Washington

The Nationals are back in Miami this afternoon to wrap up their series against the Marlins and one thing's for sure - they will be darn glad that they won't see RH Jose Fernandez again - at least not until the next series. The starter who gives the Nats more fits than any other in baseball did it again last night, throwing six one-run innings while striking out nine on his way to a 3-2 victory, Fernandez's sixth career wins against no losses vs. Washington. Tonight, it will be the Nats most dominant starter, RH Max Scherzer, going to the mound for his 10th start of the season. Scherzer's numbers may be off a bit so far this season, but he is still an ace, and two starts ago, Scherzer tied a record by striking out 20 batters in a complete-game victory (his fourth of the season) over his former team, the Detroit Tigers. Scherzer has started three games here at Marlins Park, and he is 2-1 with an excellent 2.25 ERA in 20 innings in those. LH Adam Conley goes for the Fish, and the Nats are 6-0 in their last six road games vs. teams with a southpaw starter.

Chicago White Sox

The 25-18 Chicago White Sox remain atop the AL Central but the Kansas City Royals have reminded all this weekend why they are defending World Series champions. The 22-20 Royals have taken the first two of this three-game series in Chicago and can sweep a road series for the first time this season on Sunday. Chicago owns an AL-best 3.18 ERA in 2016 but it’s been the team’s offense which has let them down Friday and Saturday, scoring just a SINGLE run in each game while going 0 for 12 with runners in scoring position in the series.

The good news for Chicago batters is that they will face KC’s Yordano Ventura (4-2, 4.85 ERA), who is is 3-0 with a 3.57 ERA in four home starts (Royals are 4-0) but has a 6.30 ERA in four on the road (he’s 1-2 and the team 2-2). Ventura is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in three career outings at U.S. Cellular Field. Chicago will likely need to score runs to win here, as the White Sox send Carlos Rodon (1-4, 4.73 ERA) to the mound. The left-hander has never faced Kansas City or any of its hitters but is 0-3 with a 6.06 ERA in his last six outings, after giving up three runs in six innings of a 6-5 defeat to Houston. He didn't get the loss but the White Sox have now dropped his last four starts (team is 2-6 in his eight starts this season, as he’s been the real weak link in the starting rotation).

KC entered this series just 7-13 on the road to open 2016 and I’ll bet against the road sweep in this one.

Preview: Nationals at Marlins

Current Conditions - Miami

P/SUNNY 85 °F
Wind: SSE 12
5-Day Forecast GAME: Washington Nationals (26-17) at Miami Marlins (22-20)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, May 22 - 1:10 PM EST
WHERE: Marlins Park, Miami, Florida
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Max Scherzer has struck out 30 batters over his last two outings and attempts to send more frustrated hitters back to the dugout when the Washington Nationals visit the Miami Marlins on Sunday for the finale of their three-game series. Scherzer matched the major-league record of 20 strikeouts against Detroit on May 11 and followed that outing by fanning 10 in 6 1/3 innings against the New York Mets on Tuesday.

One person who might help increase Scherzer's strikeout total is slumping Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton, who is 0-for-17 with 15 strikeouts over his last five games. Stanton is 4-for-48 with 26 strikeouts over the last 14 contests as his batting average has dropped 64 points to .210. The teams split the first two games of the series, with Miami's 3-2 triumph on Saturday halting the Nationals' three-game winning streak. Washington's Bryce Harper is 3-for-7 in the series but has recorded only two homers and five RBIs this month after having nine blasts and 24 RBIs in April.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, MASN, WUSA 9 (Washington), FSN Florida (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Max Scherzer (4-3, 4.01 ERA) vs. Marlins LH Adam Conley (3-2, 3.40)

Scherzer has struck out 76 batters - third-most in the major leagues - but has been plagued by the long ball as he has served up 13 homers (tied for most in the majors) in just 58 1/3 innings. He has been reached for eight of those blasts in his last three outings and has given up multiple shots in four of his nine starts. Scherzer is 3-2 with a 3.64 ERA in seven career starts against Miami and has experienced issues retiring Martin Prado (11-for-22, one homer).

