Kings look to make it 3-0 in Game 7s

When the puck drops on Game 7 between the Los Angeles Kings and Chicago Blackhawks, the former will have the tough task of winning a third-straight Game 7 during this playoff run.

The Kings were pushed to the limit by the San Jose Sharks in Round 1 and the Anaheim Ducks in Round 2, but were able to prevail in both instances, both of which were road games. Sunday evening's Game 7 - with a ticket to the Stanley Cup on the line - will be another road test for the Kings.

Stiff back sidelines Angels' Trout


Angels center fielder Mike Trout was a late scratch from the lineup Saturday night because of upper back stiffness and might miss Sunday's series finale as well, manager Mike Scioscia said.


Trout's back flared up Saturday morning, but he was in the initial lineup at designated hitter, batting second.


"We were going to try to see if he could go out there and swing, but it's just not quite loose enough to where you want to risk any further injury," Scioscia said before the Angels lost to the A's 11-3 on Saturday. "Hopefully, it's something that quiets down and he'll be ready to go tomorrow.


"He'll get treatment on it and we'll see."


Trout is hitting .294 with 11 home runs and 38 RBIs. He has an 11-game hitting streak that has brought his average back up after it had dipped from .314 in April down to .263.




Broken hand sends Diamondbacks' Pollock to DL


Arizona center fielder A.J. Pollock suffered a fractured right hand Saturday night and will be placed on the disabled list, manager Kirk Gibson said.


Pollock was struck by a pitch from Cincinnati ace Johnny Cueto with one out in the eighth inning of the Reds' 5-0 victory.


Pollock, who is hitting .316 with six home runs and eight stolen bases, could be out awhile. Arizona second baseman Aaron Hill missed 10 weeks after undergoing surgery on his fractured left hand last season.

The Astros were one of the big surprises for the month of May, which included their longest winning streak in several seasons. This team has been awful for some time now, but things are definitely looking up with the arrival of top prospect George Springer, the emergence of Jose Altuve as a legitimate star and lots of help not that far away. Dallas Keuchel, in spite of losing on Saturday, was a top of the rotation stud for at least one month and even the much maligned Houston bullpen came up strong in the team’s recent surge.

But let’s not get carried away just yet. Once Carlos Correa, Mark Appel, Mike Foltynewicz, Vince Velasquez, Jonathan Singleton, Domingo Santana and perhaps others are wearing big league uniforms, we might well be talking about a serious contender. But as of right now, we’re just seeing a fun surge from what is still a bad baseball team. My expectation is that the excitement of May is probably going to be replaced by a return to reality in June, and that should start today.

When bad teams get hot, the general idea is to wait for the sell signal and to start fading away. That’s not always feasible based on price, but the betting line won’t be an obstacle today. The Astros became a hot follow for serious bettors in this run and for at least a few more games, since they’re staying at home, the betting lines should be reasonable if you want to take a shot at beating the Astros. I’ll be doing that today.

Wei-Yin Chen gets start for Baltimore as the Orioles look to salvage a split of thee four-game set with the Astros. Chen is kind of a marginal guy, generally good enough to give the Birds a chance to win but usually not dominating. I’m not banking on Chen completely shutting down Houston here. But after scoring only six runs over their last three games, it’s not outrageous to suggest the Astros bats have already cooled off. So Chen should have a good chance at posting a quality start.

I can see Scott Feldman having trouble today. Feldman pitched well over his head for several starts. But his last three outings have been spotty. He was hit hard by the Rangers and Angels and while he got past the Royals most recently, the data gleaned from that game wasn’t at all impressive. It says here the Orioles will have a very good chance at doing some damage to their ex-teammate this time.

The main impetus for me today is going against a weak team that just saw its winning streak come to an end. When this happens, my tendency is to jump right in while anticipating a stretch where the results return to normal. The price is more than right as in addition to the situation, I think the number is too low regardless. I’m laying it today with the Orioles.
