Preview: Red Sox (42-49) at Angels (50-40)

Game: 3
Venue: Angel Stadium of Anaheim
Date: July 19, 2015 8:05 PM EDT

Hector Santiago didn't have the opportunity to pitch in this week's All-Star Game, but he gets another chance to show why he was worthy of being part of the festivities.

The left-hander tries to win a third straight start and help the Los Angeles Angels extend their pitching dominance over the visiting Boston Red Sox on Sunday.

Among baseball's biggest surprises, Santiago (6-4, 2.33 ERA) is 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA in his last four starts. The Angels (50-40) have scored 20 runs while he's allowed one in 14 innings of his two outings this month.

Santiago, who joined stars Mike Trout and Albert Pujols in Cincinnati this week, didn't play Tuesday but seems more concerned with continuing his success and helping Los Angeles maintain its lead atop the AL West.

"Now I know what I can do," Santiago, who went 10-16 with a 3.63 ERA in 51 starts over his previous three seasons, told MLB's official website. "Before, I was kind of like an average pitcher. I think I had the stuff to be a good pitcher; I just never put it together. I never put the actual pitcher and thrower together and made it one. And now, I've kind of evolved to a pitcher."

Santiago allowed three runs and seven hits in 6 2-3 innings of a 6-1 loss to the Red Sox on May 24 to fall to 0-3 with a 3.63 ERA in four starts against Boston (42-49).

The Red Sox, however, have been limited to seven hits while being shut out in the first two of this four-game set.

'Hitting is something that's a continuation of what you do the day before," Red Sox slugger David Ortiz said. "The four days off affected pretty much everybody around here, so hopefully we'll bounce back.'

Pablo Sandoval had both Boston hits off Garrett Richards in Saturday's 3-0 loss.

Xander Bogaerts is 3 for 5 with a double against Santiago. He batted .404 with 10 RBIs during an 11-game hitting streak that ended Saturday.

Dustin Pedroia went 0 for 8 in the first two games after missing almost a month with hamstring tightness, but is 4 for 9 with three doubles versus Santiago.

Making his first appearance against the Angels, rookie Eduardo Rodriguez (5-2, 3.59) is 3-0 with an 0.69 ERA in his first four career road starts. The left-hander also entered the break 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA in his last three overall.

"We continue to learn a lot about him," manager John Farrell said after Rodriguez allowed a pair of solo homers in 6 1-3 innings of a 5-3 win over the New York Yankees on July 11. "He continues to grow each time he walks to the mound."

Rodriguez will try to contain pesky leadoff hitter Kole Calhoun, who homered twice Saturday and is batting .340 with two home runs and eight RBIs in 13 career games against the Red Sox.

'We definitely have some superstars on this team, but we're not going to have them do it every night,' said Calhoun, who is five homers shy of his career-high 17 set last year. 'It's been a good month for us so far, and we've just got to keep it going.'

Holy $hit Betting Stat of the Day: Greinke has been impenetrable in day games
By STEPHEN CAMPBELL

There's no debating Zack Greinke's importance to the Los Angeles Dodgers this season, but he's been particularly exceptional during daytime games.

In three matinee starts, Greinke is 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 22.2 innings of work. The 31-year-old has allowed 13 hits while fanning 17 batters during that span.

Greinke has also won all three of his July outings without allowing an earned run. He'll get the nod Sunday in D.C. against Max Scherzer and the Washington Nationals at 1:35 p.m. ET.

As of this writing, the line and total were off the board.

MLB betting cheat sheet: Sluggin' Tigers could easily continue Over trend
By JESSE SCHULE

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the weekend major-league schedule:

Trout Flashes Power

Mike Trout tied Giancarlo Stanton for the major league lead with his 27th home run on Friday, and it was a walkoff winner in a 1-0 game versus Boston. Trout has gone deep six times in his last seven games, and he's hitting .366 so far in July. He's hitting .325 versus southpaws this season, and he'll face a young left-hander on Sunday. He'll get a look at the struggling Rick Porcello on Saturday, and he's hit .333 with a home run and 17 RBIs in 16 career at bats versus the right-hander.

Ferocious Tigers

The Detroit Tigers may not be getting the W's lately, but it certainly hasn't been because of a lack of production at the plate. The Tigers lead the majors in scoring with 74 runs in 13 game in July, and a team batting average of .309 during that span. Those numbers are particularly impressive when you consider that Miguel Cabrera has been on the DL since July 3. Victor Martinez has helped fill the void, he's hitting .339 with four home runs and seven RBIs so far this month.

