Preview: Tigers (86-74) at Braves (67-93)

Game: 3
Venue: Turner Field
Date: October 02, 2016 3:10 PM EDT

ATLANTA -- The overpowering version of Justin Verlander pitched a lot of big games for Detroit. The revamped version of the former American League MVP and Cy Young winner starts the biggest game of 2016 for the Tigers on Sunday.

Verlander, who is reborn at age 33, faces the Atlanta Braves in the final game at Turner Field with the Tigers' flickering wild-card hopes on the line.

The Tigers (86-74) trail Baltimore and Toronto by 1 1/2 games and can't lose either to the Braves or in a makeup game at home against Cleveland on Monday. They also need Baltimore or Toronto to lose Sunday.

Detroit has just the pitcher on the mound it would want in such a difficult situation. After a down season and then an injury-plagued one, Verlander is making another Cy Young bid.

"You can make the argument that he might even be better in some ways," Detroit manager Brad Ausmus said in comparing to the two versions. "He's certainly had a renaissance. He's doing some things better than even when he was in his Cy Young prime. He's made some adjustments that have born fruit. He's been one of the best in the league, quite frankly."

Although Verlander no longer throws quite as hard, the right-hander leads the AL in strikeouts (246) and WHIP (1.00) while going 16-8 with a 3.10 ERA. He has held opponents to a .176 average in the second half and had a 1.93 ERA in five September starts with 48 strikeouts in 32 1/3 innings.

Verlander is 33-16 in regular-season games in September and October during his career and Atlanta starter Julio Teheran knows he will have to be on the top of his game if the Braves are to play spoilers and bid farewell to their ballpark of 20 years with a victory.

"He's one of the best and I'm sure he'll be lights out for a game like this," Teheran said. "I'll have to be good to give us a chance. It'll be exciting."

Verlander is 8-2 with a 2.00 ERA since the All-Star break, and had a pair of 11-strikeout games in September as well as one with 12 in his most recent start.

Verlander's not just blowing fastballs by hitters now, though.

"He's a different pitcher than a few years ago," Ausmus said. "I think everyone in the organization thought he'd be able to pitch even when his velocity declined because he's got four pitches and command. But he's also made some adjustments with the slider and his arm slot and preparation. Plus, he's healthy."

How impressive has Verlander been?

His strikeout rate of 28.1 percent is the best for someone 33 or more since Hall of Famer Randy Johnson fanned 30.1 percent in 2004, and his WHIP is the best in the American League since Gaylord Perry, also in the Hall of Fame, finished at 0.98 in 1972.

Teheran has never faced the Tigers, but Verlander has pitched against the Braves twice -- both times at Turner Field. He is 2-0 with a 3.21 ERA, the last start coming in 2010.

Teheran, the Braves representative in the All-Star Game, tries to close the season with a rare home victory. He is 1-6 with a 3.84 ERA at home this year compared to 5-4 with a 2.69 ERA on the road.

Teheran tied his season high of six runs allowed Tuesday against Philadelphia, giving up 10 hits in four innings. He has a 4.86 ERA since coming off the disabled list on Aug. 19 after a lat strain.

After splitting the first two games of the series, the Braves (67-93) have won 11 of their past 13 games and are 36-35 since the All-Star break.

Preview: Pirates (78-82) at Cardinals (85-76)

Game: 3
Venue: Busch Stadium
Date: October 02, 2016 3:15 PM EDT

ST. LOUIS -- Adam Wainwright will start, but everyone is available.

Even Trevor Rosenthal, the former closer who worked three innings of valuable long relief on Saturday as the St. Louis Cardinals rallied for a win over the Pittsburgh Pirates that assured Game 162 of being meaningful.

How meaningful it is, though, depends on the help St. Louis (85-76) gets from the Los Angeles Dodgers. So far this weekend, the Dodgers have been about as helpful to the Cardinals as a pitching staff full of sore shoulders and Tommy John surgeries, which is to say not at all.

San Francisco's 9-3 and 3-0 victories over Los Angeles have canceled out St. Louis' 7-0 and 4-3 decisions over the Pirates, leaving the teams in the same position they have been in since Tuesday.

The Giants are a game up with a game left. Catching the New York Mets isn't happening, since the Mets clinched home field advantage for Wednesday night's National League wild card game by winning in Philadelphia on Saturday.

If the Cardinals win and San Francisco loses Sunday, there will be a Game 163 Monday night at Busch Stadium. Any other combination of results and St. Louis will head for the first tee on Monday, its season not including a playoff game for the first time in six years.

So manager Mike Matheny has no choice but to manage this game as though it's a Game 7. He certainly assigned that kind of importance to Saturday, hooking starter Michael Wacha after one inning and using six relievers to cover the last 24 outs.

