Cardinals at Dodgers
Pick: Dodgers +130

Well aware of the Carpenter career mastery of the Dodgers - 5-0 lifetime - but cannot ignore that LA comes into this game 7-2 in it last nine games at Chavez Ravine while the Cardinals are just 2-8 in their last ten games. LA has been playing games that mattered for two weeks now while the Cards have basically been in shutdown mode, and it will be tough to just flip the switch. I like the Dodgers in this game and in the series as well.

4* Major Game 1 NLDS *Crunch Time Bailout* (TBS) on Cardinals -136
The Cards went 5-2 against the Dodgers this season, including 2-1 in LA, and they are 10-4 in their last 14 meetings in LA. I'll take them tonight behind one of the best pitchers in baseball. Chris Carpenter is 17-4 on the season with a 2.24 ERA, including 9-2 on the road with a 2.05 ERA, and 1-0 over his last 3 starts with a ridiculous 0.45 ERA. Plus, Carpenter is a perfect 5-0 in his career against the Dodgers (6-0 against the money line) with an ERA of 2.20. Plus, the Cardinals are averaging more runs on the road (4.8) than the Dodgers are at home (4.5). The Cardinals are also 22-5 in their last 27 series openers. Take the Cards.

OC Dooley:

"1 UNIT" PLAYOFF TOTAL (Twins at Yankees OVER 9' in a 6:05 eastern start on TBS-TV-------Duensing versus Sabathia): Of course the Yankees in the offseason spent more money than any other club in an attempt to bolster an ailing pitching staff. Due to C.C. Sabathia and A.J. Burnett staying healthy, the Yankees have made their grand return to the playoffs after taking one year off. In the second half of 2008 Sabathia was baseball's most dominant pitcher, but there are still question marks regarding postseason statistics where his ERA (7.92) is extremely high. Odds are that Minnesota will be tapping an "exhausted" bullpen early since young Brian Duensing has no postseason experience. The Twins have gone on an exceptional 17-4 tear just ot reach the postseason and the offense during the weekend scored "double digits" twice. The Twins have received contributions throughout their lineup led by Joe Mauer (.365) who leads the majors in batting average. The Yankees offense is led by Mark Teixeira who drove in an American League high 122 runs and tied for the homerun crown. It seems a bit scary by Alex Rodriguez has been pushed to the background with the offensive exploits of both Teixeira and Derek Jeter. But on the final day of the regular season A-Rod once again reached the 30 HR/100 RBI plateau and today will be out to improve a postseason batting average (.159) which has been horrible. Once again the spotlight is NOT directly on Rodriguez which should improve his offensive production. Minnesota just happens to be 9-1 OVER in the last ten games against lethal offensive opponents who average at least 5.2 runs per game. C.C. Sabathia is 9-2 OVER long term against teams who average at least 2.75 "extra base hits" per contest

Complimentary Picks and Analysis
Game: St Louis at Los Angeles Dodgers (9:35 PM Eastern)Pick: St Louis -130 (moneyline)
The Cardinals open their NL Division series on the road in Los Angeles. The Dodgers were quick out of the gate this season, especially at home where they won their first 13 games, but finished the season just 37-31 at home thereafter. This exact matchup took place in St. Louis with the Cards' Chris Carpenter besting Randy Wolf 6-1. Carpenter has owned the Dodgers with a 0.96 ERA against them over the past five years. Also, St. Louis took five of seven this season from the NL West Champs. It's hard to pass on a pitcher with those credentials against the Dodgers. Add in the fact that the Cards are 92-38 in Carpenter's last 130 starts, and I'll back the Cards to win the opener.

Complimentary Picks and Analysis
Game: Phoenix at Pittsburgh (7:35 PM Eastern)
Pick: Pittsburgh -190 (moneyline)
The Pittsburgh Penguins have gotten off to a quick start in defense of their Stanley Cup winning season a year ago. They have opened 2-0, and are off a thrilling shootout victory on the road over the Islanders. The Phoenix Coyotes opened with a road win in LA, and must head east to take on the always tough Penguins. The Coyotes finished last season at just 12-22 in their final 34 and are not even close to the Penguins right now, who are suffering no hangover from winning the Cup last year. This is a Penguins team that has gone 52-20 in their last 72 home games, and 36-15 in their last 51 overall. The home team has won nine of the last 13 in this series, and I like Pittsburgh to win this one at home.