PETCO Now Hitter Friendly?

Over the last few years, we've come to think of San Diego's PETCO Park as one of the most pitcher friendly in the majors. That's quickly becoming a myth here in 2015. Friday's game failed to go over the total, but we did see four home runs in that game (all solo shots). According to ESPN Park Factors, PETCO ranks 5th behind Coors Field, Great American Ballpark, Camden Yards and Yankee Stadium. You don't often see totals of 6.5 in any of those parks, but low totals are still the norm in San Diego.

Pitching Notes

*If you haven't heard of Taylor Jungmann, it's probably only a matter of time. The 25 year old right-hander has been raising plenty of eyebrows in his rookie season in Milwaukee. He's 4-1 with a 2.15 ERA in seven starts, and his two most recent outings have been his most impressive. He went the distance, allowing one run on three hits in a win over the Dodgers in LA, and prior to that he tossed eight strong innings, allowing one run on four hits in a win at Cincinnati. His next start will come at home on Sunday opposite Jeff Locke in Game 3 versus the Pirates.

Totals Streak

The Tigers played 19 straight overs before they landed in Minnesota for their final series before the All Star break. They saw 2-of-4 games fall short of the number in that series, but after last night's 7-3 home win over the Orioles, they've now seen the total go over in 22-of-24. They give us little reason to suspect this trend won't continue, as they have led the majors in scoring in July, and their pitching staff has struggled. We could see a few more slugfests in the Motor City over the weekend.

Injury Notes

*Dee Gordon has been having a breakout season in Miami, sitting near the top of the National League in batting average for most of the season. With Giancarlo Stanton already sidelined with a broken bone in his hand, the Marlins can ill afford to lose Gordon. The Marlins have placed Gordon on the 15 day DL with a dislocated thumb.

*Matt Holiday returned to action for the Cardinals in Friday's series opener versus the Mets. He was 0-for-3 in the game, and could be a little rusty after sitting out the last five weeks.

MLB roundup: Lester toys with no-no, Cubs beat Braves
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

ATLANTA -- Jon Lester snapped a pair of losing streaks while taking a no-hit bid into the eighth inning in the process.

The left-hander ended up allowing two singles over 7 1/3 innings and Chicago Cubs defeated the Atlanta Braves 4-0 on Saturday night before 45,758 at Turner Field.

The victory snapped a six-game losing streak for Lester, who hadn't won since May 16, and ended a stretch of eight consecutive losses by the Cubs in Atlanta.

Catcher A.J. Pierzynski broke up the no-hit bid by Lester when he lined a 1-0 belt-high cutter into right field leading off the eighth inning.

Third baseman Juan Uribe then hit a long drive to center field and Lester was pulled after 110 pitches when shortstop Andrelton Simmons followed with a single.

Athletics 3, Twins 2, 10 innings

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Billy Burns doubled, stole third and scored when All-Star Stephen Vogt singled through a drawn-in infield to give Oakland the win over Minnesota.

The A's won for the third time in four games with their second walk-off win of the year against Casey Fein.

Drew Pomeranz earned the win for the A's.

Padres 5, Rockies 4

SAN DIEGO -- Home runs by Clint Barmes and Austin Hedges led San Diego past Colorado at Petco Park.

Barmes, a former Rockies shortstop, smacked a two-run shot in the seventh inning off reliever Tommy Kahnle to break the 3-3 tie. It was the Padres' fifth homer in 16 innings as they won their season-high fifth straight game.

Brandon Mauer recorded an out in the seventh for the win. Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in the ninth for his 25th save in 26 chances.

Giants 8, Diamondbacks 4

PHOENIX -- San Francisco's Buster Posey had three hits and four RBIs and Jake Peavy got his first win of the season at Chase Field.

Posey hit a two-run single in the third inning and singled in a run in the fourth as the Giants built a 7-1 lead. He also singled in a run in the eighth inning as the Giants won their fourth straight.

Peavy gave up four runs in 6 1/3 innings in his fifth start of the season since missing two months with a back injury. His last three victories have come against Arizona, the previous two on Sept. 11 and Sept. 16, 2014.

