Serious Speed Pre-Entered in Turf Sprint.
Get ready for the richest five furlongs in horse racing! The Turf Sprint is always a mad dash for cash, and it will be no different this year as 12 horses have been pre-entered for the $1,000,000 race. As usual, the race has drawn a good mix of American horses and international stars. The Turf Sprint will go off as race five on Saturday, November 4th.
The Turf Sprint field could be one of the deepest runnings of the race in recent memory. Leading the pre-entries is likely favorite Lady Aurelia who has been an international super star and American heroine this year. After prepping at Keeneland in the $100,000 Giant's Causeway, Lady Aurelia headed overseas to Royal Ascot. She was victorious there last year in the Group 2 Queen Mary, and came home a winner again this year in the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes by three lengths. She then traveled to York and finished second in the Group 1 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes by a nose. Since then she has been training steadily at Keeneland leading her to this challenge.
The horse that defeated Lady Aurelia in the Coolmore Nunthorpe, Marsha (IRE), has been pre-entered for this race as well. Lady Aurelia will have revenge on her mind, but will have to earn it as Marsha is certainly no slouch. She is a Group 1 and Group 3 winner this year, and has hit the board in all five of her starts. She is coming off a second place finish at Chantilly in the Group 1 Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp Longines Stakes.
Let us not forgot about the American contingent though, starting with six-furlong world record holder Disco Partner. He has been nothing short of brilliant this year as he is a perfect 3-for-3 when sprinting on the turf. His world record performance in the Grade 3 Jaipur Stakes became a key race throughout the season as several horses came back to win or at least run very well. After an experiment at running a mile, Disco Partner returned to sprinting last time out and won the Belmont Turf Sprint Invitational by one and one quarter lengths.
One of the cooler stories of the race is the Mike Maker trained Hogy. Three races ago this horse was claimed for $80K at Saratoga after finishing second in an option claimer. Right after the claim, Hogy returned to win the $350,000 Grade 3 Kentucky Downs Turf Sprint, and then was a strong second in the Grade 2 Woodford Stakes at Keeneland. Now the 8-year-old is on his way to the Breeders’ Cup. This has undoubtedly been a tremendous claim for owner Michael M. Hui.
Another cool story is Bucchero who won the Grade 2 Woodford Stakes over Hogy at odds of 26-1. He has had an up and down career, but lately has really found his stride with back to back wins leading up to this race. The horse has made a living running at smaller tracks, but will step up to the biggest spotlight yet for connections who are thrilled to give him the chance.
The event will go off as race five on Saturday’s card and has a post time of 3:37 ET. Others pre-entered for the race include: Cotai Glory (GB), Holding Gold, Mongolian Saturday, Pure Sensation, Richard’s Boy, Stormy Liberal, and Washington DC (IRE).
