4* COLORADO -1.5 +115 over CHICAGO CUBS
Mike Quade does not really want to have to use James Russell in his starting rotation right now, but can not find a better solution yet. So for the third time the lefty from the bullpen opens a game, after being scorched to a 12.71 tune in his first two starts, when he allowed 14 hits over 5.2 IP, three of them HR’s, with only one K. And this time it is a nightmare for both Quade and Russell, an evening with the wind blowing out in Wrigley Field.
Consider what this means. In his last start Russell was given a fabulous roll of the dice, a start from this mound in the second game of a double-header vs. the light lumber of the San Diego Padres, with a first pitch temperature of 42 degrees and the wind blowing in. He lasted just four IP, and allowed four runs, including three HR’s, all without a K. Consider that in their last 21 games, only twice have the Padres scored more than four runs in regulation, and that outside of that encounter with Russell they only have 11 HR’s all season. And note that all other pitches that appeared that night allowed just eight runs over 35 IP, a 2.06 allowance, which shows what the conditions are like. He does not have the stuff to stand up in this setting, and his confidence will be at a low ebb, which means plenty of good swings for the Rockies throughout, as they get into the Chicago bullpen early.
Meanwhile Jorge de la Rosa can be used confidently here off of his 3-0/3.00 opening, especially as his command and ground-ball counts continue to improve. He is off of a crisp win over the Giants in which he worked to a 14.0 PPI, and K’s and ground-balls are the ticket to dealing with Wrigley on a night like this.
