[h=1]Snow, Sleet, Freezing Rain Target Texas, Louisiana Thursday and Friday[/h]Now that we're done with
Winter Storm Janus on the East Coast, we turn our attention to a region that doesn't see snow and ice very often – the western Gulf Coast. Winter storm watches and winter weather advisories have been issued for over 10 million Texans in anticipation of this wintry disturbance.
As a
shot of cold Arctic air dives deep into the heart of Texas Thursday, a disturbance in the upper atmosphere will drop south through the Rockies at the same time. This combination will likely wring out some precipitation across parts of central, south, and southeast Texas and parts of southern Louisiana.

Given that the Arctic air should drive temperatures into the 20s across central and parts of south Texas by Thursday night, this precipitation could turn wintry.
One exception, though, would be the Texas Panhandle, where light snow will fall and precipitation may start as light rain on Thursday along the I-10 corridor from southwest Louisiana to West Texas.
Thursday evening, however, that should change to a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain from west to east across this I-10 corridor into at least southwest Louisiana, including areas from Austin and
San Antonio to
Houston.
As the temperatures fall, at least some ice is expected to build up on bridges, overpasses, and elevated freeways (for example, the double-deck section of I-35 in Austin) as moisture from the earlier rainfall freezes up on any untreated pavement. This will lead to a potentially hazardous commute Friday morning in these areas.
Given the recent warm weather, including highs in the upper 70s and 80s on Monday, ice accumulation on surfaces in contact with the ground will be more difficult. A few locations may pick up ice accumulations of one-tenth of an inch in trees, powerlines, and on vehicle tops. Widespread power outages are not anticipated, though some sagging tree limbs are possible, in a few spots.

As far as snowfall accumulations, parts of west-central Texas may pick up over an inch of snow. A dusting of snow cannot be ruled out in a few, spotty areas east of I-35, as well.
Light accumulations of sleet may occur as well in the Austin, San Antonio, and Houston metro areas, again mainly on colder surfaces such as overpasses and car tops.

The light wintry mix is expected to shut off sometime Friday morning for most areas.
Friday afternoon temperatures should recover just enough to get most of the affected area above freezing, and by the weekend much warmer air will return to the region. That should preclude any long-lasting impacts from this quick shot of wintry weather.
