4 UNIT* MILWAUKEE -1.5 +140 over SAN DIEGO
The San Diego Padres walked off the field for the 35th time last night, without a single player from the Monday lineup batting better than Chase Headley’s .245. This late into the season it is not just a slump, but rather an indictment of who you are, and a team that is last in the Major’s in Runs Per Game and Hits Per Game faces an uphill battle to get much at all on the scoreboard tonight. Having been held to two runs or less in 16 of 35 games, it is a mad matchup against Shaun Marcum.
The Padres have tried to use patience as their way to overcome a lack of lumber, drawing 132 W’s, but Marcum pounds the strike zone, with a sparkling 1.62 W’s per 9 over his last six starts, a span in which he has worked to a 3-0/1.15 tune. The projected San Diego lineup lacks any appreciable experience against him, so look for a lot of soft contact outs as he consistently works the corners of the strike zone.
Meanwhile Clayton Richard brings the kind of stuff you can get by with in Petco Park, which masks his mediocrity on the road. Over the past two seasons it has been a 4.62 allowance in road games, and that makes this a prime setting for what has been an under-achieving Milwaukee offense to break out – five different Brewers had an extra-base hit in winning the series opener on Monday, and they will make the kind of quality contact to break this one open. With the Run Line offering a nice rate of return, that is the best way to take advantage of this setting.