Conley has won three of his last four starts, beginning with the effort in which he was pulled after 7 2/3 no-hit frames against Milwaukee on April 29. He has allowed just one run in the three victories during the stretch and hasn't served up a homer in any of the four outings. Conley is 1-1 with a 7.11 ERA in three career starts against Washington and has given up homers to Wilson Ramos (2-for-6, two homers) and Jayson Werth (2-for-6, one homer).

WALK-OFFS

1. Marlins OF Ichiro Suzuki went 4-for-4 on Saturday to move 46 hits shy of 3,000.

2. Washington 2B Daniel Murphy was 2-for-4 on Saturday for his 10th multi-hit outing in May and 21st of the season.

3. Miami LF Christian Yelich (back) was scratched Saturday and is considered day-to-day.

WHERE: Comerica Park, Detroit, Michigan
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Cameron Maybin has provided quite a spark for the Detroit Tigers since returning from the disabled list and hopes to continue his hot hitting in the rubber match of a three-game series against the visiting Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday. Maybin is 11-for-17 with five runs scored after belting a homer and going 3-for-4 in Saturday’s 5-4 victory as the Tigers improved to 4-1 with the center fielder playing his first five games of the season.

Maybin (four stolen bases) missed his team's first 37 games with a left wrist injury and is making up for lost time while helping Detroit turn its season around. The Rays saw their four-game winning streak come to an end, but lost much more than Saturday’s contest as Gold Glove center fielder Kevin Kiermaier broke two metacarpal bones in his left hand diving for a ball and is out indefinitely. Tampa Bay’s franchise-record tying streak of scoring at least six runs in a game ended at six, but the Rays are still averaging 7.7 over the last seven contests. Evan Longoria will be looking to extend his hitting streak to 10 games for Tampa Bay.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Chris Archer (3-4, 4.38 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Jordan Zimmermann (6-2, 2.45)

Archer is 3-0 in his last five starts, allowing eight runs combined, after losing four straight to start the season. The 27-year-old North Carolina native has struggled with control through his win streak, walking 14 in his past four starts over 23 innings. Ian Kinsler (1-for-15) and Victor Martinez (1-for-9) have been kept under control by Archer, who is 1-1 with a 2.08 ERA in four starts against Detroit.

Zimmermann yielded eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits, including two homers, over seven innings against Minnesota on Monday and still ended a two-game losing streak. The 29-year-old Wisconsin native has slipped a bit after giving up only two earned runs combined in his first five starts but has lasted at least six innings in all eight outings. Steve Pearce is 4-for-9 with a pair of homers versus Zimmermann, who is 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA against the Rays.

WALK-OFFS

1. Detroit RF J.D. Martinez homered for the fourth time in the last six games Saturday and has seven RBIs in that span.

2. Longoria became the ninth active player with 500 extra-base hits for his current team after belting his eighth homer Saturday.

3. Kinsler boasts a nine-game hitting streak, going 15-for-36 during the run with four homers and seven RBIs.

Current Conditions - Cincinnati

5-Day Forecast GAME: Seattle Mariners (25-17) at Cincinnati Reds (15-28)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, May 22 - 1:10 PM EST
WHERE: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, Ohio
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Seattle Mariners are staring at an eight-game homestand beginning Monday, but the players may not be overly eager to return to the Pacific Northwest. With another road series victory already secured, American League West-leading Seattle will go for a three-game sweep of the reeling Cincinnati Reds on Sunday afternoon.

Franklin Gutiérrez belted a towering three-run homer measured at 473 feet in Saturday's 4-0 victory as the Mariners improved to an AL-best 17-7 away from home. Winners of three straight overall, Seattle is 7-0-1 in series on the road while boosting its all-time record against Cincinnati to 12-2. Reds first baseman Joey Votto is 3-for-31 over his last nine games after going hitless in four at-bats and leaving the bases loaded twice on Saturday. Cincinnati has been outscored 55-19 during its six-game losing streak and has one win its last 10.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners LH Wade Miley (4-2, 4.32 ERA) vs. Reds RH Alfredo Simon (1-4, 10.34)

Miley improved to 4-0 in his last five starts with a stellar outing at Baltimore on Tuesday, tossing six scoreless innings of two-hit ball in a 10-0 victory. The 29-year-old Miley has been the beneficiary of great offensive support (37 runs) during that string, but he also has registered three quality starts in that span. Miley, who spent his first four seasons with Arizona, is 2-2 with a 3.90 ERA in five career starts against Cincinnati.

