Yes, I was; that was a great summer. The Crew needed only one win to clinch it. That whole weekend, I kept putting off things in order to watch the Brewers clinch, however, I got nothing done that weekend, because they did clinch on the last day.
Indeed it was a great summer...the Orioles were known for their second half runs back then, always catching fire in August and September....
I remember that season well, and that last game well too....Palmer vs Sutton, a cool crisp sunny autumn day, about 60 degrees....it was a perfect day to win the EAST!
The Brewers jumped out early, Yount homered to rightfield , first batter off of Jim Palmer, who was trying to win his 4th Cy Young had he won that game he probably would have got it, Vukovich ended up winning it.
The Brewers held the lead all day, Baltimore had rallied all weekend but this game , it was not meant to be!
They had one last shot, the game was still in reach, I think it was Al Bumbry who sliced one into the corner in left with men on base, and Ben Oglivie goes down into the corner (you couldn't even see him from where I was at) and slides up against the leftfield foul lines (there was very little foul territory down the lines at Memorial Stadium) and makes a shoestring catch to save extra bases and the game would have been tied.
I will never forget that play or that game, I still have it on tape! :nopityA:
The Orioles had went 27-5 down the stretch to get real close to Milwaukwee in the final weeks, they then went 3-5 going into the final weekend, almost were eliminated before that weekend even started.
