SMU +3 over Rice week 1

LY's game was 43-42 SMU. Hard to see alot changing in this year's matchup. Neither will stop anyone all year. Both should be able to score at will on the other. SPT are good for both teams. I thought this was one of the easiest no plays on the first week board. I'd set the total in the high 70's. Fun to watch maybe - but not fun to wager on... With all the passing this one could take about 5 hours even with the new rules.

definitely Rice or nothing for me. Teams just dont pick up an offense like the one June Jones wants to institute in a couple of months ESPECIALLY with a freshman QB. And if they are still struggling to find the ONE starting QB and keep giving all the QBs reps, all the better for my Rice bet. Rice will only be better this year. They return more players, the same coaching staff and a system that is working well for them.

SMU will steadily improve as they adjust to the JJ system, but it will take some time.

LOL, so SMU will replace a veteran QB who broke several SMU records with a snotty-nosed freshman QB for a start in their road opener? Interesting. I understand Jones wanting to start new and get a QB ready for his system, but there is no doubt that he stands ready to take his lumps this year in order to give a young QB experience for the coming years. This freshman will make mistakes and cost them some games that Willis might have won for them.

This news just put Rice back on my plate (pardon the pun) . . . .

In the big picture I think it's probably a good move for SMU, SoonerBS. Justin Willis really wasn't a very good quarterback and reports say he's way over his head in Jones' run-and-shoot. When the pressure is on his first reaction has always been to tuck the ball and run. That kind of decision-making doesn't fly in an offense that relies on the passes spread all over the place.

The first two or three games of the season could be shaky for the Ponies, though.

Don't get me wrong, I understand the "big picture." But, for the sake of this opener on the road, I don't see how anyone could play on SMU now . . . .

Yeah, it'd be tough to put any money on them. I'm not sure I can bring myself to bet on Rice either, just because they're RICE. I think this might be a fun game to watch, but I'll probably pass on wagering. Perhaps I'll consider a Rice TT play if it looks decent.

wait, Rice went to a bowl in 2006 and played surprisingly well that year. they sucked last year due to a loss of players and another new offensive system implemented and a new head coach.. this year they return 16 starters, 9 on offense (a big key with that offense) and keep the same coaching staff. things are looking up for them IMO

The Owls have definitely been getting better, even with last year's regression, but it's hard to erase the memory of so many, many terrible years. I bet on them from time to time, but that doesn't mean I ever feel real good about the wager when I do.

fair enough. you could replace Rice with Temple, Baylor or Duke I suppose.....
even if they are better, you still have to hold your breath when you bet them :smoker2:

They don't have much time, June claims he's only coaching for about 5 years and has a house on the Big Island, thanks to the SMU Boosters.

I don't know if Bo ran the same O in High School, but even Timmy (St. Louis ran a more balance R/S) and had problems when he went to UH. I would play against SMU or wait till the second game. gl

while I'm definitely surprised that Willis isn't starting, he wasn't the sole reason I'm on the SMU side...SMU has the edge in the running back dept., special teams (big time which is 1/3 of the game), the defensive line and also huge advantage with coaching (Jones is in fact the best playcaller in the game-regardless of who is quarterbacking)...I respect Chase and Clemment, but they factor into 1/3 of the game...in 1999 he took a team that was 0-12 the year before and had instant success...that's how much this guy means to teams...

Interesting news about Willis. Still struggle to lay points with Rice though. Absolutely love Texas Tech to demolish SMU in week 3 now though.

just a note, special teams is not 1/3 of the game.

teams can run some 50-80 plays a game and only about 5 to 10 are special teams related (kickoff, punt, fg).

Be careful, alot of coaches are going to "put it on" June Jones, as payback for all the times he ran it up on hapless opponents.