If not for a spate of injuries that has sidelined six starters, Simon's rotation spot could be in jeopardy after he was shelled for 10 runs on 14 hits over 4 1/3 innings in a 13-1 beating at Cleveland. Simon did turn in a quality start in each of his previous two turns, including a season-high 7 2/3 innings of three-run ball versus Milwaukee on May 5. Robinson Cano is 5-for-12 versus Simon, who 1-7 in his last 10 starts dating to last year.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mariners CF Leonys Martin has homered in three of the past four games to match his career high with eight.

2. Reds CF Billy Hamilton is 6-for-18 during a four-game hitting streak.

3. Mariners SS Ketel Marte had to exit Saturday's game after suffering a sprained left thumb sliding into second base.

Preview: Brewers at Mets

Weather information is currently unavailable.
GAME: Milwaukee Brewers (18-25) at New York Mets (24-18)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, May 22 - 1:10 PM EST
WHERE: Citi Field, New York City, New York
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Matt Harvey may be causing some consternation among fans of the New York Mets, but the presence of Noah Syndergaard in the rotation is helping to quell those jitters. Syndergaard looks to win his third consecutive start when the Mets attempt to complete a three-game sweep of the visiting Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday afternoon.

Syndergaard is coming off a dominant performance against National League East rival Washington, striking out 10 in seven scoreless innings to win a high-profile duel against Nationals ace Max Scherzer. “He’s special,” New York catcher Kevin Plawecki told reporters of Syndergaard. “No stage is too big for him.” Yoenis Cespedes clubbed his 14th homer and David Wright delivered a walk-off single in the ninth to hand the Brewers their second straight one-run defeat after winning three of their previous four games. Ex-Met Kirk Nieuwenhuis has struggled in his return to Citi Field, going 0-for-7 with five strikeouts in the series.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), WPIX (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Chase Anderson (2-5, 5.32 ERA) vs. Mets RH Noah Syndergaard (4-2, 2.19)

Anderson won for the first time since his season debut with a gem versus the Chicago Cubs last time out, taking a no-hitter into the eighth inning in a 4-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs. It brought an end to an ugly five-start losing streak for Anderson, who was tagged for 27 runs and nine home runs during that span. Anderson also was stung by the long ball in his last start at Citi Field on July 10, giving up two homers and four runs in 4 1/3 innings.

Syndergaard bounced back from a two-start losing streak by winning his last two turns, permitting two runs or fewer for the sixth time in his overpowering victory against the Nationals. Syndergaard, who reached 100 miles per hour on the radar gun 13 times in his last outing, beat the Los Angeles Dodgers with eight innings of two-run ball in his previous turn. Syndergaard is 8-3 with a 2.53 ERA at Citi Field, holding opposing hitters to a .209 batting average against.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mets 1B Lucas Duda had an MRI exam on his ailing back and is expected to miss a few days.

2. Brewers LF Ryan Braun (back), who has missed the past four games, is hopeful of returning to the lineup on Sunday.

3. Saturday's walk-off win was the first for New York since July 31, 2015.

CLOUDS AND SUN 50 °F
Wind: E 17
5-Day Forecast GAME: Cleveland Indians (22-18) at Boston Red Sox (26-17)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, May 22 - 1:35 PM EST
WHERE: Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Boston Red Sox offense didn’t figure to stay dormant for long and broke out in a big way with a 9-1 triumph on Saturday. The Red Sox will try to keep the big hits coming and earn a series win when they host the Cleveland Indians in the rubber match of the three-game set on Sunday.

Boston averaged 10.4 runs during its last homestand but totaled just 11 runs in three games at Kansas City before returning home and suffering a 4-2 loss in Friday’s series opener. The Red Sox found their form again on Saturday with the help of leadoff hitter Mookie Betts, who belted a solo home run in the fourth inning and put the game away with a grand slam in the seventh. The Indians offense totaled 43 runs in taking four straight from the Cincinnati Reds before coming to Boston and got everything they would need on one swing from Jason Kipnis on Friday before going cold the next day. Cleveland, which visits the American League Central-leading Chicago White Sox for four games starting Monday, is trying to prove that it belongs among the elite teams in the AL and had won five in a row before falling on Saturday.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Danny Salazar (4-2, 1.80 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Rick Porcello (6-2, 3.51)

Salazar has yet to allow more than three runs in an outing and surrendered a total of two in 20 innings covering his last three turns. The 26-year-old Dominican got plenty of support and held up his end by limiting Cincinnati to one run over 7 1/3 innings in a 13-1 rout on Tuesday to earn a win. Salazar, who has 61 strikeouts in 50 total innings, is 2-0 with a 1.46 ERA in two career starts against Boston.