Angels 3, Red Sox 0

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Garrett Richards pitched a two-hit shutout to lead Los Angeles Angels over Boston in front of 43,631 at Angel Stadium.

Richards retired the final 15 batters he faced and 22 of the last 23. He induced 11 groundouts and registered six strikeouts while conceding only one walk.

Kole Calhoun contributed the first multihomer game of his career. Calhoun hit two home runs and drove in two runs before finishing 3-for-3 with a walk.

Dodgers 4, Nationals 2

Nationals 5, Dodgers 3 (suspended game)

WASHINGTON -- All-Star Clayton Kershaw, pitching in the shadows late in the afternoon, struck out a season-high 14 batters with no walks and allowed three singles in eight innings as Los Angeles beat Washington Nationals before a sellout crowd of 41,426.

In the suspended game that ended earlier Saturday, the Nationals won 5-3 when pinch-hitter Matt den Dekker hit a tie-breaking two-run home run in the eighth inning.

It was the 15th win in 21 games for Washington.

But the Nationals were no match for Kershaw later in the day, as he fanned two batters in each of the first seven innings. He struck out Bryce Harper, a fellow All-Star, all three times.

Kershaw leads the National League with 174 strikeouts and has fanned 27 batters in his last two starts with no walks. His 100th pitch of the day was a curve at 73 mph for a called third strike against Den Dekker with two out in the eighth.

Phillies 3, Marlins 1

PHILADELPHIA -- Chad Billingsley, continuing his comeback from arm problems, pitched five shutout innings as Philadelphia beat Miami.

It was the second victory in three starts for Billingsley, who missed nearly two seasons after undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2013. The former Los Angeles Dodger made three starts for the Phillies in May, then missed six weeks with a strained right shoulder.

He gave up several hard-hit balls but just four hits. He struck out two and walked one. Jonathan Papelbon worked a scoreless ninth for his 15th save in as many opportunities.

Orioles 3, Tigers 0

DETROIT -- Chris Tillman tossed eight scoreless innings, retiring the last 23 batters he faced, and All-Star Manny Machado homered to lead Baltimore over Detroit at Comerica Park.

Tillman gave up a leadoff single to second baseman Ian Kinsler and a one-out walk to Victor Martinez, then did not allow another runner.

Tillman also struck out a season high eight and is now 4-0 in his career against Detroit.

Indians 9, Reds 4

CINCINNATI – Cleveland's Corey Kluber limited Cincinnati to three runs and seven hits over 7-2/3 innings while Anthony DeSclafani gave up six runs and five extra-base hits, including a three-run home run by Michael Brantley and two-run shot by right fielder Brandon Moss.

Catcher Yan Gomes added his fourth homer, a three-shot off of Nate Adcock in the seventh, as the Indians matched their single-game season high in home runs while scoring their most runs since beating Texas, 12-3, on May 27.

Kluber, who was 1-5 in his previous eight starts, finished with one walk and five strikeouts as the Indians snapped a three-game losing streak.

Cardinals 12, Mets 2

ST. LOUIS -- Jason Heyward and the St. Louis offense broke out with an all-out assault in the run column.

Heyward went 5-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs as St. Louis bombed Mets starter Bartolo Colon for the second time this year in a rout at sold-out Busch Stadium.

Heyward finished his evening with a ground-ball single off reliever Alex Torres in the bottom of the eighth, accomplishing the second five-hit game of his career.

Rangers 7, Astros 6

HOUSTON -- Rougned Odor finished a double short of the cycle and sparked a ninth-inning rally that clinched Texas' win over Houston at Minute Maid Park.

After the Astros closed to within 5-4 with three runs in the eighth inning, all coming with two outs, Odor ignited a bench-clearing scrum when he exchanged words with Astros catcher Hank Conger. When the dust settled Odor laced a leadoff triple to straightaway center field and scored when third baseman Adrian Beltre followed with a one-out single. Right fielder Josh Hamilton, who recorded three hits in his final three at-bats, added a double to score Beltre.

Conger answered in the bottom of the ninth with a two-run, opposite-field home run off Shawn Tolleson. But Tolleson recovered to record three consecutive outs and notch his 14th save.

Brewers 8, Pirates 5

MILWAUKEE -- Jimmy Nelson struck out eight while Jonathan Lucory, Aramis Ramirez and Khris Davis hit home runs to power Milwaukee over Pittsburgh at Miller Park.