"We had to have extraordinary effort from our bullpen today, and we got it," Matheny said. "That was just impressive. Guys like to know their roles, but they were ready. There were more moving parts to this one than normal."

The Cardinals hope Matheny doesn't have to make as many walks to the mound or as many calls to the bullpen. For that to become reality, Wainwright (13-9, 4.67) will have to summon up one of his best games of the year.

Wainwright has won his last two starts, but has allowed nine runs in 11 innings against Colorado and Cincinnati, profiting from an offense that has plated 22 runs. He's 2-1 against Pittsburgh this season, winning 5-1 at home on July 7 and 12-6 in PNC Park on Sept. 5.

The Pirates (78-82) will counter with Ryan Vogelsong (3-7, 5.00) in their season finale. Vogelsong was a 6-4 loser to the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night, and is only 3-7 with a 6.02 earned run average in 23 career outings against St. Louis.

While injuries have stripped Pittsburgh of some key parts to its lineup for this series, it can still run Jung Ho Kang out there, which is bad news for the Cardinals.

Kang's three-run homer off Wacha in the first inning Saturday was his 21st of the season. Six have been at the expense of St. Louis pitching, the most anyone has hit against the Cardinals this season.

"Kang has swung the bat very aggressively with power against that staff," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said.

Preview: Indians (93-67) at Royals (81-80)

Game: 3
Venue: Ewing M. Kauffman Stadium
Date: October 02, 2016 3:15 PM EDT

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Cleveland Indians could end their regular season Sunday against the Kansas City Royals after 161 games.

Or they could play a makeup game Monday in Detroit if it has playoff ramifications for either or both clubs.

But this the Indians do know for sure: They will be playing Thursday in the American League Division Series against the Boston Red Sox.

Indians manager Terry Francona said "it's not that tough" balancing the finish of the regular season and knowing the playoffs are ahead.

"It's kinda nice in the fact that even though they're playing, it could mean home field, but it's not life or death if we lose," Francona said. "So it gives the guys a little bit of a mental break, which I think is good. You don't want to take too much (off) because it's hard to turn that button on, but I think our guys have handled it pretty good."

While Francona managed the Red Sox to two World Series championships, he does not want the series against Boston be about him versus his former club, but keep the focus on the players.

"The one thing I think I need to be cognizant of is the players have worked so hard to, both sides, to get to this," Francona said. "I can't let my personal feelings ever get in the way of or take away from what they've done. So, whatever my feelings are need to remain my feelings and let the players, like I said, they've worked so hard for this. It needs to be about them."

Francona named Trevor Bauer his starting pitcher for the series opener Thursday while staff ace Corey Kluber, who has not pitched since Sept. 26 at Detroit and leaving after four innings with quadriceps tightness, starts the second game Friday.

Kluber will throw a bullpen session Sunday and an extended mound session Tuesday. Francona said he did not think it would fair to the team or Kluber to ask him to pitch Thursday and possibly on short rest for the fifth game of the ALDS if necessary.

"In fact I know it's the right thing for everybody," Francona said. "I don't think it's fair for Kluber to have him sit for 10 days and have him pitch two games in four days. He certainly wanted to. I kind of -- again not just me, but talking to everybody -- I just took it out of his hands, Now he can prepare for Game 2. He can do that without the anxiety and worry of rushing."

Francona jokingly had one message for Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz, who has announced this is his final year.

"I wish Ortiz would consider retiring early, but I don't see that happening," Francona said.

With Carlos Carrasco on the 60-day disabled list (broken finger) and Danny Santana out since Sept. 9 with a forearm strain, the Indians' rotation is shallow entering the postseason. With the injuries, Bauer emerged as the starter for the opener after beginning the year in the bullpen.

"He's had some ups and down, like everybody pretty much," Francona said. "I think he relishes what's ahead of him. Obviously, he's going up against a good lineup, but I think he'll be OK."

The Royals, who start right-hander Ian Kennedy on Sunday in their season finale, try to snap a three-game slide. They need a victory to finish with a winning record for the fourth straight year.

"We've talked about it," said utility player Whit Merrifield, who made a costly fielding error leading to three unearned runs in the eighth inning of the Indians' 6-3 victory Saturday. "We've talked about needing a win this series. We have one more chance at it. We'll come here tomorrow and be ready to go."

The Royals, however, have lost 13 of 18 to the Indians this year and have been outscored by 32 runs.

Right-hander Josh Tomlin, who has not pitched in six days, will be the Indians starter. This will be his 17th career start and 22nd career appearance against the Royals. He is 7-4 with a 4.24 ERA in his 16 starts.

And if the Indians play Monday, Francona said he has "no idea" who would start.

"Some of it may depend on what the game's for," Francona said. "We'll see. Some of it will depend on who pitches tomorrow (Sunday) and how much."