Porcello earned the win in each of his first five starts but picked up a loss in two of the last three. The New Jersey native had a string of six quality starts and a stretch of 15 straight lasting at least six innings come to an end when he was reached for five runs – four earned – on eight hits in five innings at Kansas City on Tuesday. Porcello is 9-4 with a 3.36 ERA in 21 career starts against Cleveland.

WALK-OFFS

1. Red Sox CF Jackie Bradley Jr. extended his career-best hitting streak to 26 games with an infield single in the sixth inning and will try to make it 27 on Sunday.

2. Cleveland 3B Juan Uribe broke up Joe Kelly’s no-hit bid with a double to right-center in the seventh inning on Saturday.

3. Boston has homered in a franchise-record 21 straight games.

L/FOG 55 °F

5-Day Forecast GAME: Colorado Rockies (21-21) at Pittsburgh Pirates (23-19)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, May 22 - 1:35 PM EST
WHERE: PNC Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Colorado Rockies capitalized on a huge mistake to snap a three-game losing streak and now will look to make it two straight wins over the host Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday in the rubber match of a three-game series. Pirates right-hander Juan Nicasio takes the mound Sunday against the team with which he played his first four seasons.

A two-out throwing error in the ninth by Pittsburgh catcher Francisco Cervelli opened the door for a four-run rally for Colorado in Saturday's 5-1 victory. Cristhian Adames followed Tony Wolters' tiebreaking infield hit with the first homer of his career, a two-run shot that sent the Pirates to their second loss in seven games. Pittsburgh's John Jaso has three straight multiple-hit games and is 10-for-19 over his last five contests. Nicasio has a tough act to follow as the Pirates have received seven innings from their starter in four straight games.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, ROOT (Colorado), ROOT (Pittsburgh)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH Chad Bettis (4-2, 4.18 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Juan Nicasio (4-3, 4.46)

Bettis is coming off his best start in more than a month, when he held St. Louis to one run and five hits over 6 2/3 innings. The 27-year-old had labored during his previous four turns, going 1-2 while giving up a total of 16 runs and 32 hits over 25 innings. Bettis was charged with four runs on six hits over 6 2/3 frames against the Pirates on April 25 in Colorado to drop to 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA in five appearances (three starts) against them.

Nicasio had a solid first month with the Pirates, capped by seven scoreless innings of three-hit ball on April 29, but he has regressed since that point. The 29-year-old Dominican managed to come away with a victory in his last start versus Atlanta despite surrendering five runs (three earned) on eight hits over five innings. He is 4-1 with a 3.49 ERA in five turns at home and has allowed two runs over 6 2/3 innings against Colorado in his career.

WALK-OFFS

1. Pirates SS Jordy Mercer is riding a seven-game hitting streak.

2. Rockies LHP Jorge De La Rosa is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque and start Tuesday in Boston.

3. Pirates 3B Jung Ho Kang is listed as day-to-day after leaving Saturday's game with discomfort in his left hand.

Preview: Braves at Phillies

Weather information is currently unavailable. 5-Day Forecast
GAME: Atlanta Braves (12-30) at Philadelphia Phillies (24-19)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, May 22 - 1:35 PM EST
WHERE: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Atlanta Braves have clinched their second series win of the season and will try to lock up their second sweep when they visit the Philadelphia Phillies in the finale of a three-game series on Sunday. The National League-worst Braves took the series opener 7-1 on Friday and kept up the strong pitching in a 2-0 triumph on Saturday afternoon.