Nelson overcame a rough first inning to work into the seventh. He gave up seven hits and three walks and won for the fourth time in five starts.

Davis was a late scratch from the starting lineup but came on as a pinch-hitter in the seventh. He gave the Brewers an insurance run with a solo homer off right-hander Antonio Bastardo. Right-hander Francisco Rodriguez closed it out for his 21st save of the season.

Mariners 4, Yankees 3

NEW YORK -- Robinson Cano hit a pair of two-run homers against his former team, leading Seattle past New York.

Playing in his fifth game at Yankee Stadium since signing a 10-year, $240 million contract with Seattle, Cano heard boos each time his name was mentioned over the public address system.

While Yankee fans might have jeered Cano, there was nothing but cheers in the Seattle dugout for his two big swings. Both came against former Mariners product Michael Pineda's fastball and resulted in Cano's first multihome run game as a Mariner.

Royals 7, White Sox 6 (13 innings)

CHICAGO -- Kansas City coughed up three leads, but the fourth stood up.

After leading 3-0, 4-3 and 6-4, the Royals went ahead for good in the 13th inning on Lorenzo Cain's leadoff home run.

Chicago's Geovany Soto had nearly ended the game in the 12th with a long shot that hit the base of the wall in left-center field for a two-out double.

The White Sox were down to their final out in the ninth trailing 6-4 lead, but J.B. Shuck's double scored Gordon Beckham and Alexei Ramirez to send the game to extra innings.

Rays 3, Blue Jays 2

TORONTO -- Curt Casali led off the eighth inning with his second home run of the season to lift Tampa Bay over Toronto.

Casali's home run came on a 1-and-0 splitter from Blue Jays right-handed reliever Ryan Tepera (0-1).

Rays right-handed reliever Kevin Jepsen (2-5) pitched the seventh to pick up the win. After right-hander Brad Boxberger pitched the eighth for the Rays, left-hander Jake McGee pitched the ninth to earn his fourth save of the season.

Braves give Gonzalez a contract extension
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Braves ended any speculation about the future of manager Fredi Gonzalez on Friday when they extended his contract through 2016, with a club option for 2017.

Gonzalez has been the manager since 2011, when he followed mentor and Hall of Famer Bobby Cox. Gonzalez has a record of 401-337 (.543) in his four-plus seasons.

"I really appreciate it," said Gonzalez, who learned about the extension when the team was in Colorado before the All-Star Game, but couldn't say anything about it in public. "I love the organization. I love the way it's going."

Gonzalez was rewarded for his loyalty and willingness to avoid rocking the boat as the team tries to rebuild. The club has used 50 different players, matching the franchise record set in 2007.

"Fredi has been very loyal to the Braves," general manager John Hart said. "He knew we were going to make some tough, painful decisions, and Fredi wants to do what's in the best interest in the long-term for the Braves."

The club also gave each member of the major league coaching staff an extension through 2016.

"That's nice going on the coaches, too," Gonzalez said. "It's nice knowing they don't have to worry about 2016."

The move could signal upcoming roster moves. There have been rumors about the Braves being willing to move center fielder Cameron Maybin, first baseman-outfielder Kelly Johnson, third baseman Chris Johnson, third baseman Juan Uribe and catcher A.J. Pierzynski before the trade deadline.

Hart said the team would entertain all offers.

"We'll be here and we'll be talking," Hart said. "If we can't get something that will fit the plan for what we want, we won't make a move."

Mets must improve their offense somehow
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

ST. LOUIS -- Asked about the New York Mets' continued offensive struggles after a 3-2 loss Friday night in St. Louis, catcher Kevin Plawecki's comments were short and to the point.

"Just keep grinding," he said. "We've got to get more runs on the board."

If it were only that easy. New York is undermining some really good pitching with an offense that rivals only the putrid Philadelphia Phillies in terms of making outs. Its .233 average beats only Philadelphia, and the Mets have more strikeouts (698) than hits (693).

General manager Sandy Alderson is getting hammered by columnists demanding that he find another bat to put in the middle of a lineup that doesn't have much going for it. There are rumors connecting New York with San Diego's Justin Upton, as well as Oakland's Ben Zobrist.

Almost anything would look better than the lineup the Mets are running out there. For Friday night's game, they had just three batters hitting better than .243. Given the lack of hitting and scoring, it's a wonder they trail first-place Washington by just 2 1/2 games in the National League East.

