*** RUTGERS @ S FLORIDA (-10.5; O/U 42) ***
------------------------------------------------------
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights head to Tampa for this Wednesday's Big East clash with the South Florida Bulls at Raymond James Stadium. The Knights are coming off their worst defeat of the campaign, a 41-21 beating at Pittsburgh on October 23rd. The setback ended a short two-game win streak for Rutgers, which had lost its other two games by a total of just seven points. The Bulls meanwhile, put together a solid effort in their last outing, which resulted in a 38-30 victory at Cincinnati on October 22nd. USF had lost its first two Big East games, so that was obviously an important outcome for the team.

True freshman QB Chas Dodd had his worst performance since moving into a starting role, completing 8-of-19 pass attempts for just 61 yards and an INT in a lopsided loss to Pitt. Furthermore, he was sacked six times and eventually replaced by Tom Savage, who threw for 46 yards and a TD. Dodd has still enjoyed more success than Savage, who began the season as the starter, throwing for 817 yards with five TDS against three INTs. The Knights don't have many weapons to work with on offense, but Mohamed Sanu is plenty potent. A versatile threat, Sanu leads the team in rushing (286 yards) and receiving (341 yards), while also totaling seven TDs. He however, wasn't much of a factor last game, catching just four passes for 46 yards in the loss to Pitt.

Rutgers has a solid defense, but the unit was exploited in a big way by Pitt, which rolled up 513 total yards. The Knights were shredded for 206 yards on the ground, while allowing 307 yards on 22-of-28 pass attempts. It was clearly a dismal performance by Rutgers, which is keeping opponents to an average of just 324 total ypg, including only 188.9 passing ypg. Joe Lefeged had 10 stops and the team's lone sack against Pitt, and he now ranks second to Antonio Lowery (69 stops) in tackles with 51 for the season.

After totaling just 15 points in their first two Big East games, the Bulls erupted for 38 in a triumph of Cincinnati last outing. QB B.J. Daniels finally turned in a performance that was noteworthy, as he completed 13-of-16 pass attempts for 286 yards and two TDs. He also paced the team with 35 yards and another two scores on the ground. It was a much needed performance from Daniels, who had thrown just four TDs in the team's first six games. Dontavia Bogan had 85 receiving yards and three catches in the win over Cincinnati and he has been the team's top target with 27 receptions and 414 yards for the season.

USF's defense was beat up by Cincinnati, but the group has been pretty solid otherwise, holding five of its seven opponents to 20 points or fewer. Still, the team's last performance has to be a bit concerning considering the Bulls gave up a whopping 590 total yards to Cincinnati. The pass defense was seriously exploited for 512 yards and USF is now permitting an average of 215.1 ypg through the air for the season. On a positive note, USF did log four sacks in the win, bringing its season total to 21 in that department. Sabbath Joseph had two of the team's sacks in the win over Cincinnati, while Craig Marshall had 1.5 TFLs. Marshall currently leads the team with four sacks and seven TFLs, and Joseph ranks second with three sacks.

• PREGAME NOTES
-----------------------
Rutgers beat South Florida last four years, crushing Bulls 31-0/49-16 the last two years; Scarlet Knights, who recruit heavily in Florida, won both previous meetings here, 49-16 (-19.5)/22-20 (-4). Bulls were ranked 23rd in country LY when they lost 31-0 at Rutgers. Knights are 3-3 this year vs I-A opponents, with five of the six games decided by 5 or less points. Underdogs are 4-2 vs spread in those games. Rutgers lost 41-21 at Pitt, won 19-14 at FIU, in its two road games. USF is also 3-3 vs I-A foes, scoring 14 or less points in all three losses, 24-31-38 in wins. Four of last five South Florida games stayed under the total.

STATSYSTEMS REPORT 11/3 cont.

*** CHARLOTTE BOBCATS @ NEW JERSEY NETS (-2; O/U 185.5) ***
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Despite a successful start, the New Jersey Nets know there is plenty of room for improvement - maybe not as much improvement as the Charlotte Bobcats need. The Nets look to move on from their first loss when they host the winless Bobcats on Wednesday night. After losing 18 straight games to open a dismal 12-win season in 2009-10, New Jersey won its first two contests this autumn before falling 101-78 at home to Miami on Sunday.

Though only one defeat, Sunday’s effort proved how far the Nets still need to go to seriously compete with an elite team like the Heat and their superstar trio of Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh. New Jersey shot 35.3 percent and struggled to score after averaging 103.5 points and shooting 50.4 percent in home victories over Detroit and Sacramento. “We still have some work to be done,” said Nets point guard Devin Harris, who had 13 points and six assists.

New owner Mikhail Prokhorov, however, liked what he saw from the Nets during the first week of the season. “I am very pleased with the team’s progress and look forward to watching the Nets reach their full potential as the season continues,” he said in a statement released by the team. Brook Lopez had 20 points while No. 3 overall pick Derrick Favors added 13 and 13 rebounds Sunday for the Nets, who remain confident despite their disappointing effort.

The Bobcats are taking the same approach despite being mired in the worst start of the franchise’s seven seasons. Coming off its first-ever playoff appearance, Charlotte has averaged 91.7 points through three games. D.J. Augustin had 26 points and Jackson added 23 in Charlotte’s 98-88 loss at Milwaukee on Saturday. The Bobcats committed 18 turnovers, giving them 56 in three games - an average of nearly 19. “We just got to stay positive. It’s a long season,” said Augustin, averaging 17.0 points and 5.3 assists thus far.

The season might seem even longer if the Bobcats don’t improve their play on the road. Charlotte went 13-28 away from home in 2009-10. That included a 97-91 loss at New Jersey for the Nets’ first win of the season Dec. 4. The Bobcats have failed to score more than 88 points in two road contests this season. Charlotte did win its last trip to New Jersey, 105-95 on April 12. Jackson had 17 points and nine rebounds, and has averaged 22.3 points in his last four games at New Jersey. Harris had 22 points for the Nets in that matchup.

GC NBA play for Wednesday

.

On Wednesday the NBA Bonus Play is on the Boston Celtics. Game 510 at 8:05 eastern. The Celtics just missed making the late phone cut here. They do qualify in a nice system here that has cashed 8 of the last 9 times. What we want to do is play on certain home favorites with no rest that scored 100 or more on the road last night vs an opponent that scored 90 or less as a home favorite in their last game. Milwaukee is off a bad loss last night by double digits at home vs Portland. The Celtics smashed Detroit by 23 points. This is a nice Bonus Play tonight. However the line was just a tad to high for unit rated status. If the line were to get down to 6 I would rate Boston as a 3 unit play. For the Bonus Play take the Boston Celtics. GC
