Does it pay to play "mind games" when it comes to Northwestern student-athletes? Those guys are all in Mensa. NU insiders say in terms of Big Ten foes, Pitt's offense most closely resembles Wisconsin's with its emphasis on pre-snap shifts (playing "mind games" with the defense) and jet sweeps. Northwestern has the better defense, and the offense should be able to put up enough points to keep pace. It may come down to whoever has the ball last and the outcome sort of feels like a coin flip but the Wildcats are the team getting the points. The key for Northwestern will be to stop James Conner and the Pitt rushing attack. We’ve heard a lot about the Pitts offense this season, but let’s not forget about Pitt’s deplorable defense and focus on that. They allowed at least 30 points eight times this season, including a ridiculous 61 points to Syracuse in its last game. Northwestern slows down Pitt’s vaunted offense just enough, and the Wildcats pull some trick plays out to get the outright win. Pitt is ranked No. 127 in the country against the pass, giving up 343.1 yards per contest. Northwestern quarterback Clayton Thorson shouldn’t find too much trouble moving the football. Again, Northwestern’s best unit is a stingy defense that allowed 22.1 points per contest. Safety Godwin Igwebuike was the leading Wildcats playmaker with 101 tackles, six pass defenses and an interception. Look for NW defense to be better prepared than Pitts offense after this four week time off period.
