The free-market is almost always often the most efficient. And the free-market is strongest when everyone is given the opportunity to contribute. It is the economic version of checks and balances. Everywhere I've ever lived as a tax paying adult (34 years now) the citizens socially combine their assets for the collective good, paying for everything from roads to utility right of ways to subsidizing businesses, feeding the hungry, housing the impoverished, providing medical assistance to those in need. Any of us could add a long list to the one I just wrote wherein American citizens pool their resources under various forms of government oversight for the benefit of the collective good.
And it's a key reason why I consider America to be a great place to live and to operate businesses.
