528 DePaul 17.0 (-110) BetUS vs 527 W.Virginia
Analysis: To be perfectly frank here, +17 is far too many points here for West Virginia to be laying on the road. I understand the basic premise of why this line is so high. We have a DePaul team that is downright awful facing a top 10 team in the country. The thing is though, is Depaul really that awful?? The answer i have is ABSOLUTELY NO! With that NO answer comes serious VALUE, and we will take advantage of exactly this as we cash this side tonight.
DePaul has played a very tough schedule this season, a schedule so hard that i have it ranked in my top 35 toughest schedules in the country. 2 things come out of a schedule like this: A bad overall record is the negative that comes out of a schedule such as what Depaul has faced this year. However, we must realize that with the tough schedule they have played, that it's highly likely that DePaul won't be intimadated by West Virginia tonight. In my opinion, BELIEVING that you can compete with top flight competition is half the battle when playiing as a rather large double digit underdog. Let's look at who Depaul has faced this year and how they fared:
Depaul started their season hot, as this team beat Northern Iowa 60-52. This is a significant win, because Northern Iowa stands at 17-2 on the season. At the time, that win didn't look as good as it does now. They lost by 4 to Tennessee, who is now ranked in the top 10 in the nation. Depaul then lost to both Vanderbilt and Pittsburgh by 13 points in each game away from home. They also have 17 point home losses to both Georgetown and Providence. That Providence game was one of their worst performances of the season. So while Depaul started the season off strong, they absoutely fell short in the middle part of their schedule. What about their current form? You could argue that Depaul is back to their early season form, considering they beat Marquette OUTRIGHT, and followed that up with a 10 point loss at Notre Dame. I really liked what i saw from this Depaul team after their season defining conference win against Marquette. They handled their emotions, and went on the road to Notre Dame, and were within 6 points with 1 minute to go. To me, this showed both tremendous fight and heart.
I expect Depaul to play really hard tonight against West Virginia. We have proven that based of their strenth of schedule, that they won't be intimidated to play West Virginia today. We have talked about how Depaul is in good form heading into this game tonight. Clearly this DePaul team has the talent to hang tough with any team in the country. I think if they put it all together tonight, that they can put a real good scare in West Virginia tonight. West Virginia isn't in their finest form, and they certainly aren't in the greatest situational spot tonight. They earned a hard fought win against Ohio St. in their last game, and they have a lookahead game to Louisville in their next game. Clearly this team could struggle to get "up" for Depaul tonight away from home. One thing i've really noticed about this Mountaineers team is that they struggle to stay motivated. This team is very hit and miss, and proof of that is in their 1st half play. Time and time again, West Virginia has put themselves in tough spots based on their 1st half play. 6 times this season West Virginia has gone to halftime trailing. Digging deeper, 5 times in the past 7 games, West Virginia has gone into halftime behind by double digits. This problem has actually turned into a problem. Clearly this West Virginia team lacks FOCUS, and they are in a situational spot tonight that screams TROUBLE.
No doubt West Virginia has the tools to win this game by 20 points or more. But backing teams on the road in conference play at -17 is a very dangerous proposition. I love backing home underdogs that i feel have something to prove and that are likely to play with a chip on their shoulder. I feel that is exactly the case tonight. Depaul does have talent, led by Will Walker. Walker has scored 52 points in his past two games combined, against top level competition. This guy is a true competitor, as he's played all but 8 minutes over his past 6 games. Let's not forget that last year he played well against West Virginia as well. Bottom line, i think Depaul can easily keep this a single digit game tonight. With West Virginia struggling in 1st halfs and Depaul playing well currently, i expect this game to be close at the half. The longer this game stays close, the louder this arena will get and the more confidence Depaul will gain. I love this spot for Depaul, and i'm backing them for 1 UNIT tonight as a Bonus Play. Let's cash this double digit home underdog tonight!
