Social media networks are scrambling to get rid of a viral conspiracy video spreading false claims about the coronavirus, according to a report.

The roughly 26-minute “Plandemic Movie” has been viewed and shared widely on YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Vimeo and clips of it also circulated on Twitter this week, CNBC reported.

The clip, apparently an excerpt of a larger documentary to be released this summer, makes a number of bogus, unproven or misleading claims, like that the coronavirus pandemic was created to make profits off vaccines.

And in defiance of the advice of medical experts, it suggests that masks can make people sicker and that sheltering in place harms the immune system.

One video, shared on Facebook by someone claiming to be one of the filmmakers, had been viewed more than 1.7 million times and shared more than 140,000 times as of Thursday.

Facebook told CNBC that the video violated its policy and would be removed.

“Suggesting that wearing a mask can make you sick could lead to imminent harm, so we’re removing the video,” a Facebook spokeswoman said.

One clip circulating on YouTube videos received more than 1 million views before it was removed, according to the MIT Technology Review.

The company said the video, one of three on the site, was scrapped for making claims about a cure for the virus not backed by health organizations.

The other two were borderline, meaning that YouTube decided they didn’t violate rules, but that they would no longer be recommended or show up prominently in search results, the MIT Technology Review said.

Vimeo also said the video was removed for violating standards regarding “content that spreads harmful and misleading health information.”

Meanwhile, Twitter said it had banned the hashtags #PlagueofCorruption and #PlandemicMovie from trends and searches.

But at what cost to society?

Switching back to posting videos containing erroneous health information during a global pandemic, it is just outright dangerous to other humans to allow disinformation to spread. Back in 1918 a snake oil salesman could only do so much damage, but in today's world social media gives these quacks a platform to reach millions and do real harm. Thank god Zuckerberg finally is realizing his duty to the billions of people who use Facebook and taking a more pro-active approach to fake postings.

Don't you realize it is Putin's goal to undermine our country through destroying our political system through the spread of disinformation? And, by the way, it's working.

Yep. Information is to be discussed and sussed out. For most things we know the truth/reality. But many so called conspiracy theories have been true. You have the right to look at all information and assess the situation yourself right or wrong. It is not about the government tells you such and such and that is how it is. I'm sure the world would be destroyed if a few idiots put 2+2 =5 on the internet lol. I'm sure the much more prevalent 2+2=4 would win out, dont ya think? More likely the possible truth getting hidden is a bigger problem

The most dangerous enemy of the United States has been China for years but too many people are still fascinated with Russia.

That would make you a publisher and open to being sued and liable for such content. This is why when copyright material or videos of violence are put on there they are not liable. They also receive public funding When you pick and choose it means you are signing off on whatever you leave on your site and thus liable for it. Very few limits other than immediate harm such as telling everyone "We must riot now" and it leading to a riot. Or a threat like "I will kill you" That is assault. Other than that.....

This is a great point. When it comes to deciding how businesses like Google and Facebook operate, it should not be determined by the free market, it should be decided by the government and the courts.
