five at-bats Saturday, ending his hitting streak at 14 games.

2. Atlanta 3B Adonis Garcia is the team's hottest hitter of late, extending his hitting streak to seven games Saturday, and has reached base via hit or walk in each of his last 15 contests.

3. Braves 1B Freddie Freeman, who hit his sixth triple of the season Saturday, came into the year with eight in 751 career games.

GAME: Los Angeles Dodgers (55-44) at St. Louis Cardinals (52-45)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 24 - 8:08 PM EST
WHERE: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Los Angeles Dodgers look to conclude their road trip with a winning record when they visit the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday night for the rubber match of their three-game set. Los Angeles dropped the series opener in 16 innings before rallying for four runs in the third inning and three in the sixth en route to a 7-2 triumph on Saturday that evened its record on the trek at 4-4.

Corey Seager is riding a seven-game hitting streak during which he is 14-for-35 while Justin Turner is 14-for-37 with five home runs and 14 RBIs over the first eight games of the Dodgers' trip. St. Louis managed only six hits as its winning streak ended at five games. Aledmys Diaz had his string of four straight two-hit performances come to a halt, but the 25-year-old Cuban did record a single Saturday to run his hitting streak to five contests. The Cardinals are 6-3 on their 10-game homestand and trail Miami by one game and Los Angeles by two for wild-card spots in the National League.

TV: 8:08 p.m. ET, ESPN

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers LH Scott Kazmir (8-3, 4.30 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Mike Mayers (NR)

Kazmir won his sixth consecutive decision on Tuesday as he allowed one run and four hits while registering eight strikeouts in seven innings at Washington. The 32-year-old native of Houston is unbeaten in his last 12 starts, last losing on May 9 to the New York Mets. Kazmir produced his longest outing of the season five days later against St. Louis, giving up three runs - two earned - and five hits over 8 2/3 frames to improve to 2-0 with a 3.20 ERA in three career starts versus the Cardinals.

Mayers was scheduled to start for Triple-A Memphis on Saturday but instead was brought up to make his major-league debut. "I'm looking to pitch well, and whatever happens after that is out of my control," the 24-year-old from Ohio told the Cardinals' website. "But hopefully I can make a good impression that will stick in their head a little bit." Mayers has split this season between Memphis and Double-A Springfield, going a combined 8-5 with a 2.62 ERA in 18 starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cardinals OF Matt Holliday is 4-for-13 lifetime against Kazmir, with half of the hits being solo home runs.

2. Los Angeles 1B Adrian Gonzalez has hit safely in 17 of his last 18 games at Busch Stadium.

3. Seven of St. Louis 1B Matt Adams' last eight hits have been for extra bases.