Atlanta earned a three-game sweep at Miami from April 15-17 for its lone series win of the campaign and had dropped five of the first seven on the 10-game road trip before getting to Philadelphia. Freddie Freeman slammed a pair of home runs on Friday to back Matt Wisler's strong start and Williams Perez allowed two hits in 6 1/3 innings on Saturday before handing it off to the bullpen. The scoring drought is nothing new for the Phillies, who have not scored more than four runs in any of their last eight games. Philadelphia slugger Ryan Howard went 0-for-2 on Saturday before being lifted for a pinch hitter and is 0-for-12 with five strikeouts in his last four games.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, FSN Southeast (Atlanta), CSN Philadelphia

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Casey Kelly (0-0, 3.00 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Jerad Eickhoff (1-6, 4.44)

Kelly is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett to make his second major-league start of the season. The 26-year-old former top prospect is one of several promising young arms in the Atlanta system trying to establish himself and has battled back after arm surgery limited him to three major-league appearances following his 2012 debut with the San Diego Padres. Kelly worked three innings of relief against the New York Mets on April 22 in his first appearance for the Braves and yielded one run.

Eickhoff is hoping to end a string of five consecutive losing decisions but needs more support after receiving a total of four runs from his offense in his last three outings. The 25-year-old held the Miami Marlins to three runs on six hits and a pair of walks in six innings on Monday but suffered the loss in a game the Phillies went on to lose 5-3. Eickhoff was not quite as sharp at Atlanta on May 11, when he surrendered four runs – three earned – in 4 1/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Braves INF Chase d’Arnaud is 5-for-8 with a pair of doubles in his last two games.

2. Phillies OF Tyler Goeddel is 12-for-28 over his last eight games, lifting his average from .159 to .264.

3. Freeman has eight of Atlanta’s league-low 18 home runs.

Preview: Royals at White Sox

Current Conditions - Chicago

CLOUDY 51 °F
Wind: NE 12
5-Day Forecast GAME: Kansas City Royals (22-20) at Chicago White Sox (25-18)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, May 22 - 2:10 PM EST
WHERE: U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago, Illinois
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Kansas City Royals hope for another strong pitching performance when they go for a sweep of their three-game set against the host Chicago White Sox on Sunday. Dillon Gee combined with four relievers on a six-hitter in a series-opening 4-1 triumph on Friday while five pitchers teamed up to yield seven hits the following day as Kansas City captured a 2-1 decision.

The Royals look for Yordano Ventura to continue his winning ways in the finale and Lorenzo Cain to keep driving in runs as he has collected 12 RBIs over his last 10 games and one in each of the last four contests. Chicago will attempt to avoid its ninth loss in 11 games overall and fifth in the first six contests of its 10-game homestand. The White Sox have scored three runs or fewer in each of their last four games and went 13 innings without crossing the plate before Dioner Navarro scampered home on a double play in the seventh on Saturday. Tyler Saladino has hit safely in seven of his last eight contests, recording four two-hit performances in that span.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN Kansas City, WGN (Chicago)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals RH Yordano Ventura (4-2, 4.85 ERA) vs. White Sox LH Carlos Rodon (1-4, 4.73)

Ventura aims for his third straight victory but was not overly impressive in the first two, surrendering seven runs and 13 hits over 11 2/3 innings in triumphs over the New York Yankees and Boston. The 24-year-old Dominican has yielded four or more runs in three of his last four outings after giving up fewer than three in each of his first four turns this season. Ventura is 2-2 with a 4.24 ERA in six career starts against the White Sox but has allowed 10 runs over 15 frames while going 0-1 in three outings at Chicago.

Rodon is 0-3 in his last six starts after settling for a no-decision against Houston on Tuesday, when he gave up three runs - two earned - in six innings. The 23-year-old Floridian's lone victory this year came on April 13 at Minnesota, where he scattered three hits over six scoreless frames. Rodon, who never has faced Kansas City, has served up two home runs in each of his last two outings and is 0-2 with a 5.68 ERA in four starts at home.

WALK-OFFS

1. Chicago RF Adam Eaton has reached base in 15 consecutive contests.

2. The Royals are 23-7 in their last 30 games at U.S. Cellular Field and 60-35 overall against the White Sox since 2011.

3. Chicago SS Jimmy Rollins is expected to start Sunday after Saladino got the start in the first two games of the series.

PREDICTION: White Sox 4, Royals 3