Sooner, rather than later, New York needs an offensive upgrade. If one isn't forthcoming, no amount of grinding will help this bunch.

Yankees recall RHP Pinder
The Sports Xchange

The New York Yankees recalled right-hander Branden Pinder from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday.

Pinder has a 2.53 ERA in nine games over 10 2/3 innings earlier this season with the Yankees.

To make room for Pinder, the team optioned right-hander Bryan Mitchell to Triple-A. Mitchell has a 2.89 ERA in six games over 9 1/3 innings.

Padres' Luebke has another setback
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

SAN DIEGO -- Left-handed pitcher Cory Luebke, who has had two rounds of Tommy John surgery since he last pitched in the major Llagues early in the 2012 season, had his latest comeback attempt aborted Thursday when he had surgery to reroute a nerve in the elbow.

"The surgery was to take pressure off the nerve. It had slipped out of the tunnel built for it," Padres manager Pat Murphy said of Luebke's surgery before the Padres opened the second half Friday night against the Colorado Rockies at Petco Park.

Luebke had made seven one-inning appearances on a rehab assignment when he was shut down earlier this month after experiencing pain in his elbow. An MRI showed the nerve issue.

Murphy said it would take Luebke four to six weeks to rehab from this surgery, and he is expected to resume a throwing program before the end of the season.

Luebke was on the cusp of becoming one of the Padres' leading starters when he first damaged the UCL in his elbow. He was 3-1 with a 2.61 earned run average after five starts in 2012. His last major league start was on April 27, 2012.

Luebke's first round of elbow reconstruction surgery was May 23, 2012, by the late Dr. Lewis Yocum. His second round was performed on Feb. 18, 2014, by Dr. James Andrews.

Arrieta has been lights out during July for the Cubs
Justin Hartling

Jake Arrieta will be happy to get back to the mound after the All-Star break as the Chicago Cubs pitcher is 3-0 in his three starts in July.

The rightie has been pitching his best ball of the season with a 1.52 ERA and a 20/2 strikeout-to-walk ratio in his past three starts.

The Cubs visit the Atlanta Braves to end their three-game series Sunday.

'Runs at a Premium'

The eyes of baseball fans, as well as those focused on baseball betting, will be on the afternoon pitcher's duel between Max Scherzer and Zack Greinke at Nationals Park in Washington. Oddsmakers have noted the possibility of a low-scoring affair and have set the total at 6.5 runs. While some may be scared off at the low totals number that usually is a sign to jump in, so make the right call and take the 'Under'. Max Scherzer hasn't walked a batter in his last 38 2/3 innings and 'Under' has been the right play in eight of his last ten starts. Additionally, the 'Under' is 5-0-2 in Scherzer's career starts vs Dodgers. On the other side, Greinke leading the major leagues with a 1.39 ERA has gone 35 2/3 innings without surrendering a run. The 'Under' has also been the right choice in eight of Greinke's last ten trips to the mound and in all three of his starts vs Washington since joining Dodgers.

(911) COLORADO ROCKIES VS (912) SAN DIEGO PADRES

Take: Over

Reason: 10-Star High Roller Diamond Total, Padres/Rockies Over the total.
San Diego has a much improved offense this season and gets to tee-off some bad Colorado pitching. Andrew Cashner goes for San Diego but has been hittable all year giving up 4 or more run in six of his last eight starts. Cashner has a 3-10 record, 4.10 ERA and 1.34 WHIP. Cashner was stuck with the loss his last start, giving up four runs on three hits and two walks while striking out five in 7.2 innings against the Pirates. The over is 20-9-2 in the Padres last 31 home games. Colorado is in town, 7th in baseball in runs scored. Starter Kyle Kendrick (5.94 ERA) has struggled all year with opponents hitting .291 off him. The Over is 23-9-1 in the Rockies last 33 vs. the National League West. Play the Padres/Rockies Over the total.

Bonus Play Sunday

INDIANS (Carrasco) @ REDS (Cueto) 1:10 PM

Take: INDIANS +110

I like looking for matchups where I can get a price with the better pitcher based on the analytics I find useful. This is not an auto-play by any means, just a starting point in determining possible value.

In this instance, the old school data says it’s Cueto all the way over Carrasco. But upon further review utilizing the new school information, that’s not necessarily the case. While Cueto owns the significantly lower ERA, it’s actually Carrasco with the better digits on the analytics scale.

