So what will the Chargers do with Phillip Rivers?

My bad - Brees is going to be an unrestricted free agent after the season ends. The Chargers (alas) will get nothing for him. As far as this year goes Brees and LT are making the draft where the Chargers picked up Tomlinson (instead of Mike Vick) and Brees (2nd round) into a pretty good one. Rivers signed for $40 million and has to play.

They haven't exactly been tearing up a tough schedule. They are far better than anyone expected, but you have to do more than beat up teams like the Raiders and Saints at home to get excited. The wins over the Jags and Titans don't look so impressive anymore either. The Broncos and Jets beat them, so they have a look of a team that is a year away. Bad teams become good teams first. Good teams take care of business when its a lesser team but can't beat the best. Maybe next year the Chargers can do that, but with that coach and that sorry organization I wouldn't take anything for granted in terms of progressing into something big.

They can't do anything with Rivers.

The guy is a free agent after the season and has little trade value since most teams in need of a QB are out of the playoff hunt for this season and can go after Rivers in the offseason.

If I were SD, I would TRY to trade him for whatever I could get (assuming they do not plan to sign him after the season). Hand the wheel over to Rivers and hope that he can maintain 3/4 of what they have now. If that doesn't work, ride him into the playoffs and count themselves lucky.

I agree to some degree San Diego hasn't played many good teams, but they are throttling the teams they should...the West is all the sudden very mediocre , KC can't get anything going, Denver nothing special, the Chargers were not expected to do anything...what gives?