Beyond the starting pitching, and again utilizing the metrics I tend to focus on, the Indians have advantages in several categories over the Reds. It’s not blowout material by any stretch, but if you want lopsided advantages, you’ll only be playing big chalk for the most part, and that’s not a recipe for long haul success in baseball.

It’s going to be easy for many bettors to make a case for the Reds here. Cueto does indeed have the stellar ERA and his career numbers against the Reds are enviable. Carrasco doesn’t have the star power his rival owns and it’s not like the Indians have been a good road team.

Nevertheless, backing dogs who own a higher ERA but win the key metrics I employ produce decent long term profits and Carrasco fits the bill on that count today. With the Cleveland side also getting its share of head to head team checkmarks against the Reds, I’ll choose the Indians for the Sunday Bonus Play.

Miami Marlins vs Philadelphia Phillies

Bonus Play Philadelphia Phillies

I'm backing the Phillies on Sunday. Two players on the trading radar are both looking for big outings on Sunday. Ryan Howard has been red-hot at the plate, while Cole Hamels, having another strong season, will be looking to atone for a rare poor outing in his last start before the all-star break. Hamels owns a 2.33 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, and a .190 BAA in eight home starts this season, allowing two earned runs or less in seven straight at Citizens Bank Park. The Phils actually have a winning record in those seven outings. Hamels came into the season with a 2.85 ERA & 1.09 WHIP in his previous 15 starts against the Marlins and threw six shutout innings in a home start against them in April. Dan Haren has pitched well in 2015, but he has not pitched well at this park. Haren went into 2015 having been tagged for a 1.59 WHIP and .294 BAA in his previous three season's at this venue. He fared poorly in his lone 2015 start here in April and I expect more of the same, having struggled against Ben Revere and Howard. Miami has won just 16 of their last 54 as road dogs and they're on a 0-6 slide on the road against left-handers. I'm backing the Phillies and Hamels on Sunday. Thanks & GL! Scott Spreitzer.

Texas Rangers vs Houston Astros

8* Free Pick Under

The Texas Rangers and the Houston Astros are tied at 1-1 coming into the rubber match of this three-game set this afternoon. The Rangers won Saturday's contest 7-6 but I expect way less action over the plate today. The Rangers will send Yovani Gallardo to the mound and he's been phenomenal of late, particularly on the road where he's posted a 1.11 ERA in his last five starts. He's been excellent during the day all season season conceding just four earned runs over 25 2/3 innings for a 1.40 ERA and he held Houston to two runs in 5 2/3 innings earlier in the season. The Astros will turn to their ace Dallas Keuchel who's not been at his very best in his last two starts, both on the road. He's been immense home at Minute Maid Park all season long though coming into this contest with a 1.24 ERA over 10 starts in front of the home-fans and he's conceded just three runs over 15 frames against Texas on the year.

Note that:
- The under is 9-2 in Texas' last 11 road games with the total set at 7.0-8.5 and 13-3-1 in its last 17 during game 3 of a series.
- The under is 5-1-1 in Houston's last seven games with the total set at 7.0-8.5 and 6-1-1 in its last eight overall.
- Only three of the last 13 meetings have gone over the total.

Sunday Scouting Edge
By Coach Fletcher

Seattle Mariners at New York Yankees

Several years back this could have been billed as a battle of the league’s top pitchers. Although Sabathia has improved over his last 7 starts, he currently doesn’t compare with the M’s King Felix. Hernandez is 11-5 with a 2.84 era this season. He’s recorded 112 strike outs in 117 innings and has a whip of 1.07. He’s gone 3-3 in his last 7 games with a 3.21 era and 95 with a 2.93 era in his first 15 starts. In away games he is 4-2 with a 3.19 era. July was very good to him as he went 1-1 with a 1.29 era. He tossed 77 shut outs in his last start against the 1st place Angels. Opening the 2nd half at Yankee Stadium will be just fine for Hernandez. He’s 5-1 with a 1.37 era in 7 career starts there. The King was crushed by the Yanks on June 1 in Seattle where they torched him for 7 runs in 4 2/3 innings where he walked 5 batters. Felix said that a muddy mound from rain turned the mound into a quagmire before the roof could close.

Baltimore Orioles at Detroit Tigers

Miguel Gonzalez (7-6, 4.24) and the Orioles have had a July to forget thus far. Gonzalez is 1-1 in July with a 5.73 era. June was even worse. Gonzalez was 1-2 with a 5.75 era. In his last start before the break Gonzalez went against the Nationals and allowed 6 runs on 9 hits, including 2 home runs in 5 innings. It was the second time in his last 3 starts that he gave up half a dozen. In his last 7 starts Miguel’s era is 4.81. He’s 4-4 with a 4.50 era on the road. Justin Verlander (0-2, 5.34) finally had a decent start in his last venture before the break. After returning from the DL in June, Verlander still hasn’t recorded a win. Against the Twins on July 10, Justin went 7 2/3 innings giving up 5 hits, 1 earned run, walked 1 and fanned 5. In his previous 2 starts after the DL he went 11 innings allowing 9 runs, 13 hits, walking 7 and striking out 8. Chris Parmelee is the only Oriole hitting over .300 against Verlander at .313. Chris Davis is .250 with no bombs. Adam Jones is hitting .192 versus Verlander and Manny Machado is hitting .182 with 0 tators as well. Matt Weiters is hitting just .063.

Los Angeles Dodgers versus Washington Nationals

All- Star started Zack Greinke goes against the National’s ace Max Scherzer in what could be quite a pitcher’s duel. Greinke comes in riding a 35 2/3 inning scoreless streak. He is 8-2 on the season with an almost imperceptible era of 1.39. In his 5 career starts versus the Nats, Greinke is 3-1 with a 2.22 era. Mad Max Scherzer is also on an impressive streak entering the contest. Scherzer hasn’t walked a batter since June 14. He’s gone 39 2/3 innings without giving up a free pass. Sherzer has faced the Dodgers 10 times and is 2-3 with a 3.51 era. Greinke has been even more impressive over his last 7 starts if that’s even possible. He’s gone 3-1 with a 0.54 era and a 0.70 whip. He’s given up just 9 hits in his last 3 games walking only 1 while fanning 18. Greinke’s era has been under 2.00 all season. Scherzer (10-7, 2.11) last started vs Baltimore and went 8 2/3 innings allowing 4 hits and 2 runs. He’s gone 4-3 in his last 7 with an era of 2.48. Max was 1-2 in July before the break with an era of 3.74.

New York Mets at St. Louis Cardinals

The Cards have had more than their share of injuries to the pitching staff but have managed to win despite that. Tim Cooney starts today in place of Jaime Garcia. This is his 4th start of the season. Cooney is 0-0 with a 4.34 era which is unheard of for a Card starter. The Red Birds are 0-3 in Cooney’s starts but he hasn’t been all that bad because he has not allowed more than 3 runs in any start. Cooney has gone 18 2/3 innings giving up 10 runs, 9 hits and 3 round trippers. He’s walked 6 and fanned 17. Cooney’s era at home is 5.40 and 3.48 on the road. His era in day games is 11.57 but that was a 2 inning disaster where he gave up 7 hits, 3 runs and a homer. Cooney was demoted after that start. This could be good news for the Mets who are definitely challenged offensively batting just .226 in their last 7 games. Cooney comes from Triple-A Memphis where he went 88 2/3 innings with an era of 2.74. Cooney was named to the PCL All-Star team and then brought back up to the bigs.

Minnesota Twins at Oakland A’s

The Minnesota Twins might just be the best team that nobody talks about. With a record of 50-40, the Twins are tailing the Royals in the AL Central. They have gone 9-4 in July and 31-17 against teams with a losing record. They have won 7 of their last 9. One reason for their success is left handed pitcher Tommy Milone. He was traded at last year’s trading deadline from the A’s to the Twins. He is thus quite familiar with the Oakland County Coliseum where he has a career 2.96 era in 35 starts. This year Milone is 5-1 with a 2.84 era. He’s a 37-24 career pitcher with a 3.85 era. Milone is 3-0 in his last 7 starts with a 1.84 era. In the last 21 innings he’s only given up 12 hits and 2 earned runs. He’s 1-0 on the road with an era of 2.17. Milone is 3-0 in day games with an era of 1.74. Milone has been up and down in his career but before being called up to the Twins, he sported a 0.70 era in 38 2/3 innings at Triple-A Rochester where he had a 47/3 K/BB ratio.
